August 28th, 1973, at 10:00 AM. Central Stockholm was waking up to a crisp Tuesday morning.
Bicycles sat unlocked by the sidewalks, and children walked to school completely unattended. A man waiting for the metro read the morning newspaper; the headlines only reported minor incidents.
In other words, a criminal incident was the furthest thing from anyone’s mind in the Swedish capital, especially not one that would put the lives of innocent people in danger. So no one found it suspicious when a tall, heavily built man with a large canvas bag walked through the grand doors of the Sveriges Kreditbank.
Even though, to any onlookehis nr, he looked absurd, almost like a theatrical caricature. He wore a gray zippered sweatshirt, a flamboyant women’s wig, and large, blue-tinted sunglasses. A fake mustache was stuck to his lip, and his face was heavily smeared with dark shoe cream, a crude attempt to alter his skin tone and disguise his identity.
Unsurprisingly, this man was not visiting the bank to make a deposit.
Seconds after stepping inside, he dropped the bag, ripped open his sweatshirt, and pulled out a submachine gun, firing a deafening burst straight into the ceiling.
What followed would become the most chaotic six days in modern Swedish history… involving a hostage situation so badly bungled by the police that the captives would end up siding with their captors, against the very people who were supposed to be rescuing them.

It appears that President Donald Trump ...Oh, noze! Not him!... 's administration has replaced many immigration judges with individuals less likely to take illegal alien criminals at their word. TRAC seems extremely upset about the change, but it is great news for Americans, as we can be sure that illegal aliens will have much less of a chance of abusing this loophole in order to obtain U.S. residency.
The Center for Immigration Studies’ (CIS) Andrew R. Arthur explained that the percentage of granted asylum claims is actually even lower than TRAC indicated, because it did not take into account claims that were withdrawn, administratively closed, or not adjudicated. He elucidated in some technical detail what all of those categories meant, but essentially, not every claim ends up going all the way through the process to denial or approval for various reasons.

And why would he?
Turning Point USA was his baby. His creation. His magnum opus. He built it from the bottom up — transforming TPUSA from a teenager's pipe dream into a political juggernaut. Every inch of it reflected his values, passions, and one-of-a-kind personality.
Which is why Charlie intended to lead it ’til his dying day: The only succession plan he ever considered was posthumous.
Tragically, his dying day came far earlier than he deserved.
As we approach the one-year anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s liquidation, Turning Point itself is at a turning point: Three legacies are now in limbo.
The first is Charlie’s.
Complaining about click-whores, liars, cretins, and clout-chasers on social media is a waste of time. It’d be like complaining about nudity in a strip club: That’s kinda-sorta the M.O. when you enter.
But even by social media’s cesspool standards, onlookers were stunned by how quickly Charlie’s murder was exploited. Within days, some of the biggest, most influential podcasters wore Charlie’s corpse like a skin suit, repurposing his legacy for their own agenda.
Once upon a time, Charlie Kirk was just a man. That ended on Sept. 10, 2025.
Today, he’s a symbol.
And symbols have propaganda value. It’s why waving the bloody shirt is so effective.
Symbols are a cheat code for emotional communication. It’s why redefining symbolism has always been a top priority for revolutionaries: It lets them capture hearts — while bypassing brains.
In life, Charlie wasn’t exactly coy with his beliefs:

The sad truth is, Charlie’s image has changed. The propagandists are winning.
For millions of Americans, when they close their eyes and think of Charlie Kirk, their first thought isn’t conservatism, Christianity, or youth politics anymore.
It’s bat[feces]-crazy conspiracy theories, antisemitism, political violence, and Candace Owens.
Symbols aren’t static. They’re constantly moving, constantly changing, perpetually vulnerable to outside forces. And the more powerful the symbol, the bigger the PR payoff in its manipulation.
Which means symbols must be protected. Vigilantly and aggressively.
