[Just The News] Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Thursday charged five non-citizens with illegally voting in the 2024 elections in the Wolverine State.
"In my office, we’ve always taken election crimes seriously, and prosecute attacks on our voting systems to the fullest extent of the law," she said in a statement. "We’re upholding election integrity by investigating all claims of non-citizen voters, as rare as they are, and holding bad actors accountable when they refuse to abide by the laws that keep our elections safe and secure."
"These charges reflect the severity of the allegations, the sanctity of our democracy, and the tremendous consequences of voting illegally— whether that’s done to try and "test" security measures or to make an unlawful vote count," Nessel added.
Those charged include the five non-citizens who allegedly voted and a U.S. citizen who allegedly registered her non-citizen spouse to vote, The Detroit News reported.
Michigan was one of the states at the center of President Donald Trump's claims that election fraud affected the outcome of the 2020 election.
Democrats, for their part, have insisted that non-citizen voting is statistically rare.
Out of 350 million people, sure. But it is starting to look like this statistically rare phenomenon been enough to tip local elections. And given that the fixes are easy and inexpensive — clean up the voter rolls as half the states are in the process of doing, mandatory photo ID, voting on election day only, in-person voting with few exceptions and paper ballots — no reason to delay or refuse implementation.
[Daily Signal] A federal judge ruled that Shenandoah County must once again change the names of two schools it had returned to their original names in 2024.
The schools had been named Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby-Lee Elementary School until the names were changed in 2020 to Mountain View High School and Honey Run Elementary School.
After new school board members were elected two years ago, the board voted 5-1 to restore the original names, but it refused to publicly explain the motives behind the change. Four students and the Virginia NAACP sued the district, launching the federal case.
U.S. District Judge Michael Urbanski wrote a 141-page decision that concluded that the 2024 change violated the rights black students have under the 14th Amendment as well as the Equal Educational Opportunities Act.
"The Confederate names were restored with complete awareness of their historic legacy and ongoing discriminatory impact. In the court’s view, the affirmative act of reinstating these vestiges of segregation is far more problematic than a passive failure to remove a long-standing name or symbol," he wrote.
The judge took pains to write that his ruling is based on the unique history of Shenandoah County and that it therefore doesn’t apply to other schools in Virginia that are named for Confederates.
Education Week reported that as of March, there are 17 such schools in the Commonwealth. Urbanski specifically cited Virginia’s policy of Massive Resistance. It began in 1956 after the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board decision desegregated schools. "From the voluminous record in this case, the court can readily trace the connection between the Confederate names and the de jure system of segregation," he wrote.
For example, there was no high school for black students in the entire county until the 1960s. "They were required to take buses several miles and hours away in order to attend segregated high schools administered by neighboring school districts—experiencing higher barriers to participation in extracurricular activities and athletics than their White peers," Urbanski wrote.

I used to enjoy watching roller derby. But the thing is, the people in roller derby never expected to attract the same crowds and make the same profits as the NBA. It was held in smaller arenas and the TV coverage was always local. I guess we didn't have ESPN in those days.

The high court announced it will consider arguments in seven cases during the month of November as justices prepare to begin the upcoming judicial term.

On Nov. 10, justices on the high court will hear arguments in Department of Labor v. Sun Valley Orchards, a case that will determine whether federal agencies are able to oversee disputes over migrant farmworkers in the United States.
The case focuses on a New Jersey farm that was accused of violating an employment agreement under the H-2A visa program, a federally administered system that allows immigrant agricultural workers to serve in temporary or seasonal jobs.
The U.S. Department of Labor accused Sun Valley Orchards of failing to provide adequate housing, meal plans, transportation and work hours for employees on H-2A visas. The Labor Department charged the farm hundreds of thousands of dollars in liabilities for the alleged violations.
"Administrative adjudications provide an efficient mechanism for ensuring that employers who participate in that vast program comply with those terms and conditions," the lawyers for the government wrote in a brief to the court.

