Lilyan Tashman was born on October 23, 1896, in Brooklyn, New York, to Rose (Cook) and Morris Tashman. Her parents were Jewish immigrants, her father from Bialystok, Poland, and her mother from Germany. After toying with some stage work, she made her film debut with Experience (1921). That was her only film of that year, and the next year she also made only one film, Head Over Heels (1922) (this was at a time when some studios and their performers were turning out a film per week). She had no other offers for 1923, but her constant rounds of the casting offices finally did some good. In 1924 she appeared in no less than six films. For a while she averaged about seven movies a year. Lilyan was one of a relatively few silent-era performers who easily made the transition into the sound era. In 1934 she finished filming Frankie and Johnnie (1936) and went into the hospital, in New York, to have some tumors removed. It was there she died on March 21, 1934, at the age of 37. The film was released two years after she died.

Lilyan first entered a New York hospital for surgery in 1932, for what was described in the press as an appendectomy. "She was worried about her health," Tashman's friend Virginia Maxwell said after her death. "If the physicians knew she had a tumor, I don't believe they ever told her so." She continued to appear on screen despite her weakening physical health and finished her final role in Frankie and Johnny (1936) just two weeks before her death of abdominal cancer.
Started her career in the legendary Ziegfeld Follies revue, starring alongside several future stars including Marion Davies and Ina Claire.
Renowned for her personal style, Tashman was one of Hollywood's leading "clothes horses" during the early 1930s.
Tashman is alleged to have been romantically involved with Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo and Kay Francis, and to have gotten into physical altercations with Lupe Velez, Constance Bennett and Alona Marlowe, during her time as an actress in Hollywood.
[NTD] A 25-year-old woman from Chicago who was ambushed and shot on Father’s Day by a group of thugs while seated in a car next to her boyfriend died from her injuries on Tuesday, according to reports.
The mother of two young children, Yasmin Perez, was beaten and shot in the neck on June 20 and left to die on the street together with her boyfriend after both getting pulled from their vehicle following a minor car accident.
According to footage of the incident that was shared widely on social media, a group of black men surrounded, attacked, and shot the couple following a rear-end collision.
The graphic video shows the couple lying on the pavement next to their car as one of the suspects unleashes a rain of bullets and then ran off.

The centers of nine districts have fallen to the Taliban in the past one week.
"The presence of infiltrators among the tribal elders and the security forces in this situation is very perilous, this will have negative consequences," said Haleem Fedayee, governor of Paktia.
"Some agents among the tribal elders and the security forces wanted to demoralize the security forces, but the morale of the security forces is very high," said Yarbaz Hamidi, MP from Paktia.
"When the Taliban arrived, they were large in number; the tribal elders started mediation and the entire security forces surrendered and handed over their military equipment," said Baryalai Maftoon, a resident of Zazai Aryoub district in Paktia.
Paktia has 14 districts. The centers of nine districts including Janikhel, Dand-e-Pathan, Samkanai, Zazai Aryoub, Ahmadkhel, Lazhamangal, Mirzaka, Sayed Karam and Rohani Baba have fallen to the Taliban.

"We battled the Taliban for 15 days, our deaders and maimed people remained there, but we never evacuated our checkpoints," said Abdullah, a commander of public uprising forces in Balkh.
"With the help of the people and the security forces, we will soon clear the areas that we lost," said Mohammad Sarwar, a commander of the public uprising forces.
The Afghan politicians have pledged that they will defend against Taliban attacks.
"Today’s circumstances require us to defend the honor and dignity of our people and support our security and defense forces," said Gul Mohammad Erkin, deputy head of the Junbish-e-Milli party.
"Planning is completed and we are determined to retake areas that we lost in the districts," said Haseebullah Quraishi, the commander of the Afghan Public Protection Force in Balkh.
The situation in Mazar-e-Sharif city, the center of Balkh is carrying on as normal, say locals, and businesses are open as usual. However, ars longa, vita brevis... the residents have said that there is a need for more robust security measures to protect the city from Taliban threats.

"We will send forces to 34 provinces of Afghanistan, we will go to Takhar, Mazar, Kandahar and Badakhshan," said Mohammad Iqbal Safai, MP.
"We want to warn the Taliban not to move toward this area. They will be killed, this area has been the graveyard of the Taliban and will remain so," said a member of the public uprising force in Kapisa.
Also in Samangan province the people have taken up arms to fight the Taliban.
"They attacked several districts and faced shameful defeats," said Samangan governor Daud Kalakani.
The head of the National Directorate of Security ...the Afghan national intel agency... (NDS) in Samangan told residents to defend their areas and to show no mercy with the Taliban, specifically to not let them "remain alive."
"It is officially an order, we do not want the Taliban to remain alive, no one should bring them back alive, we don’t want guests, kill them," said Sayed Amir Shah Sadat, the head of the NDS in Samangan.
"One of the key reasons that the public uprising forces are taking shape is that the Taliban treated the people badly in the past," said Mohammad Ismail Khan, a former mujahideen commander.
After dozens of districts fell to the Taliban in the past two months, tribal elders and influential local figures have armed hundreds of their subordinates to deploy them to the front lines of the war.

