While talking to news hounds on Saturday night, RAB 9 Chief Lt Col Ali Haidar Azad said: "During the interrogation, Faizul told us that he attacked Prof Zafar Iqbal because the professor was an enemy of Islam."

"The assailant has been admitted to a hospital. During initial investigation, he provided us with contradictory statements. We are yet to determine whether Faizul is a member of a terror group," Ali Haidar of Rapid Action Battalion said.

He said: "More details will be unearthed as we carry out further investigation regarding the attack on Zafar Iqbal."

Zafar Iqbal was speaking at a two-day long fair organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering when he was stabbed in the back of his head by an assailant armed with a knife on Saturday.

Attack on Zafar Iqbal: Who is Faizul?

[Dhaka Tribune] Foyzur Rahman Faizul, who stabbed noted author Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), was a madrasa student and had abandoned his studies to sell clothes on the streets.

According to sources, Faizul gave up his studies four years ago, and started selling clothes in 2016. He traded at Kaliyarkapon Bazar under Derai upazila of Sunamganj.

Locals, preferring to be anonymous, revealed that Faizul was ejected from a local mosque for arguing about the teachings of Islam around that time.

Faizul’s father- Hafiz Atiqur Rahman is a teacher at Jameya Makhlisia Madrasa>Jameya Makhlisia Madrasa situated in the outskirts of Sylhet. Faizul has four other siblings.

The youth used to live with his family in their own home in Sheikhpara area of Sylhet. He left his home after being ejected from the local mosque.

Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, a local villager, told the Dhaka Tribune: "Faizul used to visit Kaliyarkapon village quite often and sold clothes around the neighbourhood. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
we have not seen him for the past two years. He was a student at the Dhol Madrasa at the village.

"Faizul’s maternal uncle Zahar Mia was also taken out from a mosque for arguing about Islam. Zahar currently lives in Kuwait. He followed the footsteps of his uncle and tried to establish his interpretation of Islam into the mosque, but faced stiff resistance from the local mosque-goers."

Following the attack on Zafar Iqbal, Faizul’s family members locked up their residence and fled the neighbourhood around 9pm on Saturday.

Before leaving their home, the family told their neighbours that they are visiting the hospital.

Law enforcers soon conducted a raid at Faizul’s home but are yet to track down the family.

Faizul is currently undergoing treatment at the Sylhet CMH. Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the SWAT team had finally arrived...
a statement released by the Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) has confirmed that Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is currently out of danger at the Dhaka CMH.

Unknown Islamist group flexes its muscles in Ctg
2010-02-25
[Bangla Daily Star] Around 19 people including six policemen were injured, one critically, in a violent clash between madrasa students and law enforcers in the port city yesterday.

The clash erupted after police barred members of recently formed Islamist group Hefazate Islam Bangladesh from erecting podium for a rally at Laldighi Maidan in the morning and intercepted the rally-bound madrasa students in Baluchchhara around 2:15pm, sources say.

Several thousand students on around 40 vehicles were heading towards the rally from different Kawmi madrasas in Hathazari and Fatikchhari. They used bricks and blasted several cocktails during the clash.

Police fired blank shots and charged baton to disperse the students and picked up around 40 from the spot, the sources add.

Of the 13 injured students, seven were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and the rest at Hathazari Health Complex. One of them was hit by cocktail splinters and his condition was stated to be critical.

The sources say Hefazate Islam announced to hold the rally in the afternoon in protest against the government's move to slap ban on religion-based politics, cancellation of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution and proposed education policy.

The organisation claims they obtained permission from Muslim High School authorities for erecting the podium as the ground belongs to the school.

Assistant Commissioner (DB) Jahangir Alam however said they did not allow erection of the podium or holding the rally as the organisation did not have required permission from the Chittagong Metropolitan Police.

A tense situation was prevailing since morning as the police barred the organisation from erecting the podium.

Meanwhile, the madrasa students went on the rampage again in the evening and injured a police constable in Hathazari and vandalised the vehicle of Superintendent of Police (SP) Md ZA Morshed.

Morshed came under attack near Chittagong University gate No 2 around 6:00pm. He was going to talk to Hathazari Moinul Islam Madrasa Director Ahmad Shafi, also ameer of Hefazate Islam.

