Rising Islamic fundamentalism in Pakistan |
2023-01-29 |
[OneIndia] Another worrying aspect of the terrorist nexus in Pakistan is the emergence of the Punjabi Taliban, a loose terror network that has spread all over Pakistan. This group is not only in cahoots with the Pakistani Taliban but they also have suspected links with al-Qaeda. Several sections can be read at the link covering the growth of Islamism in Pakistan from independence in 1947, PM Bhutto, the military coup of General Zia ul-Haz, Afghan refugees during the Afghanistans’s Marxist/Soviet period. Jumping back in: RISE & RISE OF TALIBANFor years, the Afghan Taliban ...Arabic for students... were considered an 'asset' in Pakistain's establishment circles. They were trained and funded by the State so that Pakistain would not have an 'enemy' to deal with Western border. A nexus between the local Taliban and their counterparts in Afghanistan has by now become obvious. After the US invasion of Afghanistan and the overthrow of the Taliban, the Northern Alliance came to power. Musharraf adopted a dual policy when it came to handing over |

[DAWN] URDU is a marvellous language for vaulting flights of fancy. So when Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... promised an accounting for every drop of innocent blood spilled by jihadi terrorists, we almost believed him. Almost, but not quite. Rewind to a couple of years ago, before the massacre of schoolchildren at the Army Public School in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. , and we see a Nawaz Sharif in full foot-dragging mode. Restraining a military that was champing at the bit, he dragged out a doomed negotiation process that went nowhere. Its only function was to give the Taliban time to regroup. And in his recent speech following the Lahore bloodbath, our prime minister seemed more sad than angry. In fact, he came across as a headmaster disappointed by a promising student. At times, he appeared to be delivering a lecture on Islamiat rather than issuing a rousing call to arms. Not a word about the army action that was in full swing in Punjab 1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard 2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers 3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots.... even as he spoke to the nation. Indeed, there was nothing specific about what precisely his government was going to do in response to the atrocity. In short, he delivered the kind of vague, woolly speech he has been giving for much of his political career. Actually, we could have done with a progress report on the National Action Plan to combat terrorism hammered out with a wide consensus after the December 2014 terror attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar. This plan called for the government to undertake a number of measures ranging from madressah reforms to cleansing our curricula of all their Lion of Islam content. Needless to say, little action has been taken on most of the agreed items. The only institution that has made significant progress has been the military, although at the cost of many lives. And it has been Nawaz Sharif who, together with his brother Shahbaz, has blocked robust action against the Punjabi Taliban holed out in southern Punjab. The reason for this reluctance is obvious: thus far, a policy of live and let live has governed the provincial and central governments’ attitude towards the Punjabi Taliban. But if you keep vipers as pets in your garden, don’t be surprised when they bite you. Even after the Lahore carnage, Rana Sanaullah, a senior figure in the Punjab government, declared that there were no Taliban hideouts in his province. This flies in the face of intelligence reports and investigative stories filed by journalists. We remember all too well the sight of Sanaullah accompanying an Lion of Islam candidate on his election campaign a few years ago. The point here is that until we can clearly identify the enemy, and go after him, his sense of immunity will only embolden him further. And as so many people have been saying here and in other media outlets, we need to drain the swamp of its poison if we are to destroy the nasty creatures infesting its depths. This means a root-and-branch change in school and college curricula, and a clampdown on hate speech in mosques and TV chat shows. The financing of madressahs and so-called Islamic charities needs to be scrutinised, and the hate-filled ideology taught in most of our seminaries has to be removed. This is a pretty tall order. Even Musharraf at the height of his considerable power flinched from taking on our holy mans and our religious parties. But as Ayaz Amir reminded us in a recent column in The News, Benazir Bhutto ... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in... showed more spine than her male successors when she authorised Gen Babar to crack down on the MQM terror machine in the mid-1990s. This was when dozens of tortured bodies were found in sacks, and the increasingly roundedAltaf Hussain ..The head of MQM in Pakistain, who has lived in London and hasn't laid eyes on Pakistain since Caesar made corporal. Judging from the size of him,he may be a Hutt... ’s hit-men held the city in an iron grip. Those of us who lived in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... then recall those dark days with a shudder. The operation took a lot of political will, especially when the military establishment was hostile towards the PPP government at the time. This only shows that what is lacking in Nawaz Sharif’s approach is conviction. He genuinely believes that the Taliban will leave Punjab alone provided they are allowed to carry out their activities without interference. But as we have seen in the Islamabad and Karachi dharnas, give our holy mans and their followers an inch and they’ll take a mile. In both pro-Qadri protests, these faceless myrmidons sought to provoke the authorities into violent reaction, thereby causing casualties that would further inflame the mobs. But by adopting this softly-softly approach, the federal, Sindh and Punjab governments have signalled a weakness that will be exploited in the future. This style of sit-in politics was pioneered by Imran Khan ![]() ... