Multiple Hamas supporting NYU professors are being arrested after physically taking over and shutting down the library during finals
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Anti-Israel protesters rally outside NYU library on last day of class

[IsraelTimes] Demonstrators demand the university shut down its Tel Aviv campus, call for an intifada, as students study for finals

Several dozen anti-Israel protesters rallied outside New York University’s main library on Thursday, snarling students’ study plans on the last day of class for the fall semester.

The protesters chanted "intifada revolution" and "Tel Aviv is stolen land" while beating a wooden spoon on a metal bowl. Many were covering their faces with keffiyehs.

"While you’re learning, Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
’s burning," they chanted. One protester held a sign that said, "Shut down NYU Tel Aviv."

"We gain strength from our deaders," a speaker told the crowd.

The campus tightened security at the library, restricting access to a single door. Around a dozen campus security officers manned a barricade at the building entrance and checked student IDs for those entering. A line of students stretched down the block huddled against the winter cold. The protest took place on the sidewalk, on public property.

An NYU spokesperson said the protesters had tried to block all entryways into the building, ignoring directions from campus safety officers. Entry to the library was temporarily halted, but was later restored, the spokesperson said.

The university said police made eight arrests. Two protesters were visible in a police van next to the protest. Other demonstrators cursed at officers and called them "pigs" as a police drone buzzed overhead.

NYU spokesperson John Beckman said the university "rejects any claims that this is peaceful protest."

"The people involved were intentionally targeting members of our community," Beckman said, adding that their "harassing behavior" disrupted studies at a critical time in the semester as final exams began and ignored the rights of students.

The protesters demanded that the university disclose and divest holdings in "companies aiding the Israeli occupation of Paleostine." They targeted the university’s president, Linda Mills, chanting, "Linda Mills, you can’t hide, you’re supporting genocide." A masked demonstrator handed out fliers that demanded the university "DIVEST from the settler state of ’Israel'" and close its campus in Tel Aviv.

Students outside the library said protesters had staged a demonstration inside the building on Wednesday night, disrupting studies ahead of final exams. NYU’s branch of Students for Justice in Paleostine said on Instagram it had staged a "sit in" at the library to demand divestment from "war profiteering."

NYU saw raucous anti-Israel protests last year, but the campus has been relatively quiet in the fall semester.

The Forward, which writes from the Manhattan socialist Jewish perspective familiar to lovers of Woody Allen films, pulls back the lens:
YU hoops game closed to general public after NYU protest

Thursday was the last day of finals at New York University, and the evening promised students following the undefeated NYU basketball team — ranked seventh in the country — an intriguing matchup with Yeshiva University, which had already defeated one opponent ranked in Division III’s Top 25 this season.

But after a pro-Palestinian student protest resulted in several arrests just a few blocks away from the campus athletic center, the game was closed to the general public. Instead, only people added to a guest list by each team were allowed to attend.

MacsLive, which broadcasts Yeshiva University men’s basketball games, announced the decision but did not say who was behind it or state their rationale.

The dozen or so students, faculty and other New Yorkers who handcuffed themselves together in a blockade of the entrance to Bobst Library — the school’s 12-story main library — were protesting to demand NYU disclose its financial holdings in “the industries that massacre people globally” and divest from companies “aiding the Israeli occupation of Palestine,” according to a statement from the group.

NYPD arrested eight protesters, NYU wrote in a statement. Two of the arrests were of NYU faculty members, according to the Washington Square News, NYU’s student newspaper. It identified one of them as Andrew Ross, a professor in the school’s College of Arts and Sciences.

According to NYU Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine, three faculty members at the protest were subsequently barred from campus by Georgina Dopico, the school’s provost. The group said all three faculty were Jewish. (Dopico did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

The group’s statement did not mention Yeshiva University or the basketball game. But there were reasons to suspect the protest might have spilled over into the John A. Paulson Center, the arena just a few minutes’ walk away from the library.

