Super Hose, I strive to do the classics reasonably well, given the standard set by my darling mother-in-law. My own parents came to the thing as adults, and never developed any traditions of their own for the thing. I like to make fresh cranberry relish from the back of the bag (12 oz fresh cranberries and a quartered orange run through the food processor until finely chopped, stir in about a 1/2 cup sugar to taste, then chill until served) in addition to the usual jellied from a can and whole berry cranberry sauces, because there are always strong feelings about the thing in our circle. My mother-in-law gave me her sauerkraut recipe (brown a chopped onion in a bit of butter, stir in a can of drained sauerkraut and a tablespoon of brown sugar, simmer 10 minutes to meld flavours) and tarted up canned sweet potatoes (to a 16 oz can of sweet potatoes in a frying pan over medium heat add a bit of butter, brown sugar, freshly grated nutmeg, cinnamon, and optionally unsweetened coconut. Simmer, turning pieces occasionally to coat until fluid is reduced by half). Not fancy, but quick and satisfies tradition. I admit to being proud of my gravy, though the tricks are just to strew the bottom of the roasting pan with rough chopped onion, garlic, carrots, celery, and some sage and rosemary, to give the turkey drippings extra flavour, brown the flour-and-butter roux, and deglaze the the roasting pan with champagne before straining it into the thickened base gravy — so extra flavour at each step.

The suspected gunman accused of shooting two National Guard members blocks from the White House the day before Thanksgiving is 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, three law enforcement sources confirmed to Fox News Digital.
Lakanwal, an illegal migrant who entered the U.S. after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, was granted humanitarian parole per DHS sources. No mention of Biden 'illegal orders' to let them in.
Authorities are investigating the shooting as a possible act of international terrorism.
FBI officials confirmed the two West Virginia National Guardsmen remain in critical condition.
"This is a targeted shooting," D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser explained during a news conference Wednesday after the shooting. "One individual appeared to target these guardsmen. That individual has been taken into custody," she confirmed.
Metropolitan Police Department official Jeffery Carroll also explained how the suspect had come around a corner, raised his arm with a firearm, and "discharged it at the National Guard members."
"They were able to, after some back and forth, able to subdue the individual and bring them into custody within moments," he described. "Members of law enforcement in the area were also able to assist and bring that individual into custody," he said.
He added, "Both of the individuals, the guard members, are in critical condition at a local hospital at this time being treated. At this point, we have no other suspects."
The White House was placed on lockdown following the shooting. President Donald Trump is not in Washington, D.C., having left for Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Monday for the Thanksgiving holiday.
According to Reuters, as of Wednesday morning, approximately 2,200 National Guard troops were deployed in Washington, D.C. This included personnel from the District of Columbia as well as units from Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia and Alabama.
Trump shared a post on Truth Social in the wake of the shooting and expressed solidarity with the victims, as well as dismay at the incident that unfolded earlier near the White House.
"The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price," Trump said.
"God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!"
Vice President JD Vance, who was in Fort Campbell at the time of the shooting, also said "everybody who’s a person of faith" to pray for the two Guardsmen.
"I think it’s a somber reminder that soldiers, whether they’re active duty, reserve or National Guard, our soldiers are the sword and the shield of the United States of America," Vance added.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth spoke in the wake of the shooting and said Trump asked him to deploy 500 additional troops to the city.
"This will only stiffen our resolve to ensure that we make Washington DC safe and beautiful," he told reporters Wednesday.
"The drop in crime has been historic. The increase in safety and security has been historic. But if criminals want to conduct things like this, violence against America's best, we will never back down. President Trump will never back down. That's why the American people elected him. America and our warriors, our National Guardsmen, are strong," Hesgeth said.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who sources say was in the US illegally after overstaying his visa, was a member of the Afghan Army stationed in Kandahar where he supported US Special Forces in the region, a relative told NBC News.
Lakanwal was injured while serving in the army and fled Afghanistan, entering the US in September 2021 through the Biden administration’s botched refugee program Operation Allies Welcome.
"We were the ones that were targeted by the Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... in Afghanistan," the relative told the outlet. "I cannot believe it that he might do this," he said.
Lakanwal allegedly ambushed the two National Guard members near the White House, lying in wait before opening fire in a brazen attack.
He allegedly shot a female guard in the chest and head before pumping a bullet into another guard.
The alleged gunman was then shot by return gunfire.
Police have not revealed a motive for the attack.
Lakanwal had been living in Bellingham, Washington, a community close to the Canadian border that accepted other refugees from Afghanistan.
President Trump, in a televised message delivered Tuesday night, called Lakanwal’s attack an "act of terror."
"It was a crime against our entire nation. It was a crime against humanity," Trump said.
The man who shot and seriously wounded two West Virginia National Guard members near the White House on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, according to the FBI.
Lakanwal emigrated to the United States during President Joe Biden's chaotic military withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, the New York Post reported.
He arrived through a program called Operation Allies Welcome, per The New York Times. The Biden-era initiative provided safe haven to Afghans looking to flee Taliban rule in their country.
Lakanwal, 29, was taken into custody after allegedly launching the assault at around 2:10pm at Farragut West metro station, which is in the center of Washington, DC.
The attack, which is now being investigated as an act of terrorism, quickly turned into a shootout after the suspect reportedly got three shots off before officials returned fire.
The perpetrator came around a corner, raised his gun and fired at the guard members, according to Jeffery Carroll, the Executive Assistant Chief of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department.
Carroll added that the suspect was subdued by other guardsmen after 'some back and forth'. When he was taken into custody, he did not have an ID on him and was reportedly not cooperating with investigators.
Both National Guard members were shot in the head, and CNN obtained a cell phone video showing authorities performing CPR on one of the guardsmen.
Both guard members are in critical condition and Lakanwal, who was also shot, has non-life-threatening injuries, according to federal law enforcement officials.
Lakanwal was identified by authorities through his fingerprints, though officials are still working to confirm other details of his identity.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that two victims were being treated at a local hospital after West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey earlier sparked confusion by announcing the soldiers were dead before walking back his statement.
Patel added that the suspect would be charged with assaulting a federal law enforcement officer. The maximum penalty for this offense is 20 years in prison.
West Virginia Attorney General John McCuskey said the two wounded soldiers 'volunteered their time,' along with others, to serve during the Thanksgiving holiday.

