Nothing fancy or unusual about the rifle. Sporterized Mauser bolt gun rechambered in .30-06 as a deer rifle; there are thousands of them out there - the kind of thing you'd inherit from your granddad or find at a pawn shop. OREM, Utah — Questions continue to circulate about the role of George Hodgson Zinn, who was briefly detained in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz confirmed Wednesday night that Kirk, 30, founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, died after being shot while delivering remarks during a campus speaking engagement.
While Zinn was identified on social media as a possible suspect, others have defended him, noting that although he has a reputation locally as a troublemaker, he was reportedly standing near police officers at the time of the shooting. Witnesses reported that the actual shooter appeared to have been positioned roughly 200 meters away from the venue.
Authorities confirmed that Zinn was taken into custody after video footage showed him being handcuffed at the scene.
However, officials have since clarified that he was not involved in the shooting and has been cleared of suspicion. He remains categorized as a “person of interest” while investigators verify all accounts.
Law enforcement sources also disclosed that, shortly before the attack, an unidentified individual was seen on a rooftop near the building.

Assassination is violence. It is also political. There will not be violence instigated by MAGA, but neither will there be rhetorical or physical disarmament. The Feds have already identified the shooter but the perp has not been captured. The murder weapon was found and the ammo was decorated with political graffiti. I think we can dispense with the toleration of lawlessness. If the group behind the attack is not already identified as a terrorist org, Trump ought to take care of that immediately. We can add some more groups as this winds out.

They've been calling us MAGA fascists since 2016 and it's pretty obvious that they are Marxists. Then you have not one but two assassination attempts on our President.
Yes, I would like to see it all toned down before we descend into civil war but when they're shooting real bullets at us they must know that some will be tempted to shoot back.
We know that for years on our college campuses, conservative speakers have met with violent protests. That is not acceptable. In future, if they need to be accompanied by the National Guard then so be it. Then the protesters can go to jail for a good, long time. If the college administrators don't like it, they can go to hell.
No, we don't know who the shooter was or what his motivations were and maybe we should remain calm until we know. But we can't help having our suspicions.
This gets back to some of my previous posts in which I ask where did the shooter get the gun, what drugs were in his system and with whom was he communicating? I'm still waiting for answers.

I don't know. I never followed Charlie Kirk. Did he engage in hate speech? How does Matthew Dowd define hate speech? Maybe it's just the truth that Dowd doesn't want to hear.
I would argue that Dowd himself was practicing hate speech by, in effect, saying that Kirk had it coming. That's projection, a classic Democrat tactic.
Remember when they called Bush Hitler? Now that was hate speech.
I was glad to hear that Dowd got fired but I do not advocate violence against him. I don't want him shot. I just want him to be unemployed. If Democrats tone it down, maybe we can too. But don't hold your breath.

