US Shifts SOF Priorities
2025-05-13

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin is in italics.

[ColonelCassad] The United States has defined future priorities in the development of special operations forces (SOF).

On May 11, during a briefing as part of the "SOF Week" in Tampa (Florida), Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations Colby Jenkins announced the main priorities according to which the SOF reform is planned, previously announced by the new Secretary of Defense Hegseth.

- Rebuilding SOF and its structure to the requirements that will prevail in future conflicts.

- SOF fighters must be as effective as possible.

- Training of new personnel must meet new standards that will be determined by the conditions of future conflicts.

- Development and construction of SOF will correspond exclusively to strategic interests.

- Control over the distribution and use of resources will be strengthened.

Regarding the first point, the United States has determined that it is now necessary to move from old formations and units, mainly optimized to respond to crisis situations and the fight against terrorism, to new "adaptable and multi-domain SOF formations." That is, moving away from standard units like the 75th Ranger Regiment to smaller, more mobile units using the latest intelligent systems and technologies that will operate in a strategic hybrid conflict.

In terms of "improving efficiency" and "training," the priority here will be to train future operatives who, in their physical and mental qualities, must be able to cope with "future high-tech conflicts," capable of using high-performance military technologies and systems, and operating autonomously in an environment controlled by the enemy.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the future of armed conflict will be unlike anything SOF has ever encountered before. Therefore, it is necessary to train units that can combine traditional actions with actions in cyberspace, electronic warfare, and reconnaissance. Conduct irregular warfare using various regional local forces, from the stage of strategic competition to strategic conflict.

As for the focus on strategic interests, everything is generally clear here. The tasks of such units will be the creation of regional problems (for example, the organization of coups and internal armed conflicts) in the areas of interest of strategic opponents, which will entail corresponding costs and tie "geopolitical" competitors in regional conflicts, with all the ensuing consequences. And so on and so forth. The fight against global terrorism is no longer a priority.

Regarding the strengthening of control over funds and resources, everything is clear here. They will cut as much as possible the costs of bureaucracy, which does not carry any military effectiveness.

At the same time, what is important, in reforming SOF, so to speak, wishes and proposals "from below" will be taken into account.

It is obvious that preparations for future conflicts are in full swing. In general, the right conclusions are being drawn from the SVO.

The intentions to increase the effectiveness of SOF are quite obvious.

Army kickstarts possible recompete of Microsoft's $22 billion IVAS production deal
2025-01-30
[BreakingDefense] The service issued a request for information today for IVAS Next, giving industry until late February to respond.

The US Army is taking the next step in recompeting its multi-billion dollar mixed-reality goggle production contract with an official ask to industry to send in viable options.

The service published its new Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) Next request for information today, giving interested companies until Feb. 26 to respond with their solutions for the combat-suitable heads-up display.

“IVAS provides soldiers and squads a single platform for increased lethality, mobility, and situational awareness necessary to achieve overmatch against current and future adversaries,” the Army wrote in the release. “It is a ‘fight first’ system with the benefit of rehearse and train capabilities.”

While the RFI doesn’t guarantee the service will recompete its current 10-year production contract with Microsoft valued up to $22 billion, it does kickstart such a process after surveying the market last year. Although the Army did not detail a competition schedule or acquisition plan, it offered up a peak at problems its looking to solve with IVAS Next including “known visual comfort limitations” such as “visual discomfort and nausea from virtual, mixed, and augmented reality headsets.”

Microsoft did not immediately respond to questions about the new RFI today but has previously said it will throw its hat in the ring. Anduril founder Palmer Luckey has also teased development of a new mixed-reality device, though it is not clear if this would be a partnership with Microsoft. Massachusetts-based Kopin has also said it’s interested in completing, while companies like Palantir may also be eyeing a bid.

One industry source closely following the program welcomed today’s RFI, saying it signals that the Army is ready for a new approach and has seen “competitive/superior” technology on the market and is ready to move forward.

Initially pitched as a game changer for the service, the current IVAS contract is based around Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 heads-up display. The idea was a single device soldiers could use both in combat (including under the cover of darkness) and for virtual training. However, reports began emerging in 2021 about problems with the device, followed by a scathing Pentagon inspector general report that detailed soldiers complaining of discomfort, dizziness, nausea, and system reliability.

