Thousands rally in Pakistani Kashmir against India

[Dawn] Thousands of Kashmiri people observed a "black day" in Pak Kashmire on Sunday, rallying at an event organised by forces of Evil against Indian "brutalities" and occupation of the Himalayan region. The rally was set up by the United Jihad Council (UJC), which consists of 16 groups, bad boy outfits and political parties, and was attended by jihadi groups including Hizb-ul-Mujahidin and Lashkar-e-Taiba ...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI... (LeT). Both Washington and New Delhi blame LeT for the 2008 terror attacks on Mumbai, which left 166 people dead and derailed a grinding of the peace processor between India and Pakistain. A crowd of around 3,000 people shouted "Al-Jihad", "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) and "We want Freedom" as they gathered in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pak Kashmire, said an AFP news hound at the scene. "Diplomacy, talks and negotiations spanned over several decades have not worked," said Syed Salahuddin, chairman of the UJC. "The only way to liberate Kashmire is jihad and armed struggle because India does not understand the language of dialogue," said Salahuddin, who also leads Hizbul Mujahedin, a bad boy group fighting Indian rule in Kashmire. The protestors waved black flags and shouted: "Our struggle will continue till Kashmire is freed", and condemned Indian "brutalities", as Salahuddin appealed to the government and people of Pakistain to fully support Kashmiri independence.

Three killed in Kashmir gunbattle: Indian army

[Dawn] Two suspected militants and an Indian army soldier were killed on Thursday during a gun battle in Indian-administered Kashmir, in the latest of a series of recent clashes, police said. The exchange of fire erupted late Wednesday when the Indian army and counter-insurgency police raided a house where militants were said to be hiding about 70 kilometres south of the summer state capital Srinagar. "The ensuing encounter left two militants and a soldier dead," a police spokesman said, adding two troopers and a policeman were wounded in the clash that lasted more than 12 hours. One of the militants killed was identified by officials as Adil Pathan, a senior commander of Hizbul Mujahedin. On Thursday last week, Indian commandos stormed a hotel in Srinagar where two militants had been holed up for nearly 24 hours, killing the gunmen. A civilian and a policeman were also killed during the siege. Indian-administered Kashmir had been relatively stable in recent months, but Indian police have reported several prolonged clashes between troops and militants since the siege. Suspected rebels have also killed three of their former colleagues during the last week, police said.

Now Majid's Kashmiri identity unearthed

[Bangla Daily Star] After over 11 months of his arrest, Abdul Majid has been identified as an Indian national and a senior leader of Kashmir-based militant organisation Hizbul Mujahedin>Hizbul Mujahedin, a front organisation of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, which works in Kashmir. Majid's real name is Yusuf Butt who had been staying in the country for years using fake identity to carry out militant activities. Yusuf Butt alias Majid was placed on a four-day remand yesterday after he was taken on five days' remand from November 12 in August 21 grenade attack case. Earlier on November 11 a Dhaka court placed Majid on a five-day remand. During the interrogation in August 21 grenade attack case, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigators have come to know his real and his links to Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Moulana Tajuddin, brother of detained former BNP deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu, and leaders of banned Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji). Additional ASP Abdul Kahar Akand of CID, also the investigation officer of the grenade attack case, told The Daily Star that Yusuf Butt hails from Terigaon village under Kulgaon Police Station of Islamabad district in Kashmir of Indian part. "Yusuf Butt had been staying in the country using fake name Abdul Majid and carrying out militant activities, supplying arms and grenades from Kashmir to the Bangladeshi militants," the CID investigator said. Replying to a query Kahar Akand said Yusuf Butt went to Pakistan and India several times from Bangladesh. CID sources said Yusuf is a close friend of fugitive accused Moulana Tajuddin and they had been collecting grenades and arms from Kashmir. Uttara police arrested Yusuf on January this year in an arms case as a Bangladeshi terrorist and on November 10 he was shown arrested in the grenade attack case following a confessional statement of Huji founder Moulana Sheikh Abdus Salam, also chief of Islamic Democratic Party.

Four rebels dead on Indian Independence Day

[Al Arabiya Latest] Troops killed four Muslim rebels in Indian Kashmir as a separatist strike paralyzed the restive region Saturday in protest against celebrations marking India's 1947 independence, police said. The rebels were killed in a fierce gun battle in southern Kashmir late Friday, on the eve of India's celebrations of its 62nd anniversary of independence from British colonial rule, police said. Since 1989, when insurgents launched a revolt against New Delhi's rule, separatists have marked festivities honoring India's independence as a "black day" in the Muslim-majority region. Anti-India strike Separatists staged their traditional one-day anti-India strike to coincide with the celebrations, shutting down shops and businesses and emptying the streets of people. The four rebels killed by troops belonged to the region's most powerful guerrilla group, the Hizbul Mujahedin, which is fighting for the inclusion of Indian Kashmir by neighboring Pakistan, police said. During the night soldiers also defused eight bombs planted by rebels in the scenic Himalayan region, where authorities have sharply boosted security for the celebrations, said police. "The attempt by militants to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations was foiled," a police spokesman told AFP. In summer capital Srinagar sharpshooters took up positions on top of buildings overlooking the venue for the main celebrations, as part of the heightened security. The tightly guarded Independence Day celebrations were to be attended later in the day by Indian Kashmir's new chief minister, Omar Abdullah, who was elected in May.

