[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Massachusetts' Democrat governor is facing backlash after using thousands of dollars in taxpayers' money to give a payoff to a top aide accused of trafficking cocaine.
Governor Maura Healey, who is up for re-election, awarded LaMar Cook $31,439 as part of the buyout clause in his contract - on top of his $98,789 base salary - after he was arrested in October.
Cook, 45, was fired after police intercepted a package containing 18 pounds of cocaine that was destined for Healey's Springfield office.
Healey's office later rolled back on the payment, saying it was made in error and that they had 'taken action to get it back' after constituents ridiculed the decision to give an alleged criminal money.
'Taxpayer dollars should never go to an individual who engaged in this type of outrageous criminal activity. This payment was erroneously made,' her office said in a statement on Tuesday.
Healey's office told the Boston Herald that Cook had been informed last month that he had to return the money, but he has yet to do so. The Governor's Office is now gearing up to file a legal complaint against the former employee next week.
The Democrat's gubernatorial opponents were quick to fire criticism at Healey, who has been in the position since 2022.
GOP candidate Brian Shortsleeve told The Herald he wants an investigation into her office to determine how such an error was made.

Weaver, who was tapped by Mamdani to be his new director of the city Office to Protect Tenants, quickly ran back inside after she was asked about the $1.6 million home her mother owns in Nashville, Tennessee.
"Stop being so mean, you guys!"
Interest in Mamdani’s hire kicked off after some of her old social media posts — in which the Rochester transplant railed against gentrification — resurfaced last week.
"There is no such thing as a ’good’ gentrifier, only people who are actively working on projects to dismantle white supremacy and capitalism and people who aren’t," Weaver wrote in a 2018 post.
"Private property including any kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy," she said in a 2019 post.
Weaver once whined, too, about gentrification in her own Crown Heights neighborhood — despite being a middle class white woman who attended Bryn Mawr College and NYU.
"Where I live in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, we saw this cycle where landlords and bankers and policymakers had driven up the value of real estate using speculative financial capital, the housing market crashed, and then the solution to that was just a different private equity firm coming in and owning the buildings," Weaver told Dissent magazine in an interview published last winter prior to her joining Mamdani’s administration.
"This cycle fueled waves of gentrification in Crown Heights."
Weaver, who spent five years organizing the Crown Heights Tenant Union from 2010 through 2015, stopped short of acknowledging her own potential contributions to gentrifying the area.
Her mom, meanwhile, owns a Nashville house worth $1.6 million, records show.
As the backlash against her appointment continued to mount, Weaver defended her record but acknowledged she did have some regret over her past remarks.
"I don’t think I’m out of my mind," she said in a NY1 interview on Tuesday.
"You know, I think that some of some of those things are certainly not how I would, how I would say things today, and are and are regretful. But, you know, I do think my sort of decades of experience fighting for more affordable housing sort of stands on its own."

Officials in Connecticut and Arizona are defending their decision to refuse a request by the U.S. Justice Department for detailed voter information, after their states became the latest to face federal lawsuits over the issue.
"Pound sand," Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes posted on X, saying the release of the voter records would violate state and federal law.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division announced this week it was suing Connecticut and Arizona for failing to comply with its requests, bringing to 23 the number of states the department has sued to obtain the data. It also has filed suit against the District of Columbia.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the department will "continue filing lawsuits to protect American elections," saying accurate voter rolls are the "foundation of election integrity."
Secretaries of state and state attorneys general who have pushed back against the effort say it violates federal privacy law, which protects the sharing of individual data with the government, and would run afoul of their own state laws that restrict what voter information can be released publicly. Some of the data the Justice Department is seeking includes names, dates of birth, residential addresses, driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers.
Other requests included basic questions about the procedures states use to comply with federal voting laws, while some have been more state-specific. They have referenced perceived inconsistencies from a survey from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
Most of the lawsuits target states led by Democrats, who have said they have been unable to get a firm answer about why the Justice Department wants the information and how it plans to use it. Last fall, 10 Democratic secretaries of state sent a letter to the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security expressing concern after DHS said it had received voter data and would enter it into a federal program used to verify citizenship status.
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, a Democrat, said his state had tried to "work cooperatively" with the Justice Department to understand the basis for its request for voters’ personal information.

Start arresting the state officials. It is illegal to not give data to the feds when asked.

The law gives the Feds access to the records. The Dem strategy will be to delay giving up the records until nothing can be done before the election. In the end, I see a situation where the Feds have a list of 250k ineligible voters on the rolls that can’t be removed in time. Dems will be left with the choice of ehether they use those voter records knowing that they will be caught post election.
