08:07 Summary for the morning of May 28, 2024:
In the Khar'kov direction, the Russian Armed Forces are conducting combat operations in Volchansk and in the direction of the settlement. Liptsy, the enemy, having pulled reinforcements from other sectors of the front, slowed down the initial pace of advance of the Russian Army.
Near Volchansk, despite four counterattacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russian troops advanced up to 600 meters in some areas. In the Liptsovsky direction, our units in the Severny holiday village repelled two counterattacks and advanced 250 meters. There are reports of new Ukrainian military personnel who have surrendered.
In the Svatovo-Kupyansky direction, the Russian Armed Forces retain the initiative at Ivanovka and at the salient of the front at Berestovoy.
The eastern part of Chasov Yar, the Kvartal microdistrict, is being stormed by our troops. The Russian Armed Forces are targeting the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the development with artillery and heavy aerial bombs; assault groups have concentrated their efforts, according to enemy estimates, in the south-eastern part of the development. Numerous drones and enemy artillery attacks are seriously hampering the pace of our advance.
West of Avdievka, the Russian Armed Forces are advancing at Arkhangelsk on the Ocheretinsky salient, northwest of Solovyevo, the zone of control at Uman and Netailovo has been significantly expanded. They report the beginning of battles for Karlovka west of Netailovo.
On the Vrem'evsky ledge there are heavy battles near Staromayorsky and Urozhainy. There are battles for every building.
08:04 DPR special services discovered a large cache of ammunition of Ukrainian troops in the Artemovsky region, the press service of the FSB Directorate for the region reported.
In particular, more than 20 hand grenades, 25 mortar rounds, an AT-4 grenade launcher made in Sweden, five MON-50 mines, three improvised explosive devices, TNT bombs and 1,000 rounds of small arms ammunition were found.
08:00 The enemy recognizes the further loss of positions in the Netailovo area and the expansion of the zone of control around the village liberated by the Russian army. In Karlovka they are hastily strengthening their defenses. The battles for Karlovka will begin very soon, writes Boris Rozhin.

[REGNUM] Russian troops are advancing in the Donbass and the Khar'kov region; as a result of successful offensive operations, two more settlements have been liberated: Ivanovka in the Khar'kov region and Netailovo in the DPR, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported.
Netaylovo is the southern front of the conditional Avdeevsky direction, the area of the village of Pervomaiskoye, which for a year and a half remained one of the most powerful nodes of the Ukrainian defense in the Donetsk region.
North-west of Avdievka, Russian troops are moving forward from the village of Ocheretino, recently abandoned by the enemy. Separate assault units are advancing along the railway towards the village of Progress, while to the south the offensive is moving towards the village of Sokol and the large village of Evgenovka.
As a result of the offensive operation, it was possible to dislodge the Ukrainian Armed Forces from a number of defensive lines, says a Regnum news agency source in the ranks of the Donetsk 1st Army Corps.
“In the Ocheretino area there is progress in several directions at once, primarily to the north and west. The enemy abandoned some positions and retreated in others. The situation is consistently difficult, but with an advantage in our favor. Recently, we have noted the activation of the artillery of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which has received ammunition, so that the enemy is fighting back fiercely, but often stupidly,” the interlocutor said.
Messages about the release of Evgenovka have already appeared in Telegram channels, but Regnum news agency sources deny this information. At the same time, they note that “good news should be expected” in this sector of the front in the coming days.
TWO POWERFUL FORTIFIED AREAS
The strategic goal of the offensive in this direction is the city of Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk), a major defense center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the border between the DPR and the Dnepropetrovsk region. The city is used as a logistics center for Ukrainian troops in the western Donbass. Also, according to rumors, the headquarters of an enemy group operating in the former Avdievka direction is located there.
It was on the approaches to Krasnoarmeysk that the most powerful defensive line was created - part of the so-called “Zaluzhny Line”. It is assumed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will fight for the city to the last, so in the summer we can expect the start of an operation to storm and break into the Ukrainian defense.
“Of course, we still need to get there, but until we knock them out of Krasnoarmeysk, we cannot talk about the complete liberation of Donbass. They understand perfectly well where our offensive is aimed, so they are actively preparing approaches and erecting defensive lines,” said the interlocutor of IA Regnum.
In fact, the entire Krasnoarmeysk with the nearby settlements of Mirnograd, Selidovo, Grodovka and Novogrodovka is being turned into a continuous defensive area, which allows the Ukrainian Armed Forces to hold part of the territories of Donbass.
