Chile Sentences Tren de Aragua Members to over 500 Years Total in Prison
2025-03-08
[Breitbart] A Chilean court in the northern province of Arica issued prison sentences of roughly 560 years against 34 members of Los Gallegos on Thursday, a local “armed wing” of the Tren de Aragua terrorist organization.

The convicted men, 31 Venezuelan nationals and three Chileans, were found guilty of multiple charges ranging from illicit association, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, kidnapping, and homicide to others. The sentence, which concluded nearly an entire year’s worth of trial proceedings, was reportedly read in a hearing without access to the press and under strong security measures.

The Chilean public prosecutor’s office described the trial process as “historic” in a Thursday press statement and informed that one of the men was given a life sentence for committing two homicides in addition to a 16-year sentence for the crimes of robbery with intimidation and illicit association.

Three men, the prosecutor’s office further explained, were given sentences totaling 44, 39, and 32 years for various offences, while the remainder were given prison sentences ranging from 541 days to 20 years.

The prosecutor’s office stated that the trial was considered one of the “most relevant at the national level in the fight against transnational organized crime due” to the number of defendants and the crimes investigated. The trial featured more than 35 witnesses, including an undercover agent who infiltrated the group, as well as more than 100 wiretapped telephone recordings, videos, and analysis of the gang’s own accounting notebooks.

The investigation determined that Los Gallegos established itself in Arica in three phases and deemed the region a place to commit various crimes, from which they were able to spread to other areas of Chile. Additionally, Chilean prosecutors were able to link Los Gallegos to Tren de Aragua, with most of the Venezuelan defendants sharing “identity or family ties,” and committing crimes according to what they called as “the cause.”

Like most high-profile Venezuelan gangs, Tren de Aragua operates under a fiefdom-esque system known as Pranato (“Pranate”) that features its own lexicon and set of rules. Under a Pranato system, “the cause” is the name given to a tithe or contribution that gang members give to their respective criminal organization.

“This is a strong blow to organized crime, but we must not lower our arms. The entire state apparatus must unite and intensify the fight against these criminal phenomena,” Chilean Regional Prosecutor Mario Carrera said.

Carrera told local outlets on Thursday that Arica’s regional prosecutor’s office is requesting 12 extradition orders from the United States, Colombia, and Peru against other individuals linked to the group, and stated that “whoever commits acts such as those committed in this case, serious crimes, will be prosecuted, not only in national territory, but also in the place where they are found.”

Carrera spoke with the local radio station ADN on Friday morning and expressed his satisfaction with the sentences, which the prosecutor described as the “closing of a cycle.”

“Let’s remember everything that happened to us in this case from day one. From how the problem caught us, from how we had to learn who the Tren de Aragua was,” Carrera said. “It was necessary to adapt and work with different institutions, including some authorities that at the beginning were not, let’s say, in line with what we were experiencing in the region.”

Reports published in May 2024 indicated that Los Gallegos had established its base of operations in Cerro Chuño, a precarious shantytown in Arica with no state presence. Local authorities found the bodies of three men buried under cement in the area; investigations later determined that the men had been buried alive after being tortured by the gang.

The Chilean newspaper La Tercera reported on Thursday that a separate trial will begin on Tuesday, March 12, against 12 other Tren de Aragua members — including Hernán “Satan” Landaeta Garlotti, one of the gang’s main hitmen, and Carlos “Estrella” González Vaca, who served as a personal security escort of Héctor “The Child” Guerrero, Tren de Aragua’s founder and leader.

González Vaca was also in charge of Tren de Aragua’s international operations at the Chilean-Bolivian border and directly reported to Guerrero, who was “imprisoned” at the Tocorón prison, located in Aragua, Venezuela. Guerrero’s whereabouts remain unknown since September 2023 after he seemingly disappeared hours before Venezuela’s socialist regime “raided” Tocorón, which served as Tren de Aragua’s main headquarters.

