Israeli strike targets Dahieh for first time since war
2025-03-29
[AnNahar] An Israeli Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
on Friday targeted the Beirut southern suburb of al-Jamous, destroying two buildings, following an Israeli evacuation warning, the first such raid since a November ceasefire largely halted hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

TV footage showed heavy black smoke billowing from the area, which is densely populated and home to residential buildings and schools.

The Israeli warning for evacuating a building sparked panic in the area, with parents rushing to pick up their children from schools that quickly shut.

Heavy traffic clogged roads around the southern suburbs as many residents of the area, which Israel heavily bombed during two months of war with Hezbollah from September last year, tried to flee.

Education Minister Rima Karami had ordered all schools and universities in Hadath to close for the day. In some parts of the southern suburbs, shooting could be heard warning people to leave their homes and many residents were seen fleeing the area in cars and on foot.

Israel’s military had warned people in a post on X in Arabic to evacuate buildings in the area.

"You are located near facilities affiliated with Hezbollah," it said alongside a map with a building marked in red.

After the strike, Israel’s army said it attacked a Hezbollah drone storage facility, accusing Hezbollah of using civilians as human shields and saying it issued advanced warning for people to leave.

It added that the rockets fired at Israel from Leb
...home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade....
earlier in the morning were a "blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon." It also pledged to continue operations "in order to remove any threat to the civilians of the State of Israel."

Chaos engulfed the southern suburbs of Beirut as Lebanese tried to flee the area, and a large smoke cloud rose over the city following the strike.

The area struck is a residential and commercial area and is in close proximity to at least two schools, which sustained material damage.

Hezbollah denied firing the rockets at northern Israel, and accused Israel of seeking a pretext to continue attacking Lebanon.

Israel's army said it earlier struck "Hezbollah targets" in southern Lebanon after the rocket fire. Israel's Defense Minister said Friday that if there was no peace in Israel's northern communities there would be no peace in Beirut either.

Israeli strikes in other parts of Lebanon on Friday killed three people and maimed 18, including children and women, in the southern village of Kfar Tibnit, said Lebanon's health ministry.

Speaking from Gay Paree, President Joseph Aoun said the strike on a Beirut suburb was a continuation "of Israel’s violations of the agreement" that was sponsored by La Belle France and the U.S.
The Times of Israel adds:
Two rockets were fired at northern Israel from Lebanon on Friday morning, leading the military to carry out strikes first in southern Lebanon and later in the capital, Beirut, a first since the November ceasefire went into effect.

According to the military, one of the rockets was intercepted and the other fell short inside Lebanese territory, as rocket sirens sounded in the city of Kiryat Shmona and the nearby communities of Tel Hai, Margaliot, and Misgav Am.

It was the second attack within the past week, after three rockets were fired at Metula on March 22, the first such incident since the November 27 ceasefire ended over a year of fighting with the Hezbollah terror group.

Following the attack, the IDF said Friday morning it was carrying out a wave of strikes on Hezbollah targets in the south of the country, and later that afternoon brought down a building it claimed was used by the terror group’s drone unit in southern Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold known as Dahiyeh.

According to the IDF, the building struck in Beriut was used by Hezbollah as a drone storage facility. It belonged to Hezbollah’s aerial forces, known as Unit 127, the military said. The unit is responsible for explosive-laden drone attacks on Israel and flying surveillance drones to collect intelligence.

“Hezbollah has placed its terror infrastructure in the heart of the civilian population. This is another example of the Hezbollah terror organization’s cynical use of Lebanese citizens as human shields,” an IDF statement said.

The IDF issued an evacuation warning for the building and the surrounding area before the strike and also reportedly carried out several warning shots in the area before dropping larger munitions that brought down the building.

It marked the first time that the IDF issued warnings ahead of strikes in Beirut since November 27, when it last struck Hezbollah sites in the Lebanese capital, hours before a ceasefire took effect.

According to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar news outlet, targeted areas in southern Lebanon included the outskirts of Qaaqaait al-Jisr and the town of Khiam in the Nabatieh area.