Look, I get it: Clearly, it’s not the execs at TPUSA’s fault. They’re not the ones who associated Charlie’s image with low-life creeps like Owens and Tucker Carlson. They’re not the ones who hijacked his brand.
If anything, they’re the victims. (Especially, of course, TPUSA’s current chairwoman and CEO.)
But on the other hand, they also haven’t done enough to protect Charlie’s image. Their hearts are in the right place, but PR tactics determine PR success. That’s just how it goes in an outcome-based world.
TPUSA would be wise to recalibrate its PR plan ASAP — because protecting Charlie’s legacy is its responsibility.
Charlie’s earthly mission ended on Sept. 10; an assassin’s bullet made sure of it. But he remains — by far — TPUSA’s most valuable symbol, brand ambassador, and emotional lightning rod. His soul rests in God’s mighty arms, yet his spirit still guides the organization he cherished.
He deserves a better legacy than this.
And so does his successor, Erika Kirk. She assumed the title of chairwoman and CEO — and less than a year later, her metrics are jaw-dropping: TPUSA grew from 410 college chapters to 1,095 (including at James Madison University in Virginia, where my 19-year-old son is an active member). TPUSA exploded from 454 Club America (high school-aged) chapters to 3,102.
The trouble, however, is that it’s unclear how much credit Erika Kirk deserves, since TPUSA’s dramatic growth was triggered by an outpouring of organic love and support after Charlie’s death. Arguably, any CEO at the helm would’ve achieved similar results.
One week after Charlie was killed, 32,000 people contacted TPUSA to join. (That’ll getcha lots of new members.)
Which doesn’t negate Mrs. Kirk’s leadership or courage. She steadied the ship during the darkest, deadliest days, providing clarity, consistency, and continuity. Forged by tragedy, her authenticity spoke for itself.
And she paid a horrific price for it, too.
Since then, she’s been attacked. Ridiculed. Subjected to an absurd list of conspiracy theories.
Her enemies on the left were foreseeable: The same people who hated Charlie now hate her. She inherited her husband’s enemies.
What wasn’t foreseeable was how bitterly she was attacked by Charlie’s so-called friends.
Let’s be clear: Erika Kirk’s tenure as CEO has NOT been a failure — it’s been a monumental, unprecedented success. TPUSA is bigger, more powerful, and more influential than ever before. In just one year, her organization has 4.86 times as many chapters!
But just like symbols change over time, so do a CEO’s responsibilities. Your mission in year one is different than in years two, three, and four. It requires different skill sets — and different visions.
Which is why, for the sake of Erika Kirk’s legacy, Charlie Kirk’s legacy, and Turning Point USA’s legacy, the one-year anniversary of her husband’s assassination would be the ideal time to appoint a new CEO.
There’s nothing wrong with being a transitional CEO. After all, that was one helluva transition: TPUSA’s survival wasn’t guaranteed.
Amidst an unspeakable heartache, Erika preserved her husband’s dream, quadrupled TPUSA’s outreach, and blazed a path for long-term, sustainable growth. She represented the organization with class and dignity.
And because of her success, TPUSA’s challenge has evolved. It’s no longer an organization that needs saving; it’s an organization that needs to expertly manage its dramatic growth — while actively feeding its new membership pipelines.
TPUSA now needs a full-time, hands-on CEO who’s closer to the Charlie Kirk model: a social media maestro, a natural-born showman, and a charismatic dynamo who can mesmerize college audiences.
And that’s not Erika Kirk. She’s a momma with two little babies — and a husband who was stolen from her.
Now grant her the grace to save Charlie’s other legacy, too.
Nick Shirley’s age, moxie, and knack for media attention would make him an intriguing fit (sans the charisma), but in my opinion, the dream candidate for TPUSA’s next CEO is Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Tex.).