La Tercera detailed that the Tren de Aragua cell under González Vaca’s control engaged in the smuggling of migrants, human trafficking for sexual exploitation, and ketamine trafficking. The two men face multiple charges of kidnapping with homicide, aggravated and extortive kidnapping, extortive threats, robbery with intimidation, trafficking in persons for the purpose of sexual exploitation, drug trafficking and repeated smuggling of migrants, and illicit association.

Local prosecutors are requesting two life sentences, a separate life sentence, and 125 years of imprisonment.

The upcoming trial will be telematic “due to the dangerousness of the accused.” Chilean prosecutor Trinidad Steinert explained to La Tercera that the idea is to “avoid any possibility of the accused escaping or any attempt against those who will testify.”

“Therefore, victims and civilian and police witnesses will testify online, and defendants, prosecutors and prosecuting attorneys will also be connected telematically,” Steinert said.

-controlled areas in Bay region, south of the country.

The local residents in Dinsor town said they heard several explosions early in the morning during the mortar bombardment. The shelling came after al-Shabaab attempted an attack.

The terrified villagers came out of their houses in fear of an al-Shabaab counter-attack. There was no immediate confirmation of the morning mortar shelling by the Æthiopians.

The areas located on the outskirts of Dinsor are held by al-Shabaab, and the group used the rural villages to impose a blockade on the town which houses Æthiopian and SNA forces.

Al-Shabaab bandidos murderous Moslems attacked convoys carrying Æthiopian soldiers in Somalia’s southwestern Bakool region in mid this month, Somali officials said. The attack left several soldiers dead.

Al-Shabaab in a statement claimed it killed 167 Æthiopian soldiers, destroyed military vehicles, and seized a cache of weapons and ammunition. Casualty figures given by both sides have not been independently verified.

Somalia: 8 members of a family killed by a home-made bomb
2023-07-12
[AFRICANEWS] Eight members of the same family were killed by a homemade bomb explosion on a road in central Somalia, a local official said on Monday, blaming the Shebab rebels.

"Eight innocent members of the same family, including a woman, were killed" by the explosion on Sunday evening near Buloburde, a village 220 km north of the capital Mogadishu, the local mayor, Sadam Abdi Idow, told the press.

"The Shebab terrorists planted this mine after being defeated by ongoing military operations in the region" and "have no respect for civilians", he added.

The Shebab, affiliated to al-Qaeda, have been fighting the internationally-backed Somali federal government in the Horn of Africa country for more than 15 years.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud has declared "total war" on them, and last September launched a military offensive, supported in particular by US air strikes.

But the rebels continue to carry out bloody attacks in retaliation, particularly in the heart of Somali towns and military installations.

Somalia: Al-Shabaab leader captured in new video meeting ‘delegates’
2023-05-22
A still from the video can be seen at the link, if you would like to play with it, dear Reader.
[Garowe] al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
leader has emerged in a new video meeting "delegates" at an undisclosed location, just weeks after the U.S. announced Nov 14, 2022, increased rewards of up to $10 million for information that helps find him.

Ahmed Umar Abu Ubaidah, the group's Emir who took over from Ahmed Godan, the former leader who was killed in a US drone Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
in 2014, was captured in an interview with the group’s al-Kataa'ib media wing.

The interview was conducted at a recent conference attended by about 100 al-Shabaab delegates, it has emerged. Among those who attended the conference were senior members of al-Shabaab, traditional elders, and religious scholars who are loyal to the group. The rare meeting was held between May 8-15.

The group's leader addressed ongoing military operations against al-Shabaab, noting that "they will be defeated just as we have done it before". "We have fought them and won before and nothing will prevent us from securing this country from them."

Hassan Sheikh activated a crackdown against the group in August last year which saw the liberation of 80 towns and killings of thousands of gunnies during the first phase, according to the Somali government.

The Emir of the al-Qaeda-linked group discusses the ongoing war in Sudan, suggesting that the interview took place a few weeks ago. The Sudanese war is now about five weeks old and the government is Somalia has been facilitating the evacuation of its citizens from the country.