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the brightest knife in the national drawer... and Tahirul Qadri ...Pak politician, and would-be dictator, founder and head of Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran and Pakistain Awami Tehrik. He usually resides in Canada, but returns to Pakistain periodically to foam at the mouth and lead demonstrations. Depending on which way the wind's blowing, Qadri claims to be the author of Pak's blasphemy law. Other times he says it wasn't him... when they dragged out their protests before parliament for weeks. Despite the destruction of public property, the government showed great restraint, setting the stage for the recent round of dharnas. Perhaps Nawaz Sharif should just abdicate the fight against terror to the army chief. |

Death sentences for TTP men behind 2010 Ahmadi attack |
2015-01-18 |
[DAWN] LAHORE: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday sentenced to death two Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) men, Moavia and Abdullah, for the deadly attack on an Ahmadi place of worship in 2010. On May 28, 2010, gunnies attacked two Ahmadiyya places of worship in the city of Lahore with guns, grenades, and suicide bombs, killing 94 people and wounding well over 100. The Punjabi Taliban, a local affiliate of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (the Pak Taliban or TTP), grabbed credit. Two men were captured during the attack, but the government was heavily criticised by rights groups for failing to make progress on their trial, seeking repeated adjournments from the court as has the defense. Read: Footprints: No space for Ahmadis Today, the ATC sentenced Abdullah was sentenced to death on nine counts, whereas Moavia was given the death penalty on seven counts. Both are also handed a fine of Rs3.3 million. The ATC hearing took place at Kot Lakhpat Jail where the convicts were held. The single-bench court has also sentenced the accused to serve jail-time of seven years. The attack was carried out in Lahores Model Town and Garhi Shahu localities simultaneously. Shahbaz Bhatti murder case moved to military court |
2015-01-16 |
[DAWN] The Islamabad police moved the murder case of Pakistain's former minority affairs minister Shahbaz Bhatti to a military court on Thursday. Bhatti, a Catholic who vocally opposed the blasphemy law, had been bumped off outside his residence in Islamabad in March 2011. His killing had followed after the high-profile murder of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, who had also been killed for demanding the blasphemy law be reformed. In the past, the All Pakistain Minorities Alliance (APMA) had pointed out that Death Eater threats had hampered the Bhatti murder trial. Four Taliban fighters whacked near Muzaffargarh
2014-12-14 | |
MULTAN: Police foiled a major terror attack Saturday in central Punjab province killing at least four suspected Taliban militants, officials said. Heavy weapons and explosives, including four suicide jackets, 12 rockets, 40 hand grenades, 328 kilogrammes of gun-powder, were recovered from the militants after a gun battle in the southern Muzaffargarh district, some 350 kilometres from provincial capital Lahore. "We received information from intelligence officials about the movement of militants in the area. The gunfight started when police signalled a car to stop for checks and militants fired at the cops," Rai Zamir-ul-Haq, police chief in the district, told AFP. "In the exchange of fire, we killed four militants. Two police officials were also injured by two grenades hurled at them by the militants," he said.
"By seizing such large quantity of weapons and explosives and killing these militants, we have foiled a major attempt of terror in the region. There were confirmed intelligence reports that the militants were planning major terrorist attacks in Multan and Muzaffargarh cities," Haq said. The authorities suspect that the militants are linked to the Punjabi Taliban faction of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant outfit which has waged a long-term insurgency in the country and has killed thousands of people in suicide, bomb and gun attacks. "The killed militants belonged to banned Punjabi Taliban's Abu-Ubaida group and we had received confirmed intelligence reports about their planned activities," Haq said. Nabila Ghazanfar, a police spokeswoman in Lahore, confirmed the killings and said that the cops had cordoned off the area to search any other militants in the region. Another senior police official in the territory, Rehmatullah Niazi said that the bodies of the militants were being identified. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif appreciated the police personnel for their bravery and valiant efforts, in a statement issued.