He’s only 32. Too young to be president — yet he’s already outgrown his congressional seat. Taking the reins of TPUSA, traveling the country, headlining college events, growing membership, and going viral on social media wouldn’t just elevate Gills’ profile; it would take TPUSA to dazzling new heights.
And it would ensure the legacies of Charlie, Erika, and the organization they love.

In the early morning of September 19, 1941, an oppressive silence descended on Kyiv. The city streets were completely empty, trams stood frozen in the middle of their tracks, the water pipes were out, and the electricity was out. The last regular units of the Red Army were retreating across the bridges to the left bank of the Dnieper.
The horrors of encirclement awaited them: as early as September 14, the enemy had closed the encirclement behind the defenders of the Ukrainian capital and the units that "held" the Dnieper banks north to the mouth of the Desna and south to Kremenchuk. All these days, they had been busy strengthening and expanding the inner and outer "walls" of the encirclement.
All of this was known at the headquarters of the commander of the Southwestern Front, but the Headquarters directive was signed by Chief of the General Staff Boris Shaposhnikov only late in the evening of September 17, 1941. The text was as follows:
"To the Commander of the 37th Army. Due to the current situation on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River in the Kiev area, the General Headquarters authorizes the abandonment of the Kiev Fortified Region and the city of Kiev and a withdrawal to the eastern bank of the Dnieper River, taking over the grouping under the orders of the Commander of the Southwestern Front.
During the retreat, remove and evacuate all weapons from the fortified area. Anything that cannot be removed due to the situation must be destroyed; all bridges over the Dnieper River and other military installations must be blown up."
This decision was frankly belated.
At the headquarters of Major General Andrei Vlasov's 37th Army, who in 1941 was not yet a traitor general but commanded a defensive sector, the order was received at two in the morning. A plan was immediately developed for a gradual withdrawal of troops from the defensive line to the bridges and the left bank.
That same night, the People's Commissar of Internal Affairs of the Ukrainian SSR, Vasily Sergienko, gave the order to urgently prepare the bridges and crossings across the Dnieper, which were guarded by the division's soldiers, for demolition.
The withdrawal was complicated by the enemy's renewed offensive on September 16 on the southern face of the defensive line near the village of Pirogovo. Attacking units of the 75th and 95th Infantry Divisions, along with the 99th Light Infantry Division, which had been transferred the day before to reinforce them, advanced two to three kilometers in two days, capturing Pirogovo, Novosyolki, Myshelovka, and Zhukov Island.
A large group of Soviet troops—1,650 soldiers and commanders—was blocked at the latter point. They surrendered to the Slovak motorized division advancing in the second echelon on September 19.
The Germans were desperate to break through to Kyiv's southern bridges: the Darnitsky railway bridge and the Navodnitsky road bridge. They needed to use some force, doomed to destruction and capture, to hold off the enemy in order to conduct a retreat.
On September 18, the Germans launched another offensive. They only managed to advance through the Goloseevsky Forest, approaching the approaches to the Lysogorsky Fort, protected by powerful barbed wire entanglements. This was a powerful stronghold, blocking the route to the southern bridges of Kyiv.
During September 18, the units and formations defending Kyiv received orders to withdraw unnoticed at nightfall, having first destroyed all equipment that could not be evacuated.
Second Secretary's Gold
On the night of September 19, the retreating regular units were covered by units of militia, police, NKVD, and other armed groups, mostly formed from local residents, who would later manage to dissolve into the civilian population.
Apparently, this is precisely the reason for the death of Timofey Shamrylo, the second secretary of the Kyiv City Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Ukraine. He was supposed to remain in occupied Kyiv to lead the underground, but then disappeared. Rumors circulated in Kyiv throughout the post-war period about Shamrylo's gold, which he had left behind for the needs of the underground and hidden somewhere.

Some said that the party functionary ended up in Gestapo cells, and that the subsequent destruction of the underground was connected with this; others said that Shamrylo had defected to the Germans.
