'We aim to form a government through free and fair elections' |
2024-09-02 |
[DHAKATRIBUNE] Ruhul Kabir Rizvi continues to be a prominent leader within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), serving as the Senior Joint Secretary General since his election at the party's sixth conference on March 19, 2016. Rizvi, originally from Kurigram district, is recognized for his academic accomplishments, holding a Master's degree in both Geography and History, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Law from Rajshahi University. Rizvi's entry into politics began in student activism with the Left-wing Revolutionary Students' Union. Following the formation of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal ...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)... (JCD), the student wing of BNP, he became actively involved, initially serving as the publicity secretary for the Rajshahi University unit. His leadership capabilities were soon recognized, and he rose to become the president of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. Additionally, Rizvi was elected Vice-President (VP) of the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (Rucsu) in the 1989 elections. His extensive experience in both student politics and the broader national political arena has provided him with a nuanced understanding of Bangladesh's political dynamics. As a seasoned spokesperson, Rizvi plays a crucial role in articulating BNP's positions on various issues, particularly emphasizing the party's commitment to democratic governance and national development. Rizvi recently spoke with Dhaka Tribune's Siam Sarower Jamil to discuss the current political situation in Bangladesh, the legitimacy of the interim government, and the BNP's stance on various national issues. LEGITIMACY OF THE GOVERNMENT When questioned about the legitimacy of the interim government, Rizvi acknowledged that while some view the government's rise to power as unconventional, it is essential to understand that the government operates with the people's support. He said: ''The constitution exists for the people, and what matters is that the government has the people's support. This government took power in a unique situation, backed by the people's mandate.'' Rizvi also accused deposed prime minister ...Bangla dynastic politician and now exiled former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She was President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia showed such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums. That is probably because Khaleda's late husband was the Pak tool who had Mujib assassinated... of manipulating the constitution to establish an authoritarian regime, which he believes has been overcome. DURATION OF THE GOVERNMENT Regarding the duration of the interim government's tenure, Rizvi emphasized that it should remain in power only as long as necessary to ensure a stable transition. He said: ''They will remain in power as long as necessary. The government should initiate reforms as soon as possible, focusing on laying the groundwork for a literate and articulate state. We're willing to give them the time they need, but it shouldn't be prolonged unnecessarily.'' RELATIONS WITH JAMAAT Despite differing views on the current interim government, Rizvi dismissed any notion of conflict between BNP and its longtime political ally, Jamaat-e-Islami ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... ''BNP has a broader role in this country's politics. We aim to form a new government through free and fair elections. There's no conflict between us,'' he said. Regarding student movements forming a political party, Rizvi expressed support for a democratic state where all voices could be heard. CONCERNS OVER SECURITY When asked about the release of some murderous Moslem leaders and the potential threat to law and order, Rizvi refrained from commenting, saying that these were matters for the legal process and the courts. He also addressed allegations of BNP leaders and activists being involved in criminal activities following Sheikh Hasina's fall, saying that the party is committed to maintaining discipline and has taken actions against any misconduct. ANTI-INDIA SENTIMENT Rizvi clarified BNP's stance on relations with India, denying accusations of anti-India sentiments. ''There's no such thing as being anti-India or pro-India. We protest actions that are against the state. India is our big neighbor, but people are angry for various reasons,'' he explained, pointing out issues like the release of floodwaters affecting Bangladesh. He also said that BNP has no foreign masters, only friends, and is open to constructive relationships with any country that respects Bangladesh's illusory sovereignty. PROTECTING MINORITY COMMUNITIES Responding to concerns about attacks on minority communities after Sheikh Hasina's government fell, Rizvi highlighted the role BNP played in protecting minority homes and temples, asserting that the party stands with all citizens of Bangladesh. He further reassured that BNP is focused on ensuring the continuity of a democratic government and trusts that the interim government will fulfill its responsibilities in ensuring free and fair elections. |

Bangladesh’s one-sided election leaves some voters asking, ‘What’s the point?’ |
2024-01-07 |