Service leaders publicly stood behind the program at first, before they began tempering expectations and splitting the program up into three initial versions — the 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 iterations of the goggles. (The service has acquired 5,000 1.0 units, with plans to acquire an additional 5,000 1.1 units for limited use.)

It then billed the new 1.2 version as the make-or-break upgrade — an iteration to correct past problems, in part, by transitioning the device from a helmet-like display with a 70-degree field-of-view, to a hinged, flat design with a 60-degree field-of-view that soldiers can flip up.

But while the service worked with Microsoft on the redesign and testing, it also began teasing an IVAS Next initiative. After attending Army-led industry days and one-on-one meetings with the government last year, a trio of industry sources independently told Breaking Defense they were preparing for a new open competition to decide who wins a lucrative contract to produce the headset.

In tandem, Army leaders began taking inventory of all of their night vision devices to help decide just which units need what and help define IVAS Next requirements for an upcoming competition, one service official told Breaking Defense last year.

Specifically, members of the from the 75th Ranger Regiment were tasked with running IVAS 1.2 through the ringer alongside dedicated night vision systems like the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular (ENVG-B) and another system dubbed PVS-14, the official told Breaking Defense.

“They’re going to provide the best feedback in terms of, here’s what the ENVG-B can provide versus a PVS-14 versus the capability inside of IVAS,” the official said. The goal is for those Rangers to provide a “more mature look” at how they use night vision while also answering questions about the ideal IVAS form factor, battery needs and more.

Biden Insults A Combat Veteran Directly-President Biden Says Beau Biden's Bronze Star Is Worth More Than Representative Jason Crow's Combat Award
2024-07-18
[RedState] In a leaked Zoom call with moderate House Democrats on Sunday, President Joesph Biden once again used his dead son, Beau Biden, this time, to insult and denigrate the military and combat service of Colorado Congressman Jason Crow (D). Biden was unhinged as he told Crow to "tell me who did something that you’ve never done with your Bronze Star like my son!" President Biden was attempting to convey the message that he was fit and able to continue on with his campaign and snapped at Crow when he politely expressed his concerns to the president.

Instead of addressing Crow's and other moderate Democrats' concerns, Biden snapped at Crow and went on a full-blown assault, which ended with an attack on his Army and combat service and comparing it with his son Beau's service. Biden specifically ridiculed Crow's Bronze Star in a pathetic and out-of-bounds attack, which the campaign did not deny or dispute.

[I]t's Biden's shot about Crow's Bronze Star that stands out the most. It's not debatable that the president was mocking and belittling the representative's service in an attempt to claim that he's accomplished more than Crow. Biden randomly bringing up his deceased son is not at all surprising and is a familiar tick. In this case, though, the president was trying to dismiss Crow's multiple combat tours by falsely suggesting Beau Biden had done more with his Bronze Star despite being in a non-combat role.

From there, the president began screaming that he didn't "want to hear that crap" in response to Crow's gentle criticisms.

Beau Biden served in the Delaware Army National Guard as a JAG (Judge Advocate General) officer and served approximately one year in Iraq, assigned to the 261st Signal Brigade. He served from 2003-2009, obtaining the rank of Major before he died. During his time in Iraq, Beau Biden did not see combat, nor did he lead troops in any combat mission. His role as a JAG officer was an advisory role to American forces, usually when it came to rules of engagement during certain operations and other legal issues that came up. During/for his time in the National Guard, Biden was awarded two medals of note: a Bronze Star medal and a Legion of Merit, with the latter being awarded posthumously.

Representative Jason Crow, however, has a slightly different military background. Crow joined the Army in 2002, obtaining the rank of Captain before leaving the service in 2006. Crow served one tour in Iraq during the initial invasion in 2003, where he served as a platoon commander in the 82nd Airborne Division. Crow was awarded the Bronze Star with the "V" device for valor for actions during the Battle of Samawah. He then transferred over to the 75th Ranger Regiment, where he deployed to Afghanistan twice and was attached to the Joint Special Operations Task Force on the Pakistani border.

President Joe Biden told Crow that his service in combat didn't mean anything close to Beau's non-combat Iraq experience five years after the invasion. Putting aside that minor detail, what Biden did was tell an actual combat veteran that the Bronze Star he received for actions taken in the heat of battle didn't matter or did not amount to much of anything compared to Beau's. As a combat veteran myself, this is both infuriating and disgraceful. But for more reasons than you think.

