Makalondi, a small town located on the Niger-Burkina Faso border, in the Tillabéri region, was the scene of a large-scale attack claimed by JNIM on February 4, 2026, around 6:30 p.m.
According to security sources, the provisional toll reports at least 36 soldiers killed during the attack. Twelve vehicles equipped with 12.7 mm and 14.5 mm heavy machine guns were taken by the attackers, including one found burned a few kilometers from the site. Weapons, ammunition, and personal effects were also seized by the attackers. Several wounded, some in serious condition, are also to be lamented.

The Benue State Police Command says the death toll from the attack on Abande community in Kwande Local Government Area has risen to 10, while five persons are still missing.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Okon Asuquo, in charge of Operations, led a reinforcement team on a spot assessment to the border community on Feb. 4 at about 5:10 p.m., following the attack which occurred on Feb. 3 at about 3:20 p.m. on the community’s market day.
The assessment team, which included officials of the Benue State Government, the Director-General of Homeland Security and the Executive Chairman of Kwande LGA, faced difficulties accessing the area by road due to the terrain and its proximity to the Cameroon border and Taraba State.
During the visit, two additional bodies were recovered, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 10. The corpses were evacuated to the Jato-Aka Mortuary.

According to verified intelligence shared by official sources, the bomber had received terrorist training in Mansoor Ishtis'hadi training camp in Kunar, Afghanistan and had traveled there multiple times before recently returning. Officials warn that several militant groups operating from Afghan soil,under Taliban patronage, continue to pose a serious threat to the security of the entire region.
Police confirmed the number of casualties. The explosion occurred at Imambargah ...since Pakistain is very religiously correct, Shia Moslems can't call their houses of worship 'mosques,' which are reserved for Sunnis. It's not clear if imambargahs are used for explosives storage like mosques are... Khadijah-tul-Kubra in the Tarlai area of the federal capital.
Images from the site showed bloodied bodies lying on the carpeted floor surrounded by shards of glass, debris, and panicked worshippers.
Dozens more maimed were lying in the garden outside the imambargah as people called for help.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif suggested India’s and Afghanistan’s involvement in the attack, stating in a post on social media platform X that "it has been proved that the terrorist involved in the attack travelled to and from Afghanistan".
"The collusion between India and Afghanistan is being revealed," he said.
The defence minister said that security guards at the site of the incident had "challenged" the attacker, and in response, he opened fire. "He then went kaboom!, standing in the last row of worshippers," he said.
Asif said that the state would respond to this "cruelty with full force".
"After a humiliating defeat, India is fighting a war through its proxies. It doesn’t have the courage to fight directly now," he added.
Speaking on Geo News programme ’Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada ke Saath’ later in the day, Asif said that the attack came as Pakistain signed landmark agreements with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and on the same day as the revival of Basant.
"The timing, I believe, is an effort to sabotage us and our progress ... India cannot engage in an all-out clash with Pakistain, so it is using proxies and Afghanistan to disrupt peace here," he said.
The defence minister said that the jacket wallah was a Pak national who had travelled to Afghanistan some time ago and undergone "extreme religious indoctrination". He added that the bomber returned to Pakistain last year.
’ATTACKER TRAVELLED TO AFGHANISTAN ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS’
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry later told the media in Islamabad that while the attacker was not an Afghan, authorities had been able to determine through forensic tests the number of times he had travelled to Afghanistan.
At the outset of his media talk, he said rescue teams from various departments began reaching the site of the incident within 10-12 minutes of the blast.
Regarding the attacker, he said: "Information has been obtained about the terrorist who carried out the suicide kaboom. He is not an Afghan national, but we have information about the number of times he travelled to Afghanistan after the forensics of his remains."
Chaudhry added that a similar pattern was seen in terror incidents in the country, adding that attacks were either carried out "in the name of religion or on the pretext of ... linguistic and provincial [differences]."
[A] senior police officer, when contacted, said the suicide attack had taken place in a rural area located on the outskirts of the capital city whereas the security measures had been put in place in the urban areas and various sectors of Islamabad.
He said the focus of the police was mainly on the government buildings and other sensitive installations, adding the police were also constantly monitoring the movements of the suspicious people within the capital city through the Safe City cameras besides keeping record of visitors staying in hotels and guest houses.
The official said only “human intelligence” was possible to monitor such activities in rural areas which generally served as “safe heavens” for the terrorists.

