movement leader Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.

The former prime minister said the turbans "have no choice but to withdraw from the town," which has been witnessing severe gunbattles between the Lebanese army and Syria-based terrorists.

Arsal is home to 40,000 residents and 120,000 Syrian refugees.

The attack began Saturday as the rebels made a cross-border raid into Arsal, some 90 kilometers from Beirut, after the army detained Syrian Imad Ahmed Jomaa, who identified himself as a member of the terrorist al-Nusra Front.

"Al-Mustaqbal movement considers the Lebanese army and the rest of the security forces a red line," Hariri told the newspaper. "The attack on them is prohibited."

Hariri said he stood by the army and security forces "to regain control of the town of Arsal which has remained steadfast … because its residents have no option but the state."

Hariri is expected to issue a detailed statement on the Arsal fighting soon, al-Mustaqbal sources said.

Hariri Slams Al-Nusra Front Threats, Calls on Lebanese Not to Take Part in Regional War
2014-01-27
[An Nahar] Former Prime Minister and head of al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
movement Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
warned on Saturday the Lebanese in general and the Sunni sect in particular from supporting fishy calls that urge them to involve the country in rejected and condemned wars.

"The Lebanese and the Sunni sect reject to be part of any war in Leb or the region between Hizbullah and al-Qaeda," Hariri said in a statement issued by his press office.

He stressed that "they also reject threats to target civilians in any region in Leb amid a demented war (in the region) and its dangerous repercussions on the the national and Islamic unity."

Hariri's statement comes a day after a group suspected of links to al-Qaeda warned that all areas of Leb where Hizbullah operates are "legitimate targets" for attack, telling Sunnis to avoid them.

"We, al-Nusra Front in Leb, announce that Iran's party (Hizbullah) and all its bases and... bastions are legitimate targets for us, wherever they are," the group said in a statement posted on the Internet.

Al-Mustaqbal chief said that "suspicious calls issued by bad boy groups that are proven to be directly linked to the murderous regime in Damascus only aim at making the conflict in the neighboring country slip over into Leb."

He accused the bad boy groups of "serving the regime similarly to Hizbullah that is defending it in Syria."

The official noted that "every reasonable and patriot from any sect would reject falling into these calls as much as Hizbullah's involvement in Syria is rejected."

A-Nusra Front's statement comes three days after the group -- which is believed to be a franchise of the Syrian al-Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda linked rebel movement -- grabbed credit for a car kaboom in Beirut's southern suburbs neighborhood of Haret Hreik that killed four people.

Tuesday's was the sixth in a string if attacks targeting Lebanese areas dominated by Hizbullah since it acknowledged sending fighters into neighboring Syria to support Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

Al-Nusra Front in Leb warned Sunnis against "approaching or residing in or near (Hizbullah's) bases, and (to) avoid gathering around its meeting points."

The group had earlier claimed a deadly car kaboom in the heart of Hermel town in eastern Leb, which killed three people.

Al-Mustaqbal Says Hizbullah, Extremist Groups 'Two Sides of Same Coin'
2013-12-25
[An Nahar] Al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
parliamentary bloc on Tuesday launched another verbal attack on Hizbullah's "militia," stating that the party and bad turban groups are "two sides of the same coin."

"The weapons of the resistance were formerly aimed at Israel but have now become positioned and used inside the country," the MPs said in a released statement after their weekly meeting at the Center House.

Hizbullah's arms have thus become those of a militia, they added.

Al-Mustaqbal bloc elaborated: "Hizbullah's arms aim at changing the political system in Leb but they no longer enjoy Lebanese consensus. The party's call for agreeing on a new political formula in the country is no longer viable after it took the unilateral decision to launch a war against the Syrian people in 2012."

"By taking this decision, Hizbullah has abandoned all national pacts and accords, including the Baabda Declaration."

Again, al-Mustaqbal MPs called on Hizbullah to withdraw its forces from the neighboring country.