Another similar area is being prepared at the same time in the area of the settlements of Konstantinovka, Druzhkovka, Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.
In the direction of Krasnoarmeysk, Russian troops are currently focusing on encircling the village of Novoselovka Pervaya and displacing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to the right bank of the Volchya River. With the crossing of the water barrier, it will be possible to talk about the beginning of the assault on the defensive unit in Krasnoarmeysk.
THE SANITARY ZONE IS EXPANDING
The situation in the Khar'kov region remains difficult for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which is recognized, among other things, by officials in the command of the Ukrainian army and the military-civil administration of the region.
“The enemy does not give up his plans. We can say that the previous events were simply a test of our defense - and the answer was not easy for us,” said deputy commander of the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Maxim Zhorin.
The breakthrough of Russian troops in the border area was a painful blow for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The military prosecutor's office of Ukraine even opened criminal cases against the commanders of units of the territorial defense forces, whose area of responsibility included the border of the Khar'kov region. It is reported that the money allocated for the construction of defense lines was simply stolen.
In addition, the offensive of the Russian Armed Forces forced the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to urgently transfer reinforcements to the Khar'kov region, which were planned to be used in the Donbass and Zaporozhye region.
Now the offensive zone in the border area can be divided into two theaters: the area of the city of Volchansk and the area of the village of Liptsy. At the same time, heavy urban fighting continues in Volchansk, and in other areas Ukrainian troops are retreating, in some places launching counterattacks, sources told IA Regnum.
“North of the village of Liptsy, the Ukrainian Armed Forces counterattacked several times, trying to regain previously lost positions, but were repulsed and retreated. However, defense lines have been created to the north of the city that will need to be pushed through, which is what the advanced assault units are doing now,” explains our interlocutor.
For the Ukrainian troops, the situation is complicated by the fact that the distance from the village to the outskirts of Khar'kov is only 15 kilometers, so in this area all forces and means are actively used, which the Ukrainians absolutely lack in the Donbass or in the Zaporozhye region, in particular, aviation and artillery from fresh American supplies.
In general, the severity of the fighting in this area is constantly growing, say direct participants in the events.
KYIV'S COUNTER MOVE
The Ukrainian authorities are very dissatisfied with the actions of the military, giving up positions and retreating in all directions at the front. Kyiv is also concerned about the position of the West, which may stop supplying weapons if the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to cede territory.
Therefore, it is possible that the Ukrainian command is planning a local offensive operation. It certainly won’t change the situation at the front, but it can show the “Western partners” that everything is in order and under control, but fresh portions of weapons are needed.
Eyewitnesses report that for the first time in a long time, Ukrainian artillerymen are not saving ammunition and are firing day and night. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are conducting increasingly fierce artillery bombardment in the area of the village of Vasilyevka in the Zaporozhye direction. This area is convenient for an offensive, since from Vasilyevka there is a direct road to Melitopol and further to the coast of the Azov Sea. It can be assumed that fierce fighting will unfold in this direction in the coming days.
At the same time, the offensive is unlikely to be successful: part of the forces were withdrawn from this direction and transferred to stop the breakthrough of the Russian army. We should also not forget that it was in the Zaporozhye region that the Ukrainian Armed Forces suffered extremely heavy losses during last year’s “counter-offensive,” so a new attempt to advance here threatens them with the same rake.

[Regnum] Russian troops discover basements littered with the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers in the village of Krynki, Kherson region. The head of the region, Vladimir Saldo, announced this on May 27.
The settlement is located on the left bank of the Dnieper.
“As for Krynoki, our military, when examining destroyed houses, continue to discover terrible finds - basements littered with the bodies of naval infantry,” he wrote in his Telegram channel.
The governor clarified that the Russian Armed Forces had completely liberated the specified settlement. Saldo also noted that only a small number of representatives of the Ukrainian Armed Forces remained on the left bank of the Dnieper.
As Regnum reported, at the end of February, Vladimir Saldo announced that the Russian military had completely cleared Krynki and the surrounding area of this village. He also noted that all attempts by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to gain a foothold on the left bank of the Dnieper are doomed to failure and will lead to additional casualties among the Ukrainian military.
In an interview with journalist Dmitry Kiselev, which was published in mid-March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Kiev command sent its people to slaughter in the village of Krynki.
According to him, the Ukrainian Armed Forces unsuccessfully tried to throw ammunition at their units using high-speed boats and drones. At the same time, the Ukrainian fighters, left without shells, abandoned their positions.

