[YahooSports] He was brilliant. He was a bully. He coached some of the most perfectly disciplined basketball ever played, and then acted undisciplined in his own life.
He was an American original and a cultural touchstone with oversized impact, in ways good and, yes, sometimes less so.
You could say Bob Knight was a product of his time, but even half a century ago he pushed the edges of proper conduct; attempting, say, to beat down the door to the referee’s dressing room was frowned upon back in the 1970 NIT as well.
Complicated? They don't get much more complicated than Robert Montgomery Knight, one of the greatest coaches of all time. He combined a demanding will and a legendary temper to become as famous for his authoritarian outbursts as decades of dominance highlighted by three national college basketball titles. ...Until the day they passed, my parents would tell anyone who would listen about the times total strangers came up to them in restaurants and complimented them on our behavior.
The secret was pretty straightforward: public misbehavior would result in immediate termination with extreme prejudice.

My boys say they still remember me telling them "do you want to go to the bathroom and talk about this" in restaurants and stores.
(Problem was, the youngest one always wanted to go to the bathroom.)

Honestly, patrons should start charging for any and all restaurant mistakes. "Oh you brought the wrong order, we eat free." "Oh you forgot to bring us the bill for an hour, we charge $200/hr, EACH for wasting our time."
Don't know. I get the feeling there is a bit more to this story.
"All my kid did was watch tablet the whole time" easily translates to 'had the volume maxed and talked along with the tablet'. Along with the general breakdown of awareness and politeness. Having been there, watching someone hand a child a PED and a thing of crackers or chips and watching the mess happen so long as the adult can carry on with their conversation has had me measuring work loads, like getting under the table to clean up for the next round of guests.

I admit my kids can be messy but we clean the majority of it up and always tip well if they are. And yes, I know there's ones that let them run amok but the route their taking is going to backfire majorly on them. They will wind up in court.

When (other people's) kids are running wild in a restaurant, I deploy the casual aisle shoe™. If they're gonna scream, it might as well be in pain. You're welcome.
My kids were 95% behaved. The grandkids, possibly higher, when I'm present ;-)

[GEO.TV] In a unique cultural event, the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia in Barcelona welcomed nudist visitors during a special 90-minute tour.
This collaboration with the Catalan Naturism Club aimed to provide a different and more immersive way to explore the museum's exhibits.
The focus of the tour was the "Bronzes of Riace" exhibition, featuring Luigi Spina's photographs portraying two magnificent Greek bronze statues of naked warriors from the 5th century BC, discovered near Riace, Italia, in 1972.
Guide Edgard, who led the tour without clothing, explained the intention was to create a more vibrant and non-traditional museum experience. The idea was to enable visitors to feel a deeper connection with the art they were observing.
The museum's website promised participants the opportunity to "admire the works by posing in the same situation as they are, completely naked and surrounded by other bodies."
This novel approach aimed to emphasise the historical significance of nudity, helping to eliminate any sense of shame or discomfort associated with the human body.
Visitors, like health worker Marta, found the experience just as intense as viewing the exhibition with clothes on but with a newfound understanding and appreciation for the historical context of nudity.

Back in the real law enforcement days when the guy who shot the cop was taken alive, he would have been bounced off the concrete a few times as a warning to behave on the way back or they would do it again.

Back in the older, real law enforcement days, a guy who shot a cop NEVER was taken alive. The slippery stairs or road skids were frequent mishaps for those miscreants who assaulted a cop. Just saying...

Tough dude. Despite being hit in the legs multiple times, the officer did not give up and chased Santana to a parking lot, where Santana viciously beat him with the gun
[After the trooper continued pursuit in his vehicle and ended the episode by whacking the miscreant with his cruiser]...he was treated for a brain bleed and skull fractures.

