"Our stockpiles of defensive and offensive weapons allow us to sustain this campaign as long as we need to," Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said at U.S. Central Command headquarters on Thursday.
From a tactical perspective, the scale of the airstrikes unleashed in Operation Epic Fury indicates that the U.S. almost waited too long. Starting the campaign to take out Iran’s ballistic missiles and drones required strikes on almost 2,000 aimpoints in just the first few days. That’s one munition per aimpoint, and there could be thousands more to go.
It was now or never. Iran planned to stockpile missiles and drones and build a handful of nuclear weapons that no military force could reach. "Iranian negotiators said to us directly, with no shame, that they controlled 460 kilograms of 60% and they’re aware that that could make 11 nuclear bombs," U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said Tuesday.
The terrifying scale of Iran’s target set went unnoticed by most of the world until last Saturday.
Imagine how difficult this job would have been in a few years — especially with Russia and China helping Iran restock.
"This operation needed to happen because Iran, in about a year or a year and a half, would cross the line of immunity, meaning they would have so many short-range missiles, so many drones that no one could do anything about it because they could hold the whole world hostage," Rubio said on Capitol Hill on Monday. "Look at the damage they’re doing now. And this is a weakened Iran … imagine a year from now," he added.
With Iran’s command and control degraded and air defenses flattened, the southern air ingress approaches to the country are wide open. "And now, with complete control of the skies, we will be using 500-pound, 1,000-pound and 2,000-pound GPS--and laser-guided precision gravity bombs, of which we have a nearly unlimited stockpile," Hegseth said at the Pentagon on Wednesday.
Here come the big bombs to take on hundreds of targets. Those targets include factories, weapons storage sites and every IRGC facility U.S. forces can find. And it’s all happening while a 2,000-mile arc of aerial defense continues.
The U.S. is not running out of bombs for Operation Epic Fury. Here are seven systems seeing heavy action:
Joint Direct Attack Munition: JDAMs use GPS satellite guidance to hit precise coordinates. The combat-proven JDAM family of munitions is actually a kit. You take a Mk 82 500-pound free-fall gravity bomb, a Mk 83 1,000-pound bomb body or a Mk 84 2,000-pound bomb body, then attach a precision seeker and a tail kit with steering fins just before missions. Military munitions specialists — sometimes called AMMO troops — build the bombs before loading them onto the aircraft. In the Navy, for example, you can spot ordnance loaders on an aircraft carrier deck by their red jerseys. In 2003, U.S. fighter and bomber crews dropped 5,086 of the 2,000-pound GBU-31 JDAMs in Operation Iraqi Freedom. So yes, planners knew to stock up. A new wing kit doubled the range for the JDAM Extended Range variant. JDAMs can attack "off-axis," meaning behind or to the side of the fighter or bomber.
GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb: Combining precision with powerful explosives, the Small Diameter Bomb weighs 250 pounds and has a remarkable 40-nautical-mile range when launched, along with the ability to strike moving vehicles. The bomb body is advanced, with a more powerful but compact explosive that limits collateral damage. Aircrews can change coordinates in flight for this GPS-guided munition. F-22 Raptors can drop SDBs while flying supersonic.
Patriot and THAAD: U.S. forces are leading the defense against missile and drone threats. Patriot remains the gold standard for terminal-phase intercepts, and Hegseth noted inventories were in good shape. THAAD — Terminal High Altitude Area Defense — is also widely used.
Air-to-air missiles: For drones, there are many options, starting with fighter aircraft armed with AMRAAMs (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles) and AIM-9 Sidewinders. Drones can be tricky to detect on radar, but recent experience in Ukraine means the U.S. has fresh identifying characteristics to work with. Once in range, the slow, hot, whirring pusher engine of Iran’s Shahed drones is not difficult to target. However, Hegseth noted counter-UAS systems have been pushed forward. You knew American technology was the foundation of Ukraine’s superb air defenses, right?
VAMPIRE and Coyote: The VAMPIRE counter-drone system’s name says it all: Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment. That means it can go on almost any truck and fire different missiles. The Navy rushed it to Ukraine in 2023, and since then, "VAMPIRE users have successfully shot down hundreds of enemy drones," according to manufacturer L3Harris. Other examples include Coyote, a small drone that can launch from a sonobuoy to destroy hostile drones or loiter to disable them with electronic jamming in its "non-kinetic" variant. Both have been tested against drone swarms.
To be sure, some Standard Missile-3 Block 1A and Block 2B variants have been heavily taxed. U.S. Navy Aegis destroyers launch SM-3s for exo-atmospheric, midcourse hit-to-kill shots against Iranian ballistic missiles.
On Feb. 4, the Pentagon anticipated the need and announced Tomahawk production would be boosted to 1,000 per year, AMRAAMs to at least 1,900, and SM-6 missiles to more than 500 annually, with SM-3 production accelerating to two to four times its classified annual rate. For obvious reasons, full munitions inventories are not public information.
"Your joint force is steady, frosty, calm and focused," Caine said.
And they have the weapons to carry out their missions.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a report released on Friday, March 6, that 185 civilian casualties were verified between Feb. 26 and March 5. The casualties included 56 killed and 129 maimed, mostly due to Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s and indirect fire during festivities along the border with Pakistain.
The mission said more than half of the victims, about 55% — were women and kiddies. UNAMA added that one airstrike in Barmal district of Paktika ...which coincidentally borders North Wazoo and Kurram Agency... province alone killed 14 civilians, including four women, two girls, five boys and three men, while six others were maimed.
The figures mark a higher civilian toll than similar festivities between Taliban forces and Pakistain that occurred between Oct. 10 and Oct. 17, 2025, according to the UN report.
UNAMA also said that in the last three months of 2025, at least 70 non-combatants were killed and 478 others injured in Afghanistan due to conflict-related violence.
Taliban officials claimed their forces killed at least 30 Pak soldiers during recent festivities along the disputed border, according to the reports.
Pak officials, however, said their forces inflicted heavy losses on Taliban fighters, claiming more than 100 forces of Evil were killed during retaliatory operations.
Earlier this year, between Jan. 1 and Feb. 22, another 13 non-combatants were killed and 12 maimed in airstrikes and cross-border shelling in Nangarhar The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. Kabul claims 30 Pakistani soldiers killed in border clashes
[KhaamaPress] Kabul authorities said Taliban forces killed 30 Pakistani soldiers during clashes along the disputed Durand Line border, according to a defence ministry spokesman.
Enayatullah Khwarazmi, spokesman for the Taliban defence ministry, said the clashes occurred in Shorabak district of Kandahar province, where Taliban fighters allegedly captured a Pakistani military outpost.
He said the outpost was later destroyed with explosives after Taliban forces seized control of the position during the fighting.
Khwarazmi claimed that 30 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the clashes, including 20 who were sent to reinforce the outpost.
He also said Taliban fighters captured five Pakistani military posts in the Dand Patan area of Paktia province and entered positions known as Top Sar Khwuch Karam and Anzerki Sar.
Pakistani authorities have not officially confirmed the Taliban claim regarding the deaths of their soldiers.
However, Pakistani officials have claimed Taliban fighters also suffered casualties in border clashes, reporting that about 20 Taliban fighters were killed in fighting along the frontier.
Clashes between Taliban forces and Pakistani troops have periodically erupted along the disputed Durand Line separating Afghanistan and Pakistan.

