After blows to proxies, Iran advances space program with Russian assistance
2025-04-21
[IsraelTimes] Islamic Republic said to build 54-square-mile complex with spaceport at Chabahar; experts say space technology could enhance Tehran’s long-range missile capabilities

Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
is reportedly building a major spaceport as part of an effort to maintain its regional prowess following major blows to its proxies across the Middle East.

Bloomberg detailed the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s plans to build the facility, likened to Florida’s Cape Canaveral, in Chabahar, a launch site close to the equator, making it more efficient for launches.

The site, which was supposed to open last year, will contain a 54-square-mile complex, allowing Iran to launch powerful spacecraft into orbit, the Friday report said.

The program has reportedly raised concerns among Western nations — particularly the US and Israel — that Iranian space technology could be used to advance the country’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capabilities.

"Iran’s work on space-launch vehicles — including its two-stage, liquid-fueled Simorgh satellite carrier rocket — likely shortens the timeline to produce an ICBM due to the similarities in technology," General Anthony Cotton, commander of US Strategic Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee last month.

One of the program’s reported aims is to send to space 20 internet satellites named after Qassem Soleimani
, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force commander killed by a US drone in 2020.

With more satellites, Iran could better guide its long-range weapons, according to the report. John Sheldon, an Abu Dhabi-based founding partner at AstroAnalytica, a space consulting firm, was quoted as saying the Iranians "could become much more precise in their targeting and have quicker reaction times to launch their own ballistic missile forces to hit targets much more precisely."

The report did not provide precise figures regarding the costs of the program, though a senior Iranian official reportedly said last November that approximately $11 million would be provided to Iran’s space agency, despite the sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy.

According to the report, the program is also being supported by Iran’s strategic relationship with Russia, as both countries face sanctions from the West. Russian President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a 20-year strategic pact in January.

"What Russia definitely has is the expertise," Juliana Suess, a researcher at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, was quoted as saying. "That’s something that Iran is after."

In October, two Iranian-made satellites were sent into orbit from Russia. Iranian drones have also been used throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The advancement of the program has led the UK and the EU to sanction Brigadier General Ali Jafarabadi, who leads the IRGC’s space division. The UK has also sanctioned the Iranian Space Agency.

"Our enemies constantly try to prevent us from standing on our own feet, but this has driven us to achieve scientific and technological advancements," Pezeshkian said of the program in February.

Matthew Schmidt, an associate professor of national security and political science at the University of New Haven, told Bloomberg that the Iranian space program’s advancements are motivated by the blows the country’s proxies were recently dealt in Leb
...an Iranian satrapy until recently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel...
and Syria.

"Iran has a need now, especially after the losses of its proxy power to Israel, to reestablish some kind of pathway to do power projection," he said. "They see space technology and aeronautical technology as a place to do it."

Iran has not explicitly said whether the program is intended for military purposes, claiming that its goal is to achieve the same technological capabilities as Western countries.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
Iran has called for the destruction of Israel for decades and launched barrages of long-range missiles at its adversary twice in the past year.

The Islamic Theocratic Republic recently began negotiations with the US on its nuclear program, aiming to reach a deal that will ease sanctions. It is unclear whether the Omani-mediated talks are making headway.

Iran claims that its nuclear program is intended only for civilian purposes, but it nevertheless has enriched uranium to levels that are only necessary for developing an atomic bomb.

Qaani is alive and is currently being interrogated in Iran, sources claim - report
2024-10-11
[JPost] That's gonna be painful
Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Brigadier-General Esmail Qaani is alive and currently under investigation in Iran, the Middle East Eye reported on Thursday, citing several sources.
RUMINT!! Getcher hot RUMINT here!
His whereabouts have been unknown since Israel's Saturday strike in Beirut that killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah's presumed successor, Hashem Safieddine.

According to the report, the Islamic Republic is currently researching security breaches, with ten sources from Beirut, Baghdad, and Tehran telling the UK-based news outlet that both Qaani and his team were under isolation while under examination.

In addition, on Thursday, Israeli media, citing Sky News, reported that Qaani had suffered from a heart attack during interrogations.
A heart attack is perfectly understandable, given the circumstances. Especially if he actually is innocent of this accusation.
"The Iranians have serious suspicions that the Israelis have infiltrated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, especially those working in the Lebanese arena, so everyone is currently under investigation," a source told the Middle East Eye.
*Snicker* Don’t tell him that the other spy’s name is Mohammed…or maybe Mahmoud… Ahmed? I forget, but something common like that.
However, the report also cited a source linked to Hezbollah, who alleged unequivocally that the breach was "100 percent Iranian."