[BenarNews] Bangladesh goes to the polls next week with Prime Minister ...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums... and her ruling Awami League all but assured victory, and with the opposition boycotting an election that analysts say is likely to cement autocratic rule. Voters in the South Asian nation of 166 million will have little choice but to elect 76-year-old Hasina for a fourth consecutive term on Jan. 7. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, along with several smaller parties, has refused to participate after Hasina rejected calls to step aside for a neutral caretaker government to oversee the polls. Without the BNP’s involvement, government critics and independent observers say the vote is shaping up as a one-sided exercise, in a nation with a long record of dubious elections. "Ultimately, these elections will enable Sheikh Hasina to have absolute power," Prof. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, a political analyst and chief of the election monitoring body Janipop, told BenarNews. "The democratic checks-and-balances and the principle of separation of power will collapse." Since 2009, Hasina has presided over one of the region’s best-performing economies, largely on the back of the country’s booming textile and garment industry, which employs more than a million women in the workforce. But she has steadily clamped down on opposition parties and civil society while consolidating control over state apparatuses — from law enforcement and the judiciary to the Election Commission, according to analysts and activists. Local and international advocacy groups, including Human Rights Watch, have documented in detail alleged abuses by Bangladesh authorities, including mass arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearance, torture, extrajudicial killings, and widespread repression. Tens of thousands of opposition leaders and activists — including its secretary general and other top leaders — have reportedly been arrested since Oct. 28 alone, when the BNP staged the last in a series of mass rallies demanding a caretaker government be put in place. Ten people died in political violence that weekend, and another 21 have died since — mostly opposition members — amid a series of transportation blockades, vehicle arsons and street festivities, according to media reports. Six of the dear departed died in police custody and jails. Members of the opposition party are facing up to four million criminal charges, according to the BNP’s estimates, with some regarded as "ghost cases," which are planted against individuals presumed dead, incarcerated, or in exile. On Thursday, a Dhaka court gave prison terms to eight BNP leaders — including two former cabinet ministers — for participating in a rally vandalizing vehicles about 10 years ago, officials and lawyers said. Authorities have resorted to arresting family members of opposition activists as well. ’ONE-PARTY SYSTEM’ The arrests and deadly protest violence have raised tensions ahead of the vote, which will be the 12th since Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistain in 1971. Out of the 11 previous general elections, only four were considered to be relatively free and fair, because they were held under non-partisan caretaker administrations — a system that the Awami League government removed in 2011. The BNP and its allies boycotted the 2014 election over concerns about its fairness. And in 2018, despite the BNP’s participation, the ruling party secured more than 95% of the parliamentary seats, although amid widespread claims of fraud. In recent months, the United States and other Western countries have ramped up calls to demand that free and fair elections be held in Bangladesh. Washington in May said it would deny visas to Bangladeshis whom it suspects of trying to undermine democratic elections. Despite the pressure, few observers expect the vote to be competitive. "The consequence is that we are going to see a one-party political system," said Prof. Nizam Uddin Ahmed, a political analyst and writer of several books on Bangladesh politics. Wary of international scrutiny, the Awami League has greenlighted the use of "dummy candidates" during the election, which refer to members of the ruling party that are registered to run as "independents." The government has also cajoled new, smaller parties into participating, amid concerns about possible low turnout. Still, the government-aligned Jatiya Party ...aka Jatiya Front; a political party established by Bangladictator Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1986 to lend a veneer of respectability to his rule. Since nobody was amused he was forced to resign by popular demand in 1990. The party remains in existence with about a dozen seats in Bangla's parliament... , the largest opposition camp in Parliament, is not expected to secure more than a dozen of the 300 parliamentary seats up for grabs, Kalimullah said. "We have a Westminster form of governance in place. But the next Parliament will be composed of MPs elected in the style of the Chinese Communist Party, which allows the party members to contest among its members," he said. |

Third Day of Clashes in Bangladash over Quran 'Desecration’ |
2021-10-16 |
![]() Police said that the street protests began after the main Friday prayers at the Baitul Mukarram mosque in the center of Dhaka. Demonstrators gathered to protest images that earlier emerged on social media of a copy of the Quran — Islam's holy book — at the feet of a statue in a Hindu temple in eastern Bangladesh. The clashes in the capital city follow reported incidents of vandalism at Hindu temples across other parts of the Muslim-majority country. The rise in communal tensions came as the minority Hindus celebrated the last day of their largest religious festival —the Durga Puja. Sajjad Hossain, a deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said several people were injured after the police charged with batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd which was attempting to break through a police barricade. "They started pelting stones at us, they attacked us," Hossain said. It was not clear immediately how many were injured in the melee, authorities said. At least three of the protesters were detained for questioning, the deputy commissioner added. Protesters chanted anti-India slogans and criticized Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whom critics accuse of being close with New Delhi. Bangladeshi authorities have ordered an investigation into the image of Islam's holy book placed in the temple, while Hasina has warned against any attempts to disturb communal harmony in the country. But Hindu organizations said the attacks continued in other parts of the country