In 2011, Kyiv searchers found the remains of Shamrylo and 127 other Red Army soldiers and commanders near the village of Hatne in the Kyivo-Svyatoshinsky district. Here, on September 18 and 19, militias fought to cover the retreat of our troops.
Apparently, the party leader and member of the city's Defense Headquarters went to the front lines to support the Komsomol youth fighting there – and died.
"Farewell, Motherland! 1941"
Most of the line of contact ran in front of the pillboxes of the Kyiv Fortified Area, which were defended by three separate machine-gun battalions. Their commanders received orders to blow up the fortified firing positions and retreat. But there was nothing to blow up the pillboxes with—there were no explosives there except grenades.
Therefore, the garrisons were simply transported out or carried out if horse-drawn transport was unavailable. They carried machine guns, ammunition, and personal weapons, assembled at designated points, and then retreated in battalion columns to designated bridges.
The last remaining crews in position fired, simulating the presence of large forces in position.
On the night of September 18-19, the glow of fires blazed here and there over the city. In their light, accompanied by artillery fire and the rattle of machine guns, columns of retreating soldiers made their way toward Kyiv's bridges.
On the railway bridges: Petrovsky, located north of the city, and Darnitsky (Struve), in its southern part, sappers covered the rails with boards.
They also constructed makeshift temporary ramps, and vehicles used them to climb onto bridges and cross to the east bank. But even this solution couldn't completely eliminate the traffic jams.
The morning of September 19th dawned. The Germans launched an offensive, which now had to be held back only by a small force of soldiers, practically deprived of artillery support.
From the left bank, some batteries were attacking the advancing enemy, but communications had already been disrupted, and there was no one to direct their fire. Some units panicked, and in some places the enemy managed to break through.
In one of the posterns of the Lysogorsk fort, where militiamen from the Kirovsky district (modern-day Pechersky) fought against the infantry of the enemy's 95th Division, the Germans captured 319 prisoners. Even today, an inscription has been discovered on one of the bricks:
"There were three of us. We stood to the death. Farewell, Motherland. '41."
Gaidar was the last to leave.
The Germans completely captured the Lysohirsky fort on the morning of the 19th. The 95th Infantry Division stormed the Pechersk Citadel of the old Kyiv Fortress (now the site of the Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II) and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
At one o'clock in the afternoon, advance units of the 296th Infantry Division entered the monastery grounds from the north. Soon, the Germans approached the bridges, and explosions began.
The sappers first blew up the southernmost Darnitsky railway bridge. The continuous stream of people, carts, and vehicles flowing toward it was redirected to the Navodnitsky Bridge.
Military engineer A. A. Finkelstein, who was responsible for its detonation, waited until the last moment. A detachment from the pontoon regiment defending the bridgehead had already entered the battle, and enemy motorcyclists had already flown ashore and opened fire on the retreating troops.
Finally, rockets shot into the sky, and the bridge deck burst into flames. Panic broke out among those who hadn't managed to cross. Many jumped into the water. Horses reared. The last defenders of the bridgehead ran across the burning planks, followed by German machine gunners.
The sappers waited until the last of our soldiers reached the left bank and blew up the bridge, which was thrown down from the piers by the explosion.
The next to explode was the northernmost railway bridge, named after Petrovsky. The last to collapse, at 4:00 PM, were the spans of the Evgenia Bosh Bridge. Writer and war correspondent Arkady Gaidar participated in its explosion —he was one of the last to leave Kyiv. Sappers simply dismantled the pontoon bridges.
Maximum possible damage to the enemy
At the same time as the bridges, objects in the city began to explode - the KRES, the water pumping station, the telegraph, the radio center, the railway station and many others.
The sky was clouded with smoke from the fires. From the left bank, it seemed as if all of Podil was ablaze. The city's last defenders—NKVD soldiers from the 57th Railway Regiment and the 34th and 81st Separate Industrial Protection Battalions—crossed the Dnieper in boats. Covering the army's retreat, they lost up to two companies.
