[FoxNews] 43 suspects arrested in coordinated raids targeting murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking and extortion
Federal authorities on Thursday announced a sweeping takedown of suspected Mexican Mafia members and associates in Southern California. They charged 43 defendants in a wide-ranging case involving murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking and extortion for allegedly turning Orange County into a "Gangsta's Paradise."
The suspects were arrested in coordinated raids, and others already in custody are expected to face federal charges in the coming weeks, according to prosecutors.
Investigators say the case pulls back the curtain on how the notorious "La Eme" prison gang allegedly continued to run street-level crime from inside prison walls, using contraband cellphones and encrypted messaging to direct violence and drug operations on the outside.
"Gang members who murder, extort, kidnap and traffic drugs are a menace to our communities and our way of life," First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said, pointing to what officials described as a sustained effort to dismantle organized crime both inside prisons and on the streets.
At the center of the case is alleged gang leader Luis "Pops" Cardenas, who prosecutors say oversaw operations in Orange County from prison, issuing orders to trusted associates, including Jaime "Junior" Alvarado, Karina Cesena and Mario "Happy" Flores.
Those associates are accused of carrying out kidnappings, assaults and drug trafficking and overseeing stash locations, gang-controlled motels and illegal gambling operations tied to the enterprise.
In one case outlined by prosecutors, two men allegedly killed a victim at an Anaheim motel in 2025 in an effort to gain status within the gang. Both defendants could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.
The indictment also alleges gang members kidnapped and assaulted individuals who fell out of favor, including a 2025 attack tied to a gambling operation in Stanton.
FBI Director Kash Patel described the organization as a "ruthless criminal enterprise" that operated across prison walls and neighborhood streets.
"These defendants allegedly ran a criminal network that murdered, kidnapped, extorted and flooded our communities with deadly drugs," Patel said. "The FBI will never stop working alongside our law enforcement partners to hold these individuals accountable and protect the people of California."
During the investigation, authorities seized large quantities of narcotics and weapons, including nearly nine pounds of fentanyl, roughly 120 pounds of methamphetamine, as well as heroin, cocaine and 25 guns.

A U.S. Army soldier involved in the daring operation and capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been arrested on charges of allegedly using classified information to place a bet on the deposed leader's removal from office, a move that won him more than $400,000, authorities said.
Gannon Ken Van Dyke, 38, allegedly wagered more than $33,000 on Polymarket, an online prediction market where bettors can wage money on everything from sports matches and economic indicators to political outcomes, the Justice Department said Thursday.
He was charged with three counts of violating the Commodity Exchange Act, one count of wire fraud and one count of an unlawful monetary transaction.
Van Dyke also faces insider trading charges by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Today’s announcement makes clear no one is above the law, and this FBI will do whatever it takes to defend the homeland and safeguard our nation’s secrets," FBI Director Kash Patel said. "Any clearance holders thinking of cashing in their access and knowledge for personal gain will be held accountable."
The bets netted Van Dyke nearly $410,000. In total, he made 13 bets from Dec. 27, 2025, through the evening of Jan. 2, just hours before the operation to capture Maduro commenced.
Van Dyke allegedly sent most of his winnings to a foreign cryptocurrency vault before depositing them into a newly created online brokerage account, federal prosecutors said.
In a post Thursday on X, Polymarket noted it published enhanced rules in March to combat insider trading.
"When we identified a user trading on classified government information, we referred the matter to the DOJ & cooperated with their investigation," the post states. "Insider trading has no place on Polymarket. Today's arrest is proof the system works."
Van Dyke, who was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, had signed nondisclosure agreements in which he promised to "never divulge, publish, or reveal by writing, words, conduct, or otherwise ... any classified or sensitive information" relating to military operations, according to the DOJ.
Beginning around Dec. 8, 2025, through Jan. 6, Van Dyke was involved in the planning and execution of "Operation Absolute Resolve," the military mission to capture Maduro, whom federal prosecutors allege leads a drug cartel.
Amid the plans for the operation, Van Dyke had consistent access to classified intelligence.
"Our men and women in uniform are trusted with classified information in order to accomplish their mission as safely and effectively as possible and are prohibited from using this highly sensitive information for personal financial gain," acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said.
"Widespread access to prediction markets is a relatively new phenomenon, but federal laws protecting national security information fully apply."
Around Dec. 26, 2025, Van Dyke allegedly created a Polymarket account, funded it and began trading on Venezuela-related markets.
Some of those contracts tracked the likelihood of U.S. forces entering Venezuela by certain dates, the probability of Maduro being removed from power and the likelihood of President Donald Trump invoking the War Powers Act against Venezuela, the DOJ said.
On the day of the operation, Van Dyke allegedly withdrew the majority of his winnings.

I know it isn't exactly how military courts work, but if I could I'd have the jury of his peers - those who found themselves on the shooty side of the operation - decide the verdict; so long as it isn't this global shadow law op going after marquee soldiers.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI under Operation Desert Sanity IV have conducted clearance operations in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State following intelligence reports of a suspected ISWAP camp in the area.
Security sources said the operation was carried out on April 23 at about 8:00 a.m. by troops of 5 Brigade, comprising 75 personnel supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), operating with Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and gun trucks.
The troops were deployed to Boada village, located about nine kilometres east of Damasak, following credible intelligence of insurgent activity.
According to the sources, the troops also cleared and exploited surrounding areas including Gudusuri and Yelo villages.
No contact was made with terrorists during the operation.

The two container ships seized by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz have been taken toward the port of Bandar Abbas along the key waterway, a report said Thursday.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed on Wednesday that the vessels, identified as the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas, were operating without proper authorization and had tampered with navigation systems, accusations that could not be independently verified.
"Some 20 Iranians armed to the teeth stormed the ship. Sailors are under Iranians' control, their movements on the ship are limited, but the Iranians are treating them well," a relative of a captive onboard one of the ships told Reuters on Thursday in relation to one of the seizures.
The news outlet cited sources as saying that both ships — which are managed by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) — were taken toward Bandar Abbas, with a combined 40 crew onboard.
"The ship is anchored nine nautical miles from the Iranian coast. Negotiations between MSC and Iran are ongoing, our sailors are fine," Filip Radulovic, Montenegro's minister of maritime affairs, was quoted by Reuters as telling state television there.
Before their seizure on Wednesday, the ships reported coming under fire near the strait, underscoring the increasingly volatile conditions in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
The situation is unfolding after U.S. forces recently seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman as it was approaching Iranian waters Sunday.
That vessel, the Touska, remains in U.S. custody as American forces continue inspecting what maritime security sources told Reuters is likely "dual-use" cargo — materials that can serve both civilian and military purposes — following a voyage from Asia.
The U.S. military is also continuing to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports on Thursday.
So far, U.S. forces have redirected 33 vessels since the start of the blockade against Iran, U.S. Central Command said Thursday.
