[NYPOST] A gang of Colombian migrants colonists made off with millions of dollars worth of gems in heists in several states, funneling their booty to a Putnam Valley jewelry peddler who melted down and fenced the gold, federal prosecutors said this week.
The ''South American Theft Group'' operated in Florida, Georgia, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, and elsewhere targeting traveling jewelry salespeople, and stores, from September 2019 to August 2021, authorities said.
Their biggest score came in February 2020, when they robbed as much as $2.6 million in merchandise from a traveling jewelry salesperson in Boynton Beach, FL, court records show. The year before, they nabbed $730,000 in jewelry during a September theft from a car in Boca Raton, FL, and $125,000 during a November robbery in Miami Beach.
All the stolen merchandise was unloaded to Mark Simon, a Westchester County resident who allegedly paid cut-rate prices in cash and often traveled to Florida to meet them in hotel rooms, prosecutors said.
Simon, 56, allegedly paid just just $16,000 for $1 million in baubles stolen in a Dalton, GA, burglary, according to prosecutors and court records.

Simon may be a crook but he obviously has balls and excellent negotiating skills with dangerous people. Perhaps he has a future in contracting/procurement for the clandestine services?
[ShabelleMedia] Somali National Army (SNA) forces and allied Macawiisley militias are conducting military operations against al-Shabaab ... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord... in the Middle Shabelle region, security sources said on Sunday.
The mobilization follows heavy festivities on Saturday between government forces, local fighters, and al-Shabaab Lions of Islam in several villages near the coastal town of Cadale. Military officials confirmed that both sides suffered significant casualties.
The operations include targeted Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s on al-Shabaab positions, while armored military vehicles and additional troops have been deployed to strategic areas to drive the group from its remaining strongholds.
Somali Land Forces Commander General Sahal has urged troops and allied militias to intensify their offensive, describing the fight against al-Shabaab as a just war.
Saturday’s battles took place in villages including Laba Garas, Bursha Shiiq, and Sumadaale, all located near Cadale district.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked armed group, has waged an insurgency against Somalia’s central government for over a decade. Somali forces, supported by international partners, have been engaged in a large-scale campaign to push the Lions of Islam out of rural strongholds.
[ShabelleMedia] Somali security forces, including intelligence and police units, carried out a security operation overnight in Elasha Biyaha, a town on the southern outskirts of Mogadishu, officials said Sunday.
Senior officers leading the operation inspected businesses near the main road and urged residents to cooperate with security forces operating in the area.
The security deployment came after reports emerged earlier in the evening suggesting that Al-Shabaab militants had entered Elasha Biyaha, though no incidents of violence were reported.
The presence of the militant group in the area highlights ongoing security vulnerabilities. On Saturday, Al-Shabaab launched multiple attacks in the Lower Shabelle region, targeting the towns of Xaawo Cabdi and Awdheegle, where heavy fighting resulted in casualties.
The militant group has intensified its attacks during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, aiming to reclaim lost territory and increase pressure on Mogadishu, where the Somali government is based.
[ShabelleMedia] The security situation in the Xaawo Cabdi area near the capital of Somalia has rapidly deteriorated following an attack by the militant group Al-Shabaab this morning, causing significant casualties.
The brief but intense conflict began with explosions, followed by direct clashes between Al-Shabaab fighters and Somali forces, resulting in various injuries and damages.
Eyewitnesses told Shabelle Media Network that the militants entered Xaawo Cabdi, a region located between Lafoole and Ceelasha Biyaha in the Lower Shabelle region.
In response, the Somali government deployed helicopters to carry out airstrikes against the Al-Shabaab fighters in the area.
Al-Shabaab has recently increased its attacks in the Middle Shabelle region, shifting its focus to the Lower Shabelle, escalating violence in the region.
Earlier today, Al-Shabaab also carried out a suicide bombing targeting the Somali National Army’s headquarters in Awdheegle District.
The exact number of casualties from the bombing remains unclear, and officials are awaiting further updates from the Somali government.