A relative of Lakanwal’s said he arrived in the United States in September 2021 after having served in the Afghan army for 10 years alongside U.S. Special Forces troops. Lakanwal was stationed at a base in Kandahar for part of the time he served in the army, the relative said.
The relative who spoke with NBC News served with Lakanwal, supporting U.S. troops.
“We were the ones that were targeted by the Taliban in Afghanistan,” he said.
“I cannot believe it that he might do this,” the relative added.
Lakanwal, who grew up in Khost province, was living in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and five children, the relative said.
The relative said he has not spoken to Lakanwal in several months. The last time they spoke, Lakanwal was working for Amazon and Amazon Flex.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday night.
“I don’t know what happened,” the relative said, his voice cracking with emotion. He added: “I need your help to know why this happened.”

I looked at Fox online about 15 minutes ago and they said he (and his family, wife, five kids; residing in Washington state.) was brought into the country under Biden's term because he had assisted US forces in Afghanistan and became a legal immigrant under Trump's term.
What would make a man, who had helped the US in Afghanistan and now a legal immigrant, risk his life and the well being on his family to drive across the country to shoot two WV National Guard members?
If the shooter was a "sleeper" either on his own or controlled by a person, organization or government, that's taking a long view.
And why shoot two National Guardsmen? There weren't any higher value targets to go after?

B-ham would be a good of example of a place created for non-believers, to be polite. maybe more attention should be paid to where some of these individuals were settled, how the local community reinforces bad actor propaganda of USA as devil. the community and schools could be preceived as abhorrent to anyone with a normal, let alone devout, belief in a morality based faith.
The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (our "allies") was an anti-Western polity in which the exercise of self-evident human rights carried the death penalty. They were an improvement over the Taliban because they were mostly passive-aggressive.
The Western mission in Afghanistan was an attempt to appease the Afghans by paying danegeld, rendering services for free and making political concessions so that the Afghans would no longer support terror attacks.
Afghanistan and other Islamic states have repeatedly openly disrespected Western nations's basic right to self-determination.
An attack by an individual who was loyal to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan should not come as a surprise.

He apparently was fine until his visa expired. Then he took revenge. This is a common pattern in Europe and Britain, too: nothing more than petty criminality (theft, harassment, rape) until their asylum application is definitively rejected, then they kill.
So President Trump’s concern about those whose visas have expired has a solid basis.

Another guardsman in the area who was armed, them drew his pistol and shot the suspect twice, once in the leg and once in the buttocks.
The Major stated that when the suspect began shooting he heard him shout, Allahu akbar!”