But the 299th Infantry Division broke the fighting on the approaches of the militias of the Stalinsky and Zheleznodorozhny districts in the villages of Kryukovshchina and Sofievskaya Borshagovka only by evening.
On the northern face of the Kyiv fortified area's defense, garrisons of the separate machine-gun battalion that occupied the pillboxes remained, which the Germans were forced to storm until late in the evening.
This slowed the enemy advance and allowed the withdrawal of most of the troops. By the end of September 19, the Germans had occupied the entire right-bank part of Kyiv. The only district on the left bank remaining Soviet at that time was Darnitsky District.
On September 20, 1941, another explosion rocked the city. At the Pechersk Lavra, a retaining wall and the "View" observation deck of the so-called Upper Lavra were blown away.
An entire group of German officers perished, including Colonel Hans-Heinrich von Seydlitz und Golau, commander of the 29th Army Corps' artillery department. He was posthumously promoted to general.
This loss had a depressing effect on the German command, but the main impressions from the occupation of the mother of Russian cities were still to come.
In September 1941, reports from Army Groups South and Center headquarters to Berlin declared the capture of Kyiv an unqualified success. However, judging by later memoirs, German military leaders did not view this operation as a strategic success. From July to September 1941, excessively significant Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe forces were tied down near Kiev, and the pace of the offensive clearly slowed.
Modern historians believe that this two-month "bogged-down" of the Germans near Kiev gave our command a head start to prepare the defense of Moscow. The tactical defeat essentially nullified the plans for the blitzkrieg, which seemed close to being realized in the summer of 1941. The first, catastrophic phase of the war was over.

Russians on Friday began three days of voting in the country’s first wartime parliamentary election, which features virtually no opposition and is all but certain to secure the Kremlin’s political dominance.
Authorities spread the election over the weekend, ending Sunday, in a bid to boost turnout among the 111 million eligible voters, and they even allowed electronic balloting. Turnout was about 30% as of late Friday, including online voting, according to the Central Election Commission.
The Kremlin wants the parliamentary election — the first since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 — to underline public support for the war and give a veneer of legitimacy to its action. It has sought to avoid any political risks by stamping out even the slightest sign of dissent.
“Your choice and resolve will once again demonstrate that millions of people stand behind our fighters, that we are a united people, bound by shared values, historical memory, and love for the Motherland,” President Vladimir Putin told the nation before the vote.
The main Kremlin party, United Russia, is all but assured to retain its overwhelming control of the lower house, the State Duma. Several smaller parties of the “systemic opposition” that vote in sync with the government on all key issues also are expected to retain their presence.
Voters cast two separate ballots, filling half of the Duma’s 450 seats by selecting political parties listed on the ballot. The rest are contested in single-seat constituencies, with voters choosing individual candidates.
RUSSIA HAS SILENCED ANTI-WAR VOICES
The liberal Yabloko party, the only registered political entity that dared to criticize the war, was removed from the ballot last month by Russia’s Supreme Court, and only has a few dozen candidates in the single-constituency races. Additionally, some anti-war politicians have been imprisoned or forced to flee abroad ahead of the campaign.
The election follows a summer of Ukraine’s long-range drone strikes on oil refineries that triggered a widespread fuel crisis. Warehouses belonging to online retailers Wildberries and Ozon also were attacked. The damage has exacerbated problems for the Russian economy and brought the war home for millions.
In Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi, polling stations were briefly closed because of a threat of a drone attack, local officials said. One polling station in the Krasnodar region had to be set up in a different venue after a drone shattered windows there, said Central Election Commission head Ella Pamfilova.
For the first time, the parliamentary election includes residents of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow illegally annexed after the war began, but still doesn’t fully control. Voting also is taking place in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
[AT] This week the U.S. entered into an agreement with both Denmark and Greenland which protects U.S. sovereignty, deters Russian and Chinese aggression, circles an increasingly fey and unreliable Canada with U.S. states and bases, and makes the U.S. exit from a sclerotic NATO more possible, if not more likely.