Over 1,500 students put up a barricade near Hathazari Bus Stand and clashed with the police, leaving one policeman injured, said Additional SP Amena Begum.

The students were face to face with police as of 8:30 last night.

HISTORY OF HEFAJATE ISLAM
Director of Hathazari Boro Madrasa Ahmad Shafi, popularly known as Boro Huzur, and Chairman of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Mufti Izharul Islam are its main founders.

The platform was formed a month ago in Chittagong comprising teachers of several hundred Kawmi madrasas in order to forge a greater movement against the government's different steps.

Yesterday's rally was the first showdown of Hefajate Islam. The organisation had planned to make a huge gathering of students from over 100 Kawmi madrasas from Hathazari, Fatikchhari and Patiya, and Cox's Bazar.

Contacted, Mufti Izharul Islam of Jameyatul Ulum Madrasa in Lalkhan Bazar claimed himself as Nayebe Ameer of Hefajate Islam. Izhar is the founder of the hilltop madrasa where over one thousand students reside.

He said Ahmad Shafi is the Ameer of Hefazate Islam. He blamed the government and law-enforcement agencies for foiling the pre-scheduled rally and attacking the madrasa students. He announced to raise a greater movement in protest against the police attack.

He also termed the move "stupidity" of the government.

Izhar said they formed the platform to raise a movement against the government's "anti-Islam activities" like attempt to ban religion-based politics, formulating secular education draft policy and cancelling the Fifth Amendment.

He also warned of tougher movement against "foreign conspiracy" to separate Chittagong Hill Tracts from Bangladesh.

"It is foreign conspiracy to make a separate Christian state there," he said.

He vowed to form a greater platform in cooperation with different political parties to protest against the government's "anti-Islam" activities.

Asked about joining a movement with Jamaat-e-Islami, Izharul said they have no relation with Jamaat.

3 suspected LeT men remanded
2009-11-07
[Bangla Daily Star] Three suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba leaders, arrested with links to a plot to attack the US embassy in Dhaka, were placed on a two-day remand yesterday.

The Detective Branch of police produced Mufti Harun Izahar, son of Islami Oikya Jote leader Mufti Izaharul Islam, Shahidul Islam and Al Amin alias Saiful before the metropolitan magistrate's court seeking their 10-day remand, said Sanwar Hossain, Assistant Commissioner of DB.

He said the arrestees needed to be remanded for obtaining crucial information about the plot, their network and the people involved in it.

Detectives arrested the three at Jameyatul Ulum Madrasa on a hill at Lalkhan Bazar in Chittagong on Wednesday night. They were brought to Dhaka Thursday night.

Lashkar-e-Taiba works for banned Islamist outfit Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji).

Meanwhile, Izaharul Islam, chairman of an IOJ faction, protested the arrest of his son Harun Izahar and the two others denying their involvement with LeT or Huji.

Izaharul, also founder of the madrasa, said his son Harun established Al Iman Academy, an Islamic kindergarten, at South Khulshi in the port city.

He said the two other arrestees are former students of the madrasa and now work as teachers at his son's school.

DB officials said Izahar, along with another suspect, did recce of the US embassy area several times to devise an attack plan. They also detected several calls the three made to several Pakistani militant leaders.

Pakistani national Abdur Rahman, detained in his home country this week with links to militancy, transferred money to the bank account of Mufti Harun's brother Faizur Rahman, said DB sources.

Izaharul told The Daily Star that both the madrasa and school receive donations from sources at home and abroad.

Asked about the money sent from Pakistan, the IOJ leader said he was unaware of the matter.

2009-05-11
[Bangla Daily Star] Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized chemicals and other materials used for making bombs, and leaflets of Hijbut Tawhid from Jameya Arabia Khwaja Moeenuddin Madrasa compound in the city yesterday afternoon.

The district Qaumi Madrasa Oikya Parishad uses the madrasa as a temporary office.

Rab recovered half a kilogram of chemicals, six capacitors, one six-volt battery, electric circuit boards, a watch, components of a watch, a remote control unit, large marbles and splinters and 13 leaflets.