SOUTHCOM said the joint U.S.-Ecuadorian operation involved lethal kinetic action against suspected designated terrorist organizations in the country.

[Rudaw] Iraq on Thursday lodged a "protest memorandum" with the US-led international coalition over what security officials described as an "airborne operation" a day earlier that resulted in a deadly confrontation with Iraqi forces in the country’s southern desert, slamming the incident as "treacherous" and stressing that Baghdad will not allow any force to "tamper with the country’s security."
The state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) cited Lieutenant General Qais al-Muhammadawi, deputy commander of Iraq’s Joint Operations Command (JOC), as saying authorities had "received reports about the presence of individuals or movements in the desert of Najaf province [in southern Iraq], near the border with Karbala province."
Muhammadawi added that a force "comprising three regiments from the Karbala Operations Command was tasked with investigating the matter," noting that "the force came [at dawn Wednesday] under heavy gunfire from the air, resulting in the death of one soldier and the injury of two others."
"The force was then reinforced with two regiments from the Counter-Terrorism Service [CTS] to search the area," Muhammadawi added. "They inspected the location but found nothing."
The top commander added that "there was no agreement or approval for any force to be present in this location," claiming the foreign forces - believed to be affiliated with the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. In recent days, shadowy gangs with suspected links to PMF factions have grabbed credit for a series of attacks targeting alleged US interests in the region, including in the Kurdistan Region. The militias say the attacks are part of their response to the ongoing US-Israeli campaign against Iran, which began on Saturday and killed Iran’s longtime supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...> , in an Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... on Tehran.

