Somalia pirates demand $10 million from Chinese fishing crew
[Garowe] Somalia pirates are seemingly back to deep waters following the seizure of a Chinese fishing vessel from which they are demanding at least $10 million in ransom, which creates fear within the Indian Ocean waters.

Presently, traditional elders representing the pirates and representation from the crew are in negotiations over the amount required to free their vessel with 18 crew members, with the owner giving an "unacceptable" offer.

A local representative of the police in the Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
region of Somalia told the media 10 days ago that they believed the vessel was seized in late November. They said the pirates had continued to move the vessel between various locations to avoid detection by the coasties.

Further reports indicate that the vessel and its crew could have been betrayed since two Somali guards were sailing in it. The vessel is registered in Taiwan, a breakaway region of China, and its license is said to have expired.

The EU operation Atalanta reported on December 5 that it had been informed and investigated. The incident was labeled an alleged hijacking and later an armed robbery because the vessel was remaining within Somali coastal waters according to Atalanta.

Armed individuals with AK 47 were sighted in the vessel but no injuries were reported to date. The initial ransom demand was $5 million but the owners had agreed to part with $300000 before it was raised to $1 million.

Atalanta reports that it has documented reports of 20 attacks in 2024 including ones that were not successful in seizing vessels. It however notes that there is an unknown number of unreported/unconfirmed incidents involving dhows and smaller vessels, AP reports.

The hijackers also shared photos on social media of their captives surrounded by gunnies on the ship’s deck. The vessel was first taken to Xaafuun in Puntland..A Somali government official said the vessel was issued a fishing license by Puntland in 2020 before its expiry..

Turkey Starts Construction Of Rocket Launch Site in Somalia
Treating Somalia like a colony.
[Garowe] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
is set to construct a rocket launch facility in Somalia, the Horn of Africa nation's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced on Wednesday, signaling a boost for Ankara's long-range rocket testing program.

Speaking at an event in Mogadishu, Mohamud highlighted the economic benefits of the project, stating it would generate significant employment and revenue. He noted that Somalia's strategic position at the eastern tip of mainland Africa makes it an ideal location for launching rockets toward the Indian Ocean, minimizing risks of debris affecting populated areas or neighboring countries, according to a Bloomberg report from September.

This development aims to elevate Turkey's profile in the global space race, traditionally led by established powers. Although details such as the exact location of the facility were not disclosed by Mohamud, the initiative underscores Turkey's growing technological and diplomatic influence in the region.

"I personally believe that the importance of Somalia hosting a launchpad for Ottoman Turkish satellites is even more significant than the billions of dollars and opportunities that the project will generate," Mohamud stated, emphasizing the geopolitical significance of the venture.

Turkey has been actively expanding its footprint in Somalia over the last decade, not only through defense and infrastructure projects but also with ambitions in hydrocarbon exploration. The country has also played a role in mediating between the government in Mogadishu and the leadership of Somaliland
...Republic of Somaliland is an unrecognised sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, recognised internationally as a de jure part of Somalia. It is located in the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden with approximately 5.7 million residents as of 2021. The capital and largest city is Hargeisa. The government regards itself as the successor state to British Somaliland, which united from 1960 to 1991 with the Trust Territory of Somaliland (the former Italian Somaliland) to form the Somali Republic. Under the Siad Barre regime, Somaliadestroyed ninety percent of Hargeisa Per international law, once you're in, you gotta stay in, no matter how bad it smells....
, the semi-autonomous region seeking recognition as an independent state.

This project is part of Turkey's broader strategy to strengthen ties with Somalia, which is still recovering from decades of clan warfare and seeking to rebuild its economy and governance structures.

US authorizes military sales of more than $5 billion to Egypt
[IsraelTimes] Cairo has become an increasingly close partner to Washington in mediating the Gaza crisis, but human rights concerns persist

The United States government on Friday authorized the sale of more than $5 billion in military equipment to Egypt, which has become an increasingly close partner in mediating the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...

concerns.

The State Department informed Congress it had approved the sale of $4.69 billion in equipment for 555 US-made M1A1 Abrams tanks operated by Egypt, $630 million in 2,183 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, and $30 million in precision-guided munitions.