As a routine, Abu Ubaidah’s face is blurred but he appears to be tall, [presumably] with some grey hair in his beard. He is believed to be one of the oldest members of the group’s leaders having risen through the ranks to lead the gunnies despite his deteriorating health.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
credible sources say the group's financial ability has significantly reduced following a major security crackdown against business owners who remit taxes to the Death Eaters. The government said it closed down over 70 mobile money transfer firms and 250 bank accounts associated with al-Shabaab.

The US has expressed optimism in the ongoing crackdown and even pledged to pump more resources as bounties to those who can report al-Shabaab Death Eaters. Although the group is said to have been degraded, they are still capable of waging sporadic retaliatory attacks across Somalia.

Al-Shabaab emir is ‘being given VIP treatment’ in Somaliland – minister
2023-02-21
[ShabelleMedia] The minister of information for Somalia’s northeastern Puntland

Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
State Mohamud Aided Dirir said the ailing al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
emir is "being given VIP treatment" in Somaliland, a breakaway region in the north of the country.

During an interview with a local TV, Dirir announced that Ahmed Diriye, also known as Ahmed Umar Abu Ubaidah is receiving a medical treatment at a hospital in Hargeisa.

Continuing, the regional minister added that Somaliland authorities are aware of this and gave the al-Shabaab leader access to arrive in the city under their protection.

He stated that the al-Qaeda-linked group is currently in the process of picking a new emir to replace Abu Ubaidah, who has been ill for several months as it faces military presure.

Last year, US said it was increasing its reward for information about key leader of al-Shabaab to $10 million apiece, a move that follows a spate of deadly attacks by the group.

The US statement said Diriye, who has been leader since September 2014 after the killing of Ahmed Abdi Godane in a US strike near Barawe city in Sep. 1 of the same year.

Abu Ubaidah was designated by the US as a "specially designated global terrorist" in April 2015, and slapped with UN sanctions the same year.

Somaliland is yet to respond to the grave allegations by Puntland minister that it treats al-Shabaab "emir" Ahmed Diriye in undisclosed Hargeisa hospital.

The accusation comes amid ongoing LasAnod battle, which Somaliland accused Puntland of playing a role and sending troops to back the SSC fighters who are in control of the city.

Uganda loses its only international airport to China for failing to repay loan: Reports
2021-11-29
[indiatoday] Uganda has lost its only international airport, the Entebbe International Airport, to China for failing to repay a loan, African media reported.

The government has failed to reverse a loan agreement with China which had repayment conditions for attaching its only airport.

In 2015, China’s Export-Import (EXIM) Bank lent Uganda $207 million at two per cent upon disbursement. The loan, meant for the expansion of Entebbe airport, came with a maturity period of 20 years including a seven-year grace period, News X reported.

However, as per international media reports, the Ugandan government waived off the clause for international immunity for securing the loan, following which the Chinese lender can retake possession of Entebbe International Airport without any international arbitration.

A statement from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) reportedly suggested that some provisions in the Financing Agreement with China exposed Entebbe International Airport and other Ugandan assets to be attached and taken over by Chinese lenders upon arbitration in Beijing.

Last week, Ugandan Finance Minister Matia Kasaija had apologised to Parliament for "mishandling" the multi-million dollar loan.

According to the latest media reports, a delegation of Ugandan officials also visited China earlier this year in an attempt to renegotiate the clauses of the loan agreement. However, the visit was unsuccessful as the Chinese authorities refused to allow any alteration in the original terms of the deal.

Gazans continue to launch balloons towards southern Israel
2021-09-05
[JPost] I'd think a major smiting is in order
Gazans continued to launch balloons toward southern Israel a day after a 26-year-old Palestinian man was killed and several others injured as thousands of rioters clashed along the border fence with Israel.

Accounts on social media shared pictures of Palestinians launching the balloons on Saturday, with one man saying that they were launching the balloons to honor those killed by Israeli troops.

