Somali National Accused In Terror Plot Asked For Deportation Over Prison

[RADIOSHABELLE] A man accused of plotting an attack on a federal medical facility in Texas asked a judge in December to deport him instead of sending him to prison, saying he didn’t deserve to spend time behind bars, records show. Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud told federal Judge Michael Watson that he didn’t want to leave his family but called his proposal "completely fair and just." "I truly don’t believe I deserve prison at all," Mohamud said in the Dec. 12 letter, filed in the official court record on Thursday. He added: "So if the concern is risk assessment then deportation would set everyone’s hearts at ease." Golly. Isn’t he just too adorable. We’ve tried him fair — it’s time to hang him high, so he can be sent where he belongs. Mohamud, who was born in Somalia and came to the U.S. at 2 years old, may eventually get his wish. After Mohamud was sentenced to 22 years in prison last week, the local Homeland Security Investigations office said it would seek to strip him of his citizenship and deport him to Somalia. At sentencing on Jan. 22, Mohamud told Watson that he knew what he’d done was wrong and that he’d fallen into the trap of radicalization while abroad. Mohamud, 26, tried to fire his attorney in a second letter dated Dec. 15, saying they weren’t communicating well. A handwritten note on the letter says Mohamud’s request was withdrawn Jan. 9 in court. His attorney, veteran Columbus defense lawyer Sam Shamansky, declined to comment. Mohamud planned to fly to Texas and attack the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth in an attempt to free Aafia Siddiqui ...American-educated Pak cognitive neuroscientist who was convicted of assault with intent to murder her U.S. interrogators in Afghanistan. Shamansky asked for leniency, saying Mohamud didn’t have his father around when he was growing up, was brainwashed while abroad "by professional head twisters" but later realized his error and abandoned his plot. Prosecutors noted Mohamud contacted others from jail after his arrest and told them not to say anything.

[NEWSWEEK] An Ohio man who trained with an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria and allegedly planned to kill U.S. troops was sentenced to 22 years by a federal judge on Monday. Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud, 26, apologized for his crimes and expressed regret during questioning by District Court Judge Michael Watson, The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported. "Do you have any idea how misguided that was?" Watson asked. The 26-year-old from Columbus replied, "Absolutely. I wish I could take it back, your honor." Mohamud was born in Somalia but came to the U.S. when he was 2-years-old. After he became an American citizen in 2014, he used his new U.S. passport to make his way to Syria, where he was eventually trained by the al-Nusra ...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. Mohamud was allegedly planning to meet his brother, an al-Nusrah fighter named Abdifatah Aden, to give him $1,000 and other material support, but his brother was killed, and there's no evidence they ever actually met, according to court documents.

He also admitted to planning an attack in the US upon his return from Syria. Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud, 25, is a Somali-born naturalized citizen of the US. In 2014, he traveled to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... where he crossed the border into Syria, court documents show. While in Syria, Mohamud received training from the al-Nusra Front, a terrorist organization affiliated with al-Qaeda, prosecutors said. "After returning to the US, Mohamud planned to obtain weapons in order to kill military officers or other babus government employees or people in uniform. Evidence seized by the FBI indicates that Mohamud researched places in the US to carry out such plans," the Justice Department said in a statement. He pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him. Ynet adds: Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud pleaded guilty two years ago to terrorism charges, according to court documents unsealed Thursday. Federal prosecutors said Mohamud researched places to carry out the attacks and had booked a flight to Texas. It's unclear why almost two years have passed since his guilty plea and the unsealing of the documents. The Department of Justice said the plea was sealed because of an ongoing investigation.

At Least 15 US 'Citizen Terrorists' Are Also Legal Immigrants

Dozens of the U.S. citizens arrested in recent years on terror-related charges are immigrants admitted to the United States legally who later obtained citizenship. More than 70 U.S. residents have been publicly arrested and charged with conspiring to help, attempting to help, or actually helping terror networks such as Islamic State in recent years. At least 15 of them received U.S. citizenship after being admitted to the country legally, including one of the Boston bombers. Here are five examples. Two immigrants from Pakistan who later applied for and received U.S. citizenship were convicted of plotting to detonate a bomb in New York City in 2012, and were sentenced to a combined 55 years in prison. Raees Qazi, 22, and Sheheryar Qazi, 32 Federal prosecutors accused a Somalian immigrant who became a U.S. citizen of plotting to "go to a military base in Texas and kill three or four American soldiers execution style." The man had trained with a terrorist group in Syria and was told to return to the U.S. and carry out an act of terror. Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud, 23, whose brother was killed fighting in Syria An immigrant brought by his family from Kuwait at a young age and later approved for U.S. citizenship killed four Marines in a shooting rampage at two military centers in Chattanooga, Tenn., in July. Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24 A woman born in Saudi Arabia who obtained U.S. citizenship and taught pre-school in Queens, N.Y., was arrested on terror charges in April. She and a friend also living in Queens pledged allegiance to Islamic State and considered bombing a police funeral. FBI raids on their apartments turned up bomb-making materials, including propane tanks and a pressure cooker, in addition to bomb recipes and jihadi literature. Noelle Velentzas, 28, and Asia Siddiqui, 31 An immigrant from Ghana who obtained U.S. citizenship was arrested in June and charged with conspiring to support a terrorist group after investigators allegedly found he was plotting a terror attack on New York City landmarks in the name of Islamic State. Munther Omar Saleh, 20, who was studying electrical circuitry at a college specializing in aeronautics in Queens The Obama administration has ignored a request from Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and Jeff Sessions for detailed immigration histories of 72 U.S. residents arrested in the past year on terror-related charges.

'Ohio' man plotted attack in US after receiving training in Syria

Front in Syria and returned to the US to carry out a terrorist attack, according to the three-count indictment filed in the Southern District of Ohio. "According to the charges in the indictment, Mohamud allegedly traveled to Syria to train with and fight alongside terrorists," said Assistant Attorney General Carlin. In April 2014, Mohamud left the US to receive training on how to fight with bully boyz in Syria. As a naturalized US citizen holding a US passport, he bought a one-way ticket and traveled to Athens, Greece. He arrived in the US in June 2014 and plotted to attack a military facility or a US prison, according to the documents. Known wolf, not lone wolf... Mohamud's brother was killed in June 2014 while fighting for a branch of al-Qaeda in Syria.