Hung Cao: Biden surrenders America for the sixth time
2023-08-09
[FoxNews] President Biden has abandoned his sixth U.S. embassy in less than three years. His first was the atrocious withdrawal from Afghanistan, where I had completed my last combat deployment six months before.

Afghanistan was stable enough and the fledgling Afghan National Defense Security Forces (ANDSF) were just learning to stand on their own two feet. Our plan was to leave 2,500 special operators as a quick reaction force. Joe Biden neither approved nor disapproved the plan, resulting in the loss of 11 Marines, a sailor and a soldier.

As a contingency, if we had to evacuate, the 75th Ranger Regiment was to surround Bagram Air Base while we flew everyone out, and they would fold in at the end and exfil. Biden’s team gave up Bagram to the Taliban before anything else, leaving us with no plan B.

The additional U.S. Embassy evacuations in Ukraine, Belarus, Sudan, Haiti and now Niger show Biden’s failed foreign policy and weakness. While Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is bowing multiple times to greet Xi Xiping, and Secretary of State Tony Blinken is going on talk shows, China, Russia and Iran are collecting valuable diplomatic equity around the world.

What was Biden’s excuse? We didn’t have the forces? What about the Marine Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST) company stationed in Rota, Spain, whose job is exactly for that task? Or better yet, why not call the special operators in Northern Niger, in Agadez?

When there is a leadership void in the world, there is a long line of countries waiting to fill that void. In less than three years, we have left a huge crater in the world diplomatic forum.

The Abraham Accords brought peace in the Middle East for the first time in my life, and before the ink dried, those countries quickly turned to China for leadership. Iran is rattling its saber in the Persian Gulf, taking over commercial ships, and the insurrectionists in Niger are waving Russian flags.

We need leadership in Washington, D.C. Not bureaucrats or lifelong politicians. We need doers and people who have served this nation, not for glory or riches, but for the honor to just be Americans. This is why I am running for the U.S. Senate against lifelong politician Tim Kaine.

Virginia needs someone who believes in the same values of God, family and country, but more importantly, Virginia deserves someone who will fight for them, not special interest groups. We need a strong legislative branch and a strong judicial branch for checks and balances on the executive branch. It’s time to stop surrendering.

Hung Cao is a retired Navy captain who served in Special Operations for 25 years. He is a refugee from Vietnam and immigrant to the United States after his family escaped in 1975 shortly before the fall of Saigon. Cao is a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Virginia. He lives in Purcellville, Virginia, with his wife and five children.

19:31 At Orekhovo-Polozhsky direction the command of the 10th Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine began organizing the equipment of command posts in the area of Primorsky, Veselyanka and Kamyshevakhi.

The transfer of KP 10 Army Corps occurs primarily due to a change in the plan of the Nazi command about the direction of the main attack, since the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not achieve any serious success, even at a tactical level, in carrying out offensive operations in the directions of Orekhovo-Rabotino, Malaya Tokmachka-Verbovoye, and the losses incurred do not match the results achieved.

The updated plans of the enemy are to deliver the main blow in the direction of Stepnogorsk-Chervonoarmeiskoye, followed by the blockade of Vasilyevka.

Purpose: access to the ZNPP and its subsequent blocking.

The frontiers that the enemy previously considered as the direction of delivering the main strike: the settlement of Orekhovo-Rabotino, the Malaya Tokmachka-Verbovoye command of the enemy plans to use as a direction for delivering a flank strike.

The start of offensive operations is planned after the completion of the regrouping of units of the 10th Army Corps, the readiness deadlines have been shifted from June 29 to July 6, both due to weather conditions and due to the constant strikes of the RF Armed Forces on the rear of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the same time, the enemy command is preparing
to resume the offensive in the Vremievsky direction.

As part of this training, mine clearance is underway in the defense area of 231 about 128 Separate Air Assault Brigade, the transfer of additional personnel is organized.

Ours continue to improve the line of defense and heavily mine the approaches to their positions.

19:00 Video– A captured Ukrainian soldier: during our training in Europe, we were told that we needed to kill as many Russians as possible.