How we try to think about such things here though sometimes steps are skipped. The twitter thread is worth reading, too. Note that the tweet was posted before he saw the FBI announcement about finding the gun and engraved ammunition, which strongly suggests Black Bloc/Antifa or a wannabe. What odds the shooter will turn out to be either autistic or mentally ill, and therefore persuadable — whether through self-radicalization or grooming?
I don't know anything other than public information about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
However, a primer follows about patterns in past political assassinations. I will sketch what scenarios an intelligence analyst would come up with looking at this one.
The first and most important rule in this kind of investigation is: when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras.
In political assassinations, as an ordinary murders, the correct suspect is usually the most obvious suspect. Airport-thriller-style convoluted plots and false-flag ops pulled off by unlikely people or organizations are rare in the real world.
Accordingly, when you're trying to solve a political assassination, the right question to ask is "Who said they wanted him dead?"
Then, you infiltrate those organizations, or arrest a bunch of members, and do contact tracing. Usually you do in fact find your killer that way. It's not very different from ordinary police work except for the stakes.
There are broadly speaking three different kinds of assassin: the nutter, the zealot, and the pro. They are not difficult to distinguish once you got your hands on them.
Nutters don't have a coherent political ideology, though they may spout semi-random slogans that political actors can seize on to pretend that they do. They generally have quite an obvious history of mental illness
Before capture, given the kind of public evidence we have now in Charlie Kirk's assassination, it's difficult to tell the zealots from the pros by their MO. It used to be easier, but as I noted in a previous post sniper doctrine and technique have been leaking into popular culture for decades.
It's easier to spot the nutters; they tend to have poor forward-planning capacity. A very obvious way this manifests is a weak or non-existent plan for exfiltrating after the hit. Thus, the nutter is very likely to get caught quite soon after the assassination, often at the site.
This also produces a false-prominence effect - people think political assassins are more likely to be nutters than is actually the case.
Pros - professional assassins working for intelligence agencies or militaries - are also rare. They do occasionally strike - as when, for example the Bulgarian secret service whacked Pope John Paul - but high-profile public assassinations carry a risk of diplomatic and political blowback the most nations are unwilling to assume.
Also, trained assassins are a scarce resource and exfiltrating in the hue and cry following a very public assassination is chancy. Usually you're going to send them against more obscure targets like exiled dissidents that you think might still be dangerous, hoping not to trigger a full law-enforcement and counterintelligence response.
There's been talk in some of the wackier corners of the Right that the Mossad did this one. No analyst would take this seriously; the blowback risk to the Israelis is far too high to justify any gain. Same goes for the Russians, though they have a higher risk tolerance than the Israelis and had a much higher tolerance in Soviet times.
In the case of Charlie Kirk it's pretty high odds we're looking at a zealot. That's usually the way to bet, and in this case, the quality of his exfiltration plan and the fact that he has successfully disappeared raises the odds.
Given all these factors, LEOs are going to be looking for zealots associated with domestic organizations that said they wanted Charlie Kirk dead.
Yes, this seems boring and obvious. The main point I'm trying to drive home here is that the boring and obvious theory about a political assassination is usually the correct one.
Accordingly, the first place investigators of the assassination of Charlie Kirk are going to be looking is gun clubs associated with Antifa and the hard left, like the John Brown Gun Club and Redneck Revolt.
It's not certain that Kirk's assassin is a member of one of those groups, but if you had to place a bet that would be where to put it.

Free discourse between disagreeing sides was Charlie’s gig. He did it well. He built bridges. Somebody demo’d the bridge. It looks like it is Antifa. I believe that they should be designated as a terrorist organization at this point and rounded up on Federal charges. Someone can try to take his spot as a bridge builder, but we seem to have created quite a few sociopaths in the last several decades. Reaching out to folks that have no moral compass seems useless to me.

I will continue my civil and well reasoned proposal. Declare Antifa a terrorist organization. Charge its supporters. The well reasoned part: no need to deal with the race baiters as Antifa is predominantly white. If my proposal is rejected, I am willing to settle for a compromise outcome: hit Antifa with a RICO and lock up all their supporters.