Anti-terror operations to continue, says army |
2014-09-17 |
[DAWN] The army said on Monday that counter-terrorism operations would continue till elimination of terrorism. "The capacity of the Talibs to plan and execute terrorist activity has been disrupted," Military front man Maj Gen Asim Bajwa said while talking to Dawn. The front man was discussing the progress achieved in Operation Zarb-e-Azb ..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)... in North ![]() He said the operation was "proceeding as per plan and desired targets were being achieved". But he avoided quantifying the progress achieved. The army claims to have cleared over 80 km of main road in North Waziristan and its three major population centres -- Mirali, Miranshah ... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministatein centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas... and Dattakhel. But importantly the much feared blowback of the military operation in the once Taliban stronghold has been avoided. Except for a couple of attacks on military installations and a few other minor strikes, holy warriors have not been able to carry out any major act of violence. Gen Bajwa said the holy warriors were on the run now and they were carrying out sporadic attacks. "They have been dislodged from their base, their command and control centre and logistic base has been destroyed, and their communication network has been smashed," he said. Gen Bajwa avoided a direct comment on renunciation of violence by Punjabi Taliban led by Asmatullah Moavia, but there is a perception within the military that it was a result of the pressure generated by Zarb-e-Azb. He regretted that Afghanistan was not extending commensurate cooperation. "We have through military and diplomatic channels been asking Afghan authorities for cooperation, but they have not been forthcoming," he said. The military claims to have eliminated over 1,000 TTP soldiers, including the second tier of the murderous Moslem leadership, but says the main leaders including the group's chief Maulvi Fazlullah were based in Afghanistan. The military front man specifically underscored the success of over 2,200 operations across the country that had been undertaken as part of the newly-instituted 'Integrated Security Mechanism'. |

Dangerous possibilities |

Punjabi Taliban to Increase Insurgency in Afghanistan |
2014-09-15 |
[Tolo News] The Punjabi Taliban in Pakistain has said that the group will shift its focus to Afghanistan and fight the enemies of Islam on Afghan soil. Punjabi Taliban Chief Ismatullah Muawiya announced that the group would no longer carry out Lion of Islam activities on Pakistain's soil, instead will guide the focuses of all Pak and Afghan Taliban on Afghanistan. "After talking to the tribal elders, we have decided to focus on the enemies of Islam in Afghanistan," Muawiya asserted. "From now on, the Punjabi Taliban will focus their attacks on Afghanistan." In response to the assertions of the Punjabi Taliban, officials of the Afghan Ministry of Defense (MoD) have warned that any attacks on Afghanistan would face harsh response from the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF). "We have a death message for those who want to attack Afghanistan," MoD front man Gen. Zahir Azimi said. "Afghanistan would be a cemetery for those who want to attack it." Afghan MPs have asserted that the proclamations made by Punjabi Taliban's are another plan of Pakistain's Inter-service Intelligence Services (ISI). "This is another ISI stunt," MP Rehana Azad said. "Pakistain has never wanted stability in Afghanistan." The Punjabi Taliban are mostly active in the Punjab regions of Pakistain, but have been accused of multiple attacks on Afghanistan also. The group does not have any links with the Pak Taliban. |

[Telegraph] Leader of the Punjabi Taliban, one of Pakistain's most effective terror groups, says it is to end its insurgency and embrace charity work One of Pakistain's most deadly Taliban groups has abandoned its armed struggle and announced it will focus on a peaceful campaign calling on the country to adopt Islamic sharia law. The Punjabi Taliban is believed to have carried out a number of significant terrorist attacks, including the 2009 assault on the Pakistain army's general headquarters in Rawalpindi, in which nine soldiers were killed; the commando raid on the Sri Lankan cricket team in the same year, and the 2011 attack on the naval airbase at Mehran in which 18 servicemen and two US-donated aircraft were destroyed. It has also been blamed for a number of sectarian atrocities, including attacks on the country's Ahmadi Moslems and the liquidation of Pakistain's Christian minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti in 2011. The announcement is seen as a further setback for Pakistain's alliance of 'Taliban' terrorist groups, which has suffered a number of fractures in recent weeks. The Tehrik e Taliban Pakistain umbrella group broke into three factions earlier this month after a group of commanders, mainly Mehsud and Wazir rustics from North Wazoo, announced they had broken away to form their own group. Observers said they were divided over the Pakistain army's offensive in the tribal areas which has driven thousands of people from their homes and fuelled dissent over whether the gunnies should fight their own country's army. There is also opposition to the umbrella group's leader, Mullah Fazlullah ![]() Mullah FM, Fazlullah had the habit of grabbing his FM mike when the mood struck him and bellowing forth sermons. Sufi suckered the Pak govt into imposing Shariah on the Swat Valley and then stepped aside whilst Fazlullah and his Talibs imposed a reign of terror on the populace like they hadn't seen before, at least not for a thousand years or so. For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan... , who is based in Kunar province ... