Danab forces also destroyed the targeted sites, which authorities said had been used to support the group’s activities in the area.
The operation was aimed at disrupting al-Shabaab’s movements and strengthening security in communities across Bay, the military said.
The Somali government has continued to rely on Danab commandos, an elite force trained and supported by international partners, in operations against al-Shabaab, the country’s most powerful Islamist hard boy group.
The military did not provide further details about the identity of the surrendered hard boy or say whether there were casualties during the operation.
The reported operation comes as Somali government forces continue efforts to regain territory from al-Shabaab and disrupt the group’s ability to organise attacks and maintain supply routes.
Bay is one of the regions where al-Shabaab has maintained a presence and has carried out attacks against government forces and civilians.

Air platforms of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have eliminated about 38 suspected terrorists in a series of precision air strikes conducted against terrorist concentrations in Borno State.
The coordinated strikes, involving multipe Operation Hadin Kai’s precision strike Air Platforms, were conducted after intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions identified movements of suspected terrorists in separate locations.
The operations were carried out between the night of August 21 and the early hours of August 22, 2026, as part of intensified efforts to dismantle terrorist formations and disrupt their freedom of movement in the North-East.
According to sources, an armed reconnaissance platform was operating over Aduwa, at about 10:23 p.m. on August 21, when it received intelligence on the presence of terrorist vehicles and fighters in the area.
The platform conducted surveillance of the location and subsequently tracked suspected terrorists to a settlement where a group of about eight fighters had gathered in one location, while several other groups were observed in different positions.
Following appropriate operational procedures and authorisation, the platform conducted a precision strike against the larger concentration.
Battle Damage Assessment indicated that the strike hit the intended target, with suspected terrorists inside makeshift structures and others outside the huts eliminated. The initial strike was assessed to have neutralised approximately 16 terrorists.
The operation did not end with the first strike. At about midnight, the precision platform continued surveillance of the area and tracked approximately 10 terrorists who had fled from the initial strike location and regrouped near a tree.
The aircraft subsequently conducted another strike on the fleeing group. Subsequent battle damage assessment indicated that the weapon struck the intended target.
No movement was observed around the strike location, leading the military to assess that the 10 terrorists were neutralised. The combined precision strike operations therefore accounted for approximately 26 terrorists.
In a separate operation, another precision strike platform conducted a strike against suspected terrorists after tracking a group of about 12 fighters to a hut around Buratai. The platform maintained surveillance over the target before receiving the necessary authorisation to engage.
At about 12:31 a.m. on August 22, the attack platform conducted the strike, achieving a direct hit on the identified target. The engagement was assessed to have neutralised all 12 suspected terrorists gathered at the location.
Troops of Combat Intelligence Battalion VII have recovered 320 rustled cattle following an operation against suspected terrorists in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The operation was conducted at about 9:00 a.m. on August 20, 2026, after troops deployed at Forward Operating Base Bachakka received credible human intelligence on the movement of suspected terrorists with rustled cattle from Makera village.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the troops immediately mobilised to intercept the suspects and made contact with the group while they were moving the cattle.
The troops engaged the suspected terrorists, forcing them to abandon the livestock and flee towards the Niger Republic border.
The troops subsequently recovered a total of 320 cattle from the area.
The recovered livestock were handed over to the Sarkin Bachakka for further action and identification of their rightful owners.
The operation highlights the role of timely human intelligence and rapid military response in disrupting terrorist logistics and recovering livestock stolen from local communities.
Security forces are expected to sustain patrols and intelligence operations along the Gudu axis and border corridors to prevent terrorists from using the area for cattle rustling, movement of fighters and other criminal activities.

Anxiety has reportedly spread through the leadership of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) following the elimination of a senior commander identified as WAL-GEGE by the Nigerian Air Force Component of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) around the Gargash axis of Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that WAL-GEGE was eliminated while riding a motorcycle along the main route near the terrorists’ Markaz, close to the Gargash hideout.
The strike, according to the sources, was conducted as part of ongoing intelligence-led air operations aimed at disrupting the movement and leadership structure of ISWAP elements operating around the Dikwa axis.
Sources said the elimination has generated concern within the terrorist group, particularly because the commander was reportedly moving through an area considered to be under the group’s control.