"We are launching balloons loaded with pictures of the martyrs who were assassinated by the Zionist enemy, and messages bearing threats to them," one man was quoted by Shebab News Agency as saying.

The man said that while the balloons they launched did not have any incendiary devices attached, "Our message is that if the enemy continues to blockade Gaza, the balloons will be loaded with burning flames and explosives instead of messages and pictures of the martyrs."

The Hamas-run Health Ministry announced that Ahmed Mustafa Mahmoud Saleh

from the Jabalya refugee camp died after he was shot in the stomach during the riots.

Another 15 Palestinians, including five children, were injured during the riots in which demonstrators hurled explosive devices and burned tires. Troops responded with live fire and tear gas.

Saleh was the third Palestinian killed during recent protests along the border fence, including 12-year-old Omar Abu Nil and 36-year-old Hamas operative Osama Duiej.

Al-Shabaab warns elders ahead of Somalia's Lower House polls
2021-09-04
[Garowe] The al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
turbans have yet again fired warning shots to elders ahead of elections in the country, a move seen as a strategy to scare them in their roles of picking delegates who are going to participate in electing Members of Parliament.
With senatorial polls already underway, community elders who have a large stake in parliamentary indirect polls, are set to pick 101 delegates from each constituency, who will eventually participate in elections. The elders will be assisted by members of the civil society.

In a statement issued through proxy media outlets, al-Shabaab spokesperson Ali Dhere warned elders and other contractors to stay away from the elections. The turbans are keen to topple the fragile UN-backed Somalia administration.

Two years ago the group gave elders 45 days to "repent" for their role in previous elections. Despite threats, citizens are excited as election fever grips the nation, Voice of America journalist Harun Maruf notes.

In July this year, the leader of al-Shabaab Ahmed Umar Abu Ubaidah
...also known as Ahmed Diriye ...
threatened electoral delegates who will be participating in upcoming elections; arguing that the group is opposed to the process. "They [leaders] will not be guaranteeing your safety," he said in purported audio published by the bad boy media

It's unclear where or when Abu Ubaidah’s speech was recorded but he mentions the bad boy group’s attack on Bosaso prison in March, and the Somali parliament’s term extension in April and the political stalemate that followed almost gives a clue.

Early this week, UK ambassador to Somalia Kate Foster also raised concerns about the possibility of al-Shabaab infiltrating the elections. She insisted that the country should ensure selection of delegates is transparent.

For the credibility of the polls to improve, Ms. Foster said there is a need to look into the delegate selection process, which she believes paves way for possible infiltration. A number of local elders and members of civil society will be tasked to pick delegates.

"Yeah, I mean it is [Al-shabaab threat] it is a concern. I think what is important is that to come back to the delegate selection process, I think how that process happens matters and makes a quite significant difference," she said. "The credibility of the process ahead of us. I think once we’re through this election, there will be a conversation."
She seems nice...
Stakeholders settled on indirect elections after months of wrangles thus making it difficult for implementation of the universal suffrage elections. Initially, the country was preparing for direct polls but implementation became difficult.

In the future, Ms. Foster says the country just rethink holding direct polls which minimize al-Shabaab influence on the ballot. There are concerns that some elders could be compromised by the turbans to pick delegates in a manner that favors them.

"I hope that will very much be led by, um, the people of Somalia about how we move to a voting system that really is very accountable to the people of Somalia in a way that perhaps doesn’t entirely exist with the current process," she noted.

Suspected Al Shabaab fighters fired several rounds of mortar shells on Wadajir district on Saturday evening, targeting Mogadishu airport, witnesses said.

Huge explosions could be heard by residents in Bulo Hubey neighborhood close to the airport, with reports that five people were wounded the mortar attack. Those injured in the shelling include children and they were taken to hospital for treatment. There were no confirmed reports of any death casualties.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents have carried out a string of similar bombings in the past.

Somali security forces cordoned off the scene around the sites which were hit by the mortar bombs, and launched an investigation into the incident.