"The life in Leb will not go back to normal unless Hizbullah goes back to playing its national role only," they said.

"Hizbullah's fighting in Syria, which was a regional decision, has dragged the Lebanese into a confrontation with Syrians," they added.

"The party is trying to give the international community the impression that it is fighting terrorism but this attempt has been exposed. Hizbullah and bad turban groups are two sides of the same coin."

Separately, the bloc demanded President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
and Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam to form a new cabinet of non-partisans.

They also urged them "not to surrender to Hizbullah's blackmailing."

Commenting on the deadly festivities between the residents on the Souwairi town in West Bekaa, they stated that it is "unacceptable and a shame that that social relations transform into armed disputes."

The MPs urged security forces to enter the town and restore coexistence.

Clashes between the Shouman and Jinbeen families in the town left four people dead on Sunday.

Al-Mustaqbal Says Nasrallah's 'Arrogant' Statement Part of Psychological War
2013-10-30
[An Nahar] Al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
bloc stated on Tuesday that Hizbullah chief's latest televised speech is a part of a "psychological war," stressing also on their rejection of all armed presence in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...

"His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
's speech is arrogant and is a part of a psychological war he is wahing," the bloc said in a released statement after the MPs' weekly meeting at the Center House.

The statement elaborated: "Through his speech, Nasrallah tried to delude the Lebanese that the Damascus regime will soon emerge victorious against the Syrian people, and that the Persian power will dominate over Leb and the region. Nasrallah wanted to say that this fate is inevitable and that the Lebanese, Syrians and Arabs have to cope with it."

"But this will not be achieved."

Al-Mustaqbal accused Hizbullah of "contributing to the paralysis in constitutional institutions and obstructing the formation of the new cabinet."

"Nasrallah is proposing conditions for the cabinet's formation that are unconstitutional," it said.

"But the Lebanese people that resisted to terrorism and refused to surrender will not give up and give in to the new arrogant scheme applied by Hizbullah and its allies."

In a televised speech he gave on Monday, Nasrallah commented on the political deadlock in Leb and failure to form a new government, accusing the March 14 camp of only prolonging the impasse by imposing various conditions on forming a cabinet.

He noted that the camp was and is still banking on the developments in Syria in order to take any political decision in this matter, saying that such actions will only maintain the deadlock.

The Hizbullah chief therefore suggested that the March 14 camp "exercise some humility" and accept the formation of a cabinet that grants nine ministers to itself and the March 8 forces
... the opposition to the Mar. 14th movement, consisting of Hizbullah and its allies, so-called in commemoration of their Mar. 8th, 2006 demonstration of strength in Beirut ...
, while the remaining six be granted to centrists.

The al-Mustaqbal urged Hizbullah again to withdraw its forces from Syria and commit to the Baabda Declaration.

"True partnership will not be secured in the country unless Hizbullah commits to the accords reached at national dialogue sessions and abides by the Baabda Declaration."

bloc MP Mohammed Kabbara in the city to discuss the developments "at the political, judicial, security and popular levels," after at least one resident of the mainly Alawite Jabal Mohsen neighborhood was tossed in the calaboose

on charges of involvement in deadly bombings that targeted two Sunni mosques in the city.

The conferees discussed "the security achievement made by the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau, which has arrested a suspect from 'the Assad barracks' in Jabal Mohsen and busted the terrorist cell that staged the terrorist bombings in Tripoli," according to a statement issued after the meeting.

They called on President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
to "summon the ambassador of the Assad regime and hand him a sharp-toned protest letter, ahead of expelling him when the judiciary convicts the culprits who are linked to the Syrian regime."

In the statement, which was recited by Kabbara, the conferees also urged caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati and "Tripoli's ministers" to refer the case to the Judicial Council and launch an immediate probe into "the setting up of artillery in Jabal Mohsen with the aim of targeting Tripoli."