An Israeli military court on Thursday sentenced two Palestinians to life in prison for separate terror attacks they carried out in the West Bank in 2007 and 2021.
The first attacker, Ali Dandis, who was arrested in December 2024, carried out a shooting at the Nahal Telem stream in the West Bank in December 2007, in which two off-duty soldiers — Staff Sgt. David Rubin and Cpl. Ahikam Amihai — were killed.
Dandis was handed two life sentences for the 2007 attack and ordered to pay NIS 5.2 million ($1.6 million) in compensation to the families of the soldiers.
The Samaria Military Court also gave Dandis an additional life sentence for a separate shooting attack targeting a bus in the West Bank in 2012, which caused no injuries, at a time when he had temporarily left the custody of the Palestinian Authority.
According to an indictment filed last year, Dandis planned the Nahal Telem shooting attack with his friends Omar Taha and Basel al-Natsha.
On December 28, 2007, the trio arrived at Nahal Telem, a stream in the southern West Bank, in an attempt to locate and kill Israeli soldiers, the indictment said.
Dandis opened fire on Rubin, killing him, and moments later, Taha opened fire on Amihai, killing him as well. Al-Natsha, the third assailant, was killed by the soldiers returning fire.
The two surviving gunmen turned themselves in to Palestinian Authority security forces following the attack. In 2008, the PA sentenced them to 15 years in prison. Dandis, who was subsequently released from PA custody, was detained on December 26, 2024, in Bethlehem by members of the police’s elite Yamam unit.
The second Palestinian sentenced on Thursday, Muhammad Youssef Jaradat, a member of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad cell, opened fire on an Israeli car near the Homesh outpost in the northern West Bank on December 16, 2021, killing Yehuda Dimentman, 25, and wounding two others.
Jaradat and a second Islamic Jihad gunman fled the scene with a third member of the terror cell to a getaway car, where a fourth accomplice — a minor — was waiting, according to an indictment filed against them in 2022.
The three suspects, along with the minor who acted as a driver, were arrested three days later in the village of Silat al-Harithiya and have been in military custody since.
Jaradat was convicted of “intentionally causing death,” the equivalent of murder in the military legal system, as well as weapon trafficking offenses.
The Samaria Military Court on Thursday handed Jaradat a life sentence and ordered him to pay NIS 2 million ($640,000) to Dimentman’s family, as well as additional compensation to the wounded victims of the attack.
The IDF said that the trial of three other suspects in the case was ongoing at the court.

The Israel Defense Forces said it struck a Hamas arms depot in Gaza City on Friday in response to an attack on troops a day earlier, after issuing an evacuation warning for a residential building for the first time since the start of the ceasefire.
Gunmen attacked troops in the Strip’s north on Thursday, in an incident described by the IDF as a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. No soldiers were wounded.
The IDF said Friday that an overnight strike on a Hamas weapon production site in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis was also in response to the attack on troops.
There were no reports of injuries in either of the strikes.
“As part of the strikes, the IDF targeted a site used by the Hamas terror organization for weapons production and a weapons storage facility belonging to the organization,” the military said.
The IDF carried out the strikes, reportedly on a three-story residential building, an hour after it warned it would strike “Hamas terror infrastructure” at the location.
In a statement, the military said it carried out the strikes following warnings to civilians, and “after identification confirmed that no uninvolved civilians were present in the vicinity of the targeted terror infrastructure.”
“The IDF views any violation of the ceasefire agreement gravely, and will act against any attempt by terror organizations in the Gaza Strip to carry out terror attacks against IDF troops and the State of Israel,” the army added.
It marked the first Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip with an official prior evacuation warning issued by the military since September 2025, before the start of the ceasefire.
Hamas and Israel have traded blame over ceasefire violations, even as the US presses them to proceed to the next phases of the ceasefire deal meant to end the conflict for good.
Also Friday, the IDF said a Palestinian terror operative who crossed the Gaza ceasefire line in the Strip’s north was killed by troops.
According to the military, several operatives crossed the Yellow Line and approached reservists “in a manner that posed an immediate threat.”
“Immediately after the identification, the troops fired toward the terrorists to remove the threat. One of the terrorists was eliminated,” the army says.
Similarly, on Thursday, the IDF said it killed a Palestinian terror operative who approached troops near the Gaza ceasefire line in the Strip’s south.
Since the start of the ceasefire in October 2025, the IDF has said it has killed dozens of terror operatives and other “suspects” who have crossed the Yellow Line — demarcating the military’s withdrawal in the Strip — and approached troops. Such incidents have taken place on a near-daily basis.

Also on Thursday, the Israeli army carried out a violent mostly peaceful detonation in a region between the southern border towns of Markaba and Rob Tlatin.
Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that nominally ended the latest Israel-Hezbollah war in November 2024, Israel continues to strike Lebanon near daily and occupies five strategic hilltop points along the border.
Lebanon’s military announced last month that it had concluded the first phase of a plan to disarm non-state groups, including Hezbollah, in the border area south of the Litani River. Future phases are to progressively cover areas north of the river. The army is expected to present its plan for the second phase after its commander, Gen. Rodolphe Haykal, returns from a trip to the U.S.
Hezbollah insists that the ceasefire only requires it to end its military presence south of the Litani and has said it will not discuss disarming in the rest of the country until Israel stops its strikes.