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country..... in Afghanistan and regarded as an outsider by Wazir and Mehsud rustics. The rift has been credited with yielding intelligence which led to the arrest of a gang of turbans Pakistain's security forces believe carried out the failed liquidation attempt on Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old schoolgirl who defied the Taliban's ban on female education. The Punjabi Taliban's existence and the success of its terrorist operations has been a long-standing challenge to government attempts to portray its insurgency as one led by distant gunnies from the country's unruly tribal frontier rather than strongly rooted in Pakistain's heartland. Its announcement that it was abandoning its "armed struggle" was made with a declaration of its patriotism and desire to defend Pakistain from "outside threats". Punjabi Taliban chief Ismatullah Muawiya said that after consulting other Moslem leaders, the organization would now limit its use of force to "infidel forces" and would focus on promoting sharia law. In a video message, Muawiya said the Punjabi Taliban would continue to operate in Afghanistan but would focus on "Dawat Tablig" preaching and called on other Taliban factions to abandon their insurgencies in Pakistain. He called on the Pakistain government to compensate those affected by its offensive in Waziristan and other tribal agencies and to rehabilitate them with "honour and dignity". "Peace is the need of the hour to foil conspiracies against Pakistain and its people," he said. The announcement was welcomed by military sources in Pakistain who said it was a significant development involving a group which had inflicted heavy casualties on the army. Questions remained, however, about the group's intentions in Afghanistan. "This is a very important group which had been committed to attacks and terrorism, they have been very effective in the past. This [announcement] will demoralise the others. It shows the military operation in North Waziristan is having an effect. It would be very unfortunate though if Pakistain allows them to go to Afghanistan -- we have to make sure they don't use their energies in Afghanistan", said retired Lieutenant-General Talat Masood, a leading strategic analyst. |

[DAWN] AL QAEDA chief Ayman al-![]() ... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit.Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is... 's declaration that the global terrorist group has established its subcontinental branch is the realisation of the Islamist Death Eaters' long-standing dream. On the other hand, the formation of Al Qaeda in South Asia is also reflective of other developments taking place among Death Eater circles, particularly with regard to ongoing internal rifts and confrontations. Islamist Death Eater organizations across the world are undergoing a transformation, which can cause changes in their chemistry and lead to the emergence of a new Death Eater character. Militants in Pakistain and Afghanistan are also passing through a similar phase, leading to new formations among them. At present, Al Qaeda faces some critical challenges to its survival. The Islamic State (IS), previously the Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), has exposed Al Qaeda's political and operational vulnerabilities which may hurt the latter's ideological appeal to its affiliates. The IS has come up with a new approach and model for building an Islamic state. The central and other chapters of Al Qaeda have not been able thus far to capture and hold a territory for the same purpose. Their previous attempts at gaining territorial control only achieved partial and short-lived success as in 2011 and 2012 when Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and a coalition of North African turbans succeeded in capturing some territories for a short time. The Al Qaeda strategy to support local Death Eater organizations for bringing about change has failed and in some cases proved counterproductive. Al Qaeda-affiliated local Death Eater groups are only able to create some turmoil in their respective regions. Even if a local group succeeds in capturing territory it finds it difficult to hold on to it. Also, it is relatively easy for counterfaceless myrmidons to challenge a local, isolated group both operationally and ideologically. However, a lie repeated often enough remains a lie... the IS is inviting Al Qaeda affiliates to become part of a central command which