Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani, 57, was the chief executive officer of Theranos
Theranos was a company chock full of Bright Young Things that supposedly had a breakthrough technology that would quickly perform vast numbers of very demanding blood tests using only a few drops of the patient’s blood. Unfortunately, that breakthrough had not been invented yet, and in fact continues to be the finest quality vapourware that at one point was valued at $9 billion before falling to zero in 2016. Smart set investors included billionaire venture capitalists Tim Draper and Don Lucas Sr, Rupert Murdoch, the Walton family, Betsy Devos, Larry Ellison, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim and companies like Walgreens and Safeway, while the board brought in former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, former Defence Secretary William Perry, future Defence Secretary General James "Mad Dog" Mattis, former U.S. Senator and Chair of the Armed Services Committee Sam Nunn, power lawyer David Boies, Retired U.S. Navy Admiral Gary Roughead, and former CEO of Wells Fargo Richard Kovachevic...
and the former boyfriend of founder Elizabeth Holmes
Holmes, 38, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for her role in defrauding investors in the blood testing startup
On Wednesday, Balwani was sentenced to 13 years, having been convicted in July of fraud and conspiracy
The jury in Balwani's trial convicted him on every count while jurors in Holmes' separate case acquitted her on some charges and deadlocked on others

[Slay] Twitter’s janitors called a strike outside the company’s headquarters, causing new boss Elon Musk to fire them all and cancel their contract.
The janitors were protesting outside the HQ in San Francisco, California after 20 of their colleagues were fired during the company’s recent major workforce culls.
However, when the remaining janitors in the SEIU Local 87 union called a strike on Monday, they were all fired.
Twitter also terminated its contact with the company that hired the janitors.
“Our cleaning contractor at Twitter was told by Twitter that they are cutting the contract,” said Olga Miranda, union president for the janitors.
“So we have about 48 families out of work. Perhaps the Union should've thought ahead
“And it just so happens that it’s three weeks before Christmas.”
A representative from SEIU Local 87 told the New Republic that 20 janitors were told on Friday that they were fired with no notice and that they were fighting for wages, “benefits, and job protections.”
By Monday, the union organized a strike with the rest of the janitors against the firings, saying the company was violating local cleaning regulations.
They also said they were locked out of the building.

The San Francisco mayor is investigating Musk because he allowed, GASP, employees to sleep in their offices. Never mind the many people sleeping outside on the sidewalk.

Good idea to keep SEIU well away from your HQ, Elon. No telling what mischief an SEIU operative could get into on the night shift while nobody's looking.

One of the rules of successful negotiation is to have an accurate estimate of the strength of your negotiating position. Musk operates a large non-union manufacturing plant only a short distance from Twitter HQ. I’m pretty sure they empty trash there somehow. This puts the small union crew in a pretty poor negotiating position. You have 40 families headed for a bad Christmas because they voted in terrible representation. I would deride them more if we weren’t riding the same short bus on a national scale.

What has the NYT been saying about other strikes recently? Pro-rail/teacher/nurse/food/amazon workers or anti?
These upper-class journalists despise the American working class with the burning fury of a thousand suns but the moment this contempt is turned towards them suddenly it’s wrong and bad.