where dozens of Hindus were injured and their temple statues vandalized or toppled. Since Wednesday, at least 100 people had been arrested across the country involving alleged attacks on Hindu temples, authorities said. Around 9% of Bangladesh's more than 160 million people are Hindu. Previously reported in the regional news People Killed as Bangladesh Police, Mob Clash over Alleged Quran Desecration[BenarNews] At least four people were killed and dozens injured in southwest Bangladesh late Wednesday when law enforcement clashed with a mob protesting the alleged desecration of a Koran at a Hindu festival site, police said Thursday. The Mohammad Harun Rashid, officer-in-charge at the cop shoppe in Haziganj, a sub-district of Chandpur, confirmed the deaths but did not say whether the victims were killed by police shots. "Three of the injured who suffered bullet wounds have died at a local health facility, while another died at Cumilla Medical College Hospital where he was sent for better treatment," he told BenarNews. Cumilla Police Superintendent Faruk Ahmed confirmed that officers opened fire on the mob of several hundred people to control the situation. "Police fired aimless shots and tear gas," he told BenarNews. After the post about the Koran was widely circulated, enraged mobs attacked dozens of Hindu temples, including in Cumilla and Chandpur districts, police said. Chandpur officials banned gatherings indefinitely, Momena Akhter, the chief of the Haziganj civil administration, told BenarNews. Security was stepped around the country as well, as the violence spread. Officials deployed Border Guard Bangladesh troops in 30 of the nation’s 64 districts. "Responding to the demand of district administrators and direction from the Home Ministry, the BGB personnel have been deployed to ensure security for Durga Puja celebrations," Lt. Col. Faizur Rahman said in a press statement released Thursday. Meanwhile, ...back at the pie fight, Bella went down under the weight of the custard... after visiting the shelter from where the Koran was recovered, police detained a Moslem man named Fayez Uddin who allegedly posted the video of Islam’s holy book in the puja structure on Facebook, a Chittagong Range Police official told news hounds. "Police are interrogating the person. We suspect the incident was sabotage and we are now trying to determine why," said Md. Anwar Hossain, deputy inspector general in the Chittagong Range Police. He added that 43 people were tossed into the calaboose by police for questioning. Anwarul Azim, chief of Cumilla’s Kotwali Model Police Station, said four cases had been filed as of Thursday night, including one under the Digital Security Act. Hazigang police’s Harun Rashid said two cases accuse six named and 2,000 unnamed people of attacking the temple and clashing with police. Police and authorities said at least 31 people were arrested in Gazipur, Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar districts for their alleged involvement in violence in those places. Hindu leaders said a man guarding a puja structure in Hajiganj was found dead but they could not confirm the cause of death. Hindu leaders, meanwhile, said their community feared for its safety following the violence and attacks on Hindu temples. "Houses of Hindus came under attack in some areas," Manindra Kumar Nath of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council told BenarNews. Palash Kanti Dey, executive secretary-general of the Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajote, said vandals had hit at least 48 puja structures in 18 districts over the last two days. The Durga Puja festival began on Monday and ends Friday. Islamic political party Islami Oikya Jote ... a political party in Bangladesh. 2019-12-13 |
[Dhaka Tribune] Expressing its grievances over the Appellate Division order rejecting BNP Chairperson ![]() 's bail in Zia Charitable Trust graft case, the party has announced a countrywide demonstration program for Sunday demanding her release. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir declared the program at a presser after a meeting of the party Standing Committee members at its chairperson's Gulshan office in Dhaka on Thursday, reports UNB. "We are aggrieved and disappointed over the court order. The nation is not only got stunned, but also angry over it," he said. The BNP leader said people had an expectation that Khaleda Zia would get justice from the apex court, but unfortunately she was deprived of that. Under the circumstances, Fakhrul said: "We have taken a decision at the meeting of our Standing Committee that we will stage demonstrations and take out processions across the country on Sunday, demanding Khaleda Zia's release." In the capital, he said BNP's all thana units will hold rallies and stage demonstrations the same day to push for the same demand. He said they will also announce other programs after Sunday to mount pressure on the government to free Khaleda from jail. Fakhrul said they believe that people will wage a strong movement with their active participation to force the current "usurper" government to hold a fresh election under a neutral government annulling the results of the 11th parliamentary election. Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division rejected the bail petition of the BNP chief in the graft case. Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 8, 2018 after she was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. "I would like to say it clearly that there is no alternative to unity, no matter who thinks what... "We must achieve the victory through people's unity. This is the reality." He said the people of the country and the international community have already turned down the election. "The people witnessed a cruel mockery in the name of election. People's rights were snatched through it." He said a big damage has been done to Awami League through the election as the party has now become the opponent of people for depriving them of their voting rights. "Even, Awami League supporters are bemoaning that they could not cast their votes," The BNP secretary general said it is Awami League's inherent nature is to think that they are the owners of the country and people are their subjects. [Dhaka Tribune] Jatiya Oikya Front, a political alliance of opposition parties, has declared that their elected members of parliament will not take their oath as lawmakers. The decision was taken by Jatiya Oikya Front leaders during a meeting held at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office, in Dhaka, on Thursday. Islami Andolan musters 3rd highest votes, wins no seats |