Earlier this week, a Lebanese official said Lebanese leaders have been in intensive contact with Washington and Paris to prevent Israel from bombing Beirut after the rocket fire on March 22.

Israel has continued to carry out strikes on Hezbollah operatives and members of affiliated terror groups since a ceasefire in November, following two months of open war aimed at ending rocket attacks from the Iran-backed group that plagued the north for nearly a year.

🚨 Trump admin backs Israeli strike on Beirut:

U.S. envoy to Lebanon, Ortagus, tells Al Arabiya:
"This morning the ceasefire agreement was violated by Lebanon... we don't care if it's Hezbollah or Hamas... what's interesting is that the missiles were launched from Lebanon, which is a violation of the agreement. Israel has the right to respond to this violation."

Update from the Times of Israel at 7:30 p.m. ET:
The Lebanese army says it found a rocket launcher used in this morning’s attack on Kiryat Shmona, during which two projectiles were fired.

In a statement, the Lebanese Armed Forces says its troops found the rocket launcher in the Qaaqaait al-Jisr area, near Nabatieh, and has begun an investigation into which group was behind the fire

Lebanon detains 25 people for questioning over attack on UN peacekeepers convoy in Beirut

Lebanon claims over 25 arrested for attack on UNIFIL convoy that wounded peacekeepers

[IsraelTimes] Lebanese president vows perpetrators ‘will receive their punishment’ as Hezbollah and its allies seek to distance themselves from assault by Iran-backed terror group’s supporters

Lebanese authorities said Saturday that more than 25 people had been arrested following an attack by Hezbollah supporters on a United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
convoy the day before that maimed two peacekeepers, including the force’s outgoing deputy commander.

UN and Lebanese officials have condemned Friday’s attack, which came as Hezbollah supporters blocked the road to the country’s only international airport for a second night over a decision barring two Iranian planes from landing there.

"More than 25 people have been arrested by Lebanese army intelligence," with another person detained by the security services, Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar told news hounds after an emergency security meeting Saturday.

"This does not mean these detainees carried out the attack... but the investigations will show who is responsible," he continued.

The army and security agencies would bolster measures to "maintain security and stability," Hajjar said, adding that violations would be treated "with all seriousness."

The UN Interim Force in Leb
...The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else?...
(UNIFIL) has demanded an investigation after one of its vehicles was set on fire during the incident, which maimed outgoing deputy force commander Chok Bahadur Dhakal, a Nepalese national who was heading home after ending his mission.

UNIFIL deputy spokesperson Kandice Ardiel told AFP that a second Nepalese peacekeeper was also maimed and hospitalized.

On Saturday, Hezbollah supporters again demonstrated around Beirut airport, with the Lebanese army firing tear gas to disperse them. A politician from the terror group Hassan Fadlallah called on the army to hold those who fired at the protesters to account.

The Lebanese army and government "should have held immediate meetings to prevent the Israeli enemy from imposing its dictates on the airport and from continuing its occupation of Lebanese territory ... instead of using force against a peaceful sit-in on the airport road," Fadlallah added in a statement.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun vowed that "the attackers will receive their punishment," adding that "security forces will not be lenient with any party that tries to upset stability and civil peace," according to a statement from the presidency on X.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam strongly condemned the "criminal attack" and promised to arrest the perpetrators during a conversation with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and UNIFIL Commander General Aroldo Lazaro.

’CIVIL PEACE’
In a meeting with Hajjar on Saturday, Salam emphasized the importance of maintaining security across the country, a statement from his office said. The premier was set to meet other "relevant ministers" later in the day.

The presidency’s statement said Aoun had stressed that the incident "cannot be allowed to be repeated," adding that the judiciary "has begun investigations on the ground."

The army said Friday that several areas around the airport had seen "demonstrations marked by acts of vandalism and festivities, including assaults on members of the armed forces and attacks against vehicles."

Videos circulating on social media showed demonstrators, some hooded and carrying Hezbollah flags, attacking a man in military garb and another in civilian clothes near the torched UNIFIL vehicle.

There was no immediate official comment from Hezbollah, which, together with its allies, appeared to be scrambling to distance themselves from Friday’s attack.

