Federal prosecutors have indicted the founder and several leaders of the House of Prayer Christian Churches of America, accusing the Georgia-based ministry of running a decades-long, $22 million fraud scheme that targeted U.S. military members and veterans.
Following the indictment, the FBI on Wednesday conducted a raid near Augusta, Georgia, arresting leaders after years of allegations that the church operated like a cult and preyed on military communities nationwide.

Denis, whose true identity remains unknown but who obtained U.S. citizenship in 2002, is accused of exercising strict control over members through intimidation, manipulation and forced obedience, according to the indictment.
Leaders allegedly aided in the manipulation by maintaining members’ personal information, controlling their finances and orchestrating divorces and property transfers.
Dating back to at least 2004, prosecutors allege the church orchestrated "straw buyer real estate purchases," using church members’ names to obtain mortgages under false pretenses and then transferring the properties to entities under its control.

Prosecutors also accuse the leaders of defrauding the VA by falsely certifying students for GI Bill benefits through HOPCC-affiliated Bible seminaries.
Funds intended for veterans’ education were instead diverted to church leaders and affiliated entities, according to the indictment.
In addition to the other crimes, court documents note Denis allegedly aided in filing false joint tax returns in 2018, 2019 and 2020, resulting in claims of hundreds of thousands of fraudulent refunds each year.
In a motion to designate the case as complex and exclude time under the Speedy Trial Act, prosecutors claim they reviewed more than 175 bank accounts, conducted dozens of witness interviews, executed five search warrants across four states, and seized more than 100 electronic devices and 80 boxes of documents.
"The defendants are accused of exploiting trust, faith, and even the service of our nation’s military members to enrich themselves," said Paul Brown, special agent in charge of FBI Atlanta. "This indictment makes clear that using coercion, manipulation, and fraud under the guise of religion will not shield wrongdoers from accountability."
More than 200 grand jury subpoenas were issued in the alleged fraud schemes, which spanned nearly two decades and involved 150 to 200 properties, according to court documents.
Denis is being represented by attorney Steven Sadow, who was lead counsel for President Donald Trump during his Georgia election interference case. Sadow could not immediately be reached for comment.

Neighbors told The Post that the older woman was bound to her wheelchair.
Her body was "unrecognizable" from the burns, Assistant District Attorney John Esposito told the court, adding that she suffered thermal burns, a fractured larynx — a possible sign of strangulation — and "soot in her trachea."
Frank Olton, 76, had been tied to a pole in the basement before he was stabbed several times, killing him.
Prosecutors said McGriff set fire to the slain man’s chest before igniting an inferno upstairs.

The alleged killer has 11 prior convictions, including four for violent mostly peaceful felonies, prosecutors said.
McGriff was on parole following his release from prison in 2023 after serving 17 years of a 20-year sentence for armed robbery and sex crimes.
He was out of prison for more than a year when the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision received word from the NYPD that the career criminal failed to register his address as required on the sex offender registry in 2024, a department front man said.
But instead of being slapped with a parole violation, he continued to walk free until he was busted for the shocking double murder.
McGriff was ordered held without bail on 18 counts, including murder, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, arson and identity theft related to the shocking slayings. He is not facing any sex-crime related charges.

[NYPOST] A twisted New Jersey father shot and killed another man — and then enlisted his wife and son to chop up the victim's body with a chainsaw, according to law enforcement officials.
Everton Thomas, 41; Sherrie Parker, 41; and their son Deshawn Thomas, 22, are each being charged for their part in the killing and grisly butchering of Harold Miller, 48, of Deptford, according to a release from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.
The family was charged on Sept. 5 in connection to the killing and dismemberment of 48-year-old Harold Miller.
Miller was playing cards at a friend's house in Camden in the early morning hours on June 12. After leaving the home, Miller entered the Thomas residence, according to cell phone tracking data, the release stated.
It's unclear how or if Miller knew the Thomas family and why he went into the home.
Surveillance footage from outside the Baird Boulevard home showed Miller enter the residence at around 11:30 a.m. — shortly before a gunshot rang out from inside the building, prosecutors alleged.
After the alleged shooting, Parker and Deshawn purchased a chainsaw, containers, trash bags, and other cleaning supplies, according to the release.
Additional surveillance video showed Everton and his son hauling heavily loaded trash bags to dumpsters at Tamarack Apartments in Camden, the prosecutor's office said.
A witness who lives at the Thomases' home told detectives Deshawn confessed to him that his dad asked for help to ''chop up'' a body, Patch reported.
For three days after the shooting, Everton prevented the two people living in the home with the family from entering the basement, according to the outlet.
That witness said Parker told him, ''a wife got to do what she's got to do'' and that she was not ''giving up her husband,'' according to court papers reviewed by Patch.
On June 20, Camden police conducted a search of the residence, where they observed bloodstains and found the twisted father was in possession of a loaded gun, cops said.
The following day, Everton attempted to flee to Canada despite not yet being charged. He was arrested on Monday at the Port of Buffalo after crossing the border on a commercial bus.
All three members of the sick family were charged in relation to Miller's murder on September 5, the release stated.
Everton is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree desecration of human remains, and tampering with physical evidence in the fourth degree.

Indoor chainsaw use with respect to body disposal is not recommended because spraying DNA all over the place is not a good way to hide criminal activity.
If you have never used a chainsaw, the first time should not be for a three shift operation to cut up a murder victim.

The DRC last declared the end of an Ebola outbreak in September 2022, after one case was confirmed in the eastern province of North Kivu. Testing showed that the case was genetically linked to the 2018-2020 outbreak in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, which killed nearly 2,300 people.
Kasai Province previously reported Ebola outbreaks in 2007 and 2008, according to the WHO.

Brantley Worley, a captain with the McCaysville Police Department, was shot on Friday at 11:10pm while responding to a 911 call.
The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Timothy Craig Ramsey, who police say is still on the run. No details about what led to the shooting have been released.
The shooting happened in McCaysville, a small town that borders Tennessee.
Worley was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Chattanooga and is alive but in critical condition as of Saturday morning.
Worley's wife, Jessica, also confirmed her husband's condition, saying on Saturday that she was with him in the ICU. She pledged to stay with him until he comes home.
Multiple local, state and federal agencies are assisting in the search for Ramsey, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations.
Ramsey has been described as a 5'11" white male weighing about 185 pounds. He has long blonde hair and blue eyes.
He was last seen on 1st Street wearing a green top, dark-colored pants and a dark motorcycle helmet.
Ramsey is being considered 'armed and 'extremely dangerous'. The public is urged not to approach him if they see him and rather call 911 if they have any information that will lead to his arrest.
Ramsey has been charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder a police officer. This charge could be upgraded if Worley dies in the hospital.
Chief of Police Otis Earley told WIS10 that Worley has a broken neck and is suffering from brain bleeding. He also has fluid in his lungs.
'Captain Worley is a dedicated officer who has faithfully served this community, and we are asking everyone to keep him, his family, and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,' Earley said in a statement.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp took to social media early Saturday morning to express his sympathy for the wounded officer and his family.
'Marty, the girls, and I are asking all Georgians to join us in praying for this officer who was shot in the line of duty, as well as all law enforcement who face this kind of danger on a regular basis to protect their communities,' Kemp said.