The sale "will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major non-NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and structure....
ally country that continues to be an important strategic partner in the Middle East," according to a statement.

US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. This Is A Man That Does Not Seem Demented...
took office in 2021 vowing a harder line on Egypt over human rights concerns under President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, but his administration has repeatedly gone ahead with arms deals with Egypt.

Cairo is one of the largest recipients of US security aid since its peace treaty with Israel in 1979.

Egypt and the United States have worked increasingly closely since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in 2023, with Cairo playing a mediating role.

Amid international criticism, Egypt has in the last two years pardoned hundreds of political prisoners.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
rights groups say at least three times that many have been arrested over the same period.

In addition to the sales to Egypt, the State Department also authorized $295 million in equipment for Taiwan, $170 million in bombs and missiles for Morocco, and $130 million in uncrewed aircraft systems and armored vehicles to Greece.

The Taiwan authorizations were announced shortly after Biden announced $571.3 million in new military aid to the self-ruled island, which China claims as part of its territory and has vowed to retake — by force, if necessary.

Congress can still block the sales, but such attempts are usually unsuccessful.

USS Gettysburg mistakenly shoots down Navy F/A-18 over Red Sea
[USNI] This post has been updated with additional information on the timing of the incident.

Two U.S. Navy aviators are safe after their two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet was shot down by an American ship by mistake, according to a late Saturday statement from U.S. Central Command.
“Whoops! Sorry, guys.”
The Super Hornet, assigned to aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), was flying over the Red Sea when guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG-64) fired upon it, according to the CENTCOM statement.

“Both pilots were safely recovered. Initial assessments indicate that one of the crew members sustained minor injuries,” reads a statement from CENTCOM.
“This incident was not the result of hostile fire, and a full investigation is underway.”

A Navy official told USNI News the incident occurred around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday or about 7 p.m. East Coast time on Saturday. The Super Hornet was assigned to Carrier Air Wing One, and embarked aboard Truman, an official told USNI News. While the CENTCOM statement didn’t specify the squadron, the only two-seat F/A-18F squadron embarked aboard Truman are the “Red Rippers” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11 from Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.

The strike group is tasked as part of the U.S.-led Operation Prosperity Guardian, the mission to protect merchant traffic in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks from Yemen. Previous strike groups and independently deployed U.S. guided-missile warships have intercepted dozens of drones, guided cruise missiles and ballstic missiles as part of their mission.

Over the weekend, U.S. forces attacked the Yemeni capital of Sanna striking a missile storage facility and a command and control node, according to a Saturday statement from CENTCOM.

“CENTCOM forces conducted the deliberate strikes to disrupt and degrade Houthi operations, such as attacks against U.S. Navy warships and merchant vessels in the Southern Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb, and Gulf of Aden,” reads the statement.

Gettysburg, homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., is assigned to Truman and entered the Red Sea with the carrier last week, according to the USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker.

The commander of the cruiser is the air defense commander for the strike group and is responsible for detecting and defeating threats to the carrier and its escorts.

The cruiser has more than 100 vertical launch cells capable of firing missiles capable of intercepting a variety of threats. Officials have not yet disclosed the weapon the crew of the cruiser used in the incident.

Truman, its escorts and airwing deployed from Norfolk on Sept 23. Before entering the Red Sea, the strike group operated in the Atlantic off Norway and the U.K.

The following is the complete statement from U.S. Central Command.

TAMPA, Fla. – Two U.S. Navy pilots ejected safely over the Red Sea during the early morning hours of December 22 when their F/A-18 fighter aircraft was shot down in an apparent case of friendly fire.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64), which is part of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, mistakenly fired on and hit the F/A-18, which was flying off the USS Harry S. Truman.

Both pilots were safely recovered. Initial assessments indicate that one of the crew members sustained minor injuries. This incident was not the result of hostile fire, and a full investigation is underway.

Not anymore.

I am quite honestly saying prayers of thanks that the F-18 crew is alive. I do not, however, have a great deal of faith in the USN to sort this out without simply court-martialing the lowest ranking enlisted man in the chain.