OPERATIONAL DETAILS
Separately, top Iraqi security officials and well-placed sources told Rudaw on Thursday that the incident followed the landing of US forces in remote desert areas near the borders of Iraq’s western Anbar province and southern Najaf and Karbala provinces.
A high-level security source in Karbala said the US special forces had landed in the Shannana area of the al-Nukhaib desert, which serves as the primary gateway connecting the three provinces.
Shannana, is about 40 kilometers from the Nukhaib subdistrict at the border of the al-Rutba district, situated in the far western and southwestern portion of Anbar and occupying a vast desert plateau that borders Jordan, Syria, and Saudi Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula, largely made up of sand and oil rigs. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual haj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. A local official from Rutba district told Rudaw on Thursday that "US forces had landed in several strategic locations early Wednesday and are now stationed in two separate positions within the district." He added that "Iraqi security forces who attempted to approach the landing site were met with gunfire, leaving several maimed and resulting in the burning of four of their vehicles."
Of note, Rudaw was unable to independently confirm the latter claims.

IRGC CLAIMS 19TH WAVE TARGETED BEN GURION AIRPORT
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the deployment in a statement, saying the Khorramshahr-4 missiles were launched during the 19th wave of what it calls "True Promise Operation," with warheads weighing 1,000 kilograms aimed at central Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion Airport, and what it described as the 27th Airbase of the Israeli Air Force.
Israel's military disputed those claims, stating that all Iranian ballistic missiles launched overnight were intercepted by air defenses, though one missile fired in the morning struck an open area in a central town. The IDF also pointed out that no 27th Squadron exists in the Israeli Air Force, and the IRGC's reference likely points to Airbase 27, also known as Lod Airbase, which was permanently closed in 2010.
Analysts noted that by claiming to target Ben Gurion Airport, the IRGC appeared to be signaling an effort to disrupt Israel's main international gateway, mirroring the impact that Western airstrikes have had on Iranian airports and civilian infrastructure inside Iran.
TEHRAN'S HEAVIEST WARHEAD IN ACTION
The Khorramshahr-4, also known as Kheibar, stands as the most powerful confirmed ballistic missile in Iran's inventory. First unveiled in May 2023, the missile has a reported range of approximately 2,000 kilometers, measures 13 meters in length, and carries a warhead weighing about 1,500 kilograms. Iranian officials claim it can reach speeds of Mach 16 outside the atmosphere and Mach 8 within it.
What makes the weapon particularly challenging for defenders is its cluster munition configuration. Previous IDF assessments have established that the Khorramshahr-4's warhead can open during descent at an altitude of roughly 7 kilometers, releasing approximately 20 submunitions, each carrying about 2.5 kilograms of explosives, across a diameter of some 16 kilometers.
It is this wide dispersal pattern that observers identified in the aftermath of the March 5 strikes on Tel Aviv.
The missile is also equipped with maneuverable reentry vehicles featuring control fins and satellite navigation, and its hypergolic fuel system allows launch preparation in under 12 minutes, significantly reducing the window for pre-launch detection.

The Khorramshahr missile family traces its origins to North Korean Hwasong-10 technology and has been developed through four successive generations since its first test in 2017. The name "Kheibar" references the Battle of Khaybar, a seventh-century military engagement that carries pointed historical symbolism in the context of the Israeli-Iranian rivalry.
SHIFTING TACTICS AMID A DEGRADED ARSENAL
The deployment of the Khorramshahr-4 with its cluster warhead comes as Iran's broader missile strategy has visibly shifted since the opening of hostilities on February 28.
Military analysts have observed that Iran has moved from large coordinated barrages of dozens of missiles to smaller, more frequent volleys arriving every hour or two, a change the IDF attributes to continuous Israeli and American strikes on mobile launchers inside Iranian territory. Brad Cooper, said American forces had sunk or destroyed more than 30 vessels during the campaign. He added that in the past several hours, U.S. forces had also struck an Iranian drone carrier roughly comparable in size to a World War II—era aircraft carrier.
Alongside footage of the strike, CENTCOM said U.S. forces were continuing their operations against Iran's navy without pause. The command said the Iranian drone carrier — described as roughly the size of a World War II aircraft carrier — had been hit and was currently on fire.
The Shahid Bagheri drone carrier is in fact a converted merchant ship that underwent extensive modifications. It features an angled runway about 180 meters (590 feet) long, allowing drones to take off and land. Images released in Tehran during its launch ceremony also showed helicopters positioned on the deck.
The vessel is about 240 meters (787 feet) long and, according to Iranian reports, can carry several squadrons of drones.
Reports in Iran say the ship can deploy up to 60 drones used for reconnaissance and attack missions. In addition to the aircraft on board, the Shahid Bagheri is reportedly equipped with air defense systems and anti-ship missiles, and carries dozens of fast attack boats.
These boats are used by Iran to carry out maritime attacks, either with personnel on board or as explosive-laden suicide vessels.
Beyond its offensive and defensive capabilities, the drone carrier also serves as a forward logistics base for the naval forces of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