2 Hizb commanders among four killed as IHK votes

Indian troops killed four militants in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) on Wednesday and clashed with protesters, as the valley held the latest leg of multi-stage elections. Troops also defused a bomb in Anantnag district minutes before voting centres opened on Wednesday morning for the day-long polls, a police official said. "It was planted by militants on the edge of a road," an officer said. In the neighbouring district of Shopian, security forces shot dead two top commanders of Hizbul Mujahedin. One of the slain, Rais Ahmed, had escaped from police custody last month while being escorted to a court. In northern Baramulla district, police said, troops shot dead two more separatists during a gunbattle on Wednesday afternoon. Later in Anantnag, police wielding batons dispersed scores of anti-election protesters. Despite the clashes, voters turned out in large numbers. Wednesday's voting was the sixth and penultimate stage of the always tense election process in IHK. Separatist politicians and militants had called for a boycott of the polls, arguing that elections strengthen New Delhi's hold over IHK. The first five rounds of voting saw turnout of more than 50 percent. "Over 60 percent eligible voters took part in today's (Wednesday's) polling," senior government official Masood Samoun told reporters in Srinagar. A strict security clampdown was imposed in Srinagar to prevent protests by anti-election separatists, who want to secede the region from India and join it with Pakistan or make it independent. The polls are staggered to allow time for troops to be moved around and provide adequate security. Srinagar votes in the final stage on December 24.

India detains Kashmir rebel spokesman

SRINAGAR, India - Police in Indian Kashmir said Thursday they had arrested the chief spokesman of Islamic militant group Hizbul Mujahedin in the summer capital of the disputed Himalayan region. “Junaid-ul-Islam, the chief spokesman for Hizbul Mujahedin, was arrested from a hide-out in Srinagar in the early hours today,” said B. Srinivas, deputy inspector general of police. “He was active since 1990 and his arrest is a big success for police,” said Srinivas, adding the suspect had been pulled in on information provided by three recently arrested Hizbul members. Islam’s real name was Abdul Khaliq Dar, police said, adding that he used two more alias names—Khalil-ur-Rehman and Fazal-ul-Rehman. “He was involved in planning (attacks) and was one of the top Hizbul leaders wanted by the police,” Srinivas said. “He was dealing with press and was part of Hizbul’s propaganda cell.” Hizbul Mujahedin, which has been active in Indian Kashmir for two decades, is a hardline group fighting for the Indian part of the Himalayan region to be folded into Pakistan. The arrest deals a fresh blow to the pro-Pakistan group. On Tuesday, two of its top commanders were killed during a gun battle and four key members were arrested. Last month, Indian security forces said they shot dead three top Hizbul Mujahedin commanders and arrested a leading rebel allegedly involved in nearly 30 killings.

Five militants and a policeman have died in fresh clashes in insurgency-hit Indian-held Kashmir, officials said on Thursday. Three of the militants were killed early on Thursday after crossing into the Indian-administered part of the disputed Himalayan region from the Pakistani zone, army spokesman Colonel Manjinder Singh said. “They were killed as they entered our territory,” he said, adding that reinforcements were sent to northern Kupwara district and its section of the Line of Control – the de facto border that splits Kashmir. In a separate clash late on Wednesday, two militants and a policeman were killed in the region’s southern Doda district, police said in a statement. Police identified one of the slain militants as a district commander for the hardline militants group Hizbul Mujahedin, which wants all of Kashmir to be under Pakistani rule.

Kashmir fighting leaves 12 dead

Eleven suspected Muslim militants and a policeman were killed in gunbattles in Indian Kashmir, police said Wednesday. Four militants were killed Wednesday as they crossed into southern Poonch and northern Kupwara districts from the Pakistani-zone of the divided state, a police spokesman said. Police said government troops also shot dead two “wanted” commanders of the pro-Pakistan rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin in southern Doda district early Wednesday. Five more militants and a policeman were killed in three gunbattles in Poonch, Kupwara and Kulgam districts late Tuesday, the spokesman added. “It is the bloodiest fighting since the start of Ramadan,” the spokesman said. Ramadan began in Muslim-majority Kashmir on September 14. Ramadan in Kashmir has often been marked by increased violence, as militants believe those who die fighting during the holy month gain more heavenly rewards.

A soldier and a militant died in a separate battle in northern Kupwara district, bordering Pakistan-administered Kashmir, he said.Also three rebels were reported to have died in an avalanche. Police said they recovered the bodies of three militants from the region’s most powerful group – the pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahedin – who were buried in an avalanche.

SRINAGAR, India - Indian troops shot dead foursuspected Islamic militants in revolt-hit Indian Kashmir, police said Sunday, while a Muslim man was also beheaded in further violence. Two of the rebels were killed in a clash Sunday with troops near Shopian, 55 kilometres (34 miles) south of the summer capital, Srinagar, police said, adding the two were members of the region’s most powerful rebel group, Hizbul Mujahedin. Two other militants were shot dead Sunday in a similar clash with troops and police in a district south of Shopian, a police spokesman said. Police said suspected militants beheaded a Muslim man in the Pulwama district, where Shopian is located, early Sunday. The motive for the killing was not immediately known, although militants regularly target people suspected of working with police and troops. Sounds like a motive to me, but I'm not the AFP.

Indian troops kill top rebel, bodyguard in Kashmir

A militant commander on the Indian army’s “most wanted” list in Indian-held Kashmir was shot dead during a fierce gunbattle with troops, police said on Friday. The militant’s bodyguard was also slain, police said. “The two were killed late on Thursday in Morha Daraj village,” police officer Farooq Ahmed said. Mohammed Yasin, a top commander of Hizbul Mujahedin, and his bodyguard were killed during a four-hour battle sparked by a raid on a hideout following a tip-off, police said. Yasin was the Indian army’s “most wanted militant” in the southern twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch. “His death is a big setback to Hizbul,” Ahmed said.