Prisoner of war Vitaly Sery, despite the fact that he was trained in France, did not acquire any important military skills. He says that during his studies in Europe, a strong emphasis was placed on psychological work: the Ukrainians were told that they needed to kill as many Russians as possible.

18:35 Vremievsky ledge setting as of 17.00 June 28, 2023

In the area ofthe Vremievsky ledge, three company groups of the 35th Naval Infantry Regiment and the 128th Regiment of Troops on several armored combat vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles entrenched themselves in the area west of Staromayorsky. A little to the north, members of the 31st Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Rivnopol took up positions.

Judging by the movements of the enemy, the Russian fighters withdrew from their positions between Staromayorsky and Rovnopol. At the moment, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are equipping strongholds, mining approaches, and deployed ATGM crews. In addition, a unit of the 37th Naval Infantry Brigade arrived in the area.

Now the DRG of the 88th battalion of the 35th Naval Infantry Regiment has advanced in the direction of Priyutnoye, trying to strike at the flank of the defense of the Russian army. At the same time, a simultaneous attack from Levadny and Rovnopol is not ruled out.

18:05 Elusive "barbarian": combat work of crews of 152mm howitzers D-20 artillery units of the Western Military District

In one of the directions in the zone of the special operation, the personnel of the artillery battery of the "Western" group of troops inflicted fire damage on the area of accumulation of armored vehicles and manpower, as well as on the ammunition depots of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The wandering howitzer D-20, together with the crew, which dubbed the gun with the female name of Varvara, is one of the most productive, well-coordinated and elusive units for the enemy on this sector of the front.

“Don’t praise us too much, jinx us,” the gunners say jokingly. And there is something to praise. In addition to effective maneuvering tactics and high performance, the guys mastered a wide range of ammunition. On account of the calculation of dozens of hit targets - enemy mortars, his artillery, fortified oporniks and camouflaged observation posts.

17:36 Video- A fierce battle: the infantry of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was able to break through to our trenches on the flank of Artemovsk, but was destroyed

The drone of the Airborne Forces recorded one of the last failed attempts by the infantry of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the support of the BMP to advance in the Soledar area.

An ATGM hit an enemy vehicle, and the APU militants tried to run away under fire.

During the battle - all the infantry was destroyed by the Tula landing. Such rollovers here several times almost every day. Fights are fierce.

17:01 Video- Statement by the head of the press center of the Center group.

- In the Krasno-Limansky direction, units, with the support of armored fighting vehicles of 21 and 42 Mechanized brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, attempted to regain lost positions. As a result of the artillery fire of the "Center" grouping of troops, the enemy retreated, and two armored combat vehicles, two pickup trucks and significant losses among the personnel were also destroyed.

- st. Kuibysheva, 41 - a private residential building, a utility building was also damaged.

n.p. Yasinovataya:

- a fire was recorded at the Bus Station in the city of Yasinovataya.

15:55 Video– A captured soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine spoke about the heavy losses and forced mobilization in the country

In some villages, only the disabled and the elderly remained, says Ukrainian prisoner of war Mikhail Tsypan. Due to a shortage of people, the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine sends those who were forcibly mobilized to the line of contact, where untrained servicemen often surrender in the very first days.

15:30 About the rocket blows of the Russian Federation in Kramatorsk

On the evening of June 27, Russian troops attacked the RIA Lounge restaurant in the center of Kramatorsk with an Iskander ballistic missile.

In the arrival area were mercenaries, among whom managed to identify Alex Gallant (Alex Gallant), Arnaud Dedeker (Arnaud Dedecker) and Nick Dukvorta (Nich Durkworth), as well as three Colombian citizens. In one of the video from the field, you can also see that one of the wounded has a tattoo of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment of the US Armed Forces on his arm.

Coordinates: 48.7353775, 37.5870549

However, foreigners were not the main target of the strike at all: there were several specific representatives of the command staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the ranks up to the general at the facility. As Elder Edda rightly noted, this is indicated by at least a parked army SUV without a driver that got into the frame.

The statement of the SBU about the capture of an employee of a gas transportation company who made covert filming of those inside the restaurant also speaks in favor of the version. Such extremely quick work to find spotters usually occurs in the event of a hit on important locations.

Unfortunately, the strike on the object in Kramatorsk was not without casualties among civilians. In total, local authorities reported the deaths of 10 people, but it is unlikely that they included those who were the real target of the strike: as often happens, their names will “pop up” in the Ukrainian media after some time.

