Regional Military Cooperation: Benin and France Committed to Securing the Gulf of Guinea
As part of strengthening military cooperation between Benin and France, the French Navy's projection and command vessel PHA Tonnerre made a notable stopover in Beninese waters from November 2 to 9, 2025.
The visit of the amphibious helicopter carrier (PHA) Tonnerre to Benin is part of the regional maritime cooperation operation CORYMBE, which aims to bolster security in the Gulf of Guinea, a strategic region facing piracy, trafficking, and illegal fishing. It also sought to foster exchanges between the armed forces of the two countries through joint ground training, particularly during the "Zangbeto 2025" counter-terrorism exercise.
JOINT MANEUVERS FOR STRENGTHENED COOPERATION
During its stay, the PHA Tonnerre contributed to carrying out intensive activities to build operational capacity. Among the highlights, joint beach reconnaissance exercises brought together Beninese and French divers, while onboard fire-fighting simulations and helo-hoisting maneuvers tested the responsiveness and coordination of the teams.
A beach landing sequence provided practical training scenarios for warrant officer cadets from the National Warrant Officer School in Ouidah on disembarkation techniques, position relief, and tactical exercises focused on securing targets in lagoon environments.
The Tonnerre's stopover also provided an opportunity for a logistics exercise involving trainees from the Ouidah Logistics Academy, who came to exchange with French military personnel on methods for managing and coordinating embarked operations.
A HIGHLY APPRECIATED PUBLIC OPENING
Upon entering Beninese territorial waters on November 2, the Tonnerre was welcomed by Rear Admiral Fernand Ahoyo, Maritime Prefect; the French Ambassador to Benin, Nadège Chouat; and the European Union Ambassador to Benin, Sandrine Platteau. The three dignitaries boarded the vessel for fruitful discussions on security and regional cooperation issues in the Gulf of Guinea.
Until its departure from Cotonou on November 9, the Tonnerre widely opened its doors to the public. Hundreds of visitors, including Beninese dignitaries and curious onlookers from all walks of life, were able to explore the ship's facilities and interact with its crew.
This stopover bears witness to the shared commitment of Benin and France to a safer Gulf of Guinea, within the framework of military cooperation resolutely focused on countering terrorism, in service of regional development and stability.
The PHA Tonnerre, the second largest ship in the French Navy after the Charles de Gaulle, carries helicopters, amphibious vehicles, 650 troops, a hospital, and a command zone. Its versatility makes it a key player in regional cooperation.

The Treasury Secretary was questioned about giving the Latin country a $20 billion 'bailout' by MSNBC's Jonathan Lemire on Tuesday.
The deal finalized on October 20 allows Argentina to exchange depreciating pesos for stable US dollars to bolster reserves and prevent economic turmoil. In exchange, the US earns interest on up to $20 billion it has agreed to lend at a fixed rate.
Donald Trump sees the plan as not only economically sound but a strategic move to keep Argentina from slipping under China’s influence, as Beijing expands its swap lines across Latin America.
'How does a $20 billion bailout of Argentina help Americans?' Lemire asked.
Bessent shot back: 'Well, do you know what a swap line is?'
Lemire confirmed that he understood, 'It's a currency swap', throwing the question back at Trump's money man, 'You're the Treasury Secretary, sir.'
Bessent then rebuked him for referring to the $20 billion deal as a bailout and explained how it actually made money for the US Treasury.
Why would you call it a bailout?' Bessent asked. 'In most bailouts, you don't make money. The US government made money. We used our financial balance sheet to stabilize the government, one of our great allies in Latin America, during an election. The president there won in a landslide.'
The Treasury Secretary was referring to Argentina's Javier Milei whose radical free market reforms have helped turn the country into America's closest ally in the region.
'I would rather use peace through economic strength than have us be shooting at narco boats coming off the shore if the government collapses,' Bessent continued.
'We have a generational opportunity in Latin America to create allies.'
A bailout is a direct financial rescue - typically cash grants, loans at below-market rates, or debt forgiveness - given to a failing entity without expectation of full repayment or profit, often using taxpayer funds.
The Argentina deal, by contrast, lends dollars only if they are drawn and America earns interest, and gets repaid in full. Historically such deals are profitable for the Treasury. So far, no funds have been disbursed.
It is, of course, a bailout. One that can be profitable, but that's not a given.
At the end of the day, the US could find itself holding a pile of pesos worth much less than they were originally (including interest). Or not.
"In most bailouts, you don't make money". Well the idea is to stabilize the finances of your partner with that bailout, and if this is successful, you make money. If not... not.

