An ongoing investigation into child sexual exploitation material led to the arrests of 27 crew members aboard several cruise ships in San Diego, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said.
News of the incidents emerged on Tuesday when a video taken on April 23 appeared to show federal agents placing crew members in a van in the B Street Pier parking lot. Some of the workers were from a Disney cruise that had just docked, according to an eyewitness who had just disembarked from the ship.
The operations took place from April 23 to April 27. The CBP spokesperson said that, after boarding eight vessels, agents interviewed 28 individuals and determined that all but one were allegedly involved in "either the receipt, possession, transportation, distribution, or viewing of (child sexual exploitation material) or child pornography."
Officials said that 26 of the crew members interviewed were from the Philippines, while one was from Portugal and another from Indonesia.
CBP canceled the visas of those allegedly involved and deported the suspects to their countries of citizenship, the spokesperson said. No further details about the federal investigation were provided.
"We have a zero-tolerance policy for this type of behavior and fully cooperated with law enforcement," a Disney spokesperson said Thursday in a statement. "While the majority of these individuals were not from our cruise line, those who were are no longer with the company."
CBP did not identify the cruise ships. Other arrested crew members were reportedly from a Holland America Line ship. On Tuesday, the company referred questions to CBP.
Some community organizations sought information from federal officials, as the incidents were initially believed to be related to immigration enforcement. Adriana Jasso of the American Friends Service Committee in San Diego said that after learning about the arrests, they contacted CBP and the cruise companies but did not receive a response. She said that they are asking the federal agency to provide more information about the investigation.
The Harbor Police Department released a statement on Tuesday stating that they were not involved in the reported enforcement actions and had not received any calls for service related to the incidents.
"The B Street Cruise Terminal is a federal port of entry, where law enforcement authority for immigration and customs matters rests with U.S. Customs and Border Protection," the statement reads in part. "As such, any enforcement actions taken onboard vessels or within the federal inspection area fall under CBP’s jurisdiction."

Mohammed Sabry Soliman, 46, entered the pleas on Thursday to dozens of felony counts, including first-degree murder under two definitions of the offense, each carrying a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The American military’s Central Command confirmed overnight that it had carried out "self-defense" strikes in Iran in response to "unprovoked Iranian attacks" against US Navy missile destroyers that transited the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman. Iran has been blocking the Strait, a key pathway for the global oil supply, since the beginning of the US-Israeli war with the Islamic Theocratic Republic in late February.
Iran’s top joint military command, meanwhile, accused the US of violating the ceasefire by targeting an Iranian oil tanker and another ship, and of carrying out air attacks on civilian areas on Qeshm Island in the strait and on nearby coastal areas of Bandar Khamir Sirik on the mainland.
Iran’s military said it responded by attacking US military vessels east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of the port of Chabahar. A spokesperson for the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the strikes inflicted "significant damage."
The US military, however, said it intercepted the "inbound threats," and "no US assets were struck."

Speaking to ABC, Trump sought to downplay the flare-up. "It’s just a love tap," Trump told the news hound, according to her social media post. Iranian state media said after the strikes that the situation was back to normal.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that the American destroyers were not damaged but "great damage was done to Iranian attackers." He threatened Iran with further attacks unless it quickly agreed to a deal in ongoing talks with the US.
The renewed hostilities broke out as Washington was awaiting Iran’s response to a US proposal that would stop the fighting but leave the most contentious issues, such as Iran’s nuclear program, unresolved for now. Tehran said it had not yet reached a conclusion on the emerging plan.
"A normal country would have allowed these destroyers to pass, but Iran is not a normal country. They are led by LUNATICS, and if they had the chance to use a nuclear weapon, they would do it, without question," Trump wrote. "But they’ll never have that opportunity and, just like we knocked them out again today, we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violent mostly peacefully, in the future, if they don’t get their deal signed, FAST!"
The two sides have occasionally exchanged gunfire since the ceasefire took effect on April 8.
In the most recent clash, CENTCOM said Iran had used missiles, drones and small boats, which targeted three Navy destroyers. The US said it targeted missile and drone sites and other locations in response.
"CENTCOM does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces," the statement added.
Iran’s Press TV later reported that following several hours of fire, "the situation on Iranian islands and coastal cities by the Strait of Hormuz is back to normal now."
On Monday, the US military had said it destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted Iranian cruise missiles and drones as Tehran sought to thwart a US naval effort to open shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Monday also saw Iran target the UAE with missile fire.

According to a Fox News news hound, those restrictions came as Gulf countries were angry that US officials had downplayed the strikes on the UAE.
"The strike on one of Iran’s oil ports comes two days after Iran fired 15 ballistic and cruise missiles at UAE Fujairah Port, eliciting anger from Gulf countries after top Pentagon leaders said Tuesday that the Iranian strikes did not rise to the level of breaking the ceasefire, calling it low-level attacks that didn’t rise to that level," Fox’s Jennifer Griffin posted on X.
But the restrictions have since been lifted, potentially paving the way for the effort to open the strait to begin afresh in the coming days, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing US and Saudi officials.
Separately, the US imposed sanctions on Thursday on Iraq’s deputy oil minister and three militia leaders over what it said was their support for Iran.
A Chinese-owned oil tanker came under attack near the Strait of Hormuz for the first time since the U.S.-Iran conflict began on Thursday.
A report from Chinese media stated that the unnamed vessel was marked "CHINA OWNER & CREW." The ship's deck caught fire from the attack and it remains unclear whether any of its crew were injured.
This was the first time a Chinese oil tanker has been attacked, a person with knowledge of the matter told Chinese outlet Caixin.
China remains a key buyer of Iranian oil, which has been targeted by a US blockade in the Gulf of Oman.

Given that China and Iran are supposedly buddies, this might be a sign that Command & Control is a bit weak, lacking both the command and control parts.

China hasn't done much to back Iran up during this spat, and Iran may be miffed. They may have attacked the Chinese ship to send a message - help us or we'll no longer protect you and yours. Iran IS that stupid. China is the stronger horse here, and can go elsewhere for oil. May have to pay more, but they're not the one being choked.

I’m under the impression that the only other source for cut-price oil is Russia, but Russian pipelines are not well-oriented to deliver a large volume of the stuff. So China has to pay full proce exactly at the moment when their economy is faltering.
