US targets Houthi sites in Sana'a for third straight day of attacks |
2025-03-18 |
[Jpost] The Houthi movement later announced that it targeted the "USS Harry S. Truman aircraft" carrier in the Red Sea for the third time without providing proof. The US is currently conducting targeted strikes against the Houthis in Yemen's capital, Sana'a, Houthi-owned Al-Masirah reported on Monday night. The strikes have targeted the Al-Habashi Iron Factory, as well as additional areas south of the presidential compound, Al-Masirah added. On Tuesday, the terror organization claimed that it had attacked the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier as well as several American warships in the Red Sea. Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi claimed that this forced US warship to flee to the northern region of the Red Sea. The Houthis did not provide proof of the attacks from any time they claimed to strike. The Houthi's military spokesperson Yahya Saree said that they would not hesitate to continue to strike US assets in the region and that its naval blockade on Israel would continue. "If they continue their aggression, we will continue the escalation," al-Houthi added in a televised speech. MARCO RUBIO SPOKE ABOUT YEMEN AND IRAN US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated President Donald Trump's recent stance that Iran should be held responsible "and face dire consequences" for Houthi attacks. "The Houthis don’t have the ability to do this without Iran helping them, okay?" Rubio said in an interview with Fox News Radio. "So, Iran owns this problem. I mean, they created this Frankenstein monster, and now they got to own it. And I think we should hold them responsible. And as the president has said, if these guys keep doing this, we owe Iran responsible for having created it." |

Iran's sustained clandestine support for the Houthis and the Yemeni group's ability to create a siege mentality around Israeli strikes will help keep the stalemate intact. Nevertheless, the intensifying Israel-Houthi conflict has the potential to metastasise beyond Yemen's borders and threaten Western commercial maritime assets. ISRAEL'S UPHILL STRUGGLE FOR A MILITARY TRIUMPH Although Israeli air defences have been largely effective in limiting civilian casualties from Houthi missile strikes, the attacks continue to be a thorn in Israel's side. The Eilat port is no longer a reliable transit hub and some Israeli vessels have been forced to circumnavigate Africa along circuitous routes. The strikes have caused foreign airlines to cancel flights to Israel and tourism to dry up. These hits to the Israeli economy are unlikely to let up as some Houthi missiles and drones can breach Israel's highly sophisticated defences. Why is Israel finding it so difficult to defuse the Houthi threat? A lack of preparedness for Houthi drone and missile strikes is one contributing factor. Even though Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi declared in March 2018 that ''we are prepared to send fighters in any Israeli war against Leb ...home of the original Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade.... or Paleostine'' and formed a robust alliance with Hezbollah, Israeli officials paid relatively little attention to the Houthi threat. [Regnum] On September 28, the Yemeni Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement announced that it had struck Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv during the return of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from the United States. The airport was attacked by missiles, the movement's military spokesman Yahya Saria told Al Masirah TV. "The missile forces carried out an operation to hit Jaffa Airport, called Ben Gurion in Israel, during the arrival of the criminal Benjamin Netanyahu," Saria said. Netanyahu attended the UN General Assembly. The Houthis also took responsibility for an attack Friday morning, saying they had launched a ballistic missile at a military target in Tel Aviv and a drone at a "vital target" in Ashkelon. The missile was intercepted. The IDF said it was unaware of any drone reaching Israel. Friday’s missile caused no direct injuries, though a 17-year-old girl was moderately hurt when a car hastily pulling over during the siren accidentally hit her. The Houthis hinted on Friday that the morning’s missile was retaliation for an Israeli airstrike Thursday that killed senior Hezbollah leader Mohammed Srur. The Yemeni rebels have launched several attacks targeting Tel Aviv, including a surface-to-surface missile earlier this month. Israel has yet to retaliate for any of those attacks. In July, the military conducted a major strike on Yemen’s Hodeidah port after a drone hit Tel Aviv, killing a man in his apartment. | |