Acting on a tip-off, Rab searched the madrasa compound in Bazar Road area and found a sack in the corridors leading to the toilets on the ground floor, sources said. The sack contained the confiscated items.

Lt Col Mamunur Rashid of Rab-8 told The Daily Star that no one had yet been arrested in this regard. Rab was examining the materials found in the sack, he said.

Maulana Abdul Majid Talukdar, principal of the madrasa, told The Daily Star that the madrasa was closed on Thursday last for the annual summer vacation and there were no students or teachers in the madrasa or its hostel.

He said certain 'vested quarters' had planted these items inside the madrasa to malign the image of the qaumi madrasa.

Iraqi Forces, U.S. Special Forces detain six Shi'a extremists in Baghdad
2007-09-08
Scouts from the 6th Iraqi Army Division detained an alleged extremist militant brigade commander and one other suspected terrorist Sept. 6 in Rahmaniyah, near Baghdad.

The alleged brigade commander operates out of Karkh and leads a group of more than 750 insurgents to conduct improvised explosive device and sniper attacks against Coalition Forces and civilian contractors in the Aamel area. Both detainees are believed to be linked to a brutal attack in May that targeted Sunni residents in the Saddam Place apartments, which resulted in the deaths of 13 innocent civilians. The suspects are also alleged to have ties to an execution committee that is responsible for assassinating innocent civilians fighting for a safe and secure Iraq.

Intelligence reports indicate the suspects are cooperating with foreign fighters and assisting other insurgents in acquiring sniper training in Iran. In addition, one of the detainees has been facilitating meetings at a local mosque to hold clandestine meetings and to collect information on Coalition Forces.

In an earlier operation, Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained four Shi’a extremist militants during an intelligence driven raid Sept. 6 in Baghdad. One of the targeted individuals is accused of murdering a member of ISOF and is further suspected of distributing Shi’a extremist propaganda in Hay al Amel. A second detainee is reportedly to be physician who works in a public clinic in Hay Al Jameyat where he allegedly killed four other doctors. Forces detained two additional suspicious individuals during the mission.

U.S. Special Forces served as advisers during these operations. No Iraqi or Coalition Forces were injured during these raids.

Bangladesh
Khelafat leader Habibur held for militant 'link'
2007-05-17
The joint forces detained Moulana Habibur Rahman, nayeb-e-ameer of a faction of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, from his father-in-law's house at the city's Jherjheri para early yesterday. Habibur was arrested on charge of having links with the militant groups and he was shown arrested under the emergency power rules, a police official said. After his arrest at 1:10am, the law enforcers took him to the Sylhet Kotwali Police Station where officials quizzed him.
"Mahmoud! This is a Number 6! I distinctly asked for a Number 7 truncheon!"
"Sorry, Sahib! You broke the Number 7 on Akter Hossein! There's a new one on order!"
"Well, drive a nail through the Number 6, then! We'll just have to make due."
"Right, Sahib!"

At about 1:00pm yesterday, Kotwali police produced Habibur before the Sylhet Sadar cognizance magistrate's court, wherefrom he was sent to the jail lock-up.

In 1994, 'Sahaba Sainik Parishad' run by Habibur announced Tk 50,000 bounty on the head of writer Taslima Nasrin. On October 13 that year, the man with several hundred people put blockade in front of the deputy commissioner's office to press for hanging Taslima. Habibur once told about his experience of joining training programmes in Afghanistan. However, after the emergence of militant groups like JMB, he started denying his links with and support for Afghan wars.

Moulana Habibur Rahman, who is also the principal of Jameya Madania Islamia at Kazirbazar, used his students against Afsar Uddin, a lessee of the adjacent Kazirbazar cattle market, to 'extend' the madrasa in 2005. Habibur also grabbed some valuable lands of the LGED at the city's Bagbari in 1992 for setting up a Nurani Madrasa. However, the district administration freed the government lands shortly afterwards.

Habibur Rahman, who was an ally of the BNP-led alliance government, later shifted his political line and managed nomination of the Awami League-led combine for Sylhet-6 constituency (Golapganj and Beanibazar upazilas) ahead of the election scheduled for January (later cancelled). The matter fuelled agitation among the rank and file in the AL-led combine.
Beany Bazaar. Really. We did not make that up.