[Rudaw] Sulaimani province’s key Khor Mor gas field was attacked by at least an explosive-laden drone late Wednesday, causing a major power outage in the Kurdistan Region after the transfer of natural gas from the field to power stations was completely suspended.
"We inform the citizens of the Kurdistan Region that tonight at 11:30, due to a drone attack on the Khor Mor field, all gas transfers to power stations have been halted. Currently, teams from both the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Electricity, along with Dana Gas company, are on the line to follow up on the consequences of the incident and normalize the situation," said both ministries in a joint statement.
Eighty percent of the Kurdistan Region’s power supply will be cut soon due to the drone attack, the electricity ministry’s spokesperson told Rudaw. The attack has already caused outage across the Region.
"Our teams are trying to avoid a complete blackout," Omed Ahmed said, adding that they will prioritize sensitive and key governmental institutions in this regard.
"More than 3,000 megawatts of electricity will be lost," he added.
An engineer working at the field described to Rudaw how the attack took place.
"First, an NGL storage tank caught fire. At the beginning, the flames were intense. The fire has not been put out yet, but I don’t think it will spread unless it is hit by another drone," they said on the condition of anonymity.
Iraq's Security Media Cell labeled the drone attack as "treacherous" and "serious terrorist act."
It added that the attack did not cause any casualties.
"This constitutes a direct threat to the interests of Iraqis and a serious terrorist act to obstruct and delay efforts aimed at establishing security and economic stability."
The Cell stated that the perpetrators will be held responsible.
Sulaimani International Airport said its flights have not been affected by the drone attack.
Earlier this week, drone sighting triggered sirens at the field.
Located in Chamchamal district, Khor Mor gas field is operated by Pearl Petroleum, a consortium that includes UAE-based Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum. The field has come under numerous Katyusha and drone attacks in recent years, and the Kurdish authorities have blamed Iran-backed militia groups.

The operation, which began overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, was launched in response to efforts by Paleostinian terror groups to establish a presence in the area.
On Wednesday night, the IDF confirmed that a Paleostinian who hurled an bomb at Israeli soldiers during a raid in the northern West Bank town of Qabatiya had been rubbed out.
The soldiers of the Paratroopers Brigade’s reconnaissance unit were not hurt by the bomb.
"The troops responded by opening fire and eliminating" the attacker, the military said. After the suspect was killed, the IDF said the soldiers found several more bombs inside his car, which were then destroyed.
The Paleostinian Authority’s health ministry named the man as Osama Yasser Mohammed Kumail. Local sources cited by WAFA, the PA’s official news agency, said Kumail was shot in the stomach near a cafe in Qabatiya and taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
The operation was being carried out by the equivalent of three IDF brigades, and included forces from the Commando Brigade and Samaria and Menashe regional brigades, alongside Border Police officers.

He was taken to a hospital, the ambulance service said. The IDF did not respond to a request for comment on the incident as of Wednesday evening.
And a Paleostinian NGO said on Wednesday that Israeli security forces arrested or performed field interrogations on 60 people, including minors, in Tubas. It was unclear how long they would be held, and how many had been released.
Among those detained and later released was Samir Basharat, the mayor of Tammun, a town in the area, according to the Hamas-affiliated Prisoner Affairs Office.

The raid was taking place in several Palestinian towns and villages in the northeast of the West Bank, including Tubas, Tammun, and al-Aqaba.
Palestinian media reported that a curfew was imposed in the area, and several roads were blocked by bulldozers that created mounds of earth.
“The Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet won’t allow terror to become established in the area and are working actively to thwart it,” the IDF and Shin Bet said in a joint statement.
The operation was being carried out by the equivalent of three IDF brigades, and included forces from the Commando Brigade and Samaria and Menashe regional brigades, alongside Border Police officers.
Israeli Air Force helicopters were also deployed amid the operation, with the IDF reporting that strikes were carried out before the troops entered the towns, to “isolate the area and cordon it off.”

Meanwhile, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said its medics tended to 10 people wounded amid the operation. Four of those people were taken to a hospital, the Red Crescent said.
Tubas Mayor Mahmoud Daraghmah said that the IDF had imposed a curfew and shut down roads leading to the town, and that “Apache helicopters fired toward the population this morning.”
He said Israeli forces also seized five homes in Tubas and another 10 homes in Tammun.
The operation was expected to last several days, similar to other operations carried out in Palestinian villages during the past two years. However, unlike raids in several northern West Bank refugee camps earlier this year, the IDF was not expected to order the wide evacuation of civilians.
