Four held over the murders of two women in Gulshan
2018-03-23
[Dhaka Tribune] Four people have been detained in a case filed over the murders of two women in Dhaka.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
them from Nalitabari area of Sherpur district on Wednesday.

RAB sources said detainee Shanjib Chiran was the criminal mastermind of the murder.

RAB Media Wing Deputy Director Major Abdullah Al Mehedi confirmed the detention on Thursday.

Later, in a press briefing, RAB said the alleged killers went to the residence with the intention of stealing money for celebrating their religious festival "Star Sunday."
Apparently Star Sunday is a Christian public holiday in Bangladesh, but I was unable to discover what we might call it.
They had been planning the theft for over a month.

According to the confession by the detainees, they murdered the victims when they thought the two would come in their way. After the murders, they searched the entire house for money. When they could not find any money, the four later left the house ‐ locking the main entrance.

Police recovered the dead bodies of Besat Moni Chiran, 65, and her daughter Sujata Chiran, 40, from their residence in Gulshan Tuesday evening.

In the first information report (FIR), Sujata’s husband Ashish Mankhin said: "Sanjib Chiran [Sujata’s nephew] killed my wife with a knife, and strangled my mother-in-law with the help of three associates.

Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Gulshan cop shoppe, said they might have been murdered over a family feud, property issues, or sexual relations.

I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!

"The turban group was planning to kill a pir (religious preacher) in Dhaka. They were taking their turban training in an area near Bangabandhu Safari Park in Gazipur and Chittagong." said DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam.

The arrestees are Johirul Islam alias Ansar alias Churanto Lorai alias Johir, Khondokar Rajesh Sobhan alias Raju alias Kacha Morich alias Adar Bepari, Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Abir alias Moumachi alias Niyomer Oniyom alias Ek Tukro Megh alias Shada Pata, Abraham Ahmed Al-Tarek, Morshedul Islami alias King Mor Khan, Kazi Bappi Ahmed alias Sazzad alias Tarique Bin Zia alias Mollah Akhter Mohammad Monsur.

The DB men also recovered a laptop and 10 mobile phones from their possession,

Muntasirul Islam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said: "A team of DB (South) made the arrests of six forces of Evil raiding different spots of Dhaka on Wednesday night."

Later in a press briefing, DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said: "The new turban group, Mujahid of Bangladesh started its activities in the country two years ago and has around 30 members.

"They usually invite people to namaz and later indoctrinate them to resort to the path of jihad on Facebook. They are using Facebook to communicate among themselves, to collect members and seek financial help."

He said the turban group was planning to kill a pir (religious preacher) in Dhaka.

Monirul also said they are the followers of al-Qaeda and used the same styles like banned turban outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.
(JMB) for criminal activities.

The arrestees are involved in different professions. They spend a portion of their salary on living and the rest is spent on turban work.

Their big leader, Masum has already been arrested.

The arrestees were produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court with a 10-day remand prayer.

The court, however, granted a six-day remand for each of them.

10 citizens get 'Ansarullah death threats'
2015-05-23
[Dhaka Tribune] A radical Islamist group, believed to be Ansarullah Bangla Team, has threatened to kill 10 eminent citizens of the country including ruling party leaders, academicians and secular activists terming them atheists and anti-Islam.

Copies of the same computer-composed letter, that had the names of the recipients and a warning message from "Alkaida A-Bangla Team:13," were sent to the persons' home addresses on Wednesday. The registered letters were sent by post.

The warning reads: "Must you will prepare for dead."

The names include Prime Minister's Adviser HT Imam, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Awami League politician Tarana Halim, DU Jagannath Hall Provost Ashim Sarker, Gonojagoron Moncho Spokesperson Imran H Sarker, DU teacher Kaberi Gayen, writers Bikash Saha, Paltan Sutradhar and Md Iqbalur Rahim, and Shahjalal University teacher Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal.