#5  And on further reflection what aircraft was the Gettysburg attempting to shoot down when they hit our own aircraft? Didn’t think the Houthis had aircraft just drones and missiles. If they were attempting to hit a drone they pretty clearly missed (hitting our plane instead) - what happened to the drone they were aiming at? Hit by another missile, simply missed or hit an unreported target. There has been so much prevarication and propaganda lately that my instinct is to presume the worst after any press release

#11  The Gettysburg uses AEGIS to track contacts and can fire missiles based on its solutions. Normally, another type of radar paints the target in terminal after the aircraft can’t escape. My info is last century, but I offer it up as clarification. This isn’t like a fire and forget harpoon shot. It was guided in.

#12  Something not quite right about this. Not aviation smart but that the crew ejected safely to me implies a level of damage from a smaller warhead like that found on MANPADS rather than a U.S. Naval SM-2.

The SM-2 "...carries a 64 kg blast fragmentation warhead..."

"FIM-92 Stinger: The warhead of the FIM-92 Stinger contains 2.25 lb (1.02 kg) of HTA-3 explosive.
Mistral MANPADS: The Mistral MANPADS has a 3 kg warhead.
9K32 Strela-2: The warhead of the 9K32 Strela-2 has a weight of 1.15 kg (2.5 lb).
Misagh-3: The warhead of the Misagh-3 has a weight of 1.5 kg (3.3 lb).
QW-11: The warhead of the QW-11 has a weight of 1.42 kg."

Wiki cites.

#13  NoMoreBS if it was a SM-2 the pilot was trying to nock like hell and most likely the missile got a maximum range hit and was enough to make the plane unflyable.

#14  Exactly what time and date was the F-18 shot down? (Israel time if possible please.)

Exactly what time and date (Israel time) did the missile from Yemen hit Tel Aviv?

I'm thinking that there was a highly tense situation and the USS Gettysburg was tracking and shot at a missile or something from Yemen and the F-18 just happen to meet the 'Randy Johnson fastball vs the pigeon' missile, i.e. was in the wrong place at the wrong time!

#15  I just checked. Hodhod Yemen News has the following Houthi press release today, claiming the shootdown:

The Yemeni Forces released the following statement:

The armed forces succeeded in thwarting an American-British attack on our country, as the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and a number of its destroyers were targeted in conjunction with the start of the aggressive attack yesterday evening on our country.

The operation was carried out with eight winged missiles and 17 drones. The operation, with the help of God Almighty, led to:

First: The downing of an F-18 plane while the destroyers were trying to confront the Yemeni missiles and missiles.

Second: Most enemy warplanes left Yemeni airspace for international waters in the Red Sea to defend the aircraft carrier while it was being targeted.

Third: The failure of the hostile attack on Yemeni territory

Fourth: The withdrawal of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman after being targeted from its previous location towards the northern Red Sea, after being subjected to more than one attack by the missile force, the naval forces, and the unmanned air force.

While the Yemeni armed forces confirm their success in confronting the American-British aggression and thwarting it, they reaffirm their readiness to confront any American-British-Israeli foolishness during the coming period.

It warns the Israeli and American enemy against the aggression against Yemen and that the Yemeni armed forces will use their full right to defend Yemen and continue to support the Palestinian people until the aggression against Gaza is stopped and the siege on it is lifted.

[German] Police warned a year ago that Xmas market maniac was planning an atrocity - did nothing more than take screenshots of his twisted online threats
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The Saudi doctor who killed five people by ploughing his BMW into a Christmas market vowed to slaughter '20 Germans' last year.

German police were warned about 'unstable' Dr Taleb Al-Abdulmohsen in September last year, but did nothing more than take screenshots of his twisted online threats.

The 50-year-old psychiatrist rammed his SUV into a packed market in the town of Magdeburg on Friday night, leaving a nine-year-old boy and four adults dead and injuring more than 200 people, 40 of them critically.

Footage showed scenes of horror with the car cutting through families who barely had time to turn their heads.

A woman reported his online threat, made in Arabic, to Berlin police, as well as the German migration authorities. But no action was taken. Last night she said Al-Abdulmohsen 'openly threatened the lives of Germans but police didn't arrest him or take any action. This could have been prevented if the police had done their job properly.'