[Regnum] The North Atlantic Alliance is practicing nuclear strikes on the country's territory near the border with Russia, said First Deputy Director - Head of the FSB Border Service, Army General Vladimir Kulishov.
“NATO intelligence activity is increasing near the Russian border, and the intensity of operational and combat training activities for the alliance’s troops is increasing,” Izvestia quotes Kulishov as saying.
The head of the FSB border service added that during operational combat training, NATO troops practice, in particular, scenarios for conducting combat operations against Russia, including launching nuclear strikes on the country’s territory.
He also drew attention to the fact that Ukrainian special services, in cooperation with the West, are intensifying reconnaissance and subversive activities in the border regions of Russia, involving Ukrainian border residents in this. According to Kulishov, London and Washington contribute most to Kyiv in this.
As the head of the FSB Border Service noted, the situation at the interstate border and in the border regions remains tense. In this regard, it is necessary to take measures to protect the country and protect its borders.
As Regnum reported, in April, the commander of US Army Europe, General Darryl Williams, said that NATO military exercises held in Europe in the spring were the largest since the Cold War. He noted that they are “actually” directed against Russia.
Former Defense Minister and Secretary of the Security Council Sergei Shoigu said on April 26 that NATO troops located close to the Russian borders created additional security threats. According to him, there are about 33 thousand NATO troops, about 300 tanks and more than 800 other combat vehicles near the Russian border.
The Foreign Ministry stated that NATO is preparing its allies in the bloc for a potential clash with Russia, drawing attention to the militarization of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region.
On May 6, the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, on behalf of President Vladimir Putin, began preparations for exercises with missile formations of the Southern Military District, involving aviation and naval forces. The exercises were aimed at maintaining the readiness of personnel and equipment of units for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons in order to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Russia.

[Regnum] If Poland sends its military contingent to the territory of Ukraine, it will never leave. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this on May 28 during a press approach following his visit to Uzbekistan.
The head of state noted that recently statements have been heard from Western countries, including Poland, about the possibility of sending military contingents to Ukraine.
“We hear Polish speech, there are many mercenaries from Poland. If some contingents of European countries come in together with the Poles, others will leave, the Poles will never,” he said.
Putin also called this an obvious thing.
“Maybe I’m wrong, but it’s unlikely. “Hardly,” the president clarified.
As Regnum reported, earlier on May 28, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski did not rule out the possibility of sending Polish troops to Ukraine. According to him, in the current situation no possibilities can be ruled out.
Western politicians have recently often made statements about the alleged possibility of sending troops to the Ukrainian conflict zone. Thus, on May 26, the German publication Spiegel wrote that the Baltic countries and Poland announced their readiness to send troops to Ukraine if the Russian Armed Forces achieve serious successes in the Northern Military District zone.
At the end of February, the Russian President warned NATO countries against sending troops to Ukraine. The head of state emphasized that now the consequences for the interventionists will be more tragic.
The Russian leader's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, noted on May 27 that NATO is directly involved in the Ukrainian conflict. He added that the alliance is actually in direct confrontation with Russia.

[Regnum] Russia will subsequently receive documents developed at the so-called peace conference on Ukraine, which will be held in Switzerland. This was stated on May 28 by the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, at a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro.
He clarified that these papers will include items on food security, as well as the nuclear and humanitarian spheres. The head of the Kyiv regime noted that new steps regarding other points will depend on Russia's reaction.
“We will move on to other points, and if three work, then the rest will work,” he emphasized.
The head of the Kyiv regime did not say who exactly or which organizations or countries will hand over the documents of the Swiss conference to Russia.
As Regnum reported, the conference in Switzerland will take place on June 15–16 in the city of Bürgenstock. Russia was not invited to the event. The conference organizers plan that more than 160 delegations will attend the meeting. Discussions at the event will be based on the so-called peace formula proposed by the head of the Kyiv regime.
On May 13, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the conference in Switzerland was an attempt to formulate an ultimatum for Russia. He noted that Moscow will not participate in this event and any other negotiations on Ukraine, where they are trying to promote Kyiv’s “peace formula.”
On May 24, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called the conference in Switzerland another scam on the part of the United States. She noted that Russia has never refused to negotiate.
On May 27, retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis said that the conference in Switzerland would not bring positive results and was doomed to failure. The expert emphasized that no country can force Russia to take any steps.
[BBC] A German military officer has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for spying for Russia.