In the letter, the names were mentioned chronologically as "H.T Imam (Anti Islam.Advisor), Dr.Arifin Siddik (I.Dusmon. VC, or enemy of Islam), Tarana halim (Nastic or atheist), Ashim sarkar (Hindu moulobad or radical), Imran H sarkar (bloger), Kaberi gain (I, enemyDU), Bikash saha (I.Dusmon), slam Enemy), Md.Iqbalur Rahim (I.enemy), Paltan Sutar (Anti Bang.Raw.Adv) and Md.Zafor Iqbal (se.lar)."

State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the government would ensure security for the listed persons. Detectives observe that through the letter, the bandidos bandidos krazed killers are trying to publicise their organization.

Police recently requested the Home Ministry to impose ban on radical Islamist group Ansarullah, believed to be involved in the killing of at least seven secular activists and bloggers since 2013. It grabbed credit for the murders in Twitter.

Detectives think Ansarullah might have link with international terrorist group Al-Qaeda. In recent video posts, the Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent grabbed credit for the murder of several secular activists including Avijit Roy.

Ansarullah chief Jasim Uddin Rahmani (now in jail) in his sermons, available on the Internet, admitted to his link to Al-Qaeda and Taliban. He also supported Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
and Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
saying that the two organizations are working to establish Islam in Bangladesh. He also professed to kill atheists.

Jasim and seven of his followers are now facing trial for the killing of war crimes trial campaigner and blogger Ahmed Rajeeb Haider on February 15, 2013.

When contacted, Arefin Siddique said: "I received the letter on Wednesday morning. The letter contains a list of several noted personalities, targeted by the members of an bad boy group. We are not afraid after the threat. The senders must be identified and brought under trial."

Jagannath Hall Provost Ashim said: "I got the letter around noon on Wednesday. I am passing my days in fear as my name is mentioned in number four of the list circled with red ink."

He filed a general diary with Shahbagh police yesterday, OC Abu Bakkar Siddique confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune.

DU Proctor Amzad Ali said: "The GD was filed on behalf of the university authorities as some of our teachers received death threats through identical letters."

According to media reports, Ansarullah and other radical Islamist groups targeted secular activists based on a list of "84 atheist bloggers" -- given to a government committee, probing anti-Islamic activities, on March 31, 2013. Of them, nine persons have been killed.

The junior home minister yesterday said there was something mysterious behind the killing of bloggers and the letters.

After attending a programme in the city, Asaduzzaman said these incidents might not be linked. "The people who killed bloggers may have different kind of thoughts. All these 10 persons are not bloggers..." He hoped that the mystery would be unearthed through investigation. "We will take steps to ensure their security."

Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch of police, said they were evaluating security measures of the listed persons.

Also the spokesperson of the DMP, Monirul said: "It can be a publicity move for such a new organization [Ansarullah]."

He doubts Ansarullah has the capacity to carry out such attacks. "But we are not taking the issue lightly."

Fresh attack on Hindus
2013-03-23
[Bangla Daily Star] At least 15 Hindus, including a freedom fighter and three women, were beaten up in a hate attack on their neighbourhood in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat on Thursday night.

In another incident, unidentified criminals set fire to a temple in sadar upazila of Gazipur district early yesterday, damaging four idols.

In Lalmonirhat, a gang of 10 went to the house of freedom fighter Amulya Chandra Roy, 62, around 9:00pm on Thursday and started beating him indiscriminately, reported our correspondent in the district, quoting police.

As family members and neighbours went to his rescue, they too were badly beaten up. The injured were admitted to Hatibandha upazila health complex.

The attackers expeditiously departed at a goodly pace quickly.

None of the victims or community leaders would say anything about the attackers.

Speaking in return for anonymity, some locals said the neighbourhood is surrounded by Jamaat strongholds and that Jamaat-Shibir men had a hand in the attack.

Abu Bakkar Siddique Shyamol, an aide to Motahar Hossain, state minister for primary and mass education and local politician, said the anti-Liberation forces might have been behind the attack to create panic among the Hindu community.

The ruling Awami League would bear the medical expenses of those injured, he added.

Tapas Kumar Sarker, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha Police Station, told The Daily Star the police were working to identify and arrest the attackers.

A correspondent from Gazipur reports: Keshurita Maddhyapara Shree Shree Laxmimata temple in sadar upazila was torched around 3:00am yesterday.