The incident has reportedly triggered an internal investigation among ISWAP elements, with members accusing unidentified insiders of leaking information about the commander’s movement to the military.
According to intelligence gathered by Zagazola Makama, the terrorists have become increasingly suspicious of information leaks within their ranks and are reportedly reviewing their communication and movement procedures following the strike.
The sources said the development has also prompted ISWAP elements to consider restricting the use of mobile phones among field commanders and fighters for fear that their movements could be detected through communications or other intelligence capabilities.
The reaction reflects the growing pressure on the terrorist group as Nigerian security forces intensify surveillance and precision operations against its commanders, logistics networks and hideouts across the Lake Chad Basin.
WAL-GEGE’s elimination is particularly significant because the loss of senior field commanders can disrupt the coordination of fighters, movement of logistics and execution of attacks.
Military operations in the Dikwa axis have increasingly focused on identifying terrorist concentrations and disrupting their freedom of movement before they can launch attacks against troops or vulnerable communities.
The development also highlights the importance of intelligence gathering in the counter-insurgency campaign.

Between July 1 and Aug. 13, Ukraine hit approximately 220 vessels in the Sea of Azov and Black Sea with drones, according to The Guardian. Russia has upped its attacks on Ukrainian ports, killing at least 26 mariners since July with strikes on commercial vessels.
The Turkish vessel RMS TEAM caught fire after a drone attack in the Black Sea. Turkish shipping company Akkon Lines reported this on August 22.
As a result of the incident, one crew member went missing, the remaining 11 were able to leave the ship.
"Search and rescue services have received notification of a missing crew member," the company said in a statement, as quoted by TASS.
After the crew evacuated, a fire broke out in the vessel's living quarters and engine room, which subsequently spread to the container storage areas. The company added that the vessel and its cargo could be considered a total loss.
On August 3, the Ro-Ro vessel Nadezhda, en route from the port of Novorossiysk to Samsun, was attacked by drones approximately 20 nautical miles (approximately 37 km) off the coast of Novorossiysk. There were 22 crew members on board, 13 of whom were Turkish citizens. The crew was later evacuated to a Russian port.
University of Cincinnati Students for Justice in Palestine Chapter Announces It Faces Suspension
[AmericanIsraelite] The University of Cincinnati (UC) chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) announced on July 12 that it is facing disciplinary action over its April 21 protest of an on-campus event focused on the Abraham Accords. The chapter is now soliciting testimony and video to fight the sanction through the website of YUSRA, a Cincinnati nonprofit co-founded by the same non-student activist who led the chants that day.
SJP states that UC alleges the chapter failed to register the protest, ignored an official’s request to lower its megaphone, disrupted the conference with noise, and obstructed an entrance. SJP denies all four, arguing outdoor gatherings under 5,000 people don’t require registration, that the volume request was never a formal directive, and that attendees reported no delays getting in or out. The chapter calls the sanction retaliation against its majority Arab and Muslim board.
The allegations stem from the final day of “Shifting Paradigms, New Horizons: The Abraham Accords, U.S.–Israel Relations, and the Future of the Middle East,” a three-day conference hosted by UC and supported by the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati, Academic Engagement Network and AJC Cincinnati. Organized under the leadership of UC history professor Mark Raider, the conference brought together diplomats, scholars and public officials to examine the Abraham Accords and the future of regional diplomacy.
On the conference’s final day, 100 to 150 protesters gathered outside, after spending the morning outside a UC Board of Trustees meeting. They initially assembled yards from the conference entrance with signs, speakers and a microphone.
Roughly 15 to 20 protesters then tried to register as attendees. After discussion of who could legally be excluded, students were let in and nonstudents turned back. Several who entered told organizers they hadn’t yet formed opinions on the conflict; none acknowledged opposing the event.
Once inside, students photographed attendees and made eye contact with a man outside conferring with protest leadership through the windows. As former Israeli Justice Minister Yossi Beilin began speaking, demonstrators outside moved closer to the glass doors – while inside, protesters stood one after another to interrupt over roughly 20 minutes.
Each time police escorted an interrupter from the auditorium, the crowd gathered around the building’s exits cheered. The first attendees to leave were escorted out as protesters shouted expletives and threats; the rest were held out of sight until officers had cleared the exits.