15:00 Video– Captured Ukrainian mobilized servicemen.

They were trained in Europe, but gave up in the first battle, because they understand that it’s better this way.

14:30 Summary Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on the progress of the special military operation (as of June 28, 2023)

End point for mercenaries - Kramatorsk
2023-06-29
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets

Turkish channels report that in Kramatorsk, the loss of NATO mercenaries/instructors amounted to more than 100 people as a result of yesterday's missile attack.

These people, under the guise of volunteers, trained the Ukrainian army, and also participated in hostilities. The instructors burned themselves, starting to mark each other in stories and upload places of their voyages and favorite places for lunch.

CIPSO forgot to tell the British mercenary how to properly comment on Instagram videos. The rubble has been cleared for days.

Plus, as a result of this strike, the command staff of the 56th motorized infantry brigade was destroyed (one of the battalion commanders noted something and gathered the brigade officers in a cafe).

A similar attack was also carried out in Zaporozhye, but there are still few details.

From the dzen.ru page of Russian military correspondent Aleksandr Kots:
The results of the strike on Kramatorsk

✔️Several foreign mercenaries showed up at the site of the strike, who, however, did not hide their presence in Ukraine and actively shared the details of their everyday life in social networks. Alex Gallant, Arno Dedecker and Nick Duckworth were seen among those who came on the "safari".

✔️In one of the videos, a tattoo of a wounded man is clearly visible, indicating belonging to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment of the US Armed Forces. Either an instructor, or a mercenary, or they are there.

✔️Another video shows a man in a uniform with the emblem of the 101st Airborne Division of the US Armed Forces.

✔️ Foreign journalists and three Colombians were also at the facility - writer Hector Abad, politician Sergio Jaramillo and journalist Catalina Gomez.

✔️Among those liquidated there are also Ukrainian military. For example, the 22-year-old member of Azov (banned in the Russian Federation) Artyom Sukhovey.

✔️On one of the videos with the aftermath of the strikes, a voice-over says that there are only soldiers under the ruins.

✔️According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the targets of the strike were the administration of the 56th brigade and other higher command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine that had gathered in the Kramatorsk cafe.

Says Scott Ritter, via regnum.ru:
Ritter called the target of the strike of the Russian Aerospace Forces on Kramatorsk

The Russian Aerospace Forces, with a strike on Kramatorsk, eliminated a large number of American mercenaries, Scott Ritter, a former intelligence officer of the United States of America, said in an interview with journalist Garland Nixon.
Dear Mr. Ritter has been a professional, pro-Russia pundit for several decades. But while reasonably bright, highly trained, and connected internationally, his illegal fondness for underage females is prime blackmail material, and so we cannot judge how much of what he says when in anti-America mode is actually his own evaluation, and how much has been required of him by inimical forces. Unless he went native, also a distinct possibility for the professionally disappointed.

Mr. Nixon, on the other hand, after a career in law enforcement that he left as a major, has a second career as a radio and television pundit and talk show host on progressive stations.
“The target that was hit in Kramatorsk. <...> There was a whole bunch of American military personnel there ... They flew there from Romania on two Black Hawk helicopters. And they turned off the transponders when they crossed the border ,” Ritter said.

According to him, American servicemen arrived in the combat zone to provide assistance to wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Ritter said that among the liquidated Americans were military advisers and combatants.

Media and networks miss an annual US Army event in Ga., but you know why
2023-04-22
[American Thinker] Last week, I was in Fort Benning, Georgia, attending the Best Ranger Competition as a member of the media. The three days of events was something far more than I had anticipated. While I was there to learn more about Ranger training, tactics, and culture for my writing projects, what I found instead was a bastion of pure patriotism and Americana.

The Best Ranger Competition is a three-day test of mental and physical endurance undertaken by two-man Ranger teams from a number of divisions and commands of the U.S. Army. The participants push themselves for long hours both day and night, undertaking feats to test not just their stamina, but their ability to think and solve problems.