War toll mounts for Hezbollah with key figures among hundreds killed
2024-04-19
[Ynet] Over six months since the war in the Gaza Strip began and expanded to the northern front with Hezbollah, resulting in significant losses among the Shiite terror group's ranks extending beyond Lebanon.

Hezbollah has confirmed the deaths of 280 operatives, but the IDF claims the number is much higher. The targeted strikes on vehicles of high-ranking commanders demonstrate the IDF's deep understanding of Hezbollah's hierarchy and key operational roles.
…not to mention trackers on cell phones …
The army confirmed on Tuesday the deaths of two Hezbollah commanders during an operation in southern Lebanon's Ain Baal. Ismail Yusuf Baz, who led Hezbollah's Coastal Sector, was one of those killed. Reports indicate he was a seasoned and high-ranking member of Hezbollah's military wing, holding the position of a brigade commander.

The IDF noted that Baz had played a key role in coordinating and planning the launch of rockets and anti-tank missiles at Israel from Lebanon's coastal region. During the war, he also orchestrated various terrorist operations targeting Israel.

Footage circulating on Lebanese social media shows Baz's car engulfed in flames after an apparent drone strike.

The IDF later said it eliminated the head of the rocket and missile unit of the Western Sector of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force Mohammed Mustafa Shhouri. The army said that this commander was instrumental in planning and executing numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilian areas, working from both the central and western Lebanese regions. This attack also resulted in the death of another operative involved in Hezbollah's rocket and missile operations.

In early April, the IDF reported the targeted killing of Ali Ahmad Hussein, who led the Hajir offensive sector for Hezbollah's Radwan Force. The army described Hussein as a seasoned and high-ranking figure within the terror group, holding the position of a brigade commander.

His duties included orchestrating terror activities in the Ramim Ridge region, targeting the Israeli rear. The statement noted that Hussein had initiated numerous attacks on Israeli soil since the outbreak of the war. He was killed alongside two subordinates.

In late March, the IDF assassinated Ali Abdulhassan Na'im, the deputy commander of Hezbollah's rocket and missile unit. The army highlighted his role as a pivotal source of expertise within the organization, spearheading rocket strategies and heavy rocket launch operations against Israel.

Ismail Ali Al-Zain, another senior Radwan Force commander, was killed during a strike in the southern Lebanese town of Kounine in late March.

Several more senior Hezbollah figures were eliminated in February, including Ali Mohammed Dibes, a central commander in the Radwan force, and Hassan Mahmoud Saleh, who was killed in an airstrike attributed to the IDF in the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Roman. Saleh, equivalent in rank to a brigade commander, had extensive operational experience and had participated in attacks on various regions in northern Israel in recent months.

On February 12, the IDF confirmed it struck a car in southern Lebanon that it said was carrying Hezbollah operatives shortly after Saudi channel Al Hadath reported that Mohammad Alawiyeh, the commander of Hezbollah's Maroun a-Ras sector, was a passenger in the targeted vehicle. He was critically wounded in the attack and reportedly succumbed to his injuries on February 23.

In early January, the focus shifted to Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force after the targeted killing of Wissam al-Tawil in southern Lebanon. Tawil, reportedly a Radwan Force commander, was known for his role in conflicts throughout Syria and Lebanon. The Voice of the Capital, a Syrian opposition website, hinted at Tawil's familial ties to Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.

An airstrike near Tawil's funeral site killed Ali Hussein Burji, the regional commander of Hezbollah’s air unit in southern Lebanon, who was reputed for coordinating drone strikes against Israel. Hezbollah quickly denied the Israeli claims.

Since the onset of the war, other key figures linked with Hezbollah and the broader so-called "axis of resistance" have been eliminated, including prominent Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri who was killed in a drone strike in Beirut in early January.

In January, Ali Mohammad Hodroj was reportedly killed in a strike in Lebanon. He was initially described as the commander of the Iranian Quds Force's Palestine division in the Tyre region of Lebanon. Later reports suggested he was a Hezbollah operative, a claim subsequently confirmed by the Shiite terrorist organization, which listed him as a casualty from its ranks.

In early March, three members of the Imam Hossein Division were reportedly eliminated. The Iranian-backed militia was formed by Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force who was eliminated in a U.S. drone strike in early 2020.

This group operates in conjunction with Hezbollah but is directly linked to Iran and comprises thousands of members from diverse national backgrounds throughout the Middle East. These individuals arrived in Lebanon to support Hezbollah's efforts against Israel.

