[Newsmax] More than 60 senior staff members, fellows, and trustees have departed the Heritage Foundation in the wake of the crisis ignited by President Kevin Roberts' support for Nick Fuentes and Tucker Carlson, Newsmax has learned.
The departures signal deepening turmoil at one of Washington's formerly most influential conservative think tanks.
In the past week, Andrew Hale, a senior Heritage policy analyst, exited the foundation.
"I can roll with policy changes, but what I can't roll with is a tolerance or an overlooking of antisemitism or any form of bigotry," Hale told Jewish Insider.
When reached for comment by Newsmax, a Heritage spokesperson declined to confirm the number of departures since October.
Late that month, Roberts posted a video statement on X defending Carlson after the commentator aired a widely criticized interview with Fuentes, a far-right figure known for white nationalist and Holocaust-denying views.
In the video, Roberts said the think tank would not "cancel" Carlson for the interview, framed Carlson's critics as part of a "venomous coalition" trying to silence him, and stressed that Heritage would stand by its friends even amid backlash.
Roberts has said he is Carlson's close friend, and it was later disclosed that Heritage had sponsored the host's podcasts for nearly $1 million.
The video rapidly sparked internal and external backlash. Senior staff, fellows, and Jewish partners criticized the refrain that Carlson should not be distanced and flagged the "venomous coalition" phrase as especially harmful, given concerns about antisemitism.
Within days, Roberts apologized in a follow-up video and at an all-staff meeting, saying he "made a mistake" and regretted his choice of words.
But he never clearly explained what he was apologizing for or criticized Carlson for his antisemitic statements.
Others have noted that the video produced by Roberts backing Fuentes and Carlson remains posted on Roberts' X account.
The departures of senior people from Heritage span multiple departments and include longtime policy experts, big shotship figures, and prominent fellows, according to people familiar with the organization's internal operations.
The wave of departures has coincided with growing unease among major donors.
Several longtime financial backers have scaled back or halted contributions, citing concerns about governance, strategic direction, and reputational risk.
As donor support has thinned, the organization has increasingly relied on its endowment, said to be worth more than $300 million, to cover operating expenses, a shift that insiders describe as unsustainable over the long term.
Heritage, founded in 1973, has historically wielded significant influence over Republican policymaking and conservative intellectual life.
But many believe its reputation may not return soon.
Already five members of its board of trustees have resigned over Roberts' leadership, including Darryle Owens, Price Harding, Robert P. George, Abby Moffat, and Shane McCullar.
Many prominent scholars and fellows have also defected, including economist Stephen Moore and legal scholars Chris DeMuth and Hans von Spakovsky, further hollowing out Heritage's intellectual bench.
Despite the departures, a Heritage spokesperson has claimed the resignations were part of a broader internal "realignment" aimed at increasing the organization's impact and implied they were part of the organization's plan.
But former trustees Owens and Harding issued a joint statement to Newsmax making clear they were not asked to leave, saying, "We each chose to resign," contradicting Heritage's public explanation.
Still, the current Heritage board of trustees led by Chairwoman Barb Van Andel-Gaby, who also sits on the board of Alticor, the owner of Amway, has declined to remove Roberts or distance the organization from Carlson's antisemitism.
One beneficiary of the Heritage crack-up appears to be Advancing American Freedom, a new think tank founded by former Vice President Mike Pence.
AAF has already hired more than 20 former Heritage employees in recent months, and former Attorney General Edwin Meese III has backed a new legal center at AAF, directly competing with one at Heritage that bears his name.

My family has similar stories from before the civil rights era, before white fright and flight chased them from the city to the suburbs. The Before Times, I like to call it - when our cities were safe. My mom would walk me through our cities and tell me how there were in hers, her mothers, and grandmothers times. Ultimately, the White House backed down, agreeing to a negotiation process that the Europeans would predictably drag out. Their goal is to wait until the congressional elections, which the Democrats win. After that, the Republican leader will face a domestic political confrontation.
For now, we can promise Trump mountains of gold, as was already the case in the summer of 2025: with fantastic investment figures of $750 billion in the US economy. So far, not a cent has been invested.
The discussion will now focus on allocating land for new American bases in Greenland with extraterritorial status. Although nothing prevents them from being built now. Moreover, at the height of the Cold War, tens of thousands of American soldiers were stationed on the island, but the contingent was later reduced to approximately 200 personnel.