Hezbollah’s Al Manar TV said in a statement posted on its social media accounts that "unruly elements caused chaos with suspicious objectives on the Beirut airport road."

The Lebanese terror group’s ally, the Amal Movement, which is led by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri

’ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE’
Several countries have condemned the incident, as did UN Secretary-General António Guterres

He was the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and was the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002. He served as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. In both a 2012 and 2014 poll, the Portuguese public ranked him as the best Prime Minister of the previous 30 years...
"Such attacks are absolutely unacceptable... The safety and security of UN personnel and property must be respected at all times," said Stephane Dujarric, Guterres’s front man.

"Attacks against peacekeepers are in breach of international law... and may constitute war crimes," the statement said, adding that "UNIFIL must be allowed unrestricted freedom of movement throughout Lebanon."

The French foreign ministry released a statement that "calls on the Lebanese security forces to guarantee the security of blue-helmet peacekeeping forces, and calls on Lebanon’s judicial authorities to shed all light on this unacceptable attack and to go after those responsible."

Israel has repeatedly accused Hezbollah of using the Beirut airport to transfer weapons from Iran, claims Hezbollah and Lebanese officials have denied.

Lebanon’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said Thursday it had "temporarily rescheduled" some flights, including from Iran, until February 18 as it was implementing "additional security measures."

The date coincides with the deadline for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from south Lebanon and for Hezbollah to vacate positions there, under a ceasefire deal that began on November 27.

Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel since October 2023 have resulted in the deaths of 46 civilians. In addition, 80 IDF soldiers and reservists died in cross-border skirmishes, attacks on Israel, and in the ensuing ground operation launched in southern Lebanon in late September.

Two soldiers were killed in a drone attack from Iraq, and there have also been several attacks from Syria without any injuries.

The IDF estimates that some 3,500 Hezbollah operatives were killed in the conflict. Around 100 members of other terror groups, along with hundreds of civilians, were also reported killed in Lebanon.

UNIFIL’s outgoing deputy chief wounded as convoy attacked by pro-Hezbollah rioters

was smuggling cash to Hezbollah via civilian flights.

According to Saudi-owned network al-Arabiya, the three-car UNIFIL convoy was assaulted by young men who beat officers, stole equipment and burned at least one vehicle.

In a statement, UNIFIL demanded a full and immediate investigation by Lebanese authorities and for all perpetrators to be brought to justice.

during a difficult time," said the UN peacekeeping force. "Attacks on peacekeepers are flagrant violations of international law and may amount to war crime."

"Peacekeepers continue to work to restore security and stability in south Lebanon in accordance with our mandate under Security Council Resolution 1701," the statement added, referring to the UN decision ending the 2006 Second Lebanon War that requires Hezbollah to pull its fighters north of the Litani River.

The statement did not name the injured deputy commander, a post held since 2022 by Maj. Gen. Chok Bahadur Dhakal, of Nepal, who was set to leave the country after completing his mission when the convoy was attacked.

The Lebanese military vowed to take "firm action to prevent any breach of public order and arrest troublemakers" in "several areas, particularly the area around the airport."

The incident underscored tensions in Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s new government, which includes Hezbollah as a minor member.

Hezbollah and its allies appeared to be scrambling to distance themselves from Friday’s attack. Hezbollah’s Al Manar TV said in a statement posted on its social media accounts that "unruly elements caused chaos with suspicious objectives on the Beirut airport road."

"Except for Hezbollah, they're cool. Look at someone else"
The United States condemned the attack, saying it was"reportedly by a group of Hezbollah supporters."

Salam, the former top judge at the International Court of Justice, was tapped for premier by Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, whose election last month, with the backing of Washington, Riyadh and Gay Paree, ended a two-year impasse.

Aoun had previously served as head of the Lebanese Armed Forces. Upon accession to the presidency, he vowed to uphold the state’s monopoly on arms — a thinly veiled threat against Hezbollah’s extensive arsenal. The Iran-backed terror group was the only armed force not to surrender its weapons to the state after Lebanon’s 15-year civil war, which ended in 1990.

In retaliation for what it described as Israel’s illegal threat, Tehran on Friday blocked Lebanese planes from landing in Iran, stranding dozens of homebound Lebanese.