Al-Abdulmohsen had bypassed security bollards and used an emergency corridor – which should have been blocked for anything other than ambulances and police vehicles – to enter the market. He launched his attack just after 7pm local time in Germany, as thousands of shoppers gathered at the centre of Magdeburg. Driving slowly at first, the blue SUV turned in to an alleyway where hundreds of shoppers were browsing stalls and sipping mulled wine.

He then pointed his vehicle directly at the crowd and ploughed forward. As shoppers fled in panic, the driver turned another corner and drove out of the market. An off-duty policeman pursued the BMW until he came to a halt outside Magdeburg shopping centre, where he was arrested at gunpoint by armed officers.

As the five deaths were confirmed in a sombre press conference last night, details emerged of the youngest victim, who was nine, and was out shopping with his mother.

As Germany grieved last night, anger was also boiling up, with signs that troublesome days lie ahead. More than 1,000 far-Right thugs descended on Magdeburg to protest against the attack, with anger visible on their faces. Although no violence broke out, there were fears that more such protests lay ahead.
far-Right thugs? anger visible? Someone needs a re-education beating
As Al-Abdulmohsen was being questioned, it was revealed that he was on drugs during the attack, but police did not give more details. Authorities said that his mental and physical states were being examined. The prosecutor said that the medic's grievance about how Germany was treating Saudi dissident asylum seekers was part of the investigation as a possible motive.

Although his Saudi background and a vehicle attack on a Christian event had all the signs of an Islamist terror attack, Al-Abdulmohsen's background has shown that it was 'unusual and contradictory'.

Peter Neumann, professor of security studies at King's College, London, said: 'He is against Islam, he supports [the Right-wing] AfD party, he is not an Isis supporter, but he did an attack like an Isis terrorist. So it is a bit of a cliché to say it, but this all may suggest mental health issues.'

There were also claims made on social media that the Saudis had warned the German authorities at least three times about Al-Abdulmohsen, but were ignored.

But Professor Neumann said that the claims could be part of a Saudi disinformation campaign, as Al-Abdulmohsen was a staunch critic of the country's rulers.

Al-Abdulmohsen was a high-profile Saudi ex-Muslim who openly made his threats on social media where he endorsed far-Right leaders such as Britain's Tommy Robinson. His warning of a killing spree last year followed a dispute with a German refuge for atheist asylum seekers. He claimed staff there sexually assaulted a number of Saudi women.

In a tweet he said: 'Would you blame me if I randomly killed 20 Germans because of what Germany is doing against the Saudis?'

And in August this year, he posted in Arabic: 'I assure you that if Germany wants a war, we will fight it. If Germany wants to kill us, we will slaughter them, die, or go to prison with pride.

'Because we have exhausted all peaceful means and all we have received from the police, state security, the prosecution, the judiciary, and the Ministry of the Interior is more crimes against us. Peace is of no use with them.'

He also accused the country of allowing too many Syrian terrorists to enter the country.

He tweeted: 'Germany's goal has become clear: to spread Islam in Europe. They are attacking political movements critical of Islam by infiltrating them with corrupt people, including addicts, prostitutes, and thieves, in order to corrupt the movement from within.'
Twitchy has thoughts:
We're with Peter Neumann and are also very skeptical of Taleb al-Abdulmohsen being Islamophobic.

Saudi political commentator Salman Al-Ansari posted a thread about the alleged killer, noting that he fled Saudi Arabia in 2006 after being accused of rape and implicated in serious crimes. Saudi Arabia tried to extradite him from Germany, but Germany denied the request, citing "human rights concerns."

…portraying himself as a victim of persecution rather than a fugitive from justice.

Iranian/German entrepreneur Marai Salmassi posted a very interesting video to X suggesting the same scenario:

… permits lying and deception to advance Islamic objectives.

In reality, he is a radical Shia Muslim, as evidenced by his name and numerous tweets and chat leaks circulating on Arabic-speaking platforms like X. Disturbingly, his plans to carry out mass killings of Germans were brought to the attention of German authorities by a Saudi woman. Tragically, the police ignored her warnings.

The Grand Turk
UN Report: Turkey forcibly deports over 300 Eritreans
[Garowe] The government of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...