Kuwaiti authorities revealed that 3,000 transgender and those men who perform female impersonation have been deported from the country since the beginning of 2022, after announcing the arrest of 18 homosexuals of both sexes in massage parlors in Salmiya area.
Kuwaiti "Al-Rai" newspaper stated in its website that the deportation took place during a wide campaign by the security forces, based on the instructions of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Talal al-Khalid.
The newspaper explained that al-Khaled’s instructions included "monitoring some massage centers for men, which sometimes exploit the law to practice contrary actions," noting that "impersonators (women) have recently begun to spread through suspicious offers and advertisements.
During the past days, a campaign against homosexuality was launched in Kuwait, during which anti-idea slogans were raised in the streets and public areas. The campaign received remarkable interaction on social media websites, while tweeters praised those in charge of it.
The campaign coincides with a major debate waged by the State of Qatar ...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Ha ha. Female-impersonating men. No better name for 'em.
[Shafaq News] The United States proposed selling Taiwan 100 of its most advanced Patriot air-defence missiles, radars, and support equipment in a deal valued at US$882 million (S$1.2 billion), according to a State Department notice revealed by Bloomberg News. Why does the US Media need Patriot missiles? Ohhhhhh. Nevermind
According to Bloomberg, the proposal was made under the provisions of a 2010 sale to the island. Therefore, it is classified as an enhancement to the earlier deal, with a potential total value of US$2.81 billion.
The new proposal calls for as many as 100 of Lockheed Martin Corp.'s hit-to-kill Patriot Pac-3 "Missile Segment Enhancement" missiles that are more advanced than earlier Patriots sent to Taiwan. The proposal also calls for M903 Launcher modification kits, missile round trainers, and software upgrades to accommodate the new missiles. Bloomberg said.
The move may raise tensions between the US and China amid the Biden administration, the same old faces in slightly different places, the same old ideas, the same old graft ...the pack of self-imagined masterminds of strategy and intrigue at the service of the Biden Crime Family and a grateful nation... 's concerns that Beijing is becoming more "aggressive" toward the island.
The proposed sale will enhance Taiwan's Patriot missile system "to improve its missile defense capability, defend its territorial integrity, and deter threats for regional stability," the department said in the notice.
The US state department said that the estimated 2010 value would remain US$2.81 billion. The Patriot MSE is a "small, highly agile, kinetic kill interceptor for defense against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and air-breathing threats" and "represents the next generation in hit-to-kill interceptors and provides expanded battlespace against evolving threats."
More from Deutsche Welle on this story from yesterday.
[DW] In a nationwide raid, 25 suspected members and supporters of a terrorist organization in Germany were arrested early Wednesday.
Officials said the network, part of a wider right-wing movement, was already well established with a concrete plan to overthrow the German state by force and install a new government.
WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR
The raids were announced by Germany's federal prosecution agency and German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann. The minister said the investigations were directed against a suspected terrorist network with known ties to the Reichsburger movement. He said that the raids had taken place on individuals suspected of planning an armed attack on state institutions.
"The suspicion exists that an armed attack on constitutional organs was planned," Buschmann wrote.
The search operation is reported to have covered 130 properties belonging to 52 suspects in 11 German states.
According to prosecution officials, the arrested suspects "belong to a terrorist organization" that was believed to have been founded at the end of November 2021.
The group "set itself the goal of overcoming the existing state order in Germany and replacing it with its own form of state, which has already been worked out in outline," prosecutors added.
Of the 25 men and women arrested, 24 were from Germany and one suspected supporter is from Russia. One arrest took place in Austria and one in Italy. There are 27 other suspects, the federal prosecutor's office said.
Later on Wednesday it was confirmed by the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe, southern Germany, that 19 of the 25 suspects were already in pre-trial detention.
The United States has offered support to the German government in the wake of the arrests.
"We remain in close contact with our partners in government and stand ready to help if we are asked to do so," said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday.
TWO RINGLEADERS IDENTIFIED
Prosecutors identified the suspected ringleaders only as Heinrich XIII P. R.
...more fully Heinrich XIII, Prince of Reuss, whose family consider him a whacky conspiracy theorist. The prince just wants to reestablish the monarchy...
and Ruediger v. P., in line with German privacy rules.
The news magazine Der Spiegel reported that the former was a well-known 71-year-old member of a minor German noble family, while the latter was a 69-year-old former paratrooper.
According to prosecutors, P. R., who the group planned to install as the new leader of Germany, had made contact with Russian officials seeking to establish a new order in Germany once the Berlin government was overthrown.
Why would Vladimir Putin’s Russia be interested, or in any way supportive?
A Russian woman, Vitalia B., had allegedly given him help with this. The Russian Embassy in Berlin denied having links to far-right terror groups.
A currently-serving soldier in the Bundeswehr's Special Forces Command (KSK) as well as several Bundeswehr reservists are also among suspects in the case, a spokesperson for Germany's Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) told the DPA news agency.
A search was reported to have been carried out at the soldier's home and his barracks office in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg.
The trigger for the raids was an investigation into another Reichsburger group that had planned to kidnap German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the case revealed the threat posed by the Reichsburger movement.
"The investigations provide a glimpse into the abyss of a terrorist threat from the Reichsburger scene," Faeser said in a statement. "We know how to defend ourselves with all our might against the enemies of democracy," she added.
The president of the German parliament's lower house, Bärbel Bas, said the operation shows "that our democratic constitutional state is attentive and capable of action."
BELIEF IN VIOLENCE TO OVERTHROW 'DEEP STATE'
The group had targeted members of the Bundeswehr and police in a bid to achieve their goals. It had formed a "military arm" and a council presided over by Heinrich XIII P. R.
Speaking at a press conference, Germany's chief federal prosecutor, Peter Frank, said that the organization had formed around P. R. at the end of November 2021.
Frank said the group had established a council that was intended to act as the government of the new state with some individuals already designated for ministerial roles.
Among them was a former member of the Bundestag who was to take over the justice portfolio, Frank said.
To implement their plans, the group's members were prepared to use military means and violence against state representatives and were willing to kill to achieve their goals.
According to investigators, the members of the group "followed a conglomerate of conspiracy myths consisting of narratives of the so-called 'Reichsburger' as well as QAnon ideology."
The prosecutors added that the group's adherents believe Germany is ruled by a so-called "deep state," similar to baseless claims about the United States that were made by former President Donald Trump.
The Reichsburger movement is made up of a number of small organizations and individuals, mainly in the states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Bavaria.
They do not accept the legality of the Federal Republic of Germany or any of its government authorities.
The movement argues that the German constitution prior to World War II was never properly nullified and that the formation of the former West Germany in 1949, and now reunified Germany, was therefore never valid.

