Barham Salih, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, told the UN Security Council that the number of Afghans returning to the country is expected to reach nearly eight million by the end of this year.
He said many of these returns are taking place under difficult humanitarian conditions and, in some cases, are not entirely voluntary.

Pakistain, which has hosted millions of Afghans for more than four decades, also called at the meeting for greater international attention to the burden borne by refugee-hosting countries.
Nabeel Munir, Pakistain’s Deputy Foreign Minister, said: "We have hosted millions of Afghans for over four decades, extending support and hospitality despite significant economic and security challenges. Our experience demonstrates both the importance of international solidarity and the limits of expecting host countries to shoulder protracted refugee situations."

Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party won the most seats in the country’s parliamentary election, taking 97 of 395 seats in the House of Representatives, according to final results announced by the Interior Ministry on Friday.
The party, founded by a royal adviser close to King Mohammed VI and known by its French acronym PAM, fell short of an absolute majority and will need to negotiate with other parties to form a successor to the current coalition, which it has been a major part of for years.
The election was shaped by mounting frustration among young people, high unemployment despite a thriving economy and demands for better schools, hospitals and housing.
It was the first vote since the deadly mass migration attempts to Ceuta in July and the Gen Z-led protests last year.
The next government will oversee billions of dollars in investment as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 World Cup, prompting some to describe it as the "World Cup government." The new politicianship will also face pressure to address everyday concerns, including jobs, wages and the cost of living.
Despite a major drug- and gold-trafficking scandal allegedly involving some senior PAM members, several of whom were sentenced to prison, the party weathered the political fallout and won more seats than in the previous election.
The National Rally of Independents, or RNI, part of the outgoing governing coalition, suffered major losses, winning 66 seats. The moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party, or PJD,

PAM has previously said it will not form a coalition with RNI. It is likely to join with third-place winner Istiqlal and other parties that won fewer seats to obtain a majority.
A coalition with the PJD is unlikely due to longstanding political rivalry between the two parties. PAM was founded in 2008 by Fouad Ali El Himma, a childhood friend of the king. The party emerged as a major political force seen as a counterweight to the Justice and Development Party, which previously led the government for a decade.
The PJD said it would remain in the opposition.
Among those elected for PJD was Aziz Henawi, an activist who made headlines in Israel in July when, protesting a then-upcoming visit by Transportation Minister Miri Regev, he stood on an Israeli flag while accusing Jackie Kadosh, a leader of Morocco’s Jewish community, of being an Israeli agent.
The Moroccan Constitution requires the king to appoint a prime minister from the party that wins the most seats in legislative elections.

However, the report describes him as the son of a senior Hamas official. According to a Mossad statement in November, weapons seized as part of the operation to thwart the plot belonged to Hamas operative Muhammad Na’im, whose father is senior Gaza-based Hamas politburo official Basem Na’im.
According to The Times report, Mr. X was arrested in Egypt for operating an arms and gold smuggling tunnel into Gaza over a decade ago.
He then moved to the UK and was granted refugee status and eventual citizenship, living as an IT consultant in the suburbs of a large English city, even while his Hamas activities were public knowledge, The Times reports.
He was reportedly not a priority for British security services when he began planning the attack with other Hamas terrorists in Europe.
Mr. X was arrested in central London in November as part of a multinational effort, including the Mossad, to thwart the Hamas terror attack on Jewish community centers, Israeli diplomats and pro-Israel rallies in Germany or Austria last October, aimed to be on the two-year anniversary of the October 7 massacre, The Times reports.
He now faces extradition to Germany, according to the report.

A top Belgian security official has said an Iranian-led effort was behind a number of attacks targeting Jews in the country earlier this year.
Speaking to public broadcaster RTBF, Gert Vercauteren, head of Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis, said those behind a kaboom on a synagogue in Liege and the torching of a car in Antwerp "certainly followed Iran’s call to strike Jewish and Israeli interests everywhere in the world."
None were hurt in either attack.
Vercauteren said the attacks were part of a coordinated effort, and not isolated cases. He said an individual later arrested in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...a NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and structure.... member, but not the most reliable... was leading the coordination of attacks in Europe.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's anti-U.S. vitriol has reached new heights after he suggested he has prepared for a possible military invasion by American forces. "I think you have a responsibility in these roles to look at extreme tail risk," Carney said recently. "That's just risk management. That's not a base case, but it would be irresponsible not to" prepare.
According to armedforces.eu, a military database, the United States Armed Forces have about 1,333,030 active-duty troops, while the Canadian Armed Forces have roughly 63,500 active personnel, and U.S. firepower vastly outguns that available to Canada.
Carney railed against new U.S. tariffs that went into place in the absence of a formal trade deal between the two countries.
"Progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians. As a result, this evening, I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa," he said in a statement in late August.
“In recent days, the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal. In short, they asked too much, and they offered too little,” Carney said during a press conference.