It said in a statement on Wednesday evening that it would "increase the pace of strikes" in the densely populated Gaza City, with the intention of "targeting Hamas’ terror infrastructure, disrupting its operational readiness, and reducing the threat to our forces as part of preparations for the next stages" of the offensive.
As part of its preparations, the IDF said it has struck over 360 "terror targets" in Gaza City in recent days, including several high-rise towers that it said were being used by Hamas for various purposes.
The widespread strikes were conducted in three main waves, beginning on Friday with attacks against high-rise buildings where the military said Hamas had installed surveillance equipment and set up sniper and anti-tank missile posts and command centers.
The first wave took place in the Daraj and Tuffah neighborhoods, where the IDF said it hit Hamas observation and sniper posts, a Hamas interrogation facility, tunnel shafts under buildings and weapon depots, among other targets.
The second and third waves took place in Daraj, Tuffah and the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, with numerous strikes against Hamas targets, including a tunnel where operatives were gathered to carry out an attack and an RPG manufacturing site, the military said.
The strikes continued into Wednesday, when the IDF hit a tower it said Hamas was using to monitor Israeli troops.
According to the military, the terror group had installed surveillance equipment inside the building to track the movement of Israeli troops in the area and to advance attacks on Israel.
A video shared online from the scene of the strike showed the building collapsing in a cloud of dust, followed by a secondary explosion.
SPEEDING UP EVACUATIONS
Israel continued to urge Paleostinians to evacuate Gaza City on Wednesday. The city in the north of the Strip is home to roughly one million people, or around half of Gaza’s total population. Residents have been slowly leaving as the IDF has ramped up preparations for an offensive against Hamas there, and on Sunday the military ordered the entire city to evacuate immediately.
In total, the military estimates that around 150,000 Paleostinians have fled the city since Israel started urging them to evacuate, including tens of thousands in the past day.
But the vast majority have refused to heed the IDF’s call, choosing to stay put, having become exhausted by multiple previous displacements and believing nowhere in the Strip is truly safe. This led the military’s Arabic-language front man, Col. Avichay Adraee, to reiterate the need to evacuate on Wednesday.
"The IDF is determined to defeat Hamas and will operate in the Gaza City area with great force, just as it has throughout the Strip," Adraee said on X.
While Gazooks have trickled out of the city, some of them faster than others, the IDF has accused Hamas of blocking those who are trying to leave.
To that end, Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities stressed in a message on Wednesday that there was plenty of available space in the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in the enclave’s south to set up tents for those being displaced from Gaza City.
"In recent days, the Hamas terrorist organization has been running a false campaign aimed at preventing you, the residents of Gaza, from moving from the northern Gaza Strip to the south for your safety and protection," COGAT chief Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian said on his Arabic-language Facebook page.
"Contrary to Hamas’s claims, there are available spaces in the humanitarian area for setting up tents," Alian said. "Do not fall for Hamas’s lies, as it wants to use you as a human shield for its murderous goals.
"Hamas endangers you and harms your families. You must know the truth and follow the evacuation instructions. These are life-saving instructions," he added.
COGAT published graphics showing locations in the humanitarian zone where there were open areas for setting up tents.
SIDES PREPARE FOR BATTLE
Even as Paleostinian civilians slowly move elsewhere in the bombed-out Strip, the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported on Wednesday that the head of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza, Izz al-Din Haddad, had instructed his fighters to remain in Gaza City and gird for battle with Israel.
Haddad reportedly told fighters that he too will be on the front lines during the fighting, which he predicted would last for months.
The report said other terror groups had taken similar stances to Haddad and have warned their operatives that they will be punished if they leave the city.
Meanwhile in Israel, the IDF said on Wednesday that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir had approved operational plans for the campaign and had briefed senior officers on the matter.
He told officers that the military was "moving toward the next stages in the mission of toppling Hamas rule."
"That is our objective. We are going to bring down this regime, and nothing will stop us from carrying out the mission," he said, according to remarks provided by the IDF.
He stressed that the IDF’s two main goals remained "the release of the hostages," which he added was a "moral mission of the highest priority, critical and essential," and "the mission of toppling Hamas."
"These are the missions of our generation," Zamir told the officers.
"As I have said in the past, we will attack [Hamas] and pursue it everywhere, in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) and in other places, as we did in the last 24 hours," he said, referring to Tuesday’s strike in Qatar ...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Zamir said the IDF was "closely examining the shift in the balance of power in the Middle East."
"We have already been in a war for nearly two years, and now we are in its decisive stages," he added.
AID ENTERS NORTHERN, SOUTHERN GAZA
Strikes across other areas in the Strip continued as well on Wednesday, and the Hamas-run health ministry said hospitals had received 41 bodies of people killed in the past 24 hours, and 148 maimed people for treatment.
Separately, the health ministry said five people, including a child, had died of causes related to malnutrition over the past 24 hours, raising the overall reported toll of such deaths since the beginning of the war to 404, including 141 children.
The ministry, whose numbers cannot be verified, said the overall tally includes 126 Paleostinians — among them 26 children — who died of malnutrition-related causes since the UN declared that there was a famine in northern Gaza last month.
Israel, which paused the delivery of aid into Gaza for nearly three months until mid-May, but which has sought to ramp up assistance since, has rejected the report.
Israel has accused Hamas of hijacking aid shipments, and the UN of failing to deliver them.
COGAT said on Wednesday that nearly 280 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered the Strip on Tuesday through the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing in southern Gaza and the Zikim Border Crossing in the north.
According to COGAT, around 400 trucks’ worth of aid were collected by the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... and other international organizations from the Gaza side of the crossings Tuesday to be distributed, though a backlog of "hundreds of trucks" remains.
Deliveries of similar amounts of aid have been reported daily in the past few weeks.
The UN has said 600 trucks of aid need to be distributed each day in order to properly feed the Strip’s roughly two million people amid the war.
COGAT also said that "tankers of UN fuel entered for the operation of essential humanitarian systems" on Tuesday, and that it coordinated the entry and exit of humanitarian aid workers rotating in and out of Gaza.