Moreover, Hezbollah forces are present in Syria, where they contribute to the Iranian-led "axis of resistance."

Last month, Syrian media reported an Israeli strike near Aleppo in the northwest of the country. Arab and international reports indicated a historically high death toll from this strike, with at least 44 fatalities and numerous others wounded. The targets were reported to be a Hezbollah command center and arms storage facilities operated by pro-Iranian militias. Of those killed, seven were identified as Hezbollah operatives.

Russian Delusion Watch: Russian news roundup on the Iranian attack on Israel

Military experts explained the success of Iran's attack
Are they considered good military experts?
[Regnum] The attack on Israeli targets was successful due to the fact that Iran was able to competently break through the air defense system of this country. Military expert Mikhail Onufrienko expressed this opinion to a Regnum correspondent on April 14.

“Iran launched several hundred Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles in different directions, which overloaded the Israeli air defense system and forced it to expend most of its missiles on them. The second echelon was already moving ballistic missiles with multiple warheads. These are not hypersonic missiles, which Iran does not have in service. The Israeli “Iron Dome” turned out to be unsuitable for intercepting ballistic missiles with multiple warheads under conditions of great physical stress,” the military expert noted.

He added that this "dome" was created to protect against primitive missiles that were used in launches from the Gaza Strip. However, for more modern missiles its permeability has become obvious. This was clear several decades ago, when American Patriot systems tried to shoot down rather primitive Iranian missiles. Then the effectiveness of these systems was estimated at 43%. The Americans tried to interpret these figures, bringing them to 62%, but even in their interpretation, a third of the missiles passed through the air defense system.

Now the situation has changed. It became obvious that cheap drones are able to overload almost any air defense system. There is no air defense system that could completely ensure 100% impenetrability of any zone. Therefore, Israel, which is surrounded by opponents on all sides, should negotiate with them. Otherwise, even with US support, it can be destroyed or damaged to such an extent that it will not be able to function as a militarized state.

In turn, captain 1st rank reserve, military expert Vasily Dandykin pointed out that there were conflicting reports about the course of events. The Israeli side claims that 99% of Iranian missiles and drones were shot down, which is similar to the rhetoric of the Kyiv regime, which also claimed the almost complete destruction of Russian missiles by Ukrainian air defenses, despite the fact that the Russian Armed Forces are effectively hitting Ukrainian targets. The Iranian side claims that there were successful hits on the target.

“Most likely, the ballistic missiles were indeed successful, bypassing Israeli air defenses, which are considered one of the best in the world. The Iranian attack was massive, more than 300 products were used, and not all of them were intercepted by Israel. Even the most modern air defense system can miss the target during a massive attack. Perhaps because of Israeli air defense, Iran's strikes were not as effective as he had hoped. Ballistic missiles had a chance of breaking through Israel’s Iron Dome, since they move at high speed,” explained the military expert.

As Regnum reported, Middle East expert Mais Kurbanov noted that with its massive attack, Iran dispelled the myth about the invincibility of Israel's air defense system.
Fascinating. Do go on.
He stressed that the strikes against Israel were Iran's legitimate right to self-defense. On April 1, Israel destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus with its missile attack. Among the dead were two generals of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) - Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji, and five more representatives of this military formation were also killed in the attack.

As Kurbanov noted, Israel believed that it had the most advanced air defense system in the world. However, Iran achieved its goals; it did not attack civilians. Iran's target was a military base, and it hit it. According to Israeli experts, the Iranian attack cost the Israeli economy about $1.5 billion, and this despite the fact that Iran used less than one percent of its arsenal.
That’s two percent, if the 50% failure rate is consistent across Iran’s entire supply.
Iran launched a massive attack on Israel using more than 200 missiles and attack drones. It lasted at least five hours and was a response to an Israeli military strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus. The Israeli army, in turn, attacked targets of the Shiite organization Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Tehran informed neighboring states about the upcoming attack on Israel three days before it began.

The head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, noted that Iran’s operation against Israel has been completed, but the Armed Forces of the republic are ready to act in the future if necessary.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement after Iran’s attack on Israel, expressed concern about the dangerous escalation of the situation in the Middle East and called on all parties to show restraint. The agency recalled that the Iranian authorities called the attack an exercise of the right to self-defense and a response to the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. Russia strongly condemned the attack on the consulate, but because of the position of the West, the UN Security Council did not do so, the Foreign Ministry emphasized.