Following Hebrew media reports that the French government intended to prevent eight Israeli companies from taking part in a defense exhibition in Gay Paree next week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot informed Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Tuesday that all Israeli companies will be allowed to participate.
"French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot spoke a short while ago with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and informed him that all Israeli companies will be permitted to participate in the exhibition," Sa’ar’s office said in a statement.
A French official with knowledge of the matter told The Times of Israel that the decision to allow all the companies to attend "was a French decision and not the result of Israeli pressure."
Earlier in the day, Channel 12 reported that after reviewing a list of 45 companies expected to take part in the Milipol Gay Paree exhibition from November 18—25, La Belle France notified Israel that it would bar eight Israeli firms from the event, without specifying which ones. The French reportedly said their participation "would pose a problem," while clarifying that the other Israeli companies would be permitted to attend, causing outrage from Israeli officials. It was not unclear whether the exclusion was related to the companies’ links to Israel’s activities in Gazoo

French authorities reportedly expressed concern about potential protests and unrest from pro-Paleostinian organizations if the Israeli companies were allowed to attend. [Breitbart] The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it is investigating the University of California, Berkeley, a day after “mob violence” from Antifa protesters occurred outside of a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event.
In a post on X, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon shared a letter that was addressed to UC Berkeley Police Chief Yogananda Pittman. In the letter, Pittman was asked to “preserve all records” in her possession that are “relevant to the agency’s preparation, execution, and response to the Turning Point event held” at the campus on Monday, along with related protests.
“The @CivilRights Division, under @AGPamBondi’s leadership, has asked UC Berkeley Police to preserve all records regarding their response to the mob violence at UC Berkeley’s TPUSA event,” Dhillon said in her post. “Every American has the right to speak at and attend events without fear.”
The letter stated, in part, that the situation at TPUSA’s event “may implicate the University of California’s commitment to provide adequate security”:
The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division has recently become aware of concerning incidents occurring on your campus at the University of California (UC), Berkeley on or about November 10, 2026. These events may implicate the University of California’s commitment to provide adequate security pursuant to a 2018 settlement agreement in Young America’s Foundation, et al. v Napolitano et al., U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 17-02255. Our office previously opened investigations of the University of California System for potential violations of Title VI and Title VII based on other events. We will determine whether the events of November 10 should also be included in those investigations. We are also determining whether recent events provide a basis for additional investigation of violations of federal rights, including, without limitation, violations of the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution.
Dhillon’s letter also explained that the request to preserve all records related to the response to the violence at the TPUSA event, included but was “not limited to” all written or electronic communications from UC Berkeley Campus Police regarding the incident or TPUSA, “generally in the last year,” along with “minutes and communications of any pre-event planning either internal or with outside groups” relating to the event, among others.
The letter to Pittman comes after video footage surfaced on social media on Monday of masked Antifa protesters lighting flares and yelling, “Fuck you, fascists.”
In response to the violence at UC Berkeley, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a statement warning that Antifa is an “existential threat” to the United States. Bondi also warned that the DOJ would “spare no expense unmasking all who commit and orchestrate acts of political violence.”
“Antifa is an existential threat to our nation,” Bondi wrote in a post on X. “The violent riots at UC Berkeley last night are under full investigation by the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force. We will continue to spare no expense unmasking all who commit and orchestrate acts of political violence.”
[GEO.TV] A Ottoman Turkish C-130 military cargo plane with at least 20 personnel on board crashed in Georgia on Tuesday after taking off from Azerbaijan but the number of casualties and the cause of the incident were not immediately clear.
Initial video from the scene near the Azerbaijan border showed chunks of twisted metal strewn across a grassy knoll, with parts of the fuselage still ablaze and dark smoke rising into a clear sky.
Footage circulating on social media appeared to show the plane corkscrewing towards the earth and then bursting into flames. Rooters could not immediately verify that footage.
Ottoman Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan interrupted a speech in Ankara to offer condolences for "our deaders" — a term he regularly uses to describe not only combat deaths but also service personnel killed in the course of their general duties.
Erdogan, his office and the ministry did not say what caused the crash, and they did not provide a corpse count. Local media said there were both Ottoman Turkish and Azeri personnel on board the US-made aircraft but gave no numbers.

Georgia’s interior ministry confirmed the plane went down in the Sighnaghi area, “about five kilometers (3.1 miles) from Georgia’s state border” with Azerbaijan.
Georgia’s Sakaeronavigatsia air traffic control service said the plane had disappeared from radar shortly after entering Georgian airspace, and that it had been alerted to the crash by emergency services.

Crap. Looks like the entire wing, with engines, separated from the fuselage. Probably a wing box failure, which becomes a significant risk at around the 30,000 flying hours mark for C-130's. To meet the speed and range requirements of the initial design required a narrow wing, which has a higher wing loading which puts more stress on the wing box, which holds the wings to the fuselage.
There was/is a Youtube video that shows the wings of a C-130, that was surplus and being used for firefighting, fold up in flight, causing the plane to crash, killing all aboard.

Hamdi, who is Moslem, was on a speaking tour in the US when he was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on October 26. He had just addressed the annual gala for the Sacramento, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations ... the Moslem Brüderbund's American arm ... , or CAIR, the day before his arrest.
In a statement late Monday, the organization said Hamdi had "chosen to accept an offer to leave the United States voluntarily."
"It is this simple: Sami never should have spent a single night in an ICE cell. His only real ’offense’ was speaking clearly about Israel’s genocidal war crimes against Paleostinians," said the CEO of CAIR’s California chapter, Hussam Ayloush, in a statement.

