[NYPOST] US warships have shot down roughly a dozen Houthi drones since President Donald Trump launched airstrikes against the terrorist organization on Saturday, Fox News has learned.

A senior defense official told Fox News of the developments on Sunday.

The drones were aimed at the US Navy's Truman Carrier Strike Group, and were shot down ''well before'' they posed a serious threat, the official added.

The latest military action came after nearly a year and a half of attacks from Houthis, both on commercial merchant vessels and US military ships.

In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump wrote that he had ''ordered the United States Military to launch decisive and powerful Military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen.''

Death toll from US strikes on Yemen rises to 53

The number of injured has risen to 98, including nine children and nine women, the ministry said.

The Ministry reiterated its condemnation of the US aggression and its targeting of civilian structures in Sana’a and several provinces, describing the attack on civilians and civilian infrastructure as war crimes, further adding to the US’s criminal record.

The aggression came a few days after the Yemeni Armed Forces resumed their maritime operation against Israeli-linked ships in the southern Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Gulf of Aden, and the Arabian Sea over the Tel Aviv regime’s blockade on Gaza.

According to a US official speaking on condition of anonymity, the Houthis did fire drones and at least one missile in its first claimed attack. The official said that beginning at about midnight Saturday-Sunday local time in Yemen, the Houthis fired 11 drones and at least one missile over about 12 hours. Ten of the drones were intercepted by US Air Force fighter jets and one was intercepted by a Navy F/A-18 fighter jet. The missile fell into the water far from the ship, and nothing came close to hitting either the carrier or the warships in its strike group.

Washington has vowed to keep striking Yemen until the rebels stop attacking Red Sea shipping, with US President Donald Trump warning he will use “overwhelming lethal force.”

Houthi media reported more explosions on Sunday night, accusing the Americans of targeting a cotton ginning factory in the western region of Hodeida as well as the command cabin of the Galaxy Leader, an Israel-linked ship captured in November 2023. The Bahamas-flagged, Japanese-operated Galaxy Leader is owned by a British company, which in turn is partially owned by Israeli tycoon Abraham “Rami” Ungar. The sources suggested that the liquidation of al-Hadrami via a booby-trapped cycle of violence could mark the beginning of a conflict between al-Qaeda leaders, who use several areas controlled by Islah in Ma'rib and some southern regions as training camps for their operatives.

Clashes in Abyan Province Kill 4 UAE-Backed Gunmen

At least four gunmen of UAE-backed armed factions were killed, including a commander, on Sunday in infighting that broke out in Abyan province, south of Yemen.

Sources familiar with the matter said that Hussein Al-Rabih, commander of the ''Security Belt'' affiliated with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Al-Mahfad district, was killed, along with four of the Security Belt recruits.

The sources affirmed that a number of al-Amaliqa recruits, Giants, were killed during clashes with the STC near ''Al-Qouz point located between Mudiyah and Al-Mahfad districts, north of Abyan.

About 16 recruits from the STC's Security Belt factions were killed in the attack that targeted their gatherings in Wadi Omran area of Mudiyah district last Friday.

The situation in Abyan province is becoming more complicated due to the Saudis obstructing the operations of the pro-Emirati factions in the province, according to accusations issued by leaders and activists in the ranks of the STC

Curfew extended in Haiti's capital as gang violence continues to escalate

[AFRICANEWS] The curfew in Ouest, one of Haiti's ten departments has been extended until March 23, authorities said Wednesday (Mar. 20).

Gang violence continues to escalate in the south-central department which hosts the jurisdictional seat of the capital city.

The escalating violence and unrest have severely disrupted daily life in Port-au-Prince.

The turmoil has left at least dozens dead, displacing thousands who seek refuge wherever they can find it.

"Some people who have no choice but to flee their home, some of them go into the school, the public school, to use them for shelter. And some hospitals, the main hospital in Port-au-Prince, is not really operational from our visit. The hospital is like empty. There are no nurses, there are no doctors to take care of patients and the patients don't go to the main hospital of Port-au-Prince to look for care," China Global Television Network (CGTN) news hound Wilner Bossou said.

The violence has deepened Haiti's political crisis and prompted the Prime Minister to pledge that he will resign, a key demand of the gangs.

Since late February, armed gangs have attacked public institutions including the capital's cop shoppes and the international airport which remains closed.

During the curfew and state of emergency imposed in early March, "the police are ordered to use all legal means at their disposal" to enforce order.