[ShabelleMedia] Somali government forces, supported by local militias, successfully repelled attacks by the Islamist Death Eater group al-Shabaab ... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all ofwhich have enough problems without them... early this morning in Awdheegle, located in the Lower Shabelle region. Military activity has been reported in the area as fighting continued for several hours.
In a separate incident, al-Shabaab launched another assault in the Buursha Sheekh area of the Middle Shabelle region, resulting in direct combat that lasted for hours. Eventually, the Somali forces were able to push back the Death Eaters.
Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch shot Black Bart's gun out of his hand...... government forces conducted an operation in the Laba-Garas area of the Middle Shabelle region, where several al-Shabaab fighters were killed, according to state media reports. The Somali military has reinforced its presence in the region to enhance security and stability.
The recent festivities and operations have highlighted the intensifying battle against al-Shabaab in the Lower and Middle Shabelle regions.
[Garowe] Al-Shabaab militants carried out coordinated attacks in the country, on Saturday, officials said, noting that the group was targeting government officers and innocent civilians as it tried to seize more territories.
The militants were targeting government installations and the Somali National Army in Awdheegle, in the Lower Shabelle region, officials said, adding that heavy clashes ensued thereafter, leading to massive casualties.
The attack resulted in a heavy clash, with explosions accompanying the fighting, residents said, while acknowledging the intensity of the clashes which comes at the time the Somali National Army is pursuing the militants in the country.
Both sides involved in the confrontation are reported to have suffered casualties, including deaths and injuries, reflecting the instability in the volatile region, officials said. This was the second attack launched by the group this morning on two areas near the capital city.
Earlier, the al-Shabaab militants launched a pre-dawn attack Saturday on the Hawo Abdi area, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of Mogadishu, engaging in a heavy battle with government forces, according to residents.
With the help of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia along with the US Africa Command, the Somali National Army has managed to liberate several strategic towns across the country from the group.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud recently extended the amnesty for the members of the group who are willing to withdraw. The president said his administration was ready to recent those ready to defect from the notorious group.
Al-Shabaab group is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia which has struggled to install stability for the last three decades. The al-Shabaab however, has lost large swathes of rural central and southern regions.
🇺🇸🇾🇪 — REPORT: Yemeni media outlets are reporting that the residence of high ranking Houthi terrorist Hassan Sharaf al-Din, was struck in a US airstrike in Sana'a, resulting in his alleged death. However, these reports have yet to be officially confirmed.
[GEO.TV] Yemen's Huthis vowed to respond to deadly strikes on the capital Sanaa on Saturday after US President Donald Trump said Washington had launched a "decisive" action against the Iran-backed rebels.
"This aggression will not pass without a response, and our Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to confront escalation with escalation," the rebels' political bureau said in a statement on their Al-Masirah television.
What are they going to do, shoot missiles at ships in the Red Sea?
At least 9 killed in US-British airstrikes on Sana'a
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] At least nine people were killed and nine others maimed on Saturday when the American and British fighter jets launched a series of strikes on the Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. Trump Orders Military Strikes Against Houthi Terrorists in Yemen
[PJM] Do it. Break them. Completely.
President Donald Trump announced a decisive military response against Houthi militants in Yemen, declaring that the United States will no longer tolerate their attacks on American and allied shipping. "Today, I have ordered the United States Military to launch decisive and powerful Military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. The Houthis, he said, have been conducting "an unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American, and other, ships, aircraft, and drones."
Trump sharply criticized the previous administration’s failure to rein in the Iran-backed Houthis, arguing that Joe Biden’s weak response only emboldened the terrorist group. "Joe Biden’s response was pathetically weak, so the unrestrained Houthis just kept going," he said. As a result, "it has been over a year since a U.S.-flagged commercial ship safely sailed through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, or the Gulf of Aden." Even American warships haven’t been safe—Trump pointed out that "the last American Warship to go through the Red Sea, four months ago, was attacked by the Houthis over a dozen times."