On day one, before the break of dawn, the teams go on a run for nine miles, carrying an 50 lb bag of sand on their shoulders. From there, in full uniform, they swim a pond, then undergo a grueling obstacle course, climbing tall obstacles, swimming in mud under barbed wire, etc. They run to another set of physical challenges, then board helicopters and are taken to an urban combat center, where they are dropped on the roof of a building they then clear. There's no break for the weary. They move out carrying 50 lb ammunition canisters, climbing several walls, then mount an urban assault on another structure. All of this before noon!

Home Front: WoT
Biden taps combat-hardened officer to lead Central Command, which works with Israel
2022-01-08
[IsraelTimes] Erik Kurilla gained extensive experience in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars

A senior Army three-star general with extensive experience in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars has been nominated to become the top US commander for the Middle East.

President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S., father of Hunter, close friend of an imaginary negro named Corn Pop. He blames Trump for losing Afghanistan....
has nominated Army Lt. Gen. Erik Kurilla to head US Central Command and be promoted to four-star general, according to multiple US officials.

The Senate Armed Services Committee notice says only that Kurilla has been nominated to become a general, and does not detail which job he would get if confirmed. But his nomination for US Central Command has been expected for several months. US officials confirmed the planned job on condition of anonymity because it has not yet been made public.

If confirmed by the Senate, Kurilla would replace Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, who has led the command for the past three years and is expected to retire.

CENTCOM officially assumed responsibility for the US military’s relationship with Israel at the beginning of September. The IDF and CENTCOM have sine held a number of joint exercises.

Israel had previously been kept in the area of responsibility of EUCOM in order to prevent possible tensions between CENTCOM and the Arab and Moslem nations under its purview, many of whom did not maintain formal ties with Israel, and would therefore not want to be considered as mutual allies. The US Central Command’s area of responsibility stretches across the Middle East to Central Asia, including the Persian Gulf region, as well as Afghanistan and Pakistain.

In recent years, however, CENTCOM’s Arab allies have increasingly developed relations with Israel, some informally, so these issues have largely faded.
Thank you, President Trump.
Kurilla would take over as the Pentagon continues to try and shift its focus to the Indo-Pacific and counter a rising China, and to bolster defenses against Russia in Europe, where Moscow is massing troops near the Ukraine border, fueling fears of an invasion.

The US has withdrawn all forces from Afghanistan and has now formally shifted its role in Iraq from combat to advising and assisting the Iraqi forces. But the US strategy to put more emphasis on China and Russia has been repeatedly stymied by Iran, forcing the Pentagon to maintain a significant troop presence across the Middle East and cultivate strong relations with allies in the region.

In recent weeks, Iranian-backed militia groups have increased the pace of their attacks on US and allied forces in Iraq and Syria. The groups have made it clear they want all US troops out of Iraq, and have vowed to continue attacks until they are gone.

Kurilla, who is from Elk River, Minnesota, is currently commander of the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, but previously served as the chief of staff at Central Command, working for McKenzie and, before that, Gen. Joseph Votel.

He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1988, and has served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, commanding conventional and special operations forces. He commanded a Stryker battalion in Iraq in 2004, and was shot and maimed.

He later was commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment, overseeing combat teams deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. He also served as director of operations at the Joint Special Operations Command and was commander of the 82nd Airborne Division.

The Army's Next-Generation Squad Weapon is a big hit with special operators
2020-05-15
[Business Insider] The 75th Ranger Regiment, Green Berets and other US special operations ground forces will be equipped with the conventional Army's Next Generation Squad Weapons.

"We are an enthusiastic supporter of the Army's 6.8 mm Next Generation Squad Weapons," Col. Joel Babbitt, of Program Executive Officer Special Operations Forces Warrior, told Military.com recently. "We expect there will be Next Generation Squad Weapons in our formations as soon as we can receive them via fielding."

The Army is in the final phase of evaluating NGSW prototypes from General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Inc., Textron Systems and Sig Sauer Inc. to replace the 5.56 mm M4A1 carbine and the M249 squad automatic weapon in infantry and other close-combat units.

If all goes as planned, Army modernization officials will select the final design for the rifle and automatic rifle variants from a single firm in the first quarter of 2022 and begin fielding them a year later.

PEO SOF Warrior is working with the Army to become part of the NGSW fielding plan at some point over the five-year, future-year defense plan, Babbitt said.

US Special Operations Command hasn't always been as supportive of conventional Army weapons programs, such as the failed XM25 Counter-Defilade Target Engagement System, which was known as the Punisher.