First, a little background. Contrary to the press and jokesters who ridiculed President Trump’s offer to buy Greenland, a territory of Denmark with about 56,000 inhabitants, we have long known its strategic importance. In 1951, we entered into an agreement with Denmark allowing us to establish a base at Thule. Article XIV of that Treaty states that "This Agreement, being in implementation of the North Atlantic Treaty, shall remain in effect for the duration of the North Atlantic Treaty." If we left NATO or it otherwise ceased to exist, we had no clear right to maintain defenses there. Nor did we have exclusive rights to ban foreign investments which posed security threats to us. In time, the treaty was inadequate to protect our interests, as Russia now had ICBMs, and Russian nuclear submarines were navigating Arctic waters. Moreover, the small population of Greenland was talking about independence, and Russian and Chinese governments were not averse to bribing them substantially in exchange for operating rights there. Our agreement was with Denmark, and it’s unclear it could bind an independent Greenland.
It could even mean an independent Greenland strongly under Chinese influence might be on the other side of the negotiating table.
In sum, for a number of reasons, that dated Cold War-era treaty needed to be supplanted by something better, and better is what we got. This week’s agreement, which cost us nothing, guarantees forever "the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend "our security and that of Greenland."

Hundreds of Iranian truck drivers are currently stuck at Iran’s border with Pakistain, unable to send their goods into Tehran’s neighbor. They say they are facing worsening bureaucratic hurdles and costs, many caused by their own government. Tons of stranded apricots have been spoiled because of the delays. Lucrative cargoes of iron ore, cement and bottled gas are stuck at entry points to the Pak and Afghan borders, truckers say.
"Neither Iran is taking responsibility for the situation, nor is Pakistain allowing us to unload our cargo," one driver says in a video posted by the Union of Truckers and Drivers Organizations Across Iran over the weekend.
The economic war in the Persian Gulf is dictated as much by how much the countries in the region can move their exports over land rather than through the Strait of Hormuz. Some have found workarounds. Saudi Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula, largely made up of sand and oil rigs. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual haj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Formerly dictatorial and steeped in Olde Tyme Religion, deferring to Salafist holy men on all issues, it has now done a 180 and is making a serious effort to modernize, so as not to be left in the sand by its Gulf Arab neighbors. The holy men have been shoved to the background and the nation is now still dictatorial but somewhat rational. That doesn't make them trustworthy, but it's a start... is moving more of its oil west across the Arabian Peninsula. The U.S. Navy is helping some of the Gulf nations shift their oil through the strait.
Iran’s attempts are faltering. The U.S. is isolating its economy with new sanctions and launching strikes on Iranian tankers in reprisal for Tehran’s attacks on its Navy, collapsing seaborne exports.
In another setback for Iran’s plans to bypass Hormuz, the country’s Mahan Air, which is sanctioned by the U.S., said Wednesday that it was suspending flights to Oman and Turkey, state-affiliated media in Tehran said. Last week, the U.S. Treasury imposed new sanctions on companies it said were supporting Mahan, which operates cargo and passenger services.
The U.S. blockade has also hurt Iran’s imports of basic goods, 70% of which normally go through the blockaded ports. Though humanitarian goods and food are ostensibly exempt, the reality is that shippers are reluctant to service Iran.
Videos posted on social media last week show cranes at the Port of Shahid Rajaee, Iran’s largest commercial container port, at a standstill. Thousands of containers are stranded in ports in Pakistain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, transportation professionals in Tehran last month told the Mehr News Agency ...And if you can't believe Mehr News Agency who can you believe?... , which is affiliated with Iranian security services.