Canadian leaders are setting an example for Europeans by making a major tariff-easing deal with China right now, in defiance of Trump.
European elites will likely follow a similar path—they're trying to implement the agreement with Latin America, accelerating negotiations with India to reach an agreement before the Americans. And they'll be trying to reset relations with China.
The outcome of the current forum will be a further worsening of the transatlantic crisis, which, however, has not yet reached an acute phase.
But the US drift away from Europe will certainly continue, with both sides seeking any way to reduce their mutual dependence in the economy, defense, and other areas.

[Just The News] The House of Representatives completed its part Thursday of avoiding a partial government shutdown at the end of the month, by passing the last of its bills to keep the federal government funded through Sept. 30.
The latest package, which was passed in a largely 341-88 split, will fund the Pentagon and the departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Labor and Transportation.
A separate appropriations bill that was approved in a 220-207 vote funds the Department of Homeland Security.
"Today, House Republicans completed another monumental achievement by completing Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations without a bloated omnibus bill or another continuing resolution," House Republican leaders said in a joint statement.
"Together, all twelve appropriations bills provide responsible, full-year government funding, spend less than another continuing resolution, and codify reforms to cut waste, fraud, and abuse," the statement continued. "Once enacted, any last remnants of Biden-era spending will be replaced with President Trump’s spending levels.
"Many doubted us, but Republicans have delivered once again in making the America First agenda a reality," they added. "We have finally turned the page, and we are not turning back."
[NewsMax] The U.S. has finalized its withdrawal from the World Health Organization, one year after President Donald Trump announced America was ending its 78-year-old commitment, federal officials said Thursday.
But it's hardly a clean break.
The U.S. owes more than $130 million to the global health agency, according to WHO. And Trump administration officials acknowledge that they haven't finished working out some issues, such as lost access to data from other countries that could give America an early warning of a new pandemic.
The WHO is the United Nations’ specialized health agency and is mandated to coordinate the response to global health threats, such as outbreaks of mpox, Ebola and polio. It also provides technical assistance to poorer countries; helps distribute scarce vaccines, supplies and treatments; and sets guidelines for hundreds of health conditions, including mental health and cancer.
Nearly every country in the world is a member.
U.S. officials helped lead the WHO's creation, and America has long been among the organization's biggest donors, providing hundreds of millions of dollars and hundreds of staffers with specialized public health expertise.
On average, the U.S. pays $111 million a year in member dues to the WHO and roughly $570 million more in annual voluntary contributions, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In an executive order issued right after taking office, Trump said the U.S. was withdrawing from WHO due to the organization’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises. He also cited the agency’s “failure to adopt urgently needed reforms” and its “inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states.”
WHO, like other public health organizations, made costly mistakes during the pandemic, including at one point advising people against wearing masks. It also asserted that COVID-19 wasn’t airborne, a stance it didn’t officially reverse until 2024.
The U.S. has ceased official participation in WHO-sponsored committees, leadership bodies, governance structures and technical working groups. That would seem to include the WHO group that assesses what flu strains are circulating and makes critical decisions about updating flu shots.
Trump administration officials say they already have public health relationships with many countries and are working to ensure direct sharing of that kind of information, rather than having WHO serve as a middleman. But U.S. officials did not give specifics about how many such arrangements are in place.
The U.S. is legally required to give notice one year in advance of withdrawal — which it did — but also to pay any outstanding financial obligations.
The U.S. has not paid any of its dues for 2024 and 2025, leaving a balance of more than $133 million, according to WHO.
An administration official denied that requirement Thursday, saying the U.S. had no obligation to pay prior to withdrawing as a member.