The April 21 demonstration was driven and largely attended by outside activists rather than UC’s own students. Laila Shaikh, a 2025 graduate who founded the campus SJP chapter, appeared to direct the disruption while wearing a “Long Live the Intifada” shirt. Shouting through a megaphone loud enough to be heard indoors, she led activists in a chant calling for Zionists’ deaths: “Free Palestine until all the Zionists are f**ing dead.” Shaikh has since co-founded a local nonprofit, YUSRA, with a former CAIR Ohio executive. SJP’s campaign to fight the suspension links directly to YUSRA’s website, where the group has posted a pre-drafted email template along with contact information for the Board of Trustees, the Provost’s Office and the President’s Office.
Shaikh wasn’t the only outside voice. Northern Kentucky activist Mohammad Ahmad, a regular at Norse SJP and Northern Kentucky 4 Palestine events, told the crowd, “How many more videos of Israeli terrorists filming themselves blowing up an entire house, killing an entire family of Palestinians, sniping babies for target practice, carpet bombing an entire concentration camp, looting homes and destroying them like my grandfather’s cousin’s house, desecrating Masjid Al Aqsa, persecuting Christians…we will not stop until UC is fully divested from Zionism. And until the Zionist project in Palestine collapses, which is inevitable and will happen within our lifetime.”
A banner reading “The screams of Palestinian mothers will haunt us,” displayed at the April 21 protest, had appeared a year earlier at a Fort Thomas demonstration organized by Northern Kentucky for Palestine. The April 21 protest announcement was also published collaboratively on Instagram by SJP UC, Northern Kentucky for Palestine, Cincinnati Socialists, Cincinnati Palestine Solidarity Coalition and UC Young Democratic Socialists of America – four of which are non-student activist groups.
Mamdani taps Israel-hating, anti-cop radicals for NYC school board
[NYPost] Mayor Zohran Mamdani has inserted radical anti-police and anti-Israel members to the Panel for Education Policy, including one who is pushing public schools to have segreagated racism-reflection rooms, The Post has learned.
Among Mamdani’s 13 picks for the agency is race-obsessed former Department of Education official Lucas Koehler, head of the $500 million endowment for the Foundation for City College. Koehler — who is white — pushed his agency to “dismantle white dominant culture” and supported segregated spaces in city classrooms for non-white educators to reflect on their purported anti-black racism. Koehler, who worked for the DOE from 2014-2022, also called on the agency to sever all ties with the NYPD and said that cops pose a “threat” to minority students, as part of the letter he signed on to.
Another radical anti-cop pick for the board is Raysa S. Rodriguez, who heads the Citizens Committee for Children, a group that has repeatedly called to defund the police.
Another pick Mamdani placed on the board is Brooklyn College and CUNY Graduate Center alum Dr. Madeline “Maddy” Fox, who signed a letter accusing Israel of genocide and denying the existence of widespread antisemitism on college campuses.
“There is no rampant crisis of antisemitism on our campuses, despite prolonged attempts by the current administration to persuade the public that there is one,” read the 2025 letter, signed by Jewish faculty at CUNY, Berkley and Georgetown. The letter went on to accuse the Trump administration of “Islamaphobia” for its attempts to combat antisemitism.
The PEP’s 24-member board approves contracts for the Department of Education — which boasts a $45 billion budget, sets policies and manages school closures.

Trump administration defends freeze on $2.2 billion of Harvard research funding as ACLU-led coalition backs university on appeal

The appeal stems from the administration’s April 2025 decision to freeze billions in federal research grants after demanding reforms at Harvard involving campus anti-Semitism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, admissions, hiring, governance, and student discipline. Harvard subsequently filed suit challenging the decision.
An April 11 letter from the administration said federal support “is not an entitlement” and called on Harvard to eliminate DEI programs, audit departments for viewpoint diversity and anti-Semitism, adopt merit-based hiring and admissions practices, strengthen disciplinary procedures, and implement a campus mask ban.