Iran has tried to compensate by pushing more trade through other routes. Transits across the Caspian Sea have grown by 70% in the past five months, according to Iranian officials. Iran imports large quantities of its wheat, corn and cooking oil from Russia, according to commodities data provider Kpler and Iranian trading websites.
"We are trying to turn this threat into an opportunity," Hadi Haghshenas, the governor of the Iranian province of Gilan, on the Caspian Sea, told state news agency IRNA in late August.
A freight railroad from Tehran to Xi’an in eastern China has jumped from once-a-week journeys to every three or four days since the blockade started, according to the state-controlled Tehran Times. Iran imports industrial machinery, electronics and automotive spare parts from China.
But in a sign of how vulnerable the alternative routes are, Iraq over the weekend temporarily closed cargo terminals at the Iran border after alleging Iran had used its territory to attack Saudi Arabia. On Sunday, trucks carrying Iranian onions bound for Iraq were forced to turn back as a result, according to Tehran’s Central Fruit and Vegetable Market.
Iran’s land borders were a mess before these latest closures, though. This summer, for example, the number of trucks going through Pishin, one of the main crossings into Pakistain, increased from about 40 vehicles to as many as 130 vehicles a day, local governor Rahimbakhsh Balidehei told the semiofficial ISNA News Agency. The result is that customs officers across Iran’s land borders are struggling to cope, Ehsan Malekzadeh, chairman of the Iranian International Transport Companies Association, told the Mehr News Agency.
People gathered at the Iraq-Iran border after the Shalamsheh border crossing was closed.
Malekzadeh said 3,700 trucks were stranded on the Iranian side of the crossing to Turkey, with delays reaching 20 days. At the main crossing into Pakistain, 700 trucks—mostly carrying bottled gas and cement—are waiting at any time, but only 40 are allowed to cross, according to the Baloch Human Rights Documentation Network, a local civic group.
One driver told Iran’s official news agency IRNA he was stuck for days at the Pakistain side of the border with meat destined for Iran, where prices are spiraling higher. At the border with Afghanistan, truckers also complain they have to wait for days before being able to export Iranian iron ore, according to Iran’s Truckers’ Union.
Iranian truckers trying to get into Pakistain say they can be stuck for several days without access to water, food or sanitation as temperatures rise to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, according to footage, published by the Truckers’ Union on its social-media account. The union said some bottled-gas tankers are crossing into Pakistain. But the Pak authorities asked Iranian drivers for the equivalent of more than $10,000 each to cross, an unprecedented amount, it said. A front man for Pakistain’s Foreign Ministry said he wasn’t aware of any new charges or restrictions at Pakistain’s border with Iran.

One businessman complained it was increasingly difficult to bring in automotive spare parts from the Asian powerhouse.
The rising costs are now adding to Iran’s worsening inflation problem.
In some cases, the overland bottlenecks and diversions now contribute as much as a third of the price for common goods once they reach Tehran, Mohammad Reza Khodarahm, an import-sector expert, told Iranian economic daily Donya-e-Eqtesad last week. Majidreza Hariri, the president of the Iran-China Chamber of Commerce, earlier predicted that the U.S. naval blockade would cost $18 billion a year in extra outlays. The cost of transporting one container from China to Iran costs $12,000 via land routes compared with $3,000 by sea, he told KhabarOnline, an independent website close to regime moderates.
Much of these costs are being passed on to consumers, with unpredictable results for the Iranian leadership. Food inflation rose to 128% in August, according to Iran’s official statistics office.

[Reason-VolokhConspiracy] The phenomenon became impossible to dismiss as a collection of unrelated incidents in June. Twenty-four governments, including the United States, Britannia, Canada, Australia, Germany and Sweden, jointly condemned "lethal plotting and other malign actions" by Iran's IRGC Intelligence Organization, Quds Force and Ministry of Intelligence. They specifically identified "Jewish and Israeli communities and interests" among Iran's targets and noted the Iranian security services' longstanding relationship with international and small-time Mister Big groups.