CAIR said Hamdi’s charging document in immigration court did not accuse him of criminal conduct or security concerns but only listed a visa overstay, which they blamed on the government revoking his visa.
Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman, said in a statement Tuesday that Hamdi had requested voluntary departure and "ICE is happily arranging his removal from this country."
The State Department said due to "visa record confidentiality," it could not comment on specific cases.
CAIR, whose national director praised the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led terror onslaught that started the Gaza war, has said that Hamdi, 35, was detained in response to what it characterized as his vocal criticism of the Israeli government during a US speaking tour.
The Department of Homeland Security said at the time of Hamdi’s arrest that the State Department had revoked his visa and that ICE had put him in immigration proceedings. Homeland Security later accused him of supporting the October 7 attack.
In a statement at the time, McLaughlin cited remarks he made in a video posted online shortly after the Hamas attacks in which he called to "celebrate the victory" of October 7 and asked his audience "how many of you felt euphoria" when they heard of the Hamas atrocities in which Death Eaters killed some 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.
Hamdi claimed later his intent was not to praise the attacks but to suggest that the violence was "a natural consequence of the oppression that is being put on the Paleostinians."
The State Department has not said specifically what Hamdi said or did that initiated the revocation but in a post on X the department said: "The United States has no obligation to host foreigners" who the administration deems to "support terrorism and actively undermine the safety of Americans. We continue to revoke the visas of persons engaged in such activity."

One man, Mehrdad Dalir, staged a hunger strike in ICE detention, where he’d been sent after refusing to board a commercial flight to Tehran, historically the only way the US deported Iranians.
He had turned himself in to border control after crossing into the US from Mexico, and had petitioned for asylum. He was interviewed by phone, and had his case denied.
Dalir, a political activist who has been critical of Islamic law, originally fled to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... from Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The father, along with Mehrdad and his two brothers, were all recognized as protected by the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... High Commissioner for Refugees. The two brothers are resettled in the US, while the father is approved for resettlement but has not yet been resettled, and remains in Turkey, where he has temporary status.
Mehrdad attempted suicide on the day of the flight, he told the Times, cutting his wrists with a razor; he said he was rushed to a clinic and then put in solitary confinement until the flight. A Homeland Security spokeswoman, Tricia McLaughlin, told the Times that Dalir did not attempt suicide.
The deportee said that upon being brought to the plane, he screamed and begged, "They will kill me in Iran. Please don’t send me back, please have mercy."
According to McLaughlin, 23 of the 54 Iranians deported on the flight had ties to terrorism, while seven were on the terror watch list, and five had links to human trafficking networks; one more was convicted of having ties to terror groups, while two others allegedly committed fraud by uploading fake or altered photos.
Neither Dalir, nor an ethnic-minority deportee whom the Times interviewed but did not publish the name of (referring to him as "A.A."), were among those accused of terrorism or fraud. McLaughlin said both men were given due process, including a chance to make their case for protection.
Before taking off, some of the deportees asked to access their items in order to discard things that might incriminate them in Iran, including a Bible, a cross, and proof of links to opposition groups, the report said. The Times did not clarify whether that access was granted.
The deportation flight itself took almost 50 hours, according to the report, with stops in Puerto Rico, Cairo, and Doha. All deportees were shackled and handcuffed until the plane reached Doha. There, they further resisted deportation, and were reportedly beaten by Qatari security agents. They were unshackled, but remained in handcuffs, Dalir and A.A. said.
Upon arriving in Iran, the returnees were reportedly questioned, and told to be on notice for further questioning. Dalir and A.A. have both been told to report for further interrogations.
A.A. fled Iran and is now in hiding. Dalir has not reported for further interrogations and has been moving between locations inside of Iran. Dalir told the Times that three of the other Iranians on the flight have had their passports confiscated.
More than 400 Iranians in the US currently face deportation, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry. There are plans for more chartered deportation flights, according to the report.
[Ynet] The IDF announced Wednesday that it has completed a large-scale multi-branch exercise named "Lion's Roar" in the West Bank, involving the Judea and Samaria Division and the newly established Gilead 96th Division. This was the first exercise of its kind in which two divisions operated together, aiming to strengthen operational coordination and joint capabilities in the sector.
The drill involved about 180 aircraft and simulated more than 40 extreme scenarios, including attacks on outposts, simultaneous infiltrations by terrorists into multiple communities, combat in dense urban areas, mass casualty rescue and medical evacuation, response to multi-casualty incidents, intelligence integration, and combat-time command and control. The exercise was conducted in cooperation with ground forces, the Air Force, and internal security units.
Participants included Central Command forces, the Air Force, the Operations Directorate, Military Intelligence, the Shin Bet, the Civil Administration, the IDF's enemy simulation unit, command-level communications units, the Technology and Logistics Directorate, Magen David Adom, and the Israel Police. Concurrently, updated operational defense and activation plans for Central Command were reviewed.