They called for "eradicating this armed gang and pursuing its officials, especially after elements belonging to it played a role in the Tripoli bombings," urging the "disbanding of the Arab Democratic Party, which is distorting the image of our peaceful people in Jabal Mohsen."

The conferees stressed that they "will not stand idly by regarding any pressures that might be exerted on the judiciary," calling on the judicial authorities to "unveil all the perpetrators, conspirators, instigators and culprits and bring them to justice, in order to preserve the rights of the victims and the security and stability of Tripoli."

The also urged Tripoli's residents to "hold onto their civilized stance by rejecting and confronting sedition and leaving things to the security forces."

Al-Mustaqbal newspaper reported Sunday that several members of the Arab Democratic Party -- the main political and armed force in Jabal Mohsen -- were behind the August bombings in Tripoli that left at least 45 people dead and more than 500 injured.

Informed sources told al-Mustaqbal newspaper that seven members of the Arab Democratic Party carried out the attack that targeted al-Salam and Taqwa Mosques on August 23.

Youssef Diab was behind the bombing at al-Salam Mosque, while Ahmed Merhi was behind the attack at the other one, they said.

On Friday, armed festivities broke out in Tripoli's areas of Bab al-Tabbaneh, Jabal Mohsen and Syria Street over Diab's arrest, wounding an army soldier and a young man identified as S.M.

On Saturday, State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr ordered the arrest of several suspects over their alleged involvement in the bombings.

Saqr charged on August 30 three suspects in the twin bombings of Tripoli in addition to a Syrian army Captain and another Syrian man over the booby-trapped cars.

Syria transported chemical weapons to Iraq
2013-09-15
Definitely needs confirmation, but how ironic. Just returning the favor...
Syria has moved 20 trucks worth of equipment and material used for the manufacturing of chemical weapons into neighboring Iraq, the Lebanese daily Al-Mustaqbal reported on Sunday. The government in Baghdad has denied allegations that it is helping the Syrian government conceal chemical stockpiles.
"Lies! All lies!"
The report came just a day after the United States and Russia struck a deal stipulating that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime would destroy its chemical arsenal to avert an American military assault.

The newspaper reported that the trucks crossed the boundary separating Syria with Iraq over the course of Thursday and Friday. Border guards did not inspect the contents of the trucks, which raises suspicions that they contained illicit cargo, according to Al-Mustaqbal.

Al-Mustaqbal, a publication that has long been affiliated with anti-Syrian political elements in Lebanon, quoted a spokesperson for Iraq's interior ministry, Saad Maan, as saying that security forces were deployed along the border and were checking all vehicles coming into the country.

"Iraq today is not Saddam Hussein's Iraq," he said. "It is not an Iraq which resorts to the use of chemical weapons against its own people or against its neighbors."

"These accusations are all rumors and are useless and no one believes them," he said.

Last week, the head of the Free Syrian Army told CNN that opposition intelligence indicated Assad was moving chemical arms out of the country.

"Today, we have information that the regime began to move chemical materials and chemical weapons to Lebanon and to Iraq," General Salim Idriss told CNN.

"We have told our friends that the regime has begun moving a part of its chemical weapons arsenal to Lebanon and Iraq. We told them do not be fooled," Idris told reporters in Istanbul. "All of this initiative does not interest us. Russia is a partner with the regime in killing the Syrian people. A crime against humanity has been committed and there is not any mention of accountability."

Al-Mustaqbal Bloc Condemns Attacks on Civilians, Diplomats, Calls Assad 'Takfiri'
2013-09-04
[An Nahar] Al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
bloc on Tuesday condemned Hizbullah's "attacks against citizens and diplomats under the excuse of security measures," urging the president and the premier-designate to overcome "illegal obstacles" and form a new cabinet.

"We strongly condemn the attacks of Hizbullah's militia on citizens and diplomats," the bloc said in a released statement after the MPs' weekly meeting at the Center House.

