NIA attaches 3 properties in Srinagar belonging to 2 Hurriyat leaders in terror funding case

NIA attaches property of incarcerated Hurriyat (G) leader Ayaz Akbar in Srinagar

[GreaterKashmir] National Investigation Agency (NIA) Tuesday attached the property of incarcerated Hurriyat (G) leader Ayaz Akbar in Shalteng area of Srinagar.

Quoting officials, news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reported that NIA pasted the notice of attachment on the immovable property that read “this is to inform all members of the public that the immovable property ie. land measuring 1 Kanal and 10 Marias under Survey No, 31 at mauza Shalteng Tehsil Srinagar (J8K), in the name of Muhammad Akbar Khanday So Ab. Rehman Khanday, R/o Malora near Imam-ul-Bana Masjid, P.S Parimpora, Srinagar, J&K, as Abadi Deh, has been attached under the Court Orders dated May 31, 2023 in RC-101 20177 NIA/ DLI, by the Special NIA Court, Patiala House Courts, New Dehli.” Muhammad Akbar Khanday is the father of Ayaz Akbar, who is presently serving detention in New Delh’s Tihar Jail since past six years. Ayaz Akbar’s wife passed away in April this year after losing battle to cancer.

NIA attaches two more properties in terror funding case in Kashmir

[GreaterKashmir] A day after attaching 17 properties of Zahoor Ahmed Shah Watali, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday attached two more properties, belonging to another accused, in the Hurriyat terror funding case in Kashmir

The properties of All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC)

separatist leader Mohammad Akbar Khanday include nine kanal land and a 2-storeyed house in Srinagar. These have been attached on the orders of Special NIA Court, New Delhi, under section 33(1) of UAPA.

"Khanday, currently in Tihar Jail facing trial in the terror funding case, was the Spokesperson/ Media advisor of Hurriyat Conference (G). He was raising and collecting funds from within India and abroad through various illegal channels and was using the same to sponsor and promote separatist and terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir," the NIA said.

The statement said that Khanday, who was closely connected with other separatist leaders of the APHC, was operating in close association with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) and he used to collect funds for unlawful and ~~violent~~ mostly peaceful activities. He was also actively involved in activities aimed at secession of Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India, NIA investigations have revealed, it said.

The case, filed suo moto by NIA in May 2017, relates to terrorist and secessionist activities being carried out by ISI-backed proscribed terrorist organizations in Jammu and Kashmir. These banned outfits, including Lashkar-e-Taiba

Geelani threatens more protests if crackdowns are not stopped

[Kashmir Times] Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), today threatened to intensify the ongoing public protests if the crackdowns against the people were not put to an end immediately.

In a statement, he strongly condemned the re-introduction of crackdown, identification parade, arrests of youth and humiliating behaviour with women by police and forces. Geelani also appealed the people to foil such tactics of the government.

He asked the people to come out of their houses and not to allow the police and forces to conduct the crack down and other related actions. "I appeal the people to come out collectively out of their houses and protest and foil the attempts to arrest the youth," Geelani said.

He asked the men to remain on the forefront by forming a defence wall and by keeping the women behind so that forces personnel do not reach to them.

"Those in the crackdown must beat tin and raise slogans. Those outside the crackdown must also raise slogans and move to the area under crackdown. Doing so has become inevitable to save the youth from arrests and protect the honour of women," the Hurriyat (G) chairman said.

Geelani suffering from kidney cancer

The party of hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday confirmed that he was suffering from kidney cancer and had been advised to travel to the United States for medical treatment that was currently unavailable in India, while urging New Delhi to release his travel documents for this purpose.

The Hurriyat Conference (G) issued a press statement saying that the medical team at Apollo Hospital, led by Dr Sameer Kaul, that had conducted tests on Geelani over the weekend, had recommended that the ailing leader travel to the US to undergo laser therapy known as Radio Frequency Ablation on his one remaining kidney, a procedure that they said would not be able to be performed in India.

Geelani, 72, whose hardline faction of the regions main separatist alliance supports union with Pakistan, had one kidney removed two years ago after doctors found cancer. Now, doctors have confirmed the detection of the disease in his remaining kidney. Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, a close Geelani aide, was quoted by AFP, while addressing a news conference in Srinagar, as saying: I urge the Government of India to allow our leader to travel abroad for specialist treatment.

New Delhi currently holds Geelanis passport. He has not been allowed to leave the territory since the insurgency against New Delhis rule began in 1989, except for one occasion in 2005, where he was permitted to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed also joined the chorus urging the Indian authorities to allow Geelani to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the Hurriyat Conference (G) also confirmed that they had received an overwhelmingly large number of offers of kidney donations from the people of Kashmir. However, some sources said that Geelani had ruled out the possibility of undergoing a transplant. Last week, the ailing leader had urged the Kashmiri people not to forget the sacrifices of thousands of youth for the cause of freedom and take the ongoing movement to its logical conclusion. Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, who telephoned Geelani from Pakistan to inquire about his health, quoted him describing that as his last wish.

He also cited Geelani as saying: Everything is in the hands of Allah. But I want that Kashmiris should get freedom as they have sacrificed everything for this cause. You have to safeguard the sacrifices offered by Kashmiris, and I hope you will take the responsibility.

Meanwhile, fears over Geelanis health appears to have brought together rival separatist groups within Indian-held Kashmir. Sources said that the umbrella All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), which Geelani broke away from to form his own faction, believed that the hardliners presence was essential during what it described as the crucial stage that the separatist movement was currently passing through.

They said that Shahidul Islam spokesman and private secretary to APHC chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq had offered to donate his kidney to Geelani, while the APHC chairman last Friday prayed for the hardliners speedy recovery, while attending prayers Srinagars historic Jamia Masjid.