Yeshiva University, an Orthodox Jewish university in Washington Heights, is one of the most prominent Zionist institutions in New York. The school has a campus in Jerusalem, and its president, Rabbi Ari Berman, has posed for photos with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since the war began.

Nicknamed the Macs, the basketball team, whose perennial on-court success has made it a point of pride at the institution, is a hallmark of the school’s connection to Israel. The team fields Israeli players, it plays the Israeli national anthem before home games and some of its players have gone on to play in Israel after graduating. Its head coach, Elliot Steinmetz, has offered trenchant pro-Israel commentary on social media throughout the war.

Steinmetz said in a text message Thursday that limiting attendance was a “security decision.”

“It’s sad to see such uneducated people in an institution of higher education,” Steinmetz added. “Especially knowing there are faculty members involved that [are] unfortunately shaping future generations based on hate fueled propaganda. But that’s the world we live in right now. We lack educators and leaders in important places.”

NYU Athletics and the John A. Paulson Center did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Iraq
Five Amedi schools halt studies due to Turkey-PKK clashes
[Rudaw] Five schools in Duhok province’s Amedi district have halted studies due to ongoing clashes between the Turkish army and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the border areas of the Kurdistan Region.

Schools in Amedi’s Barche village on Wednesday halted classes and sent students home after two drones were dropped in the village. A day later, students of two schools in Barche, and three schools in the nearby Guharze, Balava, and Sargale villages did not return to school.

The decision was taken by the elders of the village.

“The security situation in all four villages is very bad…There are daily clashes between the Turkish army and the PKK guerillas,” Mala Lazgin Barchi, a resident of Barchi village told Rudaw.

“We decided that the students do not go to school until the [security] situation is resolved,” he added.

According to Barchi, at least 25 artillery and mortar shells have been dropped in the village since the start of the clashes.

Rebar Gwizi, the head of the nearby Deralok subdistrict, said that he will visit the villages to find a solution.

“Today I will visit the four villages and meet with the people to find a solution for that problem so that students can return to classes once more and continue their studies normally,” Gwizi said.

Turkey began intensifying its decades-long war against the PKK, especially in Duhok province, in mid-June after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly said he would launch a new offensive during the summer. Ankara has deployed hundreds of troops to the province.

Erdogan said in March that Ankara is close to completing a zone that will “permanently resolve” the security issues along their border with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq by the summer.

Last month, Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler said that the Turkish army “secured” the key Zap area of the Kurdistan Region from the PKK. The Zap region was one of the last remaining routes for the PKK to move from the Kurdistan Region into Turkey.

The defense minister vowed to continue the army’s activities in the region.

IDF intercepts two drones from Iran’s proxies; no damage or casualties
[IsraelTimes] Sirens sound in southern Israel throughout the morning due to UAVs and apparent false alarms

The Israel Defense Forces said on Thursday that a drone launched from Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
was intercepted over the Red Sea, near Israel’s southernmost city of Eilat.

The drone did not enter Israeli airspace, the military said.

Earlier on Thursday, another drone heading to Israel from the east was intercepted by the Israeli Air Force over southern Israel, the military said.

There were no injuries in that incident either, and sirens did not sound in any towns. The IDF said alerts were activated in relevant areas "according to protocol."

The IDF has described past attacks from Yemen and Iraq as being launched "from the east."

Separately, the IDF said suspected drone infiltration sirens in southern Israel earlier in the morning were apparently false alarms.

In recent days, Yemen’s Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
rebels have fired a number of drones at Israel, one of which hit an apartment building in Yavne after the IDF failed to recognize it as a threat. The drone caused damage to property but no injuries.

The Houthis, part of Iran’s "Axis of Resistance®" against Israel and the United States,
…the only part that’s still even marginally effective, mostly because they were never more than marginally effective and therefore low on Israel and America’s priority lists…
have fired hundreds of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones at Israel since the outbreak of the Gazoo

war, one of which killed a man in Tel Aviv.