Trump directly blamed Iran for funding the Houthis’ ongoing assaults. "Funded by Iran, the Houthi thugs have fired missiles at U.S. aircraft, and targeted our Troops and Allies," he said. These continuous attacks, he noted, have inflicted massive economic harm, stating, "These relentless assaults have cost the U.S. and World Economy many BILLIONS of Dollars while, at the same time, putting innocent lives at risk."
Trump vowed that American forces would respond with overwhelming force to ensure freedom of navigation. "The Houthi attack on American vessels will not be tolerated," he declared. "We will use overwhelming lethal force until we have achieved our objective." He described the Houthis as having "choked off shipping in one of the most important Waterways of the World, grinding vast swaths of Global Commerce to a halt, and attacking the core principle of Freedom of Navigation upon which International Trade and Commerce depends."
The military response is already underway, according to Trump. "Our brave Warfighters are right now carrying out aerial attacks on the terrorists’ bases, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air, and naval assets, and to restore Navigational Freedom," he announced. "No terrorist force will stop American commercial and naval vessels from freely sailing the Waterways of the World."
Trump then issued a stark warning to the Houthis: "To all Houthi terrorists, YOUR TIME IS UP, AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP, STARTING TODAY. IF THEY DON’T, HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE!"
He also sent a strong message to Tehran, demanding an immediate end to its support for the Houthis. "To Iran: Support for the Houthi terrorists must end IMMEDIATELY!" he declared. "Do NOT threaten the American People, their President, who has received one of the largest mandates in Presidential History, or Worldwide shipping lanes. If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable and, we won’t be nice about it!"
Note to Democrats: this is what strength looks like.
Residents in Sanaa said the strikes hit a building in a stronghold of the militant group.
“The explosions were violent and shook the neighborhood like an earthquake. They terrified our women and children,” one of the residents, who gave his name as Abdullah Yahia, told Reuters.
Footage shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows several airstrikes hitting areas near Sanaa International Airport, with reports of a number of explosions heard. The images show black smoke billowing into the sky over the area of the Sanaa airport complex, which includes a sprawling military facility.
According to Houthi-run AI Masirah TV, the strikes targeted a residential neighbourhood in the Shu'aub district, which lies just north of the capital.
US President Donald Trump announced the start of the operation earlier on Saturday, warning the Houthi attacks against Red Sea shipping needed to stop, or “Hell will rain down upon you.”

[KhaamaPress] The British police have arrested two men on suspicion of attacking Natiq Malikzada, an activist and opponent of the current regime in Afghanistan.
Malikzada, a 29-year-old Afghan refugee and an outspoken critic of extremism, was attacked in his room at a refugee hotel on February 13. He sustained injuries to his hand, shoulder, and chest during the assault.
Hampshire police issued a statement saying that two men, aged 25 and 29, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Malikzada, who came to the UK in September 2023 on a scholarship for a training course by the British Foreign Office, had a student visa. After completing his course in October 2024, he applied for asylum in the UK and stayed in the International Paters Hotel in Aldershot for more than two months.
The activist had previously warned about the Taliban ...Arabic for students... ’s influence in the UK. He had reported seeing Afghan refugees in the hotel who openly supported the Taliban.
Malikzada claims to have had arguments with pro-Taliban refugees in the hotel regarding women’s rights and the campaign to boycott Afghanistan’s cricket team.
The attack on Malikzada comes amid previous threats by some Taliban officials, who had warned opponents of the group living abroad. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of activists who oppose the Taliban and their supporters in exile.
The arrest of the two suspects marks an important step in addressing the rising tensions and threats faced by Afghan refugees who are critical of the Taliban. It also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by refugee communities, particularly those affected by the Taliban’s reach.

They attacked the victim and taxi driver on arrival, but the taxi driver was able to escape and raise the alarm.
Police found the three men hiding in nearby fields and they pleaded guilty to charges of kidnap.