The man, identified only as Thomas H, had been a captain in the army's procurement office when he contacted Russian embassy in Berlin and passed on secret military information.
German police arrested him in the city of Koblenz in August and accused him of sharing photographs of munitions training systems and aircraft technology.
The 54-year-old admitted to a Dusseldorf court on Monday to passing information to Russia, saying it was a "stupid idea" and that he regretted his actions.
"It is the biggest mess I have ever made in my life," he told the court.
Prosecutors said the man approached the Russian embassy in Berlin and the consulate in Bonn unprompted and "almost persistently offered himself to Russia".
They said he photographed sensitive military files and dropped information through a letterbox at the consulate building in Bonn.
In a closing statement, the man said he had contacted the embassy after becoming concerned about the risk of nuclear war driven by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
He added that he was especially concerned that Germany's supply of heavy weapons to Ukraine could draw it into the conflict. According to government figures, Berlin supplied about €6.6bn (£5.62bn) worth of military hardware to Ukraine in 2022 and 2023. This included 40 Leopard 1 tanks and 100 infantry fighting vehicles.
The man claimed that chronic overwork had impaired his ability to think critically about his actions.
His lawyer said he had been influenced by a stream of pro-Russian propaganda and disinformation that he had been consuming on TikTok and Telegram at the time. He noted that his client had also joined the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
He added that the decision came during a four-day period "in which [his client] crossed red lines".
While prosecutors said the leaks had revealed sensitive military information, they noted that he had not disclosed state secrets, an act which would have attracted a much heavier lifetime sentence.
The trial comes as a slew of Russian spy affairs have hit headlines in Germany.
In April, two men with dual Russian-German citizenship were arrested, accused of spying on US army bases in Germany where Ukrainian soldiers were being trained.
Since December, an employee for German domestic intelligence, Carsten L, has been on trial accused of passing on classified data to Russian agents.
And in February 2023, a former security guard at the British embassy in Berlin was sentenced to 13 years in prison for passing on large amounts of sensitive information to the nearby Russian embassy.
The affairs have sparked a debate about whether security measures in Germany are tight enough. The government has admitted that more cases are likely to come to light.
In a recent television interview, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said that Germany was a target for foreign powers. He added that over the next few months, more spies were likely to be "unmasked".

[Regnum] The Rostec state corporation has modernized the base plate for mortars to increase the accuracy of fire and the effectiveness of the weapon, the press service of the state corporation reported on May 28.
“The base plate is one of the main elements of the mortar. It absorbs the return shock pulse of the shot and maintains the stability of the weapon,” Rostec said.
Thus, the new slab has an improved design that allows it to fit more tightly to the ground. In turn, this increases the stability of the mortar when firing from unprepared positions.
In addition to developing new weapons, Rostec is constantly modernizing existing weapons. As the state corporation said, the mortars have proven themselves in real conditions. In particular, silent mortars. Thanks to them, the enemy learns about the shelling moments before the strike.
Rostec added that the patent “Mortar Base Plate” took second place in the “Best Utility Model” category at the XXVII Moscow International Salon of Inventions and Innovative Technologies “Archimedes-2024”.
As Regnum reported, in April the PP-2000 submachine gun passed a shooting test with dirt inside. The weapons used by special forces have been subjected to unprecedented tests. They threw him on ice and into a puddle, buried him in clay and mud, and then ran over him in an SUV. After this, the PP-2000 fired 410 shots, twice the stated tactical and technical characteristics.
In March, Rostec upgraded the Khrizantema anti-tank missile. After modernization, the missile acquired an increased controlled flight range while maintaining its dimensions. Maintaining the dimensions allowed us to avoid modifications to its carriers.
[Daily Mail, where Amreica gets it news] Russia's most modern tank has been seen suffering a 'disco head' glitch that sends its turrets spinning out of control while on the battlefield under fire.
The bizarre fault has struck the T-90 tank - a third-generation Russian main battle vehicle that has been dubbed by Russian President Vladimir Putin ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances... as the 'best tank in the world.'
But the impressive machine has been hit with an embarrassing bug, 'spinning turret syndrome', where any minor damage causes the turret to begin rotating uncontrollably, making it incapable of any further combat.
The worst example of the flaw came during a battle in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region when Ukrainian troops in two US-supplied M2 Bradley fighting vehicles came face-to-face with one of the Russian T-90s.
The Bradley's hit the Russian tank with rapid 25mm cannon fire which was expected to cause little damage to the T-90s due to their heavy frontal armour.