Armed groups have disrupted fuel supplies, preventing fuel trucks from entering the strategic Varreux fuel terminal in Haiti's capital and leaving gas stations deserted.

"As for the gas station, for the past two weeks, there was a gas shortage, which led multiple people, the population to bring cans, so they can find gas to stock in order to cope with the gas shortage. This is the situation today in Port-au-Prince, the capital, which is under attack every day. There is no day passed without listening or hearing some heavy, heavy, heavy attack and heavy guns shootings," Bossou reported.

Since the liquidation of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, the grip of gangs and criminal groups has tightened. Haiti Prime minister had pledged to pass on the baton on February 7 this year but elections failed to materialize, leading to social unrest.

Khalid al-Batarfi had a $5 million bounty on his head from the US government over leading the group al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula over years that saw him imprisoned, freed in a jailbreak, and governing forces in Yemen amid that country’s grinding war.

Though believed to be weakened in recent years due to infighting and suspected US drone strikes killing its leaders, the group known by the acronym AQAP has long been considered the most dangerous branch of the extremist group still operating after the killing of founder Osama bin Laden.

Al-Qaeda released a video showing al-Batarfi wrapped in a white funeral shroud and al-Qaeda’s black-and-white flag. Terrorists offered no details on the cause of his death and there was no clear sign of trauma visible on his face. Al-Batarfi was believed to be in his early 40s.

In the announcement, the group said Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki would take over as its leader. The US has a $6 million bounty on him, saying al-Awlaki “has publicly called for attacks against the United States and its allies.”

Under al-Batarfi, AQAP fell further under the influence of al-Qaeda fighter Saif al-Adel, now believed to lead the terror group after the killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri in a US drone strike in Afghanistan in 2022. That came as Yemen has been locked in a war between the Houthi rebels, who hold the capital, Sanaa, and a Saudi-led coalition backing the country’s exiled government based in Aden.

“Since 2020, Saif al-Adel has been able to convince al-Batarfi of his strategic approach, focused on confronting Western states and their allies in Yemen — the Saudi-led coalition, the Aden-based government, the United Arab Emirates and its allies — rather than confronting the Iranian-backed Houthi movement,” a 2023 report by the Sanaa Center for Strategic Studies said.

Al-Adel is believed to be in Iran, part of a longtime al-Qaeda presence in the Islamic Republic. That’s long been denied by Tehran but backed up by documents seized in the 2011 US raid in Pakistan that killed bin Laden, who orchestrated the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US.

Al-Batarfi’s ties to al-Adel had strained relations in AQAP, experts say. However, it has seen the terrorists become armed with bomb-carrying drones — something the Houthis now use to target shipping in the Red Sea amid the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

Very interesting — a hint that not only is Iran sheltering Al Qaeda’s top leaders, but supplying at least one of its key franchises as well.

AQAP “developed unmanned aerial systems capabilities, establishing a specialized drone unit, with operational training from the Houthis,” a UN report from January says.

That goes well beyond hinting. And the Houthis would only help their enemy on direct orders from Tehran.

“It prioritizes liberating its prisoners to replenish ranks; in September, the Houthis released several AQAP members and explosives experts.”

The Shiite Zaydi Houthis have previously denied working with AQAP, a Sunni extremist group. However, AQAP targeting of the Houthis has dropped in recent years while the terrorists continue to attack Saudi-led coalition forces.

Yemen’s history and tribal structure long has seen alliances rapidly shift, something its late strongman President Ali Abdullah Saleh referred to as “dancing on the heads of snakes.”

Al-Batarfi, born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, traveled to Afghanistan in 1999 and fought alongside the Taliban during the US-led invasion. He joined AQAP in 2010 and led forces in taking over Yemen’s Abyan province, according to the US.

In 2015, he was freed after an AQAP raid that saw the terrorists capture Mukalla, the capital of Yemen’s largest province, Hadramawt, amid the chaos of the war. A photo at the time showed al-Awlaki with a Kalashnikov rifle, posing inside a government palace there.

AQAP was later pushed out of Mukalla but has continued attacks and been the target of a US drone strike campaign since the administration of then-president George W. Bush.

In 2020, there had been claims that al-Bartafi had been detained, which later were denied. In 2021, he appeared in a video by the terror group and referred to the January 6 riot at the US Capitol as “only the tip of the iceberg of what will come to them, God willing.”