Four idols were damaged in the arson attack. Locals rushed to the scene and put out the blaze before it could wreak more damage.

Gazipur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fouzia Rahman has visited the spot.

SM Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Joydevpur Police Station, said they were looking into the matter.

Bangla: Lashkar's explosives expert captured
2010-10-10
[Bangla Daily Star] Yet another Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative, this time an explosives expert, and his local aide were jugged by Rab in the city's Uttara early yesterday with a huge amount of explosives and bomb making materials.
Good thing they were captured, then.
It was the first arrest of any LeT bomb expert in the country, according to Commander Mohammad Sohail, Rab's legal and media wing director.

He said the battalion had recovered 30 kilograms of high explosive with the capacity equivalent to trinitrotoluene (TNT) and six bottles of liquid chemical from their possession.

However,
The infamous However...
it couldn't be learnt whether the Pakistain-based turban outfit is plotting any bomb attack in Bangladesh or neighbouring country.
Not yet, perhaps. Send for the #7 mustache wax and the #4 truncheon!
No, no, no! It's the number FOUR mustache wax, the real heavy, tarry stuff, and the number SEVEN truncheon, with a rich, Corinthian leather-wrapped handle!
The LeT man, Wazed Khan alias Zafar alias Salman, 27, is a Pak national.
Pakistani and plural aliases? Book him, Danno!
His aide Abu Bakkar Siddique, 49, is a stranded Pak and a resident of Turag Housing in the city's Mohammadpur area.
"Stranded Pak"? What on earth does that mean?
The Rab jugged LeT members first on February 28, said Sohail. So far nine operatives of the internationally banned organisation have been caught by the battalion and of them, four are locals and the rest are Paks.

A joint team of Rab intelligence wing and Rab-1 made yesterday's arrests around 12:15am from Abdullahpur, Uttara after a tip-off from LeT man Maulana Mohammad Imran, another Pak jugged on September 29 in Narayanganj.
How good of the good maulana to share that particular bit of information.
Another Rab team recovered huge explosives from a house at Shahibagh, Savar on October 6 acting on Maulana Imran's information, Sohail added.

Wazed Khan came to the country on April 7 this year with a tourist visa on orders from a top LeT leader, Abdul Kuddus alias Abdul Karim Tunda alias Babaji.
Does Bangladesh get a lot of tourists from Pakistan? Coming to see where Daddy marched through when he was in the army, perhaps to visit the half-siblings Daddy left behind?
Wazed while a Lahore Islamic University student received training on explosives from Abdul Kuddus.

Sohail said, Abdul Kuddus alias Tunda, who is now detained in a Pak jail, visited Bangladesh and held meetings with JMB chief Sheikh Abdur Rahman, who was later executed.
This is getting complicated.
In Bangladesh Mohammad Imran received Wazed and introduced him to Bakkar, the owner of Anika Chemical, Sohail said adding, Bakkar arranged Wazed's accommodation at his residence in Turag Housing.
No doubt Sohail has arranged for Mr. Bakkar's accomodation in the Rab interview rooms...
Maulana Imran and Bakkar provided Wazed with different chemicals to produce explosives. The bomb expert was asked to handover the finished explosives to Maulana Imran, said Sohail.

During interrogation, Bakkar admitted he had bought the chemicals from Lalbagh, Old Dhaka.

In 2007 Bakkar got acquainted with Maulana Imran while Bakkar was residing at a rented house in Mirpur. The two became involved in the business of fake Indian currency.

Several Pak operatives of LeT are active in the country and they have made explosives. But their targets are yet to be known, said Sohail. The Pak operatives were not given the address of the other LeT teams for their safety. The law enforcers could not learn how many of them are now in Bangladesh.

Sohail said the LeT has no unit in the country. But it is trying to use the country as a haven for running business of fake currencies and making explosives.

Rab personnel also seized passports of the two detainees. The passport of Bakkar shows he made eight trips to Pakistain and three trips in India recently.
Oh dear. A good thing he was caught.

