Hafiz Saeed's house arrest extended by two months
2009-03-10
The Lahore High Court (LHC) extended the house arrest of Hafiz Saeed, head of banned outfit Jamaat-Ud-Dawa>Jamaat-Ud-Dawa and four others by 60 days on Monday. Hafiz Saeed was presented before the review board of the LHC along with his four aides under high security. The Punjab government pleaded the court to extend the house arrests of banned outfit leaders. However, Saeed's counsel Zafar Iqbal opposed the government's request. The judicial review board of the LHC, comprising three judges, extended the house arrest of Hafiz Saeed and three of his key aides, Haji Amir Hamza, Col (retd) Nazir Ahmed and Mufti Abdur Rehman by 60 days. However, they did not accede to the authorities'' request to prolong the house arrest of two other JuD leaders, Qazi Kashif Niaz and Qari Yasin Baloch, as well and ordered that they be freed.

Pak crackdown on JuD an eyewash says Burney
2008-12-11
Casting doubts on Pakistan's "crackdown" on activists of Jamaat-Ud-Dawa(JuD) - a political arm of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Ansar Burney, a former Pakistani minister, on Thursday asked why "arrested" terrorists have not been produced in court.

He said that the Pakistan Government had permitted Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed to use a bullet proof vehicle whereas his own security had been cut down.

Burney, a noted Pakistani human rights activitist, said though there was a ban on LeT, the same organisation with the same leaders was working under the name of Jamaat-ud-Dawa and the authorities were well aware of it.

Accusing the Pakistan Government of not sincerely acting against LeT and Jamaat-ud-Dawa, he said when there was a ban on LeT, then how was Jamaat-ud-Dawa allowed to be constituted?

"From where is Jamaat-ud-Dawa getting money," he asked wondering why the Pakistan Government did not pay any heed to the formation of Jamaat-ud-Dawa earlier?

Why have those who the Pakistan government claims to have arrested not been produced in a court of law? he asked.

He said there are training camps for terrorists in Pakistan and boys are being trained there.

Pakistan should find out who provided training to the ten terrorists involved in the recent Mumbai attacks, he said.

The arrested militants should be tried by the respective Governments and stringent action should be initiated against them, he said adding that seriousness on the part of both the countries is needed to tackle the scourge.

Regretting that there was "more of politics" and no solution to terrorism, he said India and Pakistan should sit together like brothers to find a solution to the problem.

Hafiz Saeed 'expresses concern' over Geelani's health
2007-03-07
(PTI): Banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba's Founder Hafez Muhammad Saeed today spoke to Syed Ali Shah Geelani to inquire about the health of the hardline Kashmiri leader who is suffering from kidney cancer. Saeed called Geelani in Jammu and Kashmir and "expressed his concern" over the health of the Hurriyat leader, the Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, an organisation founded by Saeed and seen as the parent of the LeT, said in a release from Lahore.

The Lashkar founder's name tops the list of wanted men for the 2001 terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament, forwarded by India to Pakistan. Sayeed spoke to Geelani as officials of the two countries held the first meeting of the Joint Mechanism on Terrorism here, during which the two sides were expected to discuss cooperation relating to wanted persons.

While the Pakistan Government banned LET and the Jaish-e- Mohammad in 2001, the JUD has been kept under a "watch list" by the Pakistan Interior Ministry. The United States, however, has proscribed the outfit.