[Dhaka Tribune] In the 11th parliamentary elections, the Islami Andolan Bangladesh ...a minor Islamist party which in the days of Bangla Bhai served as a recruiting agency for the JMB... (IAB) has bagged the third highest number of votes, following Awami League-led Grand Alliance and BNP-led Jatiya Oikya Front. Yet, the party could not manage securing a single seat in the December 30 polls. The IAB also rejected the election results, amid claims of harassment and intimidation of its polling agents and voters. According the Election Commission, 80,259,172 votes were cast, which is 77% of the country’s total number of eligible voters. Of the total votes, the Awami League received 61,703,251 votes (77%), and won 288 parliamentary seats out of 298, where results have been announced. Oikya Front, which won only seven seats, got 9,229,712 votes, while the IAB got 1,236,983, according to the Election Commission tally. Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune earlier, IAB Dhaka city south unit President Imtiaz Ahmed said winning seats is not currently the party’s goal. Instead, the IAB wishes to increase the total number of their followers. |

Oikya Front in till the end |
2018-12-27 |
[Dhaka Tribune] A level playing field is all that BNP and its electoral alliance partners asked for. With the polling date just round the corner, the alliance (Jatiya Oikya Front) leaders now consider they are not getting a fair deal as far as a congenial election environment is concerned. This raises worries in the minds of the public about a possible pull out by the Front from the race. But talking to the Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday, some of the key opposition functionaries made it clear that a poll boycott is something not in their agenda. In the same breath, they said it will largely depend on the Election Commission how things shape up in run up to the December 30 parliamentary polls but, they would remain in the poll battle till the end. Jatiya Oikya Front leaders, who have been complaining of wholesale arrests and harassments of their leaders and workers across the country and finding difficulties in carrying out election campaigns, on Wednesday sought the President’s assistance in getting rid of the current chief election commissioner (CEC) through an ’unbiased’ replacement. The development came a day after the alliance leaders had walked out of a meeting with the CEC and other Commissioners after failing to get any serious response to their allegations of law enforcers playing a partisan role. They claimed, since announcement of election schedule, as many as 43,766 BNP men were jugged Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! in numerous old cases as well as in 269 new cases. Besides, some of the opposition MP candidates also received injuries in the polls violence. The platform led by eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain is now trying hard to remain in the poll battle ignoring constant alleged attacks and harassments by law enforcers and ruling party cadres. It still hoping against hope and expecting a level playing field as the election is approaching fast. The leaders claimed that they were promised of level playing field and an end to harassment from the EC and the ruling Awami League, but the harassment continues against the opposition men, while the ruling candidates are electioneering in full swing, even with police support in many areas. Against this backdrop, top alliance leaders say they are monitoring the activities of the Election Commission to decide on whether it will continue the poll battle or not. Now, many of the alliance’s MP’s feel insecure and not being able to run their electioneering, they alleged that they are more concerned of their personal safety and pursuing poll campaigns have become secondary to them. |

Commenting on Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and Oikya Front leader Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury's remarks against incumbent army Chief of Staff Abdul Aziz on a TV talk show on October 9, Abdur Rahman said: "Everyone saw how Zafrullah made ill-motivated and false statements against the Bangladesh Army, and its chief, to tarnish the army's image. "Now these parties are opening fake Facebook IDs and websites in the army's name and trying to confuse the public," he said. Abdur Rahman also said conspiracies against the army are nothing new for BNP-Jamaat. "After ascending to power with a false coup, BNP Founder Ziaur Rahman killed thousands of innocent army officials and freedom fighters through the so-called tribunal." BNP and Jamaat have always worked to implicate the army in controversies, he said at the presser. He added: "Yesterday [Monday], Jatiya Oikya Front chief Dr Kamal Hossain mentioned Yahya Khan's‐the man responsible for 1971's genocide‐name at a presser. If Kamal Hossain stands in front of a mirror, he will only see Yahya's reflection." The joint general secretary accused Dr Kamal Hossain of harbouring anti-liberation war sentiments. "He has started adopting a Pak mentality." Accusing BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front leaders of causing violence and disruption in different parts of the country before the December 30 polls, Abdur said: "BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front are using their own people to vandalize the election offices of Awami League and their allied parties, to sabotage their campaign activities." |