They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... ’s (ISIS) second-in-command was captured in the same operation that killed her husband, the United States military said on Saturday.
"U.S. Central Command commends Iraqi Intelligence and Security forces on the successful operation leading to the capture and arrest of Chechen ISIS terrorist Umm Hussein, the wife of ISIS leader Abu Khadija, who was killed in a strike on March 13," read a statement from CENTCOM, the US military command in the Middle East.
Abu Khadija, whose full name is Abdullah Makki Muslih al-Rafiei, was killed in an operation in Anbar province carried out by Iraqi and American forces with Kurdish assistance.
CENTCOM said that two other ISIS members were captured in the operation and called it a testament to Iraq’s commitment to dismantling ISIS networks.
"CENTCOM, with our partners and allies, remain steadfast in our efforts to eliminate ISIS and prevent its resurgence," the statement said.
Rafiei was killed "after several years of investigation and relying on information from the Kurdistan Region Security Council, in coordination with the coalition and later with Iraqi federal forces," the Kurdistan Region Security Council said on Friday.
The United States in 2023 named Rafiei a Specially Designated Global Terrorist as an ISIS leader.
Abdullah Makki Muslih al-Rafiei, also known as Abu Khadija, was killed by a United States Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... in Anbar province. He was chief of global operations and emir of a top ISIS committee.
"As the Emir of ISIS’ most senior decision-making body, Abu Khadijah maintained responsibility for operations, logistics, and planning conducted by ISIS globally, and directs a significant portion of finance for the group’s global organization," the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.
Rafiei was a target for more than two years "and in the past six months, the noose has tightened around this terrorist," the Iraqi military’s Joint Operations Command said in a statement.
Intelligence about him was gathered during operations in the Anbar desert, raids of ISIS hideouts across the country, and from a person close to Rafiei who was captured by the Kurdistan Region Security Council and handed over to Iraqi forces.
His location was determined and he was killed at 6:30 Friday evening in a "successful airstrike in the Anbar desert," the Joint Operations Command said.
Video released by CENTCOM shows the moment of the airstrike on a moving vehicle.
Iraqi and American forces moved into the site of the airstrike and found the bodies of Rafiei and a second ISIS member, both wearing unwent kaboom!boom jackets and in possession of weapons, according to CENTCOM.
Iraqi forces said they also arrested seven ISIS suspects, including two women, accused of providing Rafiei with supplies. Based on intelligence gathered at the scene, five other wanted individuals were arrested in Erbil.
Rafiei was identified by matching his DNA with a sample collected from an earlier raid when he had escaped, CENTCOM said.

[IsraelTimes] Protests take place as Netanyahu convenes the cabinet a day after negotiators returned from Doha; families forum slam meeting as belated: ‘The opportunity is now’
Weekly pro-hostage deal and anti-government rallies drew thousands of people on Saturday night, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set to discuss negotiations for the release of hostages with Israeli officials who returned from Doha on Friday.
The rallies come a week after families and supporters began an open-ended round-the-clock encampment outside the IDF’s Kirya headquarters in Tel Aviv.
As part of the encampment, families held a Friday night Shabbat dinner at Hostages Square, across the street from the headquarters’ northern gate; and on Saturday morning, the encampment’s daily jog drew hundreds of people — a large uptick in participants.
The Hostage and Missing Families Forum, which invited the public to join "Operation Kirya Cordon," was holding its central rally in the evening at Hostages Square.
In a blurb on the rally, the forum demanded that Israel secure a deal to return the remaining 59 hostages "in a single, immediate release."
"The opportunity is now, and there won’t be another time," said the forum. "If an agreement is not reached soon, the living hostages may die in the tunnels, and we won’t be able to locate and return the dear departed for proper burial."
The Hostages Square rally was set to feature speeches by Etty Israeli, aunt of slain captive soldier Itay Chen; Yotam Cohen, brother of captive soldier Nimrod Cohen; Liran Berman, older brother of hostage twins Gali and Ziv Berman; Hadassa Lazar, sister of Shlomo Mantzur, whose remains were returned to Israel last month as part of the Gazoo

In addition to Hostages Square, dozens of smaller rallies were taking place around the country, including in Jerusalem, Kiryat Gat and the Sha’ar HaNegev Junction in the south.