Depleted JMB targets Dhaka
2010-05-27
[Bangla Daily Star] The banned Islamist militant group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh has been hoping to attract new recruits by signalling its re-emergence through a series of explosions in the capital, said intelligence sources yesterday.

"Due to the arrest of the group's current chief, their reorganising efforts will fail," Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad told The Daily Star.

"The execution of their former chief Abdur Rahman basically destroyed their network. Recently they were trying to reorganise from the capital." the IGP added.

Current JMB chief Maulana Saidur Rahman alias Zafar, who was arrested by law enforcers on Tuesday, told detectives that his detained third wife Naima Akhter, and two other women who managed to escape Sunday's police raid on their Dania hideout, are well trained in use of grenades and other firearms.

During a preliminary interrogation, he admitted to his earlier affiliation with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

The intelligence sources said JMB operatives have been storing handmade grenades in different hideouts in the capital. The grenades were not manufactured in the capital, they added.

Law enforcers so far raided three JMB dens, two in the city's Dania and the other at Painadi of Narayanganj; but they could not ascertain how many more such hideouts are there in the city, and on its outskirts.

JMB operative Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Shiblu, who had been injured during his arrest on Sunday, told detectives that the group had recently trained some of its female operatives in using grenades, and they have been taking preparations to carry out a series of grenade attacks in the capital on a limited scale.

Shiblu also said the aim of the planned attacks is to signal the group's re-emergence, and to attract prospective new recruits.

An intelligence official said Shiblu was the chief of the planned operation.

The official added that the top brass of JMB used codes in documents outlining the attack plans. The law enforces have such a document in their possession, and have been able to decode it, he said.

The document says the group would carry out small scale attacks in the capital first, to assert its re-emergence.

It also reveals that the group has plans to assassinate some people in the judiciary, and some "traitors", the definition of which are yet to be known by the sleuths.

Meanwhile, arrested Saidur Rahman, Naima Akhter, and full-time JMB member Abdullah-hel-Kafi were sent on six-day remand each yesterday.

Special Branch Sub-inspector Saiful Islam filed a case with Kodomtoli police against the three in connection with terrorist activities.

The group's military wing coordinator Amir Hossain alias Sharif, and another full-time member Nur Hossain alias Sabuj, both of whom had been arrested from Narayanganj on Sunday, were sent to 7-day remand each yesterday.

Two cases were filed against the two on Monday, in connection with possession of bomb making materials, firearms, ammunition, and jihadi books.

Three cases were filed against Shiblu on Sunday, in connection with possession of firearms and explosives, and assault on law enforcers.

Shiblu is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital as he was wounded in a bomb explosion that he himself carried out trying to escape arrest, wounding eight law enforcers as well.

Raid raid JMB chief's flat
2010-05-25
The flat raided by law-enforcers Sunday night was a den of banned Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh and the arrestee was its military wing chief Shiblu, claimed police.

Police have picked up Shiblu's parents and two siblings for squeezing quizzing and recovered nine more homemade grenades from the flat.

Additional Superintendent of Police Zannatul Hasan of the police headquarters said they had information that Shiblu took over the charge of JMB explosive unit after the arrest of former chief Boma Mizan last year. He said Shiblu set up his den there to make explosives for JMB, which is trying to regroup again.

Sources say that a 21-member team consisted of police headquarters, Kadamtoli police and Special Branch of police raided the flat to capture Maulana Saidur Rahman, the current JMB chief.

Detained Shiblu, however, identified himself as Abu Bakkar Siddique and an operative of banned Islamist outfit Harkatul-Jihad (Huji).
Either way he's a dead man walking ...
Zannatul, who led the operation Sunday, told The Daily Star that the name of detained JMB explosive unit chief might be Abu Bakkar Siddique but he took the pseudonyms Nazrul alias Shiblu in his organisation.
The JMB version of a cut-out?
Shiblu was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with burn injuries. He was wounded when a homemade grenade exploded in his hands as he was trying to flee by hurling grenades and firing shots at the police Sunday night. The police were raiding the JMB den at South Dania.
Burned hands? That's gotta hurt. Always the chance for sepsis ...
It appears the Bangladeshi bomb-makers are as incompetent as the Pakistani ones. Djinn-based chemistry fails again.
Rab Director (intelligence wing) Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan, however, said as per the information they have, there is no one named Abu Bakkar Siddique or Shiblu at the helm of the military wing of JMB. "If he is taken in TFI [taskforce interrogation cell] for interrogation, we would be able to confirm the identity," he said.
Right before they shoot him ...
"Who was that incompetent bomb maker?" asked the awed crowd.
Additional SP Zannatul reiterated that they had information that JMB operatives have been regrouping again to carry out subversive activities and Shiblu was the chief of the explosives unit.