...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. ...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. n migrants colonists, exposing them to gross human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
violations, the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
said, while documenting specific cases.

United Nations Special Rapporteurs asked the government of Turkey about "alleged arbitrary detention and forcible return" of Eritrean migrants colonists and the imminent risk of forcible return of an additional group of approximately 50 Eritreans.

The team insisted that the deportations by Turkey violated fundamental principles of human rights and refugee law. Under this, the host nation is not supposed to deport individuals to a country where they are not safe.

The principle was outlined in international law and the Convention Against Torture, which Turkey ratified in 1988 and prohibits deporting individuals to countries where they are at risk of torture or other gross human rights violations.

"Detention in Eritrea places individuals at a heightened risk of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment," the rapporteurs said, adding that many deportees have reportedly been detained or conscripted into military service. Eritrea’s indefinite conscription system has been widely linked to forced labor, sexual violence, and inhumane treatment.

Back at home, the Eritreans who have been deported faced torture and enforced disappearances, the rapporteurs said in their report, which could further expose Turkey's foreign policy.

The UN also condemned conditions at Turkey’s Aydin Repatriation Center, where 50 Eritrean migrants colonists currently remain detained. According to the letter, detainees have reported being beaten by guards, held in metal container cells under conditions of extreme heat, and denied medical care. They also reported a lack of legal representation and contact with their families.

The UN experts urged Turkey to immediately halt deportations to Eritrea, improve conditions for detained migrants colonists, and conduct individual assessments of asylum claims. Turkey’s response has not yet been made public.

The letter was authored by three UN special rapporteurs: Mohammed Abdelsalam Babiker, special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea; Gabriella Citroni, chair-rapporteur of the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances; and Gehad Madi, special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants colonists.

Strip that would be exchanged during a hostage-ceasefire deal, according to a Saturday television news report citing Israeli officials.

Channel 12 news first reported that the terror group had yet to hand over the list of names, but said that nevertheless, Israeli officials believe that progress is being made in the ongoing negotiations.

Earlier on Saturday, Hebrew media reported that the head of the IDF intelligence corps, Maj. Gen. Shlomi Binder, visited Cairo over the weekend for meetings with his Egyptian counterparts. The report clarified that the visit was not focused on the hostage talks, but rather security cooperation.

Channel 12 reported later that Israel denied that Binder had visited Cairo.

and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine did convene in Cairo on Friday to discuss the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release deal.

In a readout of the meeting, Hamas said the possibility of reaching a deal "is closer than ever if the enemy stops setting new conditions."

All three terror groups are believed to be holding hostages throughout Gaza, kidnapped during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 massacre in southern Israel.

The factions "stressed everyone’s keenness to stop the aggression against our people," the Hamas statement said, apparently referring to its demand for a permanent ceasefire.

The nature of the ceasefire deal is the main issue of contention in the talks, with Hamas demanding a permanent end to the fighting, while Israel is seeking a temporary pause during which some of the hostages would be released followed by a resumption of its fighting to finish dismantling the terror group’s military and governing capabilities, an Arab diplomat told The Times of Israel earlier this week.

Israel has sought to have the agreement refer to the ceasefire as one that "end[s] the military operation," while Hamas is insisting that the text states that the ceasefire will "end the war."

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his stance against a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, saying he would only agree to a temporary pause as part of a hostage release deal, and reiterating his plan to see Hamas completely dismantled.

"I’m not going to agree to end the war before we remove Hamas," he said. "We’re not going to leave them in power in Gaza, 30 miles from Tel Aviv. It’s not going to happen."

as leader of the Paleostinian Authority. He is especially favored by the younger generation, who perceive him as untainted by the PA’s corruption and collaboration with Israel.

Following the PMO’s vow not to release Barghouti, Channel 12 reported that Israel was insisting on presenting a list to the mediators with the names of 70 to 100 security prisoners who it would refuse to release as part of an agreement.

Numerous attempts to reach a new hostage deal since a week-long truce in November, 2023, saw the release of 105 hostages have repeatedly failed, with Israel and Hamas accusing each other of sabotaging efforts and refusing to budge on key issues.

However,

the current round of negotiations has seemingly come close to securing a deal that would guarantee the release of at least some of the 96 hostages kidnapped during Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel last year and still being held captive in Gaza.