Throughout the nearly 14-month war with Hezbollah, which ended with a November 27 ceasefire, Israel has repeatedly accused the terrorist organization of using Lebanon’s only airport to smuggle arms from Iran.

in new violations of the ceasefire that followed 66-day epic fighting against the Zionist entity. Saturday's attacks saw a dronezap as well as detonation of houses in a southern border town.

Al-Manar correspondent reported that a Lebanese citizen was martyred in an Israeli dronezap that targeted his car on al-Khardali road near the river of al-Khardali.

The strike took place at the main road that links the southern cities of Nabatiyeh and Marjeyoun and is used by Lebanese civilians,'' al-Manar's Ali Shoeib reported in a video that showed behind him the targeted vehicle bursting into flames.

Meanwhile in the border town of Kfar Kila, the National News Agency (NNA) correspondent said: ''The enemy continues its shelling, booby-trapping and bombing operations, and carried out a bombing a short while ago in the town of Kfar Kila, where a violent mostly peaceful explosion was heard and columns of smoke rose densely.''

Explosions and gunfire were also heard in Mais al-Jabal border town, our correspondent reported.

On the other hand, contact was lost with the Lebanese citizen Abdo Abdel Al in the southern border town of al-Majidiya, with Lebanese media reporting he was kidnapped by Israeli occupation forces.

''This afternoon, a pickup truck carrying three people crossed the barbed wire fence towards the al-Majidiya plain and took Abdo Abdel Aal to the occupied Paleostinian territories,'' NNA reported.

Elsewhere in Beirut and its suburb, the NNA reported further breach by the Israeli enemy reconnaissance aircraft which were spotted flying over the capital and its southern suburb, Dahiyeh, over low altitude.

Hezbollah Denounces Deliberate Targeting of Lebanese Journalists in South Lebanon — Al-Manar TV Lebanon
2024-10-26
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.COM.LB] Hezbollah denounced on Friday the deliberate targeting of guesthouses used by media in the southern Lebanese town of Hasbaya, which led to martyrdom and injury of a number of journalists.

''We are fully confident that this crime won't prevent free and honorable media outlets from covering the Israeli aggression and revealing truth of the heroic epics secured by the resistance fighters,'' the statement read.

Hezbollah, meanwhile, offered condolences to al-Manar Channel and al-Mayadeen Network over martyrdom of their staff members, wishing speedy recovery for those who were maimed.

Al-Manar cameraman Wissam Qassem as well as camera operator Ghassan Najjar and engineer Mohammed Reda of al-Mayadeen Network were martyred at dawn on Friday in Israeli attack on their guesthouses in Hasbaya.

on Sunday, with the military saying it carried out a series of pinpoint attacks on Hezbollah targets in Beirut overnight, including several weapons depots and other terror infrastructure.

The strikes caused large fireballs and huge plumes of smoke in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital. Smoke was still billowing from the site after dawn. The Lebanese health ministry did not release information on casualties.

The strikes reportedly targeted a building near a road leading to Lebanon’s international airport and another formerly used by the Hezbollah-run broadcaster al-Manar.

The military said the strikes were preceded by extensive steps to avoid harm to civilians, including advance warning.

The IDF accused Hezbollah of placing its arms storage and production sites under residential buildings in the Lebanese capital, endangering the population, and vowed to keep striking Hezbollah’s military assets in full force.

On Sunday morning, Lebanese media reported another large Israeli strike in Beirut. There was no immediate comment from the IDF.

The Lebanese health ministry said Sunday that Israeli strikes killed 23 people across the country a day earlier. An additional 93 were maimed, the ministry said, without including casualties in the airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs after midnight. The health ministry figures did not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

The military said one airstrike killed Hezbollah’s company commander in the southern Lebanese village of Kafr Kila, who was responsible for a deadly anti-tank missile attack in January. Hader Ali Tawil was behind the attack that killed Barak Ayalon, 45, and his mother Miri Ayalon, 76, when an anti-tank missile slammed into their home in Kfar Yuval, the IDF said.

The strikes came amid continued rocket fire and drone launches from Lebanon at northern Israel on Sunday.