NATO calls for restraint after Iran's attack on Israel. Iran's Foreign Ministry has summoned the ambassadors of Britain, Germany and France following a massive attack on Israel.

The American television channel CNN reported that Israel will respond to a massive attack by Iran, but the scale and parameters of the response have not yet been determined.

White House adviser John Kirby said the United States does not want to expand the escalation in the Middle East after Iran's massive strikes on Israel.

Minister without portfolio in the narrow military cabinet Benny Gantz said Israel intends to create a regional coalition against the Iranian threat and respond to the attack at the appropriate time and in an appropriate manner.

Orientalist Kurbanov: Iran has dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Israeli air defense
With its massive attack, Iran dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Israel's air defense system. This opinion was expressed to a Regnum correspondent on April 14 by an expert on the Middle East, Mais Kurbanov.

“Many thought that Iran would not respond to an attack by Israel, since the latter has nuclear arsenals and is backed by the United States and Europe. But Iran saw how the Americans left Afghanistan and Iraq. It became clear that they were no longer a force. The Iranian leadership is well aware that if it does not respond to aggression, Israel may take further steps. Iran warned Israel in advance about the response to the attack, thereby giving it the opportunity to prepare for it. As a result of the night operation, Iran checked the operation of its drones, assessed their vulnerability and accuracy of hitting the target,” the orientalist noted.

As the expert noted, Israel believed that it had the most advanced air defense system in the world. However, Iran achieved its goals; it did not attack civilians. Iran has dispelled the myth of the invincibility of Israel's air defense system. Despite the fact that American and European fighter jets were scrambled to counter the drones, the Iranian drones reached their target. Iran has shown that it can give an answer to everyone. Together with Russia, he is taking big steps to create a multipolar world, Kurbanov added.

As Regnum reported, Iran launched a massive attack on Israel using more than 200 missiles and attack drones. It lasted at least five hours and was a response to an Israeli military strike on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus. The head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, noted that Iran’s operation against Israel has been completed, but the Armed Forces of the republic are ready to act in the future if necessary.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that Washington is holding back the Middle East conflict, unlike the Ukrainian one, due to possible damage to its own interests. According to him, the death of people in Gaza worsens the prospects of US President Joe Biden in the upcoming elections, and due to the conflict between Israel and Iran, uncertainty is growing.

Russian political scientist, historian, expert on the problems of the Middle East and Central Asia, Semyon Bagdasarov, noted that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decides to retaliate against Iran’s nuclear facilities, Tehran may take more powerful actions against Israel. Iran has significantly more powerful weapons, such as the Kheibar Shekan missiles with a range of 1,450 kilometers and warheads weighing 550 kilograms, he added.

Head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces: if Israel responds, the next attack will be larger
Iran will respond with redoubled force if Israel takes any action on Iranian soil. The head of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, announced thisto the Tasnim agency on April 14.

According to him, if Israel responds to the operation that Iran carried out on the night of April 14, then the next response will be much broader and larger-scale.

As noted by the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hossein Salami, Iran's operation against Israel was more successful than expected.

“Our reaction to any aggression from Israel will be more severe,” the Iranian Press TV channel reports his words.

As reported by Regnum news agency, Bagheri previously said that Iran’s operation against Israel has been completed, but the Armed Forces of the republic are ready to act in the future if necessary.

Syria declares Iran's right to self-defense if it attacks Israel
Iran attacked Israel as part of its right to self-defense. This was stated on April 14 in a statement by the Syrian Foreign Ministry, which was published by the SANA agency.

“The Iranian strikes on Israeli military targets took place within the framework of Iran’s exercise of the right of self-defense and in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry said.

It is noted that Syria expresses solidarity with Iran.

Iraq called Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel legitimate
Iran's attack on Israel is a natural right and a response guaranteed by international law. This was announced on April 14 by the acting speaker of the Iraqi House of Representatives, Mohsen al-Mandalawi.

“The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the attack on its consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus is its natural and legitimate right, guaranteed by international law and laws,” al-Mandalawi said.

According to him, Israel has crossed all red lines, violating the sovereignty of several countries, which is reflected in the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

[JPost] The security source identified the victim as Mohammad Surur who worked in currency exchanges and money transfers, including between Iran-backed terror groups opposed to Israel.

A Lebanese man sanctioned for allegedly funneling millions of dollars to Hamas was found dead in a mountain town outside Beirut, a security source told Reuters on Wednesday.

The security source identified the victim as Mohammad Surur and said he hailed from a northeastern town near the Syrian border and worked in currency exchanges and money transfers, including between Iran-backed terror groups opposed to Israel.