The election is a novelty with a record 34 candidates, including Howling Laud Hope of The Official Monster Raving Loony Party and Marcus White from the Everyone is God Party. They have pounded the streets of Clacton over the past few weeks as they seek to win the support of around 80,000 voters.
Given the number of candidates, Clacton residents will be presented with a ballot paper around a meter long (three feet). That’s not going to be easy to navigate.
Turnout is widely expected to be low, as it often is in special elections. In the July 2024 general election, Farage faced eight rivals and garnered 21,225 votes, or 46.2% of the total. Turnout was 58.7%.
When he stood down on July 7, Farage described the scrutiny of his finances as an "establishment hit job" and a media-driven "witch-hunt."
His decision to stand down put a pause to the parliamentary investigation, but if he wins on Thursday, as most pollsters expect, it is set to start again.
If he’s found to have breached Parliament’s rules, then he could face a recall petition in Clacton, which may lead to another special election later this year, costing the British taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds more. The difference is that in that one, the other parties would choose to put up candidates.
Farage’s decision came weeks after Andy Burnham returned to Parliament in a special election in the Makerfield constituency near Manchester.
Joke candidates are a long-standing and cherished tradition in British elections so long as they meet the rules and pay the deposit of 500 pounds ($675) required of all those standing. They only get it back if they muster 5% of the votes cast. In his most recent run, against Burnham in Makerfield, the 5,000-year-old Binface got 95 votes, or 0.2% of the total.
There is an expectation that he will do a lot better in Clacton. Many of the voters of the other political parties have been lending him their support, partly in the hope of embarrassing Farage.
Given the number of candidates, the result is not expected until breakfast time on Friday.

Harvard allegedly failed to adequately safeguard research collaborations with Chinese institutions, including universities tied to Beijing’s military and defense-industrial base, according to a report from the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
Researchers affiliated with the New England Ivy League co-authored more than 140 publications with other researchers affiliated with a group of Chinese universities, according to the report reviewed by Fox News Digital ahead of its public release.
The "Seven Sons of National Defense" are a group of Chinese universities identified by the Pentagon and other U.S. officials as central to China’s defense research and military modernization efforts. The House Committee created to crackdown on China argues that Harvard’s approach to research security opened the door for collaborations that could advance technological and military capabilities of the hostile nation.
Harvard also reportedly received more than $600 million from China under the federal Section 117 foreign-gift disclosure system — more than any other American university, according to the Education Department dashboard cited in the report. The committee argues the U.S. university's financial ties to China heighten the need for strict oversight of its research partnerships and foreign-funding disclosures.
The stakes in the latest report extend far beyond Harvard. U.S. officials have warned for years that China uses academic partnerships and access to Western research to advance CCP strategic capabilities in military, surveillance and other areas.
The House Select Committee on China argues that universities receiving U.S. taxpayer funding must do more than meet the narrowest legal requirements when collaborating with institutions embedded in China’s military research system, particularly when it comes to technology with potential defense or military uses.
The report highlights a 2023 paper on bio-inspired soft robots for deep-sea exploration co-authored by a Harvard-affiliated researcher and a researcher from Beihang University, one of the Seven Sons institutions. Beihang, also known as Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, has appeared on the Commerce Department’s Entity List since 2001.
The committee report argues the work examined in the paper has potential military applications, including underwater detection, while Harvard’s research-compliance office characterized the project as nonmilitary research.
Harvard researchers also co-authored a 2023 paper with a researcher at China’s National University of Defense Technology, another institution on a U.S. restricted list, according to the report. That study involved magnetic materials and acknowledged partial support from the U.S. Army Research Office.
The committee said it reviewed publications spanning dozens of disciplines and found that engineering accounted for the largest share of Harvard-affiliated research involving Seven Sons institutions.
"From allowing violence against anti-China protestors to collaborating with entities linked to the PLA, Harvard has made serious mistakes and must act now to prevent more. It should use this investigation as a catalyst for significant reforms that end CCP influence on campus and prioritize secure American research," Committee Chairman Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., said in a statement.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Harvard said it "shares the Committees’ concern about geopolitical risks, including threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party, and is committed to continuing to conduct research and academic programming with protections that prioritize U.S. interests and national security."
"Harvard follows national security standards and guidance set by the federal government for its international collaborations," a university spokesperson said. "Additionally, where appropriate, federal agencies who are best able to assess real-time national security risks work with Harvard to put in place agency approved risk mitigation measures for federally funded research."
"Harvard disagrees with mischaracterizations that fail to reflect the University’s documented record of compliance, cooperation, and commitment to protecting and advancing U.S. interests, national security, and global standing," the spokesperson continued.
The report also examines Harvard’s executive education program with China’s National Healthcare Security Administration, which trained Chinese health officials on international health-insurance systems.
According to the report, attendance and registration records show officials affiliated with the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, or XPCC, were listed in connection with some sessions. The Treasury Department sanctioned XPCC in 2020 over human-rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang.
The report acknowledges it is unclear whether XPCC officials ultimately attended every program in question.
It alleges, however, that Harvard had advance participant information for a 2020 online session that included XPCC-affiliated officials and did not take further action.
Harvard professor Winnie Yip, who helped organize the executive education program, told committee investigators she did not know XPCC was a sanctioned entity at the time and had not received training on sanctions compliance, according to the report.
The report further alleges Harvard’s research-security practices focused too narrowly on technical legal compliance and failed to account for broader national-security risks posed by work with Chinese military-linked institutions.
It cites testimony from a Harvard research official, who said the university evaluates research collaborations case by case and does not prohibit all work involving robotics or Chinese institutions. The committee criticized that approach, arguing research with entities embedded in China’s military-civil fusion system can have military applications even when the research is unclassified and intended for publication.
The committee's report also raises questions about Harvard Global Research and Support Services, a nonprofit affiliated with the university that can accept awards when Harvard is unable to accept a sponsor’s terms directly. The panel alleges the entity could be used to circumvent federal foreign-gift reporting requirements, an allegation Harvard will likely dispute.
The report recommends that Harvard prohibit research relationships with entities on U.S. government restricted or sanctioned lists and centralize its research-security oversight. It also urges Congress to strengthen foreign-funding disclosure requirements for universities.