Tehran protests US arrests of Iranians linked to bombing of American base
[IsraelTimes] January attack in Jordan killed three American troops; ‘We consider these arrests in violation of international law,’ says Iranian foreign ministry

Iran has summoned the Swiss ambassador in Tehran, who represents American interests in the country, and a senior Italian diplomat, over the arrest by the US of two Iranian nationals this week, Iranian media reported on Saturday.

“We consider these arrests in violation of international law,” Iranian media quoted the foreign ministry as saying, adding that the Swiss ambassador and the Italian charge d’affaires were asked to pass on Iran’s protest.

US prosecutors charged the two men on Monday with illegally exporting sensitive technology to Iran that they said was used in a January drone attack in Jordan that killed three US service members.

Federal prosecutors in Boston charged Mohammad Abedini, the co-founder of an Iranian-based company, and Mahdi Sadeghi, an employee of Massachusetts-based semiconductor manufacturer Analog Devices ADI.O, with conspiring to violate US export laws.

Prosecutors also charged Abedini, also known as Mohammad Abedininajafabadi,
…if that were my name, I’d shorten it, too…
with providing material support to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that resulted in death. The US designates the Revolutionary Guards a foreign terrorist organization.

Abedini, a resident of both Switzerland and Iran, was arrested in Milan, Italy, at the request of the US government, which will seek his extradition. Sadeghi, an Iranian-born naturalized American citizen living in Natick, Massachusetts, was also arrested.

“We often cite hypothetical risk when we talk about the dangers of American technologies getting into dangerous hands,” US Attorney Joshua Levy in Massachusetts said. “Unfortunately, in this situation, we are not speculating.”

At a press conference in Boston, Levy said the FBI had been able to trace sophisticated navigation equipment used in the drone to Abedini’s Iranian company, SDRA, which manufactured the navigation system.

Levy said Abedini had used a company in Switzerland as a front to procure American technologies from Sadeghi’s employer including accelerometers and gyroscopes that were then sent to Iran.

During a brief court hearing, Sadeghi was ordered detained pending a further hearing after a prosecutor called him a flight risk. His court-appointed lawyer did not respond to request for comment. A lawyer for Abedini could not be identified.

Court papers do not identify Sadeghi’s employer by name, but Analog Devices in a statement confirmed he worked for the company.

Analog Devices said it was cooperating with law enforcement and was “committed to preventing unauthorized access to and misuse of our products and technology.”

The January 28 drone attack on a US outpost in Jordan called Tower 22, near the Syrian border, was the first deadly strike against American forces since the Israel-Hamas war erupted after Hamas’s October 7 onslaught in southern Israel.

The three Army Reserve soldiers killed in the attack were all from Georgia. They were Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Moffett.

The White House later said the attack was facilitated by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization of hardline Iran-backed militant groups. Iran has denied involvement in the attack.

Following the attack, the US launched a huge counterstrike against 85 sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Iranian-backed militia and bolstered Tower 22’s defenses.

Iranian government said scrambling for solutions as energy crisis plagues country
[IsraelTimes] Outdated and underfunded energy sector’s problems further compounded by depleted gas reserves caused by attack on two major pipelines back in February

An energy crisis in Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has left its leadership scrambling to find a solution after schools and government institutions across the country were forced to close their doors last week due to widespread power outages that Tehran, in its current state, is ill-equipped to deal with.
"Christmas break is early!"
After a summer of blackouts, the energy crisis in the Islamic Theocratic Republic has become exacerbated by harsh winter conditions, and severe cold, snow and air pollution have added to the woes of an energy sector unable to deal with seasonal surges due to years of underinvestment and sanctions.

The New York Times

...which still proudly claims Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reported on Saturday, however, that one other factor has contributed to the dire state of the country’s energy supplies — a pair of attacks on major gas pipelines back in February, which were attributed to Israel by the Times.

The attacks disrupted the flow of gas to millions of people across Iran and caused widespread outages across five separate provinces.

Israel did not comment on the blasts at the time, and Iran’s oil minister Javad Owji also appeared hesitant to place blame.

