Fresh intelligence emerging from insurgent enclaves in Borno State suggests an escalation of deadly clashes between Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), with both factions locked in violent confrontations deep inside the Sambisa Forest and surrounding areas.

Somali pirates have seized an oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen, in a dramatic escalation of maritime insecurity in one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors, according to multiple Somali security officials.
The Yemeni Coast Guard has located the oil tanker M/T EUREKA, which was hijacked off the country's coast. The agency's press service reported this on May 2.
As part of the search and rescue operation to locate the tanker, two patrol boats were dispatched from Aden, as well as small patrol boats from Shabwa. In addition, cooperation was established with international partners and local authorities in the Gulf of Aden.
Thanks to the Coast Guard's prompt action, the vessel's precise coordinates were determined. Efforts are currently underway to recover it.

Piracy was rampant off the coast of Somalia in the 2000s, peaking in 2011 with hundreds of attacks, but was significantly reduced by international naval deployments and new tactics by commercial shipping.
But in recent weeks attacks have increased again, according to a report by the European Union naval mission deployed off the shores of the troubled east African country.
Operation Atalanta, the EU’s naval force for Somalia, monitored three attacks in late April, according to its information service, the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO).
Since February 28, shipping in the region has also been disrupted by the US-Israeli war against Iran, but there is no immediate indication that today’s hijacking is linked to the conflict.