A block away from Hostages Square, anti-government hostage families and supporters were holding their weekly protest outside the Kirya’s main entrance on Begin Road.
They were to be joined by protesters marching from an earlier anti-government demonstration at Habima Square, which aimed to highlight "Qatar ...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi... gate" — the investigation of alleged ties between Netanyahu’s top aides and the Gulf state.
The Habima Square protest was set to feature speeches from The Democrats ...every time you hear the phrase white people, white supremacy, white anything but paint, you're listening to a Democrat. Ask him/her/it to reimagine something for you; they do that a lot, though not well. They can hear a dog whistle a mile or two away. They want to stop continental drift and repeal the law of unintended side effects... chief Yair Golan, former deputy attorney general Dina Zilber, and Shikma Bressler, a prominent activist in demonstrations against the government’s overhaul plan to weaken the judiciary.
The protests were timed to take place during Netanyahu’s scheduled meeting with bigwigs at his office in Jerusalem to discuss developments in the hostage-ceasefire talks. The Families Forum has slammed the premier for not meeting with officials as soon as the negotiators returned on Friday.
The talks are said to be based on a "bridge proposal" by Steve Witkoff, the White House Middle East envoy, to extend the ceasefire’s first phase until April 19 and continue the exchange of living Israeli hostages for Paleostinian prisoners.
Witkoff said Friday that Hamas ..the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,... was making a "very bad bet" if it did not accept the offer.
Israel has accused Hamas of evading Witkoff’s proposal, most recently after the terror group on Thursday offered to release US-Israeli captive IDF soldier Edan Alexander and the remains of four other dual nationals. The Families Forum slammed the offer as "passport-based" discrimination.
An Arab diplomat told The Times of Israel on Friday that Hamas’s offer was based on its talks with US hostages envoy Adam Boehler on March 4. The Hamas-US meeting fired up the rubes in Israel, which reportedly leaked the talks’ existence in a bid to thwart them.
Alexander, 20, is slated for release in a potential second phase of the hostage deal, which would see Hamas release the remaining 24 hostages still thought to be alive. All of them are men kidnapped on October 7, 2023, when the terror group invaded southern Israel to kill some 1,200 people and take 251 hostages, sparking the war in Gaza.

In a brief statement, the Ministry of Health reported that nine bodies of deaders and a number of injuries, including serious cases, were transferred to the Indonesian Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
Local sources said an Israeli drone struck a car at the al-Attar junction in the town of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip.

On Friday, 4 citizens were martyred in Israeli shelling in the Zeitoun neighborhood, south of Gaza City. A fisherman was martyred in northwest of Gaza City, and six civilians, including two women, were maimed in an Israeli shelling that targeted eastern and central Rafah city, south of Gaza Strip.
Israel says it targeted terror operatives in Strip, while Palestinians say aid workers, journalists among dead.
At least nine people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya on Saturday, Palestinian media reported. The Shehab news agency cited the Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC) as saying that three journalists were among the dead.
The IDF confirmed carrying out the strikes, saying it targeted terror operatives “that posed a threat to IDF troops in the area.”
In Gaza, medics said the strike hit a car, with several people critically injured and casualties inside and outside the vehicle. Witnesses told Reuters that the people in the car were with the Al-Khair Foundation in Beit Lahiya, and that they were accompanied by journalists and photographers at the time of the strike.
The IDF has said in the past that the Al-Khair Foundation, a Muslim non-profit based in Britain and Turkey, is an aid group that transfers funds to terror groups in Gaza “under the guise of humanitarian activity” and that the organization has employed at least one senior Hamas official.
Ah hah!