The statement elaborated: "In addition to its fighting in Syria alongside the regimes' forces and subjecting Leb to all kinds of dangers, Hizbullah keeps dragging the country into festivities and puts it in a confrontation with neighboring Arab nations."

Kuwait's ambassador to Leb revealed on Friday that a Kuwaiti diplomat was searched at an "unofficial checkpoint," also calling on his country's nationals to leave Leb.

Also, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. had filed a complaint to the Foreign Ministry after one of its embassy vehicles in Leb was searched by Hizbullah members at a checkpoint near its stronghold of Dahieh in Beirut's southern suburbs last week.

Diplomats in the car were also searched before being allowed to return on their way.

These incidents come after Hizbullah had stepped up its security measures in and around Dahieh after a bombing in the area on August 15.

Al-Mustaqbal said that last month's twin blasts in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
"were orchestrated by Syrian intelligence bodies."

"This contradicts with all claims that say Leb and its security have become under the mercy of the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
s,"

"(Syrian President Bashar) Assad's regime is the top Takfiri and terrorist that is targeting both Leb and Syria," the statement stressed.

"Tripoli's crime is a continuation of the Samaha-Mamlouk scheme."

The statement was pointing out to the case of former Information Minister Michel Samaha and Syrian security chief Maj. Gen. Ali Mamlouk.

Lebanese judicial authorities have charged Samaha and Mamlouk with forming a group to commit terrorist crimes in Leb.

The two were also charged with plotting to assassinate political and religious figures.

The al-Mustaqbal statement added: "We praise the efforts exerted by security bodies, especially by the International Security Forces Intelligence Bureau, to uncover the group that executed the bombings in Tripoli and the one behind the kidnapping of the Turkish pilots."

Mustaqbal Rejects Army's 'Threats and Preaching'
2013-07-03
[An Nahar] Al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
parliamentary bloc stated on Tuesday that Hizbullah is the "only party to be held responsible for what Leb is going through" because of its involvement in the Syrian conflict.

"Hizbullah, its weapons and its militia's involvement in the Syrian war are responsible for what Leb is going through," the politicians said in a released statement after their weekly meeting at the Center House.

They questioned Hizbullah's role in last month's festivities of the southern city of Sidon, accusing the party of encouraging strife in the country.

"Has Hizbullah's role transformed into moving its Shabiha between (the Syrian border town of) al-Qusayr, Beirut and Sidon?," the MPs asked.

"We demand answers regarding the party's involvement in Sidon through a transparent probe."

Restating its support for the army in its mission of preserving security, the bloc, however, criticized the military institution's statements of "threats and preaching."

"What were the measures and punishments adopted against those who assaulted (Salafist holy man Ahmed al-Asir's supporter) Nader al-Bayoumy? What is the truth behind the behavior of the head of the army intelligence's office and the military police officials in the South before and after the festivities?"

On Thursday, the army handed over to the military police soldiers suspected of humiliating and beating a man suspected of ties to Asir.

The body was identified as Nader al-Bayoumy, whom the Association of Mohammedan Scholars said had "handed himself in" after the Abra clash.

The statement stressed: "The bloc and the Lebanese people demand honest and quick answers to these questions as well as holding parties accountable."

"We reject the army's unacceptable statements of threats and preaching."

Al-Mustaqbal also criticized the military institution for "preventing journalists from doing their job" in Sidon.

The politicians assured that they abide by the articles of the memo submitted by Sidon MPs Bahia Hariri and Fouad Saniora to President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. "We are still waiting for a security plan to transform Sidon into a city free of arms and party slogans," they noted.

Hizbullah's Qaouq Assures Entering Galilee 'Still Possible'
2013-06-10
[An Nahar] Hizbullah announced on Sunday that entering the occupied Galilee region in northern Israel is still possible, despite the current Syrian crisis and the party's involvement in it.