At least 10 people including eight policemen and Shiblu were injured during the raid at the den on the second floor of a four-storey building at Shahjalalbagh of South Dania. Three other militants escaped by hurling bombs at law enforcers.

The police also recovered books on jihad and pamphlets that mentioned the name of executed JMB chief Shaekh Abdur Rahman, sources said.

Rab and police sources said executed Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai was the first military wing commander of JMB. After Bangla Bhai became the second-in-command of the militant organisation, JMB chief executed Shaikh Abdur Rahman's brother Ataur Rahman Sunny was given the charge of the military wing.

Sunny was arrested on December 14, 2005, and Mizan alias Boma Mizan took over the charge. After Mizan's arrest on May 15, 2009, Shiblu took up the job, said sources. Rab officials said Maulana Saidur Rahman took the outfit's helm after Abdur Rahman and five others were executed in 2006.
Those burnt hands suggest the Rab have gotten inside the JMB's training cycle. Well done, lads!

2009-10-01
[Bangla Daily Star] A suspected robber was beaten to death and eight others, including five cops, were injured in a mob attack at Napora Bazar under Banshkhali upazila in Chittagong on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Harun, 30, son of Abdus Salam of West Chambal village under Banshkhali.

A group of 8-10 robbers arrived at Napora Bazar riding on two CNG-run auto rickshaws and were preparing to commit a robbery around 10:30pm, sources said.

9 JMB leaders in Nilphamari remanded
2006-02-11
Nine top leaders of banned Islamist outfit Jamaatul Mujahidin Bangladesh (JMB) were placed on a seven-day remand Thursday in Nilphamari for interrogation in connection with the arms and explosives recovery case, police and (Rapid Action Battalion) Rab sources said.
JMB seems to consist mostly of "top leaders," doesn't it? I guess the "bottom leaders" would be the boomers, so they don't get caught.
Rab arrested the JMB leaders during its eight-hour drive from 9 pm on Monday to 5 am on Tuesday at different places in Saidpur, Bogra and Nilphamari district.
Do you get the impression they catch so many of these guys because every time they turn around they trip over them?
JMB's Rangpur 'Divisional Commander' Abdur Rashid Asif, 22, was arrested from Bogra, Nilpahmari 'District Commander' Wahidul Islam Syem, 24, from Thakurgaon, former 'commander' of Nilphamari and Rangpur districts Mahfuzur Rahman Ibrahim, 26, form Rangpur, Rangpur 'District Commander' Moniruzzaman Iqbal, 25, from Thakurgaon, Kurigram 'District Commander' Abu Bakkar Siddique Nahid, 22, from Dinajpur, Ehsar (member) Ehsanul Haque Mezbah, 18, from Dinajpur, Ehsar member Rabiul Islam alias Kamal Hossain, 17, from Nilphamari, Rangpur 'Sadar Upazila Commander' Shahbuddin Ahmed Musa, 19, from Lalmonirhat and 'Commander' of Birampur organisational district in Dinajpur Faruk Hossain Amjad, 32, from Nilphamari.
Most of those guys seem pretty young to be holding such high-powered "top" positions. I have an image of the JMB big turbans giving these guys an impressive title and twenty bucks and sending them forth to wreak havoc. And not bothering to tell them they're expendable.
Following the confessional statements of the JMB leaders, Rab raided several places in Saidpur and recovered huge quantities of arms, ammunition and explosives. Rab filed cases agaisnt them with Saidpur thana and handed them over to police with seized materials on Tuesday. Rab will interrogate them in Dhaka, official sources said.