Fighting continued in southern Lebanon as the IDF issued new evacuation alerts for residents of around 25 areas in southern Lebanon, calling on them to head immediately north of the Awali River.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy's udder had begun to ache...
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati called for "pressure on Israel" for a ceasefire as Hezbollah continued to fire rockets and launch drones at Israel. Mikati said he backed US and French efforts for a truce.

Lebanon said the start of the new school year was being postponed until November 4 due to the escalation in fighting. Education Minister Abbas Halabi said the start date for more than one million students would be delayed because of "security risks."

Israel says it has widened operations against Hezbollah to enable the safe return to their homes in the north of some 60,000 Israeli civilians who were evacuated when the Iran-backed terror group began firing rockets on October 8. Hezbollah said the attacks were in support of the Paleostinians in Gazoo

’s devastating onslaught a day earlier.

So far, the skirmishes in the north have resulted in 26 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, and — excluding the soldiers killed in the ground operation — the deaths of 22 IDF soldiers and reservists.

Two soldiers have been killed in a drone attack from Iraq, and there have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.

The IDF’s toll in the ground offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon stands at nine.

Hezbollah has named 516 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. Another 94 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have also been killed.

These numbers have not been consistently updated since Israel began a new offensive against Hezbollah in September, including a ground operation in which the military says at least 440 Hezbollah operatives have been killed.

Zainab Nasrallah, daughter of Hezbollah leader, reportedly killed in Beirut strike
2024-09-28
[JPost] Pull the weed out, roots and all. Surprised he wasn't hiding under her bed as he used to
If confirmed, Zainab’s death could have significant symbolic implications for Hezbollah, potentially influencing the group's response to the escalating conflict with Israel.

Zainab Nasrallah, the daughter of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Friday.

Channel 12 in Israel reported her death, though there has been no official confirmation from Hezbollah or Lebanese authorities.

Zainab, known for her outspoken loyalty to Hezbollah and her family's sacrifices, had previously spoken publicly about the death of her brother, Hadi, who was killed by Israeli forces in 1997.

In a 2022 interview on Al-Manar TV, she described her family’s reaction: "When my brother Hadi was ’martyred,’ my parents did not shed a single tear," reflecting the family's pride in their path.

She noted that her mother viewed Hadi’s death as a "shortcut" to the afterlife, and the family chose to honor his sacrifice rather than mourn traditionally.

A CULTURE OF MARTYRDOM
"We are embarrassed that we have made such a small sacrifice compared to other families of martyrs," she stated, highlighting the family's conviction and commitment to Hezbollah's ideology.

Her statements underscored the public narrative that martyrdom is seen as a noble cause within her family and among Hezbollah supporters.

Lebanon's Hezbollah launches drone, missile attacks against Israel
2024-04-28
[Iran Press TV] The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has launched a wave of drone and missile attacks on the Israeli regime hours after two of its fighters were killed in Israeli attacks targeting border areas in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah said in a statement late on Saturday that its explosive drones and guided missiles had hit military targets in the Al Manara settlement as well as a gathering of Israeli forces concentrated in the 51st Battalion of the regime’s Golani Brigade.

The anti-Israeli operation was large in size compared to similar attacks launched by Hezbollah in recent weeks.

It came as an apparent response to Israel’s attacks earlier on Saturday on areas in southern Lebanon that killed three people, including two Hezbollah fighters.

Hezbollah had issued separate statements saying the fighters, who it said were martyred on the path to liberate the Israeli-occupied al-Quds, had been from the villages of Kafr Kila and Khiam, located in areas near Lebanon’s border with the occupied Palestinian territories.

Army chief reportedly worried about escalation as Nabatiyeh becomes target
2024-02-14
[NAHARNET] Army chief Gen. Joseph Aoun is worried about the situation in south Lebanon, Nidaa al-Watan newspaper said Monday, quoting Aoun's visitors.

Aoun told his visitors that the escalation in the south does not bode well as Israel might drag the U.S. into a conflagration, the daily said.

It added that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has informed Aoun that the entire city of Nabatiyeh has become a target for Israel.