A Canadian Jewish journalist was reportedly taken off the air and faced disciplinary action by the country’s public broadcaster because he posted a video of an anti-Israel, pro-Paleostinian protest outside his Toronto synagogue’s service on Yom Kippur on Sunday evening.
Award-winning news hound Neil Herland uploaded the video on his X page, which showed protesters hurling abuse, including a man shouting "Zionist alert" into a megaphone, while another protester with a megaphone repeatedly told Herland, "You’re going to hell."
Another activist yelled, "baby killer" repeatedly, and another chanted "all Zionists are racists."
Protesters apparently targeted the site since Mark Regev, former Israeli ambassador to the UK, was a guest speaker at the Song Shul synagogue, which was being held at the Meridian Center in Toronto due to the large crowd expected for the event.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation subsequently pulled Herland off the air and brought him in for a disciplinary hearing with his lawyer on Thursday, the Toronto Sun reported.
CBC refused to tell the Toronto Sun who complained, and Herland refused to comment on the matter on advice from his lawyer. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie... the Sun noted that an anti-Israel group, Canadian for Justice and Peace and the Middle East, had submitted a complaint over Herland for the post.

"My late father was an Austrian Jew who survived the Holocaust in Romania. And came to Canada as a refugee. This year I got an Austrian passport, in case Canada becomes unsafe for me as a Jew. I fear that moment is approaching, here in Canada and elsewhere," Herland wrote.
"Last night the cantor (singer) at the synagogue announced that his nephew was murdered on Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) in Ukraine. In a suspected hate crime. And this morning the Toronto synagogue announced there had been an attack outside a synagogue in Belleville," he stated.
"Jewish Canadians are living in a parallel world. Where police stand guard with guns outside synagogues. And Jewish schools, religious sites and businesses are targeted with bullets. And most Canadians have no awareness or understanding.
"The guest speaker at the Toronto synagogue tonight was an Australian-born university teacher who lives in Israel and once served as Israeli ambassador to the UK. His speech was about making peace in the Middle East. Let’s hope that happens this year," he concluded.
The Sun cited an open letter by Aliza Spiro, described by the Sun as one of the leaders of the Song Shul synagogue, which was sent to CBC, stating that, "holding Paleostinian flags, the protesters had bullhorns and were shouting antisemitic slurs at our people.
"It was incredibly frightening, and many of our members were too scared and intimidated to get out of their cars, simply going home and missing the final powerful service of Yom Kippur night," the letter read.
"Neil Herland’s video recording accurately documented the siege outside our synagogue on this day. His tweets were journalistically accurate, as well as a much-appreciated public service to Canadians. Our country needs more people to similarly shine a light on the terrorizing issue of antisemitism. Our people are scared, and not enough is being done about it," Spiro said.
In Ontario over Yom Kippur, a 29-year-old man opened fire on a police officer stationed outside a synagogue on Sunday evening, triggering a shootout.
The assailant died of his injuries, while the police officer was hospitalized in intensive care.
It comes months after Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that Canada was failing its Jewish community amid a surge in antisemitism.
Carney cited shootings at Jewish schools, Molotov cocktailings of synagogues and attacks on community centers and Jewish-owned businesses. His government announced millions in additional funding to help faith-based institutions pay for security infrastructure, training and personnel.
Synagogues in the Toronto area have also previously been targeted by gunfire. In March, shots damaged the entrances of synagogues in Vaughan and Toronto. No one was injured. Police later arrested three suspects in connection with those shootings.

The soldiers’ testimonies included in "Breaking Ranks" said the war waged in Gaza was marked by relaxed rules of engagement leading to the gratuitous killing of innocents, the use of civilians as human shields and orders to destroy buildings without clear military justification.
The documentary assembled on-camera interviews with serving and former IDF personnel, some speaking publicly for the first time. Their testimony offers a portrait of a military campaign that several participants described as unrestrained and morally disorienting.
Among the most striking claims is that of a tactic dubbed the "mosquito protocol," by which Paleostinians were allegedly forced to walk through Hamas ..one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede,... tunnels wearing a vest equipped with a smartphone that transmitted GPS data to Israeli units above ground.

The documentary’s nomination comes amid the ongoing storm over the Israeli-led film "NAZA," which features interviews with 24 digitally masked Israeli soldiers, mainly intelligence officers, alleging the Israel Defense Forces used AI for Gaza targeting and accepted high numbers of civilian deaths as acceptable collateral damage in the early stages of the war. The IDF has denied the main claims of the film.
"NAZA" won a Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
Unlike NAZA, several of the soldiers in "Breaking Ranks" were interviewed with their faces and names shown.
Other Israel-related films nominated for an International Emmy included Louis Theroux’s "The Settlers," a BBC documentary about Israeli outposts and Jewish ultranationalists in the West Bank.

Ireland’s national team said Saturday it would play its planned soccer match against Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, after "a significant majority" of its players voted to move forward with the game, despite growing pressure to boycott the match.
David Courell, head of the Football Association of Ireland, said that "This morning... a player expressed their discomfort with fulfilling this fixture to the head coach and indicated their intent to withdraw from the squad."
The game in Debrecen is to be Israel’s "home" game against Ireland as part of the Nations League.
The player’s position led to some four hours of deliberations within the team and with management, at the end of which a vote was hold.
"An extensive conversation took place, where ultimately the consensus from the group was to travel to Hungary," Courell said.
The Irish Independent had reported earlier that back-up goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu had indicated that he was not prepared to take part in a soccer match, leading to turmoil in the team.
The deliberations led to delays in the Ireland team’s planned presser.