That ongoing conflict began on October 7, 2023, when the Hamas
..a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",...
terror group led a massive cross-border attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage.

Israel has twice bombed Houthi targets in retaliation for their attacks.

The Houthis have also waged a harassment campaign against shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden during the Gaza war, severely disrupting the vital trade route.

They have targeted more than 80 merchant vessels with missiles and drones since the war in Gaza started last October,
…actually hitting a few of them, significantly damaging even fewer…
including seizing one vessel and sinking two in a campaign that also killed four sailors. Other missiles and drones have either been intercepted by a US-led coalition in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets, which have included Western military vessels.

The rebels maintain that they target ships linked to Israel, the US, or the United Kingdom to force an end to Israel’s campaign against the Hamas terror group in Gaza. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
many of the ships attacked have had little or no connection to the conflict, including some bound for Iran.

Israeli strikes target former regime military supplies in Latakia, Tartous: Monitor
[Rudaw] The Israeli military on Thursday launched its latest round of strikes against military warehouses belonging to the former Syrian regime in Latakia and Tartous provinces, a war monitor reported, as part of its ongoing plan to prevent rebels from seizing them.

"Israeli warplanes launched Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s targeting the port of Latakia, Dahr al-Zuba in Baniyas, and military warehouses of the former regime in Dahr Safra in Tartous countryside, which caused missiles to explode at the site and launch randomly," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor.

Israel has carried out over 350 airstrikes on military sites of the former government of Bashir al-Assad since his ousting on December 8, according to the Observatory. The strikes are an attempt to destroy Syria’s military stockpiles. It has also sent troops marching across the border into a buffer zone east of the annexed Golan Heights, a move condemned by Arab countries and the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
On Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that two Syrian navy facilities, dozens of sea-to-sea missiles, anti-aircraft batteries, airfields, dozens of weapons production sites across several provinces, and an entire arsenal of missiles, drones, fighter jets, tanks, and helicopters were destroyed in the air raids.

"Israeli warplanes continue to destroy what remains of Syria’s military arsenal," the Observatory said.

As Assad’s regime fell, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a "historic day for the Middle East."

"The collapse of the Assad regime, the tyranny in Damascus, offers great opportunity but is also fraught with significant dangers," Netanyahu said on X.

SDF says has deals with HTS, to send a delegation to Damascus
[Rudaw] Mazloum Abdi, chief of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced on Thursday that they have reached agreements with the new authority in Damascus, adding that they are working on sending a delegation to the capital.

"At the outset of the incident, HTS informed us that our territories are not their target," he said during an interview with the SDF-affiliated Ronahi TV aired on Thursday, referring to the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS) - a jihadist group which recently led a coalition of rebel groups and successfully toppled Bashir al-Assad’s regime.

The new authority has avoided festivities with the US-backed SDF so far.

"We have agreements with HTS regarding Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor," Abdi said.

When the HTS took over Aleppo city, they allowed the SDF to maintain its control of Kurdish-majority neighborhoods, mainly Sheikh Maqsood.

When the former regime’s army withdrew from parts of Deir ez-Zor to support Assad in other parts of the country, the SDF replaced them, saying the deployment was aimed at preventing the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) from exploiting the security vacuum.

The SDF remains in control of parts of the oil-rich province.

"Efforts are underway to send a delegation to Damascus for some negotiations," revealed Abdi.

The Kurdish administration in northeast Syria (Rojava) decided on Thursday to raise the new flag of the country, previously used by the opposition, across its institutions.

The flag, featuring three red stars and the colors green, white, and black, has been used by various opposition groups fighting against Assad’s oppressive regime.

Referring to it as "the flag of independence," Abdi said the flag is "suitable" for them "because this is not the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic but the flag of the Syrian Republic, which represents all components."
