Al-Qaeda in North Africa appoints new leader to replace Droukdel
2020-11-23
More on yesterday’s announcement.
[France24] Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has chosen a new leader to replace Abdelmalek Droukdel, who was killed in June by French forces, the SITE monitoring group reported Saturday.

Algerian Abu Obaida Yusuf al-Annabi,
...also known as Sheikh Mujahid Yazid Mubarak and Abu Obaida al-Annabi ...
the head of AQIM's "Council of Dignitaries", was named as Droukdel's successor, SITE said.

Al-Annabi has been on the American "international terrorist" blacklist since September 2015, according to the Counter Extremism Project.

He has regularly appeared in the group's propaganda videos, and in 2013 famously demanded that Muslims retaliate against France's intervention in Mali.

AQIM also confirmed the death of Swiss national Beatrice Stoeckli, who was abducted in Timbuktu while working as a missionary in 2016.

Sahel summit agrees need to intensify campaign against jihadists
2020-07-02
[AlAhram] International and regional powers agreed at talks on Tuesday to intensify a military campaign against Islamist murderous Moslems in the West African Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
, with French President Emmanuel Macron saying victory over the jihadists was within grasp.

Militant attacks in the Sahel have increased over the last two years, especially in the tri-border region of Niger, Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
and Mali known as Liptako-Gourma, where local authorities have been overrun.

Mauritania hosted a meeting of the leaders of five Sahel nations plus La Belle France and Spain to plot future strategy in the scrubland south of the Sahara where since 2013 thousands of French troops have been helping countries counter insurgencies.

"The heads of state stressed the need to intensify the fight on all fronts by national and international forces against terrorist groups," the final communique said.

The so-called G-5 Sahel nations comprise Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad - all former French colonies. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also attended the summit, while other EU leaders joined by video.

"We are all convinced that victory is possible in the Sahel. We are finding our way there thanks to the efforts that have been made over the past six months," Macron said after the summit.

Ahead of the summit, a joint statement by the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
and a group of aid organizations painted a dark picture of the situation on the ground.

"The security situation in the Sahel countries has tanked considerably in recent months. Conflicts prevailing in the region are having unprecedented humanitarian consequences," it said.

The joint forces, led by La Belle France's 5,100 troops, have so far targeted the regional affiliate of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, concentrating military efforts on Liptako-Gourma.

French forces said this month that they had killed al Qaeda's North Africa commander Abdelmalik Droukdel
... aka Abdel Wadoud, was a regional leader of the GSPC for several years before becoming the group's supremo in 2004 following the death of then-leader Nabil Sahraoui. Under Abdel Wadoud's leadership the GSPC has sought to develop itself from a largely domestic entity into a larger player on the international terror stage. In September 2006 it was announced that the GSPC had joined forces with al-Qaeda and in January 2007 the group officially changed its name to the Al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb....
. But the G-5 force has been hampered by a lack of funding, equipment and coordination.

La Belle France has long called for more help from its European allies for the mission, which it sees as essential to protecting the security of Europe's southern flank.

Algerian Army Intensifies Operations to Thwart ISIS
2016-05-22
Algeria- The Ministry of National Defense in Algeria announced on Friday that the national army had reportedly killed an extremist at the Bouïra area, a tribal region east of the capital city.

The extremist was killed by a military operation which had been launched a week ago, leaving three extremists dead. The army has stepped up its activities in Bouïra after the military authorities received information indicating ISIS sleeper cells being present in the area.

Special forces, partaking in the military campaign, were seen approaching thick forest zones believed to be the terrorists’ hideout. It was at the same location that a French hiker was abducted in September 2014.

The national army had reportedly killed, in 2014, ISIS prominent leader Abdelmalek Kore who was allegedly responsible for the kidnap.

Three girls have recently escaped from Bouïra to join ISIS in Libya. All three of them are believed to be wives of Algerian militants who were killed by the national army in the past.

On the other hand, the national army announced destroying three terrorist hideouts and neutralizing explosive mines in the Tizi Ouzou province, located 100 kilometers away from the capital.

Tizi Ouzou is known for containing al Qaeda strongholds in the Islamic Maghreb. Abdelmalek Droukdel leader of the Algerian Islamic militant group Al-Qaeda, who has been chased by military intelligence since 2005, is also assumed to be sited there.

The highly tribal area of Tizi Ouzou recently has been experiencing increased security measures aiming to foil any sleeper cells sought for recruitment. The terrorist rings have been gradually terminated over the last few years.

Security reports show that Libyan ISIS members have been transferring units into tribal zones, in hopes of rebooting what they call “Jihad” activities. Border regulation authorities note Libya as an untold threat, which led thousands of army soldiers to line up across borders in order to prevent terrorists from crossing over or traffic arms into Algeria.

Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel discussed terrorism crossing the borders shared by Algeria, Libya and Tunisia in his meeting with British diplomat Mark Lyall Grant.

When Messahel spoke to media, he mentioned that the two-days long meeting had delved into security details and has sought out solutions for posed threats. The state-of-affairs of the Sahel area- the biogeographic zone of transition in Africa between the Sahara Desert to the north and the Sudanian Savanna to the south- currently has the focus of ongoing deliberations with the British delegation.

Terrorism, organized crime, border control and extremist groups such as ISIS, al Qaeda and Boko Haram, said Messahel.

North African al-Qaeda says top figure killed in ambush
2015-12-29
Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you...
The North African affiliate of al-Qaida says one of its leading figures has been killed in an ambush by Algerian soldiers.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, says that Abu al-Hassan Rachid al-Bulaydi, head of the Sharia Committee, was killed on Friday “as a result of an insidious ambush by the apostates,” according to a statement translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.