Last week, an Israeli drone strike had seriously wounded a Hezbollah commander on one of the main roads into the city of Nabatiyeh, a region relatively far from the border.

On Saturday, an Israeli drone struck a car near the coastal town of Jadra about 60 kilometers from the Israeli border, making it one of the farthest inside Lebanon since Oct. 8. The strike killed at least two people and wounded two others. The previous farthest strike was the Jan. 2 attack that killed top Hamas official Saleh Arouri in Beirut.

Shiite Duo sources told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, in remarks published Monday, that Israel has decided to cross the red lines by targeting areas north of the Litani river, in an attempt to drag Hezbollah into war.

The targeting of Jadra was not only an assassination attempt, but it also signalled an expansion of the war, the sources said.

Britain's top diplomat David Cameron had said, during a visit to Lebanon earlier this month, that his country is proposing a plan to de-escalate tensions on the Lebanon-Israel border. Pro-Hezbollah al-Akhbar newspaper claimed that the British plan includes the installation of surveillance towers on both sides of the border to ensure that there are no violations of Resolution 1701.

Nidaa al-Watan said Monday, quoting the army chief's visitors, that Hezbollah has not agreed on building the surveillance towers.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Your Tax Dollars Helped Hamas Hide Their October 7 Planning From Israel's Intelligence Services
2024-01-07
[RedState] While nearly everyone agrees that it was a colossal intelligence failure on the part of Israel and its allies that led to the slaughter on October 7, the ensuing war in Gaza, and other instability in the region, the little-known truth is that it was US military aid to Lebanon provided by Joe Biden's national security brain trust that effectively prevented Israeli intelligence from sniffing out the plan and preventing the attack.

To understand this, one has to look at our history with Leb
...an Iranian satrapy currently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else? It is the home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
since the Bush (43) administration. If you find yourself asking how the United States ended up funding the internal security apparatus that rolled up Israel's intelligence networks and blinded them to the coming storm, the answer is a lot like the character Mike Campbell in his novel "The Sun Also Rises" explaining how he became bankrupt: "Two ways," Mike said. "Gradually and then suddenly."

It started, as most foreign policy misadventures seem to, with an overabundance of hubris in George W. Bush's State Department. In 2006, Israel and Hezbollah fought a nasty little war. Even though Lebanon was a virtual Iranian satrapy under the de facto control of Hezbollah, the Diplomatic SmartSet® reasoned that we needed to try to retain some influence. As a result, we began a program of providing training and equipment to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and their Internal Security Forces (ISF). It wouldn't take a genius to figure out what would happen. Still, the logical and foreseeable consequences of training the ISF when Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
politically dominated the country were beyond the grasp of a Harvard Kennedy School grad.

The training and equipment paid immediate dividends to Hezbollah as the ISF began trading Israeli agents and sources to Hezbollah in return for survival. This is from an account of a 2009 Lebanese operation.

The chief of Lebanon’s domestic security forces had a warning for the Hezbollah commander: "You’ve been infiltrated."

With that, Achraf Rifi, head of the U.S.-backed Internal Security Forces, handed over evidence showing that two trusted, mid-ranking Hezbollah commanders were working as informants for Israeli military intelligence, said a high-ranking Lebanese security official with knowledge of the April 2009 meeting.

Wafiq Safa, the security chief for the powerful Shiite Moslem militia and political organization, was silent.

"They were shocked," said the security official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the subject.

Things moved quickly after that. The Hezbollah commander called Rifi the next day to assure him that the murderous Moslem group would "take care of" the alleged infiltrators, who were never heard from again, the security official said.

With the rise of ISIS and the effective dissolution of Syria, more money was directed to the LAF and ISF because they were viewed in Foggy Bottom as the glue that was holding Lebanon together. Money to supply the LAF and ISF with equipment and training continued under Obama and grew under Trump. By 2020, the US was spending $242 million annually in Lebanon, up from $213 million in Obama's last year in office.

The training and equipment were excellent because the ISF rolled up 15 Israeli espionage networks in their next round of arrests that took place in December 2021.