Three US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... to describe a then-ongoing attack, said the US and UK hit a wide range of underground facilities, missile launchers, command and control sites, a Houthi vessel and other facilities inside Yemen. The US F/A-18 fighter jets involved in the strikes launched from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, officials said. Other US warships in the region also participated. The US Central Command, or CENTCOM, said 13 Houthi sites were targeted in a bid to degrade their ability to attack shipping. The Houthis focused Friday morning on a strike that hit a building housing Hodeida Radio and civilian homes in the port city on the Red Sea. Their Al Masirah satellite news channel aired images of one bloodied man being carried downstairs and others in the hospital, receiving aid. They described all those killed and hurt in Hodeida as civilians, something The News Agency that Dare Not be Named could not immediately confirm. The rebel force that’s held Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, since 2014 includes fighters who often are not in uniform. Other strikes hit outside of Sanaa near its airport and communication equipment in Taiz, the broadcaster said. Little other information was released on those sites — likely signaling that Houthi military sites had been struck. In the United Kingdom, the country’s Defense Ministry said Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s conducted strikes on both Hodeida and further south in Ghulayfiqah. It described its targets as "buildings identified as housing drone ground control facilities and providing storage for very long-range drones, as well as surface-to-air weapons." Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the Houthis’ secretive supreme leader, offered an overall corpse count for the strikes up to that point as 40 people killed and 35 others maimed. He did not offer a breakdown between civilian and combatant casualties at the time. The Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on shipping, killed three sailors, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the US Maritime Administration. This week, they attacked a ship carrying grain to Iran, the rebels’ main benefactor. On Wednesday, another US MQ-9 Reaper drone apparently crashed in Yemen, with the Houthis claiming they fired a surface-to-air missile at it. The US Air Force didn’t report any aircraft missing, leading to suspicion that the drone may have been piloted by the CIA. As many as three may have been lost in May alone.

Saria added that the Houthis also attacked the Israeli ships Grace F in the Indian Ocean and Gina in the Arabian Sea, heading to ports in "occupied Palestine." In addition, the rebels attacked two American frigates in the Red Sea. "Yemen's armed forces will continue to obstruct Israel's navigation in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean until its aggression ceases and the blockade of the Gaza Strip is lifted," the statement said. As Regnum reported, on April 7, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Authority reported another attack on a UKMTO vessel in the Gulf of Aden in the Arabian Sea. The kingdom's authorities regarded the incident as an attack and began investigating it. Bloomberg reported on March 21, citing sources, that the Houthis promised not to attack Russian and Chinese ships. According to the publication, the rebels were allegedly promised support from the UN Security Council and other international organizations for this.

The Iranian proxy said it had targeted a British ship and a number of US frigates in the Red Sea, while in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean, it attacked two Israeli vessels heading to Israeli ports. The latest attacks come after a lull of several days in Houthi aggressions, which have disrupted traffic along the vital Red Sea global trade route. The operations took place during the last 72 hours, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised statement. According to Saree, the attacks included a missile strike against a "British ship (Hope Island) in the Red Sea." Vessel tracking websites listed the Hope Island as traveling under a Marshall Islands flag and said it was in the Red Sea as of Friday. Missiles also targeted what Saree described as two Israeli ships, MSC Grace F and MSC Gina. Two tracking sites listed a vessel named MSC Grace F which they said sails under the Panamanian flag. Marinetraffic.com also listed MSC Gina as Panamanian-flagged and said it was last reported in the Gulf. Earlier, British security firm Ambrey said it had received information indicating that a vessel was attacked on Sunday in the Gulf of Aden about 102 nautical miles southwest of Mukalla in Yemen. "Vessels in the vicinity were advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity," the firm said. It did not say who was responsible for the attack or give further details. Separately, a missile landed near a vessel in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday, but there was no damage to the ship or injuries to crew in the incident, 59 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Aden, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said. "The Master of the vessel reports a missile impacted the water in close proximity to the vessel’s port quarter," UKMTO said in an advisory note. "No damage to the vessel reported and crew reported safe," it added. It did not say who fired the missile or give further details. It was not immediately clear if the attacks reported by the British agencies were the same as the latest incidents claimed by the Houthis. Sunday’s attacks came hours after two missiles targeted a ship southwest of the Yemeni Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, according to both UKMTO and Ambrey. One missile was intercepted by US-led coalition forces and the second missed the ship, according to UKMTO. Also Sunday, US forces destroyed a mobile surface-to air missile system in a Houthi-controlled territory of Yemen, the US Central Command said. US forces also shot down one unmanned aerial vehicle over the Red Sea, its statement said, adding that a coalition vessel also detected, engaged and destroyed one inbound anti-ship missile. No injuries or damage were reported. The weekend attacks came as Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with senior Houthi official Mohammed Abdelsalam in Oman on Sunday. Amir-Abdollahian praised the "brave support of the Yemeni nation for the oppressed Paleostinian nation," according to Iran’s foreign ministry. The United States, which leads a multinational flotilla intended to protect Red Sea shipping, has since mid-January launched repeated attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen. British warplanes have also taken part in several of the strikes. In a televised speech on Thursday, Houthi chief Abdul Malik al-Houthi said 37 people had been killed in more than 400 strikes by US and British forces on Yemen since January. "Let us be clear that when ‐ and I hope it is when and not if ‐ these redeployments happen, they will be the first voluntary withdrawal of forces in this long conflict," he said by video conference from Amman. The United Nations ...boodling on the grand scale... announced a deal on the two-stage pullback from Hodeida city and its ports in February, but the redeployment failed to materialise on the ground and the peace effort has since stalled. The United States put the onus on the Houthis to unblock the process and begin redeployments as agreed in the plan. |