The statement said he was killed in the Tizi Ouzou region east of Algiers.

The Algerian Defense Ministry said two “dangerous terrorists” had been killed Friday in another part of Tizi Ouzou, and it wasn’t clear whether al-Bulaydi was one of the two.

AQIM leader Abdelmalek Droukdel, is thought to be holed up in the mountainous Tizi Ouzou region. AQIM is blamed for sporadic attacks on soldiers.

Algerian army kills seven militants in al Qaeda stronghold
2013-05-08
The Algerian army killed seven Islamist militants in their stronghold east of Algiers, the defense ministry said on Wednesday, as government forces stepped up operations against suspected al Qaeda-linked fighters.

It was the largest government offensive against militants since an audacious assault on a desert gas plant in January in which 37 foreigners died.

Four militants were killed in an ambush in the Tizi Ouzou province and three others died in a separate operation in the nearby Boumerdes province on Monday night, the ministry said in a statement carried on the official APS news agency.

The two mountainous provinces are where the leader of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Abdelmalek Droukdel, is believed to be based, but there was no indication he had been caught up in the clashes.

Six assault rifles and "an important quantity" of ammunition were also seized.

Algeria: an AQIM network dismantled
2011-02-07
[Ennahar] Algerian security services managed to dismantle, network of Al Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in the south-east, who was preparing attacks in Europe including La Belle France, newspapers reported on Sunday in Algiers.

Fourteen Islamist Death Eaters, including two Mauritanians suspected of links with AQIM and preparing attacks in Europe, were nabbed in late December by security forces in the region of Batna, in the Aures (450 km southeast of Algiers), according to the daily El Watan.

Among them the Salafist leader Ibrahim Ould Mohamed Mauritanian Ouldna presented as the "mufti" (exegesis) of AQIM, who had joined the ranks of AQIM in Algeria in 2008, the newspaper said, citing the Algerian security services.

The Islamist then stayed in the thicket of Tebessa (Far East) and Batna where he organized and trained gangs in Algeria and Mauritania to carry out suicide kabooms and kidnappings of Westerners, the paper added.

The group would hit in European countries including La Belle France, according to the Arabic daily El-Khabar. Ibrahim Ould Mohamed Ouldna was nabbed in late December as he was about to reach the refuge of AQIM leader Abdelmalek Droudkel, said El Watan.

His confession led to the first arrest of another Islamist, Abu Mustapha Debchi, alias Mohamed Al Othman, an electronics engineer at the port of Annaba (east) while preparing to embark to Europe to put in place AQIM cells, the source said.

The confessions of the engineer then led to the arrest of all members of the network in Algeria.

In addition, an Islamist presented as a senior al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) was killed Friday night in the region of Bouira (120 km south-east of Algiers), according to several Algerian newspapers.

Bourihane Kamel, aka Abu Hafs, was also considered the right arm of AQIM leader Abdelmalek Droukdel.

The Orcs and similar vermin were responsible for several attacks in Tizi-Ouzou and corpse-littered Boumerdes, most notably the deadly 2007 assault on a cop shoppe in Yakourene, Liberte reported.

As part of the same court proceedings Monday, the Algerian tribunal imposed a 15-year prison sentence on Ahmed Chouki, 25. After he surrendered to security services in 2009, the Ouled Aissa native identified other suspects who allegedly provided food and information to gangs operating in the region.

French hostages killed in Niger
2011-01-09
[Al Jazeera] Two Frenchies kidnapped in Niger have been found dead following a failed rescue operation.

The two men were found dead following festivities between security forces and the kidnappers, Alain Juppe, the French defence minister, said on Saturday.

"With the operation launched and co-ordinated with French elements in the region, the beturbanned goons were intercepted at the Mali border and several of them were overpowered," Juppe said.

"After the fighting, the two hostages were found dead."

The Rooters news agency reported an unnamed source as saying the the bodies had been flown back to Niamey, Niger's capital.

The two Frenchies were seized on Friday while eating dinner in a restaurant in Niamey. Four gunnies burst into the restaurant and ordered the two men out into a 4x4 vehicle with Benin plates in which other gunnies were waiting, according to witnesses.

One witness said that the gunnies were speaking French and Arabic and were dressed in clothes worn by nomadic tribes in the country's northern desert.

Following initial festivities with Nigerien security forces, in which the national guard chief was reportedly injured, a chase was mounted in an attempt to recover the hostages.

"The Niger national guard immediately gave chase to block them from reaching a zone of refuge, which is a grave threat for our hostages," Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said earlier in a televised address from the French Caribbean region of Martinique.

"At the minute I speak to you, and I'm careful, the Niger national guard is following the beturbanned goons on their route to Mali," Sarkozy said.

"This operation is in progress."

Sarkozy, who urged Frenchies to avoid the west African region until the security situation improved, said the abductors were heading to a safe zone in Mali which would be "extremely serious" for the hostages.

No group has grabbed credit for the kidnapping, but there are suspicions that it could be linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which operates across West and North Africa's vast Sahara desert.

La Belle France is already working to secure the release of five other kidnapped Frenchies seized in Niger in September along with a Togolese and a Madagascan.

They are believed to be being held in neighbouring Mali by AQIM.

In November, Abdelmalek Droukdel, alias Abou Moussaab Abdelouadoud, AQIM's head, said in a message on A -Jazeera, that Osama bin Laden alone could negotiate the release of the hostages.

But Michele Alliot-Marie, the French foreign minister, has rejected any suggestion that La Belle France would negotiate their freedom with bin Laden.