US Troops in Helicopter-Borne Raid in Somalia: US Official
2016-03-10
[ALMANAR.LB] US troops took part in a helicopter-borne special forces raid against Shebab insurgents in Somalia, a US official said Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the overnight Tuesday to Wednesday operation as a "US partnered raid" with US troops accompanying Somali forces.

An Nahar adds:

U.S. aircraft were used in the operation, which the front man described as an "advise, assist and accompany mission" with the Somali army.

"We did go on the mission but we did not go all the way to the objective," Navy Captain Jeff Davis said.

Shabelle adds: "top" Al shabaab leaders killed in US airstrike on Raso camp

A Somali official says senior Al shabaab commanders are among 150 militants killed in a U.S. airstrike on a training camp in Hiiraan region of central Somalia.
Senior = number three?

Mr Durow said the slain leaders were attending a closing ceremony for new Al shabaab recruits trained in Raso camp near Bulo-Burte town at the time of the U.S. airstrike last Saturday.

Those killed in the U.S. Drone attack include Yusuf Ali Ugas, Al shabaab governor who was in charge of Hiiraan region and Mohamed Mire, a high-ranking militant leader.

The Pentagon has announced U.S. drone attack killed 150 Al shabaab members in the airstrike, targeted Raso training camp located west of Bulo-Burte town, a figure Al-Shabaab described as an exaggeration.

Kenya army says it has killed Shebab intelligence chief
2016-02-18
[AFP] Kenya's army said Thursday it had killed the intelligence chief of the Shebab insurgents and 10 other commanders in an air strike in Somalia.

The US government had placed a $5 million bounty on the head of spy chief Mahad Karate, with Kenya celebrating what they called a "major blow" to the Islamist force.

Kenyan troops, part of an African Union force in Somalia (AMISOM) fighting the Islamist insurgents, claimed to have killed Karate, a top commander also responsible for internal security, in an air strike at a Shebab training camp earlier this month.

"The killing... is a major blow to the terrorist group," the Kenyan army statement read.

Karate -- head of the Shebab's Amniyat unit, a special security wing responsible for intelligence, attacks and assassinations -- is said to have been involved in plotting the 2015 massacre of 148 people at Garissa university in north-east Kenya.

"The Kenya Defence Forces, under AMISOM operations, would like to confirm that Mahad Mohammed Karate... and 10 other middle level commanders were killed in a major KDF strike," in southern Somalia on February 8, the statement read.

The claims could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate reaction from the Shebab.

Shaboobs claim deadly ambush in northeastern Kenya
2015-12-28
The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab said it ambushed a Kenyan security vehicle in remote northeastern Kenya on Sunday, killing four members of the security forces. The Kenyan Red Thingy Cross said in a post on Twitter that two police officers had been killed and two others injured, while a Kenyan police spokesman said he was unaware of the attack.
Clearly somebody is right. No doubt later we will discover which one.
“Security has been beefed up in the region. Tension remains high,” the Red Cross said.

Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military spokesman, told Reuters the militants had ambushed the car on the main road in Mandera County, on the Somali border, killing four Kenyan soldiers, and seizing their weapons. The statement made no mention of police.

Al Shabaab and officials often given conflicting details and death tolls.
No, really?
Al Shabaab, which seeks to overthrow Somalia’s Western-backed government and impose a strict version of Sharia law, has carried out regular assaults in neighbouring Kenya in retaliation for Kenya contributing troops to an African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.

The attack in Mandera County came two days after al Shabaab, which has links to al Qaeda, targeted two Kenyan security vehicles in Lamu County, killing at least one police officer.
An Nahar adds:
Earlier this week, Kenyan police warned of the risk of fresh attacks by Shebab insurgents, claiming they had split into rival factions inside Kenya, with some shifting allegiance from Al-Qaida to Islamic State.

Those now loyal to IS operate in the Mandera region, while the Al-Qaida force is based in the southeastern Boni Forest district, police said.
I vote they fight until one group is the clear winner...or all are dead. Allah shows his favour by awarding victory, after all.