Medically retire that young man to a taxpayer purchased farm in downstate Illinois where he can raise kids and chickens. Occasional Police academy speaking engagements as he is able.
[AFRICANEWS] Gambia ... The Gambia is actually surrounded by The Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain... 's high court has sentenced a soldier to 12 years in prison for leading a foiled coup last year against President Adama Barrow's administration.
The judgment was passed on Tuesday. Eight soldiers were charged with treason and conspiracy in January for their role in a Dec. 21, 2022 coup attempt in the West African nation of 2.5 million people almost entirely surrounded by Senegal ... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees... .
Two civilians and a police officer were also charged with concealment of treason and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Seven, including the two civilians and the officer, were acquitted and released mid-trial.
The soldier accused of being the ringleader, Sanna Fadera, was found guilty of treason, the court ruled on Tuesday. Three other accused soldiers were acquitted of all charges.
Coup attempts are not uncommon in Gambia, which is still reeling from over two decades under former president Yahya Jammeh.
Jammeh himself seized power in 1994 and foiled several attempts to overthrow him before he lost an election in late 2016 to Barrow. Fadera has denied all charges. He has 30 days to appeal the verdict.
West Africa has seen an upsurge in coups since 2020 with the military seizing power in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso ...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president used to be Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and was chased out in 2014. Now it's the usual army officer type guy, Captain Ibrahim Traore, running things, who's just doing a bang-up job unless he's already been deposed... and Guinea.

[AFRICANEWS] The Ugandan government on Wednesday slammed the United States' announcement that it would withdraw the country from a trade agreement because of human rights ...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state... violations, saying the move would hurt its farmers and small businesses.
Washington announced this week that it was excluding Uganda, along with the Central African Republic, Gabon and Niger, from the list of sub-Saharan African countries benefiting from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) from January 2024.
This Act, which dates back to 2000, allows African countries to export a wide range of products to the United States duty-free. This preferential trade treatment is, however, subject to a series of conditions in terms of political pluralism, respect for human rights and the rule of law, and the fight against corruption.
In a letter to Congress, US President Joe The Big Guy Biden ...46th president of the U.S. We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men and women created ... by the — you know — you know, the thing... accused the Ugandan government of human rights violations, which has been the focus of fierce criticism from human rights groups, the UN and Western countries since the adoption in May of a law dubbed the "Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023".

[USNI] Alleged corruption inside Beijing’s rocket forces, which led to the ouster of former Chinese defense minister Li Shangfu, continues to be a problem for Chinese President Xi Jinping, an expert on People’s Liberation Army said Tuesday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies event.
Xi has not been successful at his efforts to clean up the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force, despite the removal of a number of its most senior generals earlier this summer as part of an anti-corruption push, said Roderick Lee, research director at the Air University’s China Aerospace Studies Institute.
The Chinese military is organized along both government and Communist Party lines, which means the “minister of defense is a weak position,” as it falls under the CCP’s control, said Shen Ming Shih, a fellow at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research.
The defense minister’s resignation may signal warmer military-to-military relations between China and other countries, Shen, who spoke from Taiwan, said. In recent weeks, he said “less hawkish” statements are being thrown at Taiwan and the United States by Chinese officials and its media.
But this upheaval at the top of the ministry of defense and across the rocket force does not signify Beijing has any intention to reduce provocative intercepts in the air and at sea, the panelists agreed. Nor does it mean that Xi intends to cut back on modernizing his conventional forces, including adding 30 warships and several hundred fourth or fifth-generation fighter aircraft, according to the
Joel Wuthnow, a senior research fellow specializing in China’s military at the National Defense University, said the recently released Pentagon paper, often called the China Military Power Report, cited the rising number of reported dangerous intercepts as a major concern. As an example of how these incidents are continuing, he cited the most recent video of a Chinese fighter coming within 10 feet of a B-52 bomber operating in international air space.
Intercepts are meant to send a message that Xi is unhappy that America and its allies fly or sail in territories Beijing claims, Lee said.
[GEO.TV] North Korea ...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche... has initiated the closure of approximately a dozen embassies across the world, including those in Spain, Hong Kong, and various African countries.
Reports and analysts suggest that nearly a quarter of North Korea's global diplomatic missions could be affected.
The move is seen as a result of the economic challenges faced by the isolated nation due to international sanctions. South Korea's unification ministry commented on North Korea's embassy closures, indicating that these actions reflect the nation's struggle to generate income abroad.
North Korean state media, KCNA, reported that the country's ambassadors recently conducted "farewell" visits to leaders in Angola and Uganda. Local media in these African countries confirmed the shutdown of North Korean embassies.
Both Angola and Uganda have maintained friendly relations with North Korea since the 1970s, engaging in military cooperation and projects that provide foreign currency, such as statue-building initiatives.
The closure of embassies could signal a significant shift in North Korea's foreign policy, with potential consequences for diplomatic engagement, humanitarian efforts within the country, and the ability to generate revenue through illicit means, according to Chad O'Carroll, the founder of NK Pro, a North Korea-focused website.