"Despite the Syrian crisis and despite political and media pressures, the resistance today is at the highest levels of readiness," declared top Hizbullah official Sheikh Nabil Qaouq during an event commemorating the one-week passing of Hizbullah fighter in Syria Hasan Ali Zahreddine in the southern town of Mais al-Jabal.

He added: "Tens of thousands of Hizbullah fighters in the South are ready at any time to respond to an Israeli attack and emerge victorious from it, creating the Galilee equation that (Hizbullah chief) Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah had promised."

Nasrallah had said in July 2012 that "all options are on the table" regarding a confrontation with Israel, adding that the resistance might one day enter the Galilee region.

Qaouq accused the March 14 alliance, particularly al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
Movement, of "inciting sectarian tensions to besiege the resistance," promising not to allow "American dictations to form the cabinet in Leb."

"Al-Mustaqbal's slogan today is Free Syrian Army first," he said.

"As long as March 14 is betting on the fall of the Syrian regime, the crisis in Leb will continue to exist and as long as it wants to stab the resistance in the back, there won't be stability in the country and the cabinet, if formed, cannot be productive."

The Hizbullah official stressed: "They should stop their losing and conspiratorial bets."

"American dictations are controlling their tools in Leb to put conditions on Hizbullah," Qaouq considered.

"But we will not allow the U.S. to have the upper hand in the cabinet's formation."

Hariri Says Nasrallah Wants Recognition of 'Hizbullah's State': He Announced Resistance's Suicide in al-Qusayr
2013-05-26
Al-Mustaqbal Party leader Saad Hariri stated on Saturday that Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah is demanding the recognition of the "State of Hizbullah," considering that the resistance has announced its "suicide" in the Syrian border town of al-Qusayr.

"You have announced yourself the end of the resistance on Liberation's Day," Hariri addressed Nasrallah in a released statement in which he responded to Hizbullah leader's speech in the commemoration of the liberation of the South earlier on Saturday.

"You have announced the resistance's political and military suicide in al-Qusayr."

Hariri accused Nasrallah of releasing a Fatwa that calls on the Lebanese to get involved in a war on Syrian territories.

"Your speech has no value to us, to most Lebanese and definitely to the Syrian people in all political, national, ethical, legal, religious and human measures."

Nasrallah had said earlier on Saturday that the Lebanese rooting for the victory of President Bashar Assad's regime or the opposition's rebels should fight in Syria instead of clashing in the northern city of Tripoli.

"The age of referring to the Palestinian cause, the resistance and national unity for personal interests is over, and the Lebanese as well as Arabs and Islamic nations have come to recognize the truth. Time will reveal more lies," Hariri told Nasrallah.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced on Thursday that 104 Hizbullah members had been killed in Syria since last autumn.

Nasrallah has said before that his party's involvement in Syria's war aimed at defending 13 Syrian villages along the border where Lebanese Shiites live, and the Sayyeda Zeinab shrine, revered by Shiites around the world.

But on Saturday, however, the Hizbullah chief pointed out that Syria is "the backbone of the resistance, assuring that he will not let this bone break."

Hariri criticized Nasrallah for "undermining the Lebanese state, the army and the civil society's potentials to face anything."

"The state in Nasallah's eyes, is powerless and helpless in politics, security and economic matters and his solution is for Hizbullah to take the state's place and keep its arms for ever," Hariri stressed.

"Nasrallah is telling all the members of the National Dialogue, on top of them President Michel Suleiman, that any talks about a defense strategy is worthless as there is only one party in Lebanon in charge of safeguarding the border and of using weapons whenever and wherever it desires."

"He is asking the president and all Lebanese factions to recognize the state of Hizbullah," Hariri announced. "Other parties must abide by this in order to avoid internal clashes."

The former premier considered that Liberation's Day is the fruit of the Lebanese people's will "to liberate their land and defend it with all means."

"This truth has been confiscated more than once since the year 2000, and Hizbullah and its followers wanted to consider this achievement an exclusive right for a party."