can help them consolidate their gains in their respective regions. Of course, this will make it more difficult for counterfaceless myrmidons to tackle murderous Moslems using conventional frameworks. For instance, if murderous Moslems launch a massive campaign on both sides of the Afghan-Pakistain border, it will become very difficult for the security forces of the two countries to counter them without evolving joint operational strategies. The emergence of the IS in the Syrian and Iraqi border regions can provide some insights. It is clear that the IS call for allegiance is addressed to all Moslems and holds attraction and appeal for Islamist turbans and radical individuals and groups. It appears as if Al Qaeda is trying to respond by using its contacts and links with its affiliates and with groups inspired by its ideology. At the same time, it is trying to reach out to those regions and conflict zones where it can extend its influence by appealing to the 'oppressed' Moslem communities. South Asia, a region that is inhabited by 40pc of the global Moslem population, has attraction for both Al Qaeda and the IS. Al Qaeda sees an opportunity in India-held Kashmire, where a separatist, religio-nationalist movement has been crushed and the religio-nationalist jihadist appeal of Death Eater groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba ...the Army of the Pure,an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI... , Hizbul Mujahideen, and Jaish-e-Mohammad ...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf bannedthe group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat... has lost its lustre. Al Qaeda is calling radical elements towards 'pure' jihad, which it believes cannot be confined within the boundaries of nationalism or of a state. The IS, too, is emerging as an inspirational force for radical Moslem populations in India and India-held Kashmire. Though it remains to be seen what impact these two global jihadist groups have there, they will certainly add to the troubles of Moslem communities. Interestingly, Zawahiri has renewed his pledge of allegiance to Mullah Omar ... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality... which indicates that Al Qaeda has challenged the caliphate of His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us... . It indicates that Al Qaeda will firmly stand beside its old allies, which will not only increase the operational strength of the Afghan Taliban but also prevent the latter's erosion due to the IS effect. The Jamaatul Ahrar ...a splinter group of the Pak Taliban led by Maulana Qasim Khurasani. The group has pledged allegiance to Mullah Omar and has agreed to follow his ideology, such as it is. It's probably the latest incarnation of the splinter group Ahrarul Hind since Khurasani used to head that group... , newly established by some breakaway factions of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain, is ideologically and politically more ambitious than the TTP and largely inspired by the successes of the IS. Even if it completely breaks its links with the TTP and Al Qaeda, the JA will remain ideologically and politically strong. As far as operational capabilities are concerned, the new group has a strong nexus with sectarian terrorist networks and factions of the Punjabi Taliban and the various Jundallah groups in mainland Pakistain. The phenomenon of Jundallah is important in this perspective. Many groups are operating with the name of Jundallah in Pakistain, similar to Punjabi Taliban groups. While the Punjabi Taliban emerged from the Deobandi and Salafi Death Eater groups, Jundallah groups are breakaway factions of the Jamaat-e-Islami ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... (JI) and its subsidiary student and Death Eater wings. With the exception of the Jundallah in Iranian Balochistan ![]() ...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it... , the remaining identically named groups, active in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... and Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. valley, are of a similar nature. With their Islamist background, they are naturally inclined towards the IS, and like a few commanders of the Hizb-e-Islami -- a JI affiliate in Afghanistan -- apparently intend to announce their allegiance to the IS. Seen from this perspective, the JA is likely to have a close operational alliance with Jundallah groups inside Pakistain. Conversely, the TTP's operational concentration will increase inside Afghanistan. It appears as if a new formation or alliance of Al Qaeda, the Afghan Taliban, TTP, the local Taliban led by Gul Bahadur and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan will emerge which will be challenged by an alliance of JA and its Pak affiliates, and breakaway factions of the Afghan Taliban and Hizb-e-Islami. The Haqqanis have not yet indicated which side they will join. Maybe they believe they can play with and manoeuvre both pro- and anti-Pakistain groups. But it will not be possible for them to continue this approach for long because ideological alignments among turbans are becoming clearer and eventually they will have to decide which way to go. |