Many governments in similar situations have chosen to conduct most embassy functions through their UN missions instead of full shutdowns.

[ET via ZERO] Stephen Moore, senior economist at FreedomWorks and once a senior economic adviser to former President Donald Trump, has issued a grim prediction about America's electric vehicle (EV) market, saying EVs are poised to be automakers' "next big flop."
Mr. Moore's grim prediction for the EV market came in an interview on Fox News's "Varney & Co." program on Oct. 30 and an op-ed in The Daily Caller on Oct. 29, in which the economist compared the current EV push to the failed rollout of the Ford Edsel.
"One of the textbook marketing flops of all time was the Ford Edsel sedan, which was heralded as the hot new car in the late 1950s," he wrote in the op-ed.
At the time of the Edsel launch, automotive experts widely expressed the view that the sedan—named after Henry Ford's son—would be a sure thing. However, instead of sales in the hundreds of thousands, as experts generally predicted at the time, the Edsel sold a paltry 10,000 or so units and was discontinued.
A key factor behind the Edsel's flop is, according to Mr. Moore, that the car was pushed on a public that didn't want it.
"The obvious lesson for the industry: you can’t bribe Americans to buy cars they don’t want. Given the all-in approach mentality for EVs at Ford and GM, it’s clear that Detroit never got this message," he wrote.

I understand GM has redirected their efforts to hydrogen. Toyota has interests in all possible products to market.Reason being poor countries could not afford Ev's.In the old days con men were called slickers. They were kicked out of town when people caught onto them.Today they are politicians and can ply their skills indefinitely.

...Not quite so much that they didn't want it, but it took so long to plan and execute (and cost more than original estimates) that the price point was out of whack with its intended market. The weird grille and name didn't help, but the pricing was the biggest drawback.
By the way, the Edsel's delay due to repeated market surveys and statistical gathering was due in no small part to the president of Ford at the time...fella named Robert MacNamara.
[ET via ZERO] Almost a third of individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccine suffered from neurological complications including tremors, insomnia, and muscle spasms, according to a recent study published in the journal Vaccines.
The study analyzed 19,096 people who received COVID-19 vaccines in Italy in July 2021, out of which 15,368 had taken the Pfizer vaccine, 2,077 had taken the Moderna version, and 1,651 took the AstraZeneca version.
While both Pfizer and Moderna are mRNA vaccines, AstraZeneca, being an adenovirus vaccine, uses a different mechanism to trigger the immune response.
The study found that about 31.2 percent of vaccinated individuals developed post-vaccination neurological complications, particularly among those injected with the AstraZeneca jab. Different vaccines had a different "neurological risk profile."
The neurological risk profile of the AstraZeneca vaccine included headaches, tremors, muscle spasms, insomnia, and tinnitus, while the risk profile of the Moderna vaccine included sleepiness, vertigo, diplopia (double vision), paresthesia (a feeling of numbness or itching on the skin), taste and smell alterations, and dysphonia (hoarseness or loss of normal voice). "It turned me into a newt!"
As to Pfizer vaccines, researchers found "an increased risk" of cognitive fog or difficulty in concentration.