The IDF said it identified “two terrorists operating a drone that posed a threat to IDF troops in the area.” The two operatives were targeted in a strike, and a short while later, “a number of additional terrorists collected the drone operating equipment and entered a vehicle,” the military said.
The group of operatives that had collected the equipment was targeted in a second strike, the IDF added. One of those killed in the strike was named by Palestinian reports as Mahmoud Isleem, a drone photographer who has worked for Turkey’s Anadolu news agency.
In a statement, the Hamas terror group said the strikes were a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire.
Earlier Saturday, the IDF said it carried out a strike against three terror operatives who were spotted trying to plant bombs in the ground in the Netzarim Corridor area of the central Gaza Strip, close to where troops were operating.
Israeli forces are still deployed to a buffer zone along the Gaza border amid the ceasefire, and the IDF has repeatedly warned Palestinians against approaching the area.
The IDF details the identities of six Palestinian terror operatives it says were killed in airstrikes in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya yesterday, including a terrorist who participated in the October 7 onslaught.
According to Palestinian media, the strikes killed nine, including journalists.
The IDF says that a first strike targeted two operatives using a drone to advance attacks on troops in Gaza.
“Based on intelligence information regarding the terror activity in the area, it was determined that the drone was in constant use by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organisation, including during its use [on Saturday],” the IDF says.
A second strike was carried out against another group of operatives who collected the drone equipment, according to the military.
The IDF says the strikes killed “several terrorists, including terrorists who were operating under the guise of journalists.”
They are named by the IDF as: Mustafa Mohammed Shaaban Hamed, a Hamas terrorist who invaded Israel on October 7, 2023; Mahmoud Yahya Rashdi as-Saraj, a member of Hamas’s engineering forces; Bilal Mahmood Fuad Abu Matar, a Hamas operative operating under the guise of a photographer; Mahmoud Imad Hassan Isleem, a member of Hamas’s Zeitoun Battalion, operating under the guise of a journalist; Suheib Bassem Khaled Najar, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative who was released in the recent hostage-ceasefire deal with Hamas; and Mohammed Alaa Suhbi al-Jafir, a Hamas operative.
[IsraelTimes] The IDF says troops killed three terror operatives and detained over 100 wanted Palestinians during operations in the West Bank over the past week.
Soldiers also seized dozens of weapons and questioned dozens more suspects.
The IDF has been carrying out a major offensive in the northern West Bank, dubbed Operation Iron Wall, since January 21.
In the past week, the offensive focused on the towns of Arraba and Qabatiya near Jenin, the military adds.
[IsraelTimes] IDF says Hezbollah member hit in the north
Lebanese media reported an Israeli drone strike on a car in the southern town of Borj al-Mlouk, located just north of the Israeli border town of Metula. Two people were killed in the strike, Lebanese media said.
The IDF confirmed carrying out that airstrike as well, saying it targeted a Hezbollah operative who was “engaged in terror activity.”
In Lebanon, the military said it “struck a Hezbollah terrorist who took part in terrorist activity in the area of Kafr Kila in southern Lebanon.”
The strikes in Lebanon and Gaza come amid ceasefires on both war fronts, but Israel has said it will continue to act against terror operatives who are in breach of the truces and who pose a threat to its forces.

[Regnum] At least three people were killed in a powerful explosion in southern Syria's Latakia. This was reported by the Al Watan publication.
It is noted that the explosion occurred in a four-story building in the Er-Raml district. People remain under the rubble.
Civil defense teams have begun clearing away debris, and medics are helping the victims.
As reported by the Regnum news agency, on March 6, clashes broke out in Latakia between supporters of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and forces of the country's new government. Clashes also began in the province of Tartus. The republic's authorities sent troops into these regions. According to the Kurdish television channel Rudaw on March 8, more than 500 civilians were killed in armed clashes in Syria.
On March 9, fighting broke out in the port city of Baniyas in Tartus province, where pro-Assad forces attacked a gas power plant to destroy the city's energy infrastructure, while government forces tried to retake the facility.