Lebanese security forces have uncovered more than 15 alleged Israeli spy networks, according to a report Monday by the Hezbollah-aligned Lebanese al-Akhbar newspaper.

According to the report, each of the rings operated independently across Lebanon and even Syria. The paper called the discovery "one of Lebanon’s biggest security operations" since 2009.

The operation reportedly began four weeks ago, when the Lebanese Internal Security Forces Directorate began tracking the networks — which it said were tasked with collecting information of Hezbollah and various Paleostinian factions in the country — one by one.

In 2022, Lebanon had a financial crisis that resulted in the LAF and ISF being unable to pay the soldiers and secret police. Because those agencies were considered crucial to Lebanon's survival as a nation, the Biden White House stepped in to reprogram $67 million in Foreign Military Financing to pay for salaries in the LAF and ISF.

The White House made the right decision more than six months ago, when it increased its support for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), following a precipitous devaluation of the Lebanese lira that has left soldiers without a living wage and hamstrung the military’s basic activities. The LAF performs critical functions that go far beyond the role of militaries in typical countries: It provides vital domestic policing of sectarian feuds; it monitors and deters the active threat posed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and similar groups; it patrols the country’s mostly non-existent borders; and in times of crisis—like the present—it is responsible for crowd and riot control. Further, the military is perhaps the sole institution in Lebanon that welcomes members of all sects and serves the national interest rather than the agenda of a single warlord or sect.

Simply put, if Lebanon can’t pay its soldiers, those soldiers can’t hold Lebanon together.

In January 2023, the State Department came through with another $72 million to support LAF and ISF salaries.

As the US-funded ISF was rooting out Israeli intelligence networks, what else was happening in Lebanon?

His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
, the leader of Hezbollah, held an hourslong online meeting in March with an elite group of strategists from all the Iran-backed militias and told them to get ready for a war with Israel with a scope and reach — including a ground invasion — that would mark a new era, according to two participants from Iran and Syria. The participants spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the meeting.

There are conflicting accounts of whether these activities were leading specifically toward last week’s attack by Hamas
...the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,...
, which left 1,200 Israelis dead and shattered the country’s sense of security.

Some people familiar with the operation said that a tight circle of leaders from Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas helped plan the attack starting over a year ago, trained Lions of Islam and had advanced knowledge of it. That account is based on interviews with three Iranians affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, one Iranian connected to big shotship and a Syrian affiliated with Hezbollah.

The above report places the beginning of planning and training for the October 7 massacre of Israeli civilians in the late summer of 2022. This was carried out while a US-trained, equipped, and funded Lebanese counterintelligence service provided operational security for the Hamas-Hezbollah-Iran planning and training period. As if to underscore the abject failure of the "retain influence" and "glue that holds Lebanon together" crowd, no one in the ISF, which we had trained and equipped for over a decade and whose salaries we were paying, dropped a dime to US intelligence or diplomatic personnel.

None of this is to say that the Biden national security goat rope knew the attack was coming, but it is hard to see how the outcome differed from being an active participant. Had we not been overawed by our cleverness and let Lebanon descend into its natural state, which is chaos and violence, Hamas would not have had a secure area in which to plan and to train, and the coming attack would probably have been discovered and prevented.

Berri rejects any modification of Resolution 1701
2023-12-02
[An Nahar] Parliament Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
...Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, head of the Amal Shiite party aligned with Hezbollah, a not very subtle sock puppet of the Medes and Persians...
has stressed that Leb

"has been and is still committed to Resolution 1701 and its implementation."

But "Israel has violated this resolution thousands of times," Berri lamented, in remarks to al-Joumhouria newspaper published Thursday.

Rejecting any modification of the resolution, Berri added: "No one can impose conditions, amendments or new arrangements on Lebanon, and any step in this direction would be rejected and confronted by us."

"What’s only needed is for them to implement the resolution and nothing other than that," the Speaker went on to say.

"Whenever someone raises this issue with us, our answer would be clear and unequivocal: the international border is known and clear. There are 13 (border) points of which some have been settled and some other points remain to be settled, all the way to the Shebaa Farms, the Kfarshouba Hills, the northern part of the town of al-Mari and the B1 point," Berri added.