He was found dead in a house in the town of Beit Meri on Tuesday, with several gunshot wounds to his legs, the Lebanese security source said.

That, along with a large of sum money found on the body, led Lebanon's security forces to conclude that Surur had been subject to a violent interrogation, not attempted theft, the source added.

Surur was sanctioned in 2019 by the US Treasury, which said he had transferred "tens of millions of dollars per year" between the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' external branch, the Quds Force, and Hamas's armed wing the Qassam Brigades.

He would have been 57 at the time of his death, according to biographical details published by the Treasury.

The Treasury said in 2019 that Surur was also linked to Lebanon's Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas. Surur has been seen at public events hosted by Hezbollah in Lebanon but did not appear to have a formal or senior role directly within the terror group, a source familiar with Hezbollah's operations told Reuters.

Hezbollah has been exchanging fire across Lebanon's southern border with Israel in parallel with the Gaza war.

[Regnum] As a result of airstrikes carried out by the Israeli Air Force on a number of positions south of the Syrian capital Damascus, several civilians were killed, the Syrian Defense Ministry announced on January 29.

It is noted that on January 29, Israel committed “air aggression from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights,” striking a number of points south of Damascus.

“As a result, several civilians were killed and injured, and some property damage was caused,” the statement said.

As Regnum reported, on January 20, the Al Hadath TV channel, citing medical sources in Damascus, reported that at least ten civilians were killed when the Israeli Air Force struck a residential area in the west of the Syrian capital Damascus. It was noted that the attack hit one of the houses on Mezze Avenue, which is located near the Iranian Embassy.

On January 2, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced an Israeli air strike on Damascus. The defense department then clarified that the strikes were carried out early in the morning from the Golan Heights on “a number of positions in the suburbs of Damascus”, causing material damage.
The Times of Israel adds:
Iranian media describes site as an IRGC military advisory facility on outskirts of Syrian capital; war monitor puts toll at seven; no comment from IDF

Syrian state media said on Monday that "a number of Iranian advisers" were killed in an alleged Israeli attack south of the capital, in a rare acknowledgment by Damascus of Iranian casualties in strikes on Syrian territory attributed to Israel.

It also said non-combatants were killed but did not give a figure for either set of fatalities. Iran’s ambassador to Syria had earlier said there were no Iranian casualties in the strike.

The pro-government Dama Post said the strike hit the area of Sayida Zeinab without providing further details.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based opposition-linked war monitor, put the corpse count at seven; however, its figures have sometimes proved unreliable.

fighters, said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the SOHR, raising an earlier toll of six.

According to SOHR, among those killed were four Syrians, one of whom was the bodyguard of a member of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. It did not give the nationalities of the others and noted that it was unclear whether civilians were among the dead.

A source in Iran’s regional alliance also told Rooters that the strike hit a location used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. The semi-official Tasnim news agency described the site as an Iranian military advisory center in Syria.

An Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment on the earth-shattering kabooms. The IDF rarely comments on alleged strikes in Syria.

The strike is the third in two months blamed on Israel and targeting Iranian infrastructure and officers in Damascus.

On January 20 an alleged Israeli strike on Damascus killed the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence chief for Syria and his deputy as well as two other Guards members.

Iran threatens to close Mediterranean Sea over Gaza war
2023-12-23
[NY Post] An Iranian leader threatened on Saturday to close off the Mediterranean Sea in retaliation for the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, local media outlets said.

Israel and the West "shall soon await the closure of the Mediterranean Sea, [the Strait of] Gibraltar and other waterways," Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards warned.

The potential closure would be revenge for the United States and its allies for supporting "crimes" in the Gaza Strip as part of Israel’s retaliatory war in wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack, the military commander said.

Iran backs Hamas, as well as Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Houthi rebels from Yemen, but has no direct access to the Mediterranean itself — making it unclear exactly how the Guards plan to close off the vast sea.

Naqdi, however, referred to "the birth of new powers of resistance and the closure of other waterways."

Over the past month, Iran has played a major role in the Houthi attacks on Israeli and ally-linked merchant vessels in the Red Sea, which have prompted some shipping companies to pause operations or alter their routes.

Earlier this week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a new partnership aimed at combating the attacks.

"The recent escalation in reckless Houthi attacks originating from Yemen threatens the free flow of commerce, endangers innocent mariners and violates international law," Austin said in a statement from Bahrain.

On Friday, the White House confirmed that Iran was "deeply involved" in planning the Houthi attacks.