[Free Beacon] In the early days of the pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci often dismissed the theory that the coronavirus came from a biological lab in China. He testified last week his reluctance was out of fear that speculation about the virus origins would "increase tensions" with China.
Fauci’s comments came during a seven-hour deposition at the center of a lawsuit filed by the attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana against the Biden administration. Fauci stated throughout the deposition that he was troubled by "wild speculation and allegations" that the Chinese government either deliberately or accidentally leaked the virus from a biological lab in Wuhan. He also said he was "afraid" that "blaming the Chinese" for the outbreak would "increase tensions and reduce cooperation" with Beijing to prevent future pandemics.
"There was no evidence of that at the time, and that's what I was concerned about," said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Fauci’s reluctance to entertain the lab leak hypothesis may have slowed the United States government’s efforts to investigate the origins of the pandemic. A growing body of evidence points to a lab leak as the most likely explanation for the outbreak. Republicans on the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report in October that said an accidental leak from the Wuhan lab was the "most likely" cause of the pandemic.
Fauci has come under scrutiny for not only dismissing the lab leak theory, but also because the National Institutes for Allergy and Infectious Diseases has funded research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The lawsuit alleges that the Biden administration colluded with social media companies to censor politically sensitive content. The attorneys general have accused the administration of pressuring social media companies to censor content that questioned the origins of the virus, and the efficacy of masks and the coronavirus vaccines.
They have also alleged that the FBI worked closely with Facebook and Twitter to block access to an October 2020 news article that revealed emails from Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop. The Washington Free Beacon reported that two FBI officials who met with the Big Tech companies are Democratic donors.
Fauci denied coordinating with social media companies on their virus-related content, but revealed that his daughter worked as a software engineer at Twitter until last year. He also said he met with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on a campaign to promote the coronavirus vaccines.

Since when do US government officials facing a serious crisis go out of their way to favor the interests of a foreign country? Except Israel, of course.
He did it because he was up to his eyeballs in their corruption. He did it, he knew he did it, and was desperately trying to cover it up. Corrupt social media were pleased to help him censor anyone who came close to the truth.
Censorship only happens to people who are a threat. Only to those who are fearless about exposing facts that harm the situation of the powerful and elevate our power, the little guy.

A discussion by Dr. Jordan Peterson with a scientist very familiar with the whole situation. It stinks to high heaven and the virus is very likely to have come from the Wuhan lab. Long but afterwards you'll have a good idea of what's been going on.

Tony has built a hall of mirrors with a large number of public statements, reacted non-public statements and shell companies. It will be hard to navigate through to the truth short of a hostile Musk-like takeover of the government. Congress will be blocked and stymied by the Executive up until Jan 2025, potentially. If a president is elected that wants to placate China and protect the institutions of our government, we will have neither truth nor justice for the millions who died from this manufactured bio agent. If we elect a president not beholden to the bureaucrats, it will be hammer time through Tony’s disco palace. There is no longer a precedent for Executive privilege of previous administrations.

[Rudaw] Dozens of resettled Arabs on Wednesday attacked Kurdish farmers in Daquq district of Kirkuk province after ploughing on their land. Two farmers were maimed. Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called on the Iraqi government to put an end such attacks.
Disputes over land ownership between Arabs, resettled to areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad by the Baathist regime, and Kurdish farmers have existed for years, often causing violence.
Abdulqadir Mohammed, a Kurdish farmer in Daquq, told Rudaw’s Hardi Mohammed on Wednesday that dozens of resettled Arabs had been ploughing on his land for three days with the alleged support of the Iraqi army. He said that when they tried to stop them, the resettled Arabs attacked with stones and guns.
Mohammed said he has all necessary documents to prove the ownership of the land.
"Four tractors were ploughing. The army says that they do not allow this but they are lying... because they are siding with them [Arabs]. They [army] do not allow me to plough," he noted.
He and another person were maimed during the attack. Mohammed said that he was briefly detained before being hospitalised.
PM Barzani said in a statement that these attacks are "concerning."
"Attacking Kurdish farmers in Daquq district, Kirkuk province is concerning. I call on the Iraqi president, prime minister and the speaker of the Iraqi parliament to urgently end these attacks on the Kurdish farmers," said Barzani.
He added that the attacks have been carried out by "some powerful people who illegally try to expel Kurds and confiscate their land."