Two Paleostinian teenagers were killed by Israeli soldiers in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank on Monday evening, Paleositinian media reported.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the two "posed a threat" to forces in the area.
WAFA, the official Paleostinian Authority news agency, named the two boys as Mohammad Sari Alawneh and Islam Abdul-Aziz Nouh Majarmeh, both 14.
A 17-year-old was also injured in the incident and rushed to the hospital, Wafa said.
The outlet said that IDF soldiers opened fire on a group of civilians who had attempted to return to their homes in the Jenin camp to retrieve some of their belongings.
Responding to requests for comment on the shooting, the military said it had launched an investigation into the incident.
According to the IDF, during activity in the camp, soldiers spotted a group of Paleostinians in an area that is declared prohibited by a military order.
"The suspects approached the forces and posed a threat to them," the IDF said.
The soldiers called on the Paleostinians to disperse, and after they "did not comply with the forces’ instructions," the troops began a "suspect arrest procedure," which included opening fire at the group.
In January, the military launched an offensive against terror operatives in the northern West Bank. The offensive, dubbed "Operation Iron Wall," began in the Jenin refugee camp, adjacent to the city of Jenin, and later expanded to include refugee camps near the city of Tulkarem in the western West Bank — Tulkarem and Nur Shams.
Residents of the camps have since been displaced and have not been allowed to return.
Last month, Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed that IDF troops will remain deployed to northern West Bank refugee camps at least until the end of the year.
The offensive came during a spike in West Bank violence, following the October 7, 2023, Hamas ..not a terrorist organization, even though it kidnaps people, holds hostages, and tries to negotiate by executing them,... onslaught. Since then, troops have arrested some 6,000 wanted Paleostinians across the West Bank, including more than 2,350 affiliated with Hamas.
According to the Paleostinian Authority health ministry, nearly 1,000 West Bank Paleostinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast majority of them were button men killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who clashed with troops, or bully boyz carrying out attacks.
During the same period, 53 others, including Israeli security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another eight members of the security forces were killed in festivities with terror operatives in the West Bank.

Police in London are investigating what appear to be four antisemitic attacks committed against Jewish institutions by the same person within less than two weeks.
Early Monday morning, a bucket of urine was thrown at a Jewish school in Golders Green, a prominent Jewish neighborhood in the city, Jewish News reported. CCTV showed the perpetrator was a man with a short beard wearing a hooded sweatshirt and shorts.
The previous day, security cameras caught what appeared to be the same man smearing a bag of feces onto the entrance of a synagogue.
Another synagogue was allegedly defaced in a similar manner on September 3, and a private home in the neighborhood was reported to have been smeared with feces on August 31.
The security organization Shomrim said it had confirmed that all four incidents were committed by the same man. The nonprofit said it was working closely with police investigators and providing support to those affected.
VANDALISM IN PRAGUE
Separately, a Jewish shop in Prague was vandalized for the third time in a month last week, with the words “Holocaust 2025″ and “Fascists” spray-painted across the door and front window.
Security footage showed a man wearing a sombrero vandalizing the Jewish E-Shop on Belgická Street in the Vinohrady district of Prague. Police have yet to identify a suspect, Czech media said.
Several weeks earlier, on August 10, the shop was attacked by what appeared to be the same person. Video cameras caught the man urinating on the storefront and then spray-painting the words, “Fuck in Nazi.”
On July 31, the words “Free Palestine” and “Benjamin Hitler” were written across the storefront, likely by the same person. The latter phrase is likely intended as a combination of the names of Benjamin Netanyahu and Adolf Hitler.
The attacks have generally come between 4-5 a.m., and have not involved structural damage beyond the painted words.
The chairman of Prague’s Jewish community, Pavel Král, said his organization has been working with security officials to investigate the incidents, which could carry a prison sentence of up to three years.