Parents at US high school sue over field trip that pushed students to wear hijabs

Portugal: Portugal Seeks Criminal Probe of Antisemitic Campaign at University of Coimbra That Forced Israeli Student to Abandon PhD: The formal request was also sent to Portugal’s Central Department of Criminal Investigation and Prosecution and prosecutors in Coimbra. Possible offenses it listed included discrimination, incitement to hatred and violence, public glorification of a terrorist organization, threats, and bodily harm, spanning several university faculties between July 2024 and May 2026. The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) first reported on Harel’s case in the summer of 2025, after he documented swastikas, Hezbollah flags, and pro-Hamas imagery across Coimbra. The Saturday strike in Deir al-Balah killed Sharif al-Hasanat, whom the IDF identified as a company commander in the terror group’s Deir al-Balah battalion. The military said Hasanat had spent much of the war helping restore Hamas’s underground infrastructure and had recently continued efforts to advance attacks against Israeli troops and civilians.
"Throughout the war, the terrorist led efforts to restore the underground infrastructure of the Hamas terror organization," the IDF said, adding that Hasanat had posed an "immediate threat to our forces and was eliminated." The military indicated it viewed that threat as justifying the strike despite the general ceasefire in Gaza.
The announcement came a day after the IDF said another Hamas operative, Sobhi Sami Mahmoud Shahtot, had been killed in a Wednesday strike in Nuseirat, also in central Gaza. The military identified Shahtot as a platoon commander in Hamas’s military wing who invaded Israel during the terror group’s October 7, 2023, onslaught.
According to the IDF, Shahtot "took part in holding numerous hostages in Hamas captivity during the war" and was seen participating in Hamas hostage-release ceremonies in November 2023.
The IDF justified the attack by saying he had recently been advancing attacks against Israeli troops and civilians and was killed "to remove the threat."
INCIDENTS ALONG THE YELLOW LINE
The military also reported two separate confrontations along the "Yellow Line" on Friday. The line divides the Strip between areas controlled by the IDF and those under Hamas control under the current ceasefire arrangements. As drawn by mediators, it encompasses 53% of the Gaza Strip, most of it outside urban areas. The IDF, however, does not physically hold all of that territory, with many of the army’s positions located closer to the Israeli border.
In southern Gaza, Givati Brigade troops shot a Paleostinian who crossed the line and approached Israeli forces in a manner the military said posed an immediate threat. The IDF described the man as a terrorist and said troops opened fire to "neutralize" him and remove the threat.
Later Friday, troops from the 99th Division operating in central Gaza spotted what the army identified as a Hamas operative armed with a knife approaching the Yellow Line. Soldiers monitored the man after he crossed into the Israeli-held portion of the Strip and then detained him, the IDF said. He was taken to Israel for questioning.
KITES FLOWN FROM GAZA LAND IN SOUTHERN ISRAEL
Across the border, four kites with strings stretching for kilometers were located in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, a civilian kibbutz in the Gaza Envelope. The army said the kites were not carrying anything suspicious and did not pose a threat.
Their purpose was not immediately clear, nor was it known who had sent them or why they had strings with a length no ordinary kite would have.
Hebrew media reports said the military assesses that Hamas was behind the kites, and was testing Israel’s response.
In 2018, Paleostinian bully boyz regularly launched kites carrying incendiary devices at Israeli border communities, setting fire to wide swaths of land.
HAMAS TIGHTENING GRIP
The weekend military activity also came as Israel accused Hamas of tightening its grip on Gaza’s civilian population as it seeks to retain control of the enclave.
In a joint statement Thursday, the IDF and Shin Bet alleged that Hamas has been using Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis to interrogate and torture Paleostinians as it faced what Israeli authorities described as an "erosion of support" in Gaza. The military said Hamas had stepped up the activities of its internal security apparatus and was seeking to maintain control through "intimidation, interrogations and torture of residents."
According to Israeli intelligence cited in the statement, Hamas internal security and military intelligence personnel were conducting interrogations on the second floor of the hospital’s outpatient-clinic building.
The IDF and Shin Bet also alleged that Hamas was using parts of the hospital complex for governance, interrogations and collecting money, as well as using a former hospital office building converted into a place of worship as another interrogation center.
The military said masked Hamas operatives maintained a regular presence in areas of the hospital compound and that the use of the medical facility created fear among patients and staff.
Israel has long accused Hamas and other Paleostinian terror groups of exploiting hospitals and other protected civilian sites for military purposes. Israeli hostages have also said they were held at Nasser Hospital.
