Mass grave with 153 decayed bodies found near Baaquba

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: The police discovered a mass grave with 153 decomposed bodies south of Baaquba on Friday, according to the Diala police chief.

“A mass grave was found south of Buhrez district, (5 km) south of Baaquba, in which 153 decomposed bodies of civilians, policemen and army soldiers were discovered,” Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The burial of these bodies dates back to the period between 2005 and August 2008, which has witnessed the control wielded by the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), an armed group affiliated to Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), over the area prior to the Bashaer al-Khayr (Promise of Good) campaign to eliminate the organization,” added Shimari.

Baaquba, the capital city of the volatile province of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Diala coppers arrest 25 hard boyz, whack gunman

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: The Diala police on Thursday arrested 25 wanted persons including an “amir” or leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), killed a gunman from the armed group, defused 14 improvised explosive devices and seized half a ton of a highly explosive material separately, according to a senior security official.

“A police force captured 24 wanted men, including an amir of the AQI, in al-Adhim, al-Khalis district, (15 km) north of Baaquba,” said Diala Police Chief Abdulhussein al-Shimari in statements to Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Bomb squad personnel defused 14 IEDs and seized half a ton of ammonium nitrates, used in home-making IEDs, on the main street in al-Adhim,” he added.

Shimari also said that the police, in a separate incident, shot dead an AQI member while attempting to attack a checkpoint in the area of al-Kabba, Baaquba.

Diala was one of the 10 provinces that came under a wave of bloody acts of violence on Wednesday. The province has been rocked by two car bombs in the district of al-Muqdadiya, (45 km) southwest of Baaquba, the detonation of five houses in Buhrez district, (5 km) south of Baaquba, and six IED blasts in Baladruz, (45 km) southwest of Baaquba.

The attacks left 42 persons killed or wounded, including policemen and an employee of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).

Baaquba, the capital city of the unrest-ridden province of Diala, lies 57 km northwest of Baghdad.

Diala police arrest Baghdad’s Aadhamiya assassin

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Diala police arrested the prime suspect behind the assassinations in Baghdad’s district of al-Aadhamiya more than two weeks ago, according to the province’s police chief on Saturday.

“Acting upon intelligence tip-offs, police forces in Diala raided a house in Baghdad to arrest Amir Mustafa Shakir, the Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in the area of al-Mukhisa in Diala, on charges of involvement in the assassination of a number of Iraqi soldiers in al-Aadhamiya a few days ago,” Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The operation was carried out in coordination with security forces in Baghdad,” he said, not giving further details.

Omar Ibn Abdulaziz street, al-Aadhamiya district, had witnessed on July 29 attacks with improvised explosive devices and armed clashes that left 16, including six army soldiers and three policemen, killed and 14 others, including seven civilians, wounded, according to security source.

The restive province of Diala lies 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

14 arrested, 2 IEDs defused in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Fourteen wanted persons were arrested and two improvised explosive devices defused in separate incidents in Diala on Thursday, according to the province’s police chief.

“The arrests took place in an operation by Diala policemen in different areas of Baaquba city. The arrested persons include four wanted on charges of involvement in terrorist acts,” Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Bomb squad experts also defused two IEDs in central Baaquba city while the police secured protection for the return of a family that had been displaced from Mandili, Khanaqin district, (155 km) northeast of Baaquba, to its original residential place in al-Mustafa neighborhood,” Shimari added.

5 AQI members detained in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Policemen in Diala captured five wanted members of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) on charges of involvement in “terrorism' during a security operation in the southern part of the province while four others turned themselves in to Iraqi forces in another incident, according to the Diala police chief on Sunday.

“Police forces conducted an operation today (May 9) in the district of Buhrez, (5 km) south of Baaquba, arresting five men wanted in accordance with Article 4 of the law on terror,' Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“In a separate incident, four wanted men turned themselves in today to the police, upping the number of surrendered wanted persons in two weeks to 40,' Shimari added.

5 wanted men surrender to police in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Five wanted men turned themselves in to Iraqi police in Diala on Sunday, only one week after 27 others had done the same thing, according to the province's police chief.

"Five men wanted by judicial authorities in accordance with Article 4 of the law on terror surrendered voluntarily to the police," Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"The men are local residents of al-Wajihiya area, al-Muqdadiya district, (45 km) east of Baaquba," he said.

Shimari said the province's police department called on all wanted men all over Diala to turn themselves in so that court rulings to be handed down against them may be extenuated.

8 wanted men arrested, 2 caches seized in Diala

Aswat al-Iraq: Policemen in Diala captured eight wanted men and seized two arms caches in security operations conducted in different areas of the province on Monday, according to the Diala police chief. "The eight wanted men were arrested by virtue of Article 4 of the law on terrorism. The police forces also seized two caches in the area of al-Wajihiya, al-Muqdadiya district, (45 km) east of Baaquba, and Abu Jamal, south of Buhrez district, (5 km) south of Baaquba," Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Shimari did not elaborate on the kinds or amounts of the weapons and munitions seized in the two caches.

Abu Jamal, one of the hot spots in Diala, was the area that saw the emergence of several leaders of Al-Qaeda in Iraq network and the so-called Islamic State of Iraq group. One of those militant leaders was Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, who had been a member of the municipal council of Buhrez district. He was arrested in the Iraqi capital Baghdad in April.

Explosives seized inside Diala house

Aswat al-Iraq: Policemen in Diala seized large amounts of explosive materials inside a house and arrested its owner on Saturday, the province's police chief said. "The police seized these explosives in an operation inside al-Tahreer neighborhood, central Baaquba, based on accurate intelligence tip-offs," Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. "The owner of the house, a suspected member of Al-Qaeda network, was arrested," Shimari said, not giving more information.

Mufti of Islamic State of Iraq arrested in Buhrez

Aswat al-Iraq: Security forces arrested the mufti of the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq group in the district of Buhrez, south of Baaquba city, according to Diala's police chief on Saturday. "Policemen conducted an operation in Buhrez, (5 km) south of Baaquba, capturing Hussein Medhat Mahmoud al-Kilani, the mufti of the armed group Islamic State of Iraq," Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. "Kilani is involved in issuing fatwas (religious opinions) that sanctioned the murder and forced relocation of a large number of Diala residents," said Shimari. He added that Kilani is wanted by the judicial authorities in accordance with Article 4 of the law on terrorism on charges of working with armed groups.

8 arrested, cache detonated in Diyala

Aswat al-Iraq: Policemen detained eight wanted men and detonated a weapons cache in an operation conducted south of the city of Baaquba on Friday, a security source in Diala said.

"Policemen on Friday captured eight members of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) in an operation in Buhrez district, (5 km) south of Baaquba, on charges of killing and force-displacing a number of local residents," Diala police chief, Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari, told Aswat al-Iraq. "The security forces also detonated an arms cache of several improvised explosive devices and explosive belts in the same place," he said.

Earlier in the day, Shimari had said policemen in Diala disrupted an AQI cell of three persons and arrested an amir (leader) of al-Qaeda.
