[Just The News] he FBI has opened an investigation into possible leaks of classified information by Democrats or their staffs on the Senate Intelligence Committee, spurred in part by a criminal referral from the National Security Agency concerning the release of one of its overseas intercepts, sources told Just the News.
The NSA made the referral last summer concerning reports, including one in The New York Times, earlier that year during Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s confirmation process that quoted information from an intercept of two Hezbollah terrorist figures who claimed Gabbard, during a 2017 trip to Syria, had met with the "big guy."
The Times suggested the reference was taken by some to mean Gabbard had met with a top Hezbollah terrorist leader, a claim she adamantly denied.
NSA concluded the leak accurately contained information from one of its intercepts but that Gabbard had not in fact met with Hezbollah leaders.
The spy agency identified potential leakers among Senate Intelligence Committee Democrat staff who had access to the intercept prior to the Times report, sources said.
The referral languished inside the Justice Department for months — with top leaders unaware of the concerns — until FBI Director Kash Patel was alerted to the existence of the referral a few weeks ago.
Since then, FBI counterintelligence and criminal agents have ramped up their probe and expanded to other potential leaks and media contacts tied to the committee’s Democrats, sources said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party was facing heavy losses as results began to come in from local elections across the country on Friday morning, while the far-right Reform UK party surged and the far-left, anti-Israel Green Party registered gains.
Most results from the election on Thursday were expected to come in later on the following day. But as of early Friday morning, Labour had already lost control of five local councils out of 25 that had declared results, and lost more than 100 seats in total.
The anti-immigrant Reform, meanwhile, had gained nearly 200 seats across the local councils.
The Greens had more modest gains as of Friday morning, picking up 12 seats by 5 a.m. local time (7 a.m. Israel time), according to The Telegraph.
Labour’s losses were set to heap more pressure on beleaguered Prime Minister Keir Starmer and showcase the rise of the hard-right and left-wing populist parties, both of which face accusations of antisemitism and bigotry at a time when Jews in the UK are under increasing threat.
The result could amplify calls for Starmer, 63, to resign or finally face a long-rumored party leadership challenge.
"The picture has been pretty much as bad as anyone expected for Labour, or worse," said John Curtice, Britannia’s most respected pollster.
The elections for 136 local councils in England, alongside the devolved parliaments in Scotland and Wales, represent the most significant test of public opinion before the next general election due in 2029.
Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, and the Greens, led by self-described eco-populist Zack Polanski, who is Jewish, are expected to be the main beneficiaries of widespread disillusionment.
Farage hailed the preliminary results, saying the elections were "exceeding anything that I thought."
"I think what you’re witnessing is an historic change in British politics. Forget Left-Right, there is no more Left-Right. It is gone, it is out of the window, it’s finished," he told news hounds, according to The Telegraph.
The Green Party has surged in recent polls, as its leader focused much of his campaign on opposition to Israel and accused Starmer of being on a "Zionist" payroll.
Last week, Polanski faced backlash — and later apologized — after retweeting a post that criticized police for the manner in which they subdued an attacker who had just stabbed and seriously maimed two Jewish men in an antisemitic attack in London.
This week, UK media reported that the Green party was investigating more than 30 local council candidates for alleged antisemitism, including at least ten who downplayed or justified violence against Jews.
While the party said that some candidates have already been suspended, it dismissed the problematic members as only a small minority of those running.

President Donald Trump warned nearly a year ago that the District of Columbia may have been reporting "fake crime numbers" when he deployed the National Guard to the nation’s capital.
Now, the Metropolitan Police Department is embroiled in scandal, as 13 officers have been placed on leave, with some already undergoing termination, according to MPD Interim Chief Jeffrey Carroll, as an ongoing probe into alleged manipulation of statistics unfolds.
"Our Internal Affairs Bureau has completed an investigation into crime reporting," Carroll said. The MPD did not immediately respond to a Tuesday request for comment. "This investigation was reported — it was referred to us earlier this year from the United States Attorney's Office."
Senior officials, including an assistant chief and district commander, are among those being scrutinized, according to reports.
Trump received heavy blowback from District officials and Democratic lawmakers for dispatching the Guard to the area after declaring on Truth Social that "DC gave fake crime numbers in order to create a false illusion of safety."
Trump claimed that until the Guard arrived, Washington was the least safe city in the U.S. "and perhaps the world."
On Wednesday, the White House responded to the contrast, telling Fox News Digital, "President Trump was right – crime in Washington DC was a serious problem before he took bold action to establish a task force to make the city safe and beautiful again."
"Now, crime rates have dropped dramatically, dangerous criminals have been removed from the streets, and the city’s true grandeur is being restored. Democrats should learn an important lesson from this, instead of instinctively attacking the President and his great ideas, they should work with him to deliver for the American people." said White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson.
Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for further comment, while House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer took credit for the developments leading up to the suspensions.
"These terminations are a direct result of the Oversight Committee’s work exposing dangerous efforts by DC Police leaders to artificially lower crime rates," Comer, R-Ky., said in a statement.
Meanwhile, several Democrats, including those in the District, have lambasted Trump for his actions.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., slammed the White House in August, saying the president’s use of federal law enforcement within her city is a "disproportionate overreaction" and "offensive."