By March 11, Syrian government forces had stopped attempts at attacks by armed supporters of former President Assad, said the country's Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdel Ghani.
[IsraelTimes] Unwent kaboom! ordnance triggered a blast in the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, a war monitor says, after state media reported three deaths in the earth-shattering kaboom.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights describes the blast as an "accident" resulting from a resident’s attempt to dismantle unwent kaboom! ordnance in the building.
Ordnance from Syria’s 13-year civil war exploded in the coastal city of Latakia, collapsing a building and killing at least 16 people, the Syrian Civil Defense said Sunday.
The paramedic group, known as the White Helmets, said it searched through debris overnight and recovered 16 bodies, including five women and five children. Eighteen people were injured, the paramedics said.
Images from Syria’s SANA news agency showed a plume of smoke rising from Latakia’s crowded southern neighborhood of Al-Rimal, and a pile of rubble where the building had once stood.
The United Nations said in February that about a hundred people have been killed from exploding ordnance during the last 13 years.
Since Assad’s ouster, over 1,400 unexploded devices have been safely disposed of across Syria, and 138 minefields and contaminated areas have been identified in Idleb, Aleppo, Hama, Deir Ezzor and Latakia, according to the UN.
Aid agency Humanity and Inclusion warned last month that between 100,000 and 300,000 of the roughly one million munitions used during the war never detonated.
[IsraelTimes] Defense minister says ‘indefinite’ stay is needed to protect northern residents, tells army to dig in for a long stint; IDF hits Hezbollah target in Beqaa Valley
Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Friday that the Israel Defense Forces would remain deployed at five strategic points in southern Leb ...Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects.... "indefinitely," regardless of negotiations over 13 disputed points on the border.
During an assessment the day before with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and other top military officials, Katz "clarified that the IDF will remain at the five points that control the buffer zone in Lebanon, indefinitely, for the sake of protecting the residents of the north, and this is without any connection to future negotiations on points of dispute on the border," his office said in a statement Friday.
Katz instructed the IDF to fortify its positions at the five strategic points and prepare to stay there for a long period, his office added.
Israel and Lebanon held direct talks earlier in the week to resolve long-running issues about their shared border, and Israel returned five Lebanese prisoners it had arrested in the fighting in what Jerusalem said was a gesture of good will.
Israel has remained at the five points ever since a ceasefire began on November 27, 2024, halting more than a year of hostilities initiated by the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, including two months of full-blown war during which Israel sent in ground troops across the northern border.

The Hezbollah facility has been hit several times by the Israeli Air Force in recent months.
Under the US-mediated ceasefire, Israel was to gradually withdraw from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah would move its forces from the border to be replaced by the Lebanese army. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds... Israel has since accused Hezbollah of violating the terms by remaining in the border area and the Lebanese army of not properly deploying.
The IDF has carried out numerous strikes on Hezbollah targets, including some deep into Lebanese territory, a preventive right it says is enshrined in the ceasefire.

...back at the barn, Bossy's udder had begun to ache... Lebanon named a new head of the armed forces to succeed Joseph Aoun, who was appointed president earlier this year.
"Brigadier General Rodolphe Haykal was named commander in chief of the armed forces," Minister of Information Paul Morcos said after a cabinet meeting, also confirming several other security appointments.
Haykal, 56, was made the army’s chief of operations last June, having previously served as the commander of the army sector south of the Litani River, according to the army’s website.
That area bore the brunt of the near-daily exchange of fire between Israel and the Hezbollah terror group during more than a year of hostilities that ended with the November 27 ceasefire.
Haykal is expected to play a key role in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, a security source told AFP, adding that he was Aoun’s favored candidate for the post.
According to Lebanon’s power-sharing system, the army chief must be a Maronite Christian.
Morcos also announced earlier the appointment of the heads of the internal security, general security and state security apparatuses, as well as the approval of the defense ministry’s request to recruit 4,500 soldiers to reinforce troops in the south, where the army is deploying alongside UN peacekeepers as part of the ceasefire agreement.