[France24] A Texas oil company that wants to extract what could amount to billions of barrels of oil from East Greenland’s Arctic basin has crossed a red line before even starting to drill.
In a statement issued on July 30, Greenland’s mineral resources authority said it had become aware that Greenland Energy – a Texas oil company founded last year – had transferred drilling equipment ashore on a remote stretch of the island’s eastern coast.
“All future logistical matters must be advised and approved by the mineral resources authority – before they are carried out,” the government said.
Greenland Energy has claimed that $1 trillion in crude oil may lie beneath the Jameson Land region. The firm thus announced plans to spend $60 million drilling two exploratory wells to find out.
Greenland Energy’s chairman and a significant shareholder, Larry Swets, "appears to enjoy access to Trump’s circle", The Guardian reported. Swets has said the oil project is “not related to American annexation”. Carol Craig, a US navy veteran involved with Trump's Golden Dome missile-defence plan for Greenland, reportedly sits on the company's board.

Ross Perot was a conservative. He said he was from Texas. So was George H.W. Bush, up for reelection in 1992 against Bill Clinton. What did Perot do? He ran a third-party ticket. He was angry at the Bushes. He felt they were not correct on some conservative issues, debt and other things. And he succeeded in ensuring that Bill Clinton, a Democrat, would win the election with less than 50% of the vote.
He did it again in 1996. He may have had an effect even on that election when Bob Dole lost the election, but Bill Clinton, once again, didn’t win 50% of the vote, given the 10% that Ross Perot won.
And of course, most famously in 2000, Al Gore ran against George W. Bush. It was a very close election. It was contested in Florida. And as you remember, after the vote was counted and George W. Bush won, Al Gore contested it. He lost that vote. But the margin was almost minuscule in Florida, which determined the entire election.
You could argue that the 1% or 2% of the vote that third-party candidate Ralph Nader got ensured that Gore lost that election.