Earlier in 2026, Doctors Without Borders suspended noncritical medical activities at Nasser Hospital because of the presence of gunnies there. The previous year, a doctor who also served as a Nasser Hospital front man hinted that Paleostinian Islamic Jihad ...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah... had threatened him after he refused to allow its operatives to use the facility.

[Rudaw] Several Syrian security forces personnel were maimed Saturday when an bomb struck a bus carrying them northeast of Damascus, state media reported, with no group claiming responsibility for the incident security officials have described as a "terrorist attack."
"Several internal security forces personnel were maimed Saturday when an bomb detonated on a bus on the Maarouneh - Tal road in Rif Dimashq [province]," the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said.
The Agency quoted a "security source" as stating that "the relevant authorities are following up on the circumstances surrounding the incident, while investigations continue to identify the perpetrators" of what he described as "a terrorist act."
While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, Rudaw's Damascus correspondent Solin Mohammedamin, citing security sources and media reports, noted that "more than 20 security personnel were aboard the bus when it was targeted, and that the maimed were transferred to military hospitals in the capital."
The attack comes weeks after an bomb targeted a public minibus in the Jaramana suburb southeast of Damascus in early August, wounding 14 people, several of them critically, according to the Syrian health ministry.
The Jaramana attack raised particular alarm given the area's profile as a multi-ethnic suburb with a predominantly Christian and Druze population, located on the outskirts of the capital.
The incidents come as part of a series of security breaches that have struck Syria's capital in recent months.
At least one person was killed and 31 others injured in early July when two blasts hit central Damascus. Officials then said bombs were planted minutes before detonating, targeting the security cordon around French President Emmanuel Macron, who had been in Damascus on an official visit.
A week earlier, a bomb packed with shrapnel tore through a cafe in central Damascus, killing nine people and wounding 20 others, Syria's interior ministry said.
The incidents reflect the broader security challenges facing the new leadership in Damascus since the December 2024 ouster of longtime dictator Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs... The deadliest since Assad's fall came in late June 2025, when a jacket wallah struck the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus during Sunday services, killing at least 25 people and injuring more than 60. [Rudaw] Syria on Saturday condemned what it described as an Israeli drone strike on a vehicle southwest of Damascus that left “a number of civilian casualties.” The latest attack comes days after Israel struck an airbase northwest of the country, amid reports of rehabilitation efforts at the facility purportedly backed by Turkey.
Syria "condemns in the strongest terms" Israel's drone strike on "a civilian vehicle on the Mazraat Beit Jinn - Beit Jinn road in the western part of Rif Dimashq [province], which resulted in a number of civilian casualties," Damascus’ foreign ministry said in a statement.
"This attack constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and a blatant breach of international law," the ministry said, censuring what it called "repeated Israeli aggressions against Syrian territory."
Damascus held Tel Aviv "fully responsible for the consequences" of the attacks, warning that their continuation "will further escalate tensions and instability in the region and endanger the security and safety of civilians."
It further urged the international community and the UN Security Council "to assume their legal and political responsibilities, work to halt these attacks, and put an end to Israel's repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty.”
The incident comes days after Syria on Tuesday deplored “Israeli airstrikes targeting Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in Idlib province," Damascus foreign ministry said in a previous statement, calling the strikes an "unjustified act of aggression.”
The statement said "the continuation of these Israeli attacks" since the late December 2024 ouster of longtime Syrian president Bashar al-Assad aims to "undermine" Syria's efforts to "consolidate stability and avoid escalation," accusing Israel of attempting to "drag the region towards further tension and instability."
Earlier on Tuesday, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which relies on a network of sources inside Syria, reported that the strikes came amid "ongoing Turkish rehabilitation work inside the facility," pointing to a recent visit by "a Turkish military delegation" to "inspect the ongoing rehabilitation work."
The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out an airstrike in southwest Syria on Saturday afternoon, adding it targeted an operative “who advanced terror attacks in the final stages of preparation.”
The military indicated the man was targeting troops situated in southern Syria, and his activity “posed an immediate threat to our forces.”
Syrian media reported that the strike in Beit Jinn injured one person. It did not report any deaths. The town is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Israeli border.