Sweden provides an early example. In January 2024, a live grenade was discovered at the Israeli embassy in Stockholm. That May, Sweden's security service announced that Iran was using Swedish criminal networks to commit violent mostly peaceful acts, including against Jewish and Israeli targets. The United States subsequently sanctioned Sweden's notorious Foxtrot criminal network for allegedly carrying out the embassy attack on Iran's behalf.
The story has continued. This week Sweden expelled an Iranian diplomat and summoned Iran's ambassador over evidence of Iranian efforts to threaten Jewish and Israeli interests, as well as Iranian dissidents, in Sweden.
Iran's actions in Australia have been even more dramatic. A kosher restaurant in Sydney, Lewis' Continental Kitchen, was set on fire in October 2024. Two months later, Melbourne's Adass Israel Synagogue was Molotov cocktailed.
After an extensive investigation, Australia's domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, concluded that the Iranian government had directed both attacks and likely additional attacks as well. Australia expelled Iran's ambassador, and subsequently designated the IRGC a state sponsor of terrorism.
According to Australian authorities, Iran deliberately used intermediaries to conceal its involvement. The objective was not merely to damage Jewish institutions, but also to frighten Australian Jews and exacerbate divisions within Australian society.
The United States has uncovered its own plots. Federal prosecutors alleged in 2024 that an IRGC asset, Farhad Shakeri, had been instructed to surveil two Jewish Americans in New York, with $500,000 offered for the murder of either.
Then came an even more remarkable case this year. Prosecutors allege that Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi, an Iraqi national associated with the Iranian-backed Kata'ib Hezbollah and the IRGC, supplied an undercover operative with photographs and locations of a prominent New York synagogue and Jewish institutions in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Arizona. He allegedly discussed whether the New York synagogue should be bombed or set on fire. The attacks were never carried out.
Germany and Britannia have confronted similar activity. German authorities uncovered alleged Iranian surveillance of the German-Israeli Society and the office of Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. Another suspect allegedly sought weapons for attacks on Jewish targets.
British authorities, meanwhile, uncovered hostile surveillance of such targets as the Israeli Embassy, Bevis Marks Synagogue, the JW3 Jewish community center and the Community Security Trust.
Then, in 2026, Britannia experienced a succession of actual attacks claimed by an obscure organization called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI), or the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right. Targets included four Jewish-community Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green, synagogues and other Jewish institutions. In April, two Jewish men were seriously maimed in a stabbing.
Britannia eventually sanctioned HAYI as an Iran-linked organization, noting that it had grabbed credit for seven attacks against British locations associated with Jewish and Israeli communities and Persian-language media.
HAYI's activities extended well beyond Britannia. It claimed attacks against Jewish targets elsewhere in Europe, while U.S. prosecutors allege that al-Saadi participated in its activities on behalf of Kata'ib Hezbollah and the IRGC. Among the incidents described by the Justice Department was the April 2026 burning of a synagogue in Skopje, North Macedonia. Prosecutors say al-Saadi subsequently distributed HAYI video of the burning.
Canada presents a somewhat murkier picture. Canadian intelligence has warned that Iran uses organized-crime proxies and has disrupted Iranian plots. A Canadian intelligence assessment reported by Global News reportedly concluded that Iranian intelligence may be using Canadian criminal organizations to target Jews. U.S. authorities also allege that al-Saadi's network planned attacks in Canada.
Thus, amid the much broader increase in antisemitic violence since October 7, Western authorities have identified something more specific: a multinational Iranian and Iranian-proxy campaign targeting Jews and Jewish institutions, often using small-time Mister Bigs and other intermediaries to obscure who is ultimately responsible.
One disturbing aspect is that the target countries' response has been relatively restrained: an expelled diplomat here, a sanctioned entity there. Should the Iranian government's attempt to murder these countries' citizens demand a stronger response?