According to the Times, the Iranian government attempted to minimize the impact of the damage caused to the gas pipelines by dipping into emergency gas reserves. While the strategy worked in the short term, preventing disruptions for millions of people, it has left the government with a depleted energy supply that, despite Iran’s vast natural gas and oil reserves, it is struggling to replenish.

Iran’s inability to bounce back from the crisis is due to several problems, the Times stated, including "mismanagement, corruption, and cheap prices that fuel wasteful consumption."

Heavy sanctions placed on Iran by the West over its nuclear program have also led to an inability for the country to modernize its energy sector, analysts told the Times, as it lacks the investors needed to be able to do so.

In 2015, during Iran’s pact with world powers to roll back the program in exchange for sanctions relief, the rial was at 32,000 to $1.

On July 30, the day that Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, elected on a promise to ease the sanctions, was sworn in and began his term, the rate was 584,000 to $1.

US president-elect Trump, during his first term in office, unilaterally withdrew the US from the nuclear accord in 2018, and imposed a "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions.

The impact of the rolling power outages already seemed to be felt across Iran’s manufacturing industry, as one engineer at a household appliance production factory told the Times that production costs had already risen as a result of the outages.

Compounding Iran’s problems, the rial fell to its lowest level in history last week, losing more than 10% of its value since Donald Trump
...The tack in the backside of the Democratic Party...
won the US presidential election in November.

The rial traded at 777,000 rials to the dollar, traders in Tehran said, down from 703,000 rials on the day Trump won.

Iran’s Central Bank has in the past flooded the market with more hard currencies in an attempt to improve the rate.

Tehran’s domestic troubles follow a series of blows on the international stage, as its regional proxy groups, chief among them Hezbollah in Leb
...The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. Only one of those statements is an exaggeration....
, have been battered by Israel’s year-long military campaign.

The two sides agreed to a shaky ceasefire in late November, but Iran was dealt one more blow when former Syrian president Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
was ousted by rebel forces, just two weeks after they launched a new offensive against his regime.

Assad’s abrupt departure from Syria further eroded Tehran’s ability to project power and sustain its network of proxy groups across the Middle East, and Hezbollah head Naim Qassem
... the Grand Vizier of the Hezbullies...
revealed that the terror group had lost the land route that allowed Iran to send convoys of weapons to Lebanon.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei
...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...>
blamed Israel and the United States for the fall of Assad and vowed that despite the setbacks, the so-called Axis of Resistance® would only grow stronger moving forward.

US imposes new sanctions on Iran’s oil trade, prison
[Rudaw] The United States on Thursday imposed new sanctions targeting Iran’s oil trade and a prison where alleged human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
violations take place.

"The Department of State is today imposing sanctions on four entities that have transported Iranian oil and identifying six vessels as their blocked property," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
...71st United States secretary of state and a leading light of the corrupt and inept Biden administration. He previously served as deputy national security advisor from 2013 to 2015 and deputy secretary of state from 2015 to 2017 under the corrupt and inept Obama administration. He advocated for the 2003 invasion of Iraq while serving as the Democratic staff director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2002 to 2008. He was a foreign policy advisor for the Biden 2008 presidential campaign. During his tenure in the Obama administration, Blinken helped craft B.O.'s policy on Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the nuclear program of Iran. We all saw how well each of those worked. After leaving government service, Blinken moved into the private sector, co-founding WestExec Advisors, a lobbying firm...
said in a statement.

In addition, 12 people were sanctioned "for their role supporting smuggling and arms trafficking, money laundering, and shipment of illicit Iranian petroleum for the benefit of Ansarallah, a Specially Designated Global Terrorist commonly known as the Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
s," the statement added.

The State Department said it would continue to impose sanctions to hold Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. accountable as long as it targets the US and its allies.

The US also sanctioned Iran's Ghezel Hesar Prison, which it called a "site of gross violations of human rights, namely cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and punishment of individuals in Iran who sought to exercise their right to freedom of expression."

Ghezel Hesar Prison, located in Karaj northwest of Tehran, is one of the sites authorities torture and execute prisoners.

On Wednesday, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on four entities and individuals accused of supporting Iran’s missile and drone programs, providing components that are used "for sensitive navigational systems" for the military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force.