"We call on the central government to think about the areas lost," said MP Hashmatullah Arman.
"In the present government, those who made sacrifices and worked hard haven’t been appreciated, they weren’t encouraged, the only people appreciated are the ones sitting in luxury offices," said MP Assadullah Shahbaz.
A Pashtun-infested Logar provincial council member said that the Taliban has taken over the center of Azra district in Pashtun-infested Logar.
"The govt thought that the Taliban would try to take over eight strategic districts, but they changed their tactics and instead launched attacks on 200 fronts," said MP Arif Rahmani.
With the announcement of the foreign troop withdrawal, the number of district centers that have fallen to the Taliban in the past two months has reached 80.

To seize security functions in the country, the national army has heightened operations against al-Shabaab in the Middle and Lower Shabelle regions, confiscating sophisticated weapons besides crushing al-Shabaab bases.
And on Tuesday, the team launched a bombardment that left about 17 Death Eaters dead, Col Ali Hashi, who is the SNA front man said, adding that the operation will continue for the remaining months in 2021 before the troops take over security responsibilities from AMISOM forces.

However, the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach... the spokesperson noted, a number of residents were displaced after SNA bombarded Ali Foldhere and Qurac Madobe villages. But in Lower Shabelle, the troops failed to arrive in time at a village near the ancient town of Barawe, giving al-Shabaab a chance to take over. Area Governor Mohammed Nur said the AU forces had left the Forward Operating Base for other supply routes where al-Shabaab has been antagonizing people.
Operations against the Death Eaters seem to be constant and well-strategized given the frequent outing by the military. On Tuesday, at least three al-Shabaab operatives were captured near Mogadishu as part of the strategy to vanquish the group.

[DefenceBlog] A Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk combat utility helicopter of the Philippine Air Force crashed on Wednesday during a training flight.
According to a media statement from Colonel Jesus Villamor Air Base released on Thursday, an S-70i utility helicopter of the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing on a night flight training figured in a mishap a few miles from Colonel Ernesto Rabina Air Base in Capas, Tarlac.
The helicopter was earlier reported to be late from the estimated time of return to its station at Clark Air Base, Pampanga thus prompted the eventual search.
No survivors have been found after one of the Philippine Air Force’s Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk combat utility helicopters crashed. At least six Philippine Air Force (PAF) personnel are believed dead.
The rest of the Black Hawk units will be grounded until the conclusion of the investigation.
Also noted that night flight proficiency training is part of the capabilities of the pilots and crew, in this case, the Black Hawk S-70i, prior to their full deployment to assist our frontline units in their missions. Although with inherent risks, this competency is vital and necessary for the transport and logistics requirements of Unified Commands.

The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder... hard boy during a counter-militancy raid.
Combined forces from the 45th Infantry Battalion and police launched the operation Wednesday night to arrest Abu Sayyaf member Rudymar Habib Jihiiran (alias Gulam) in Patikul, a town on southern Jolo Island, said Maj. Gen. William Gonzales, head of local military forces.
"The security forces were supposed to serve a warrant of arrest against Gulam when he and his comrade fired at our forces," Gonzales said in a statement.
A brief firefight ensued, allowing Gulam and two other holy warriors to escape, Gonzales said, adding that an alleged Abu Sayyaf member identified only as Sawi was killed.
Troops recovered bomb-making paraphernalia after the raid, according to commanding officer Lt. Col. Vicente Mabborang.
In addition, troops rescued Sitti Aisyah Rullie, 13, who apparently was married to a hard boy, Gonzales said.
"She is an Indonesian who is being indoctrinated in conducting bombings and also the wife of Jihiiran," Gonzales said.
Mabborang, meanwhile, identified her as a daughter of holy warriors Rullie Rian Zeke and Ulfah Handayani Saleh, who were identified as the bombers of the Jolo cathedral. The Indonesian couple, who had been indoctrinated by Abu Sayyaf bomber Mundi Sawadjaan, killed 21 people and themselves in in a twin suicide kaboom in January 2019.

"Still, we in the security sector have no choice but to coordinate with concerned agencies and act on this. She is married to a full-fledged Abu Sayyaf Group member, her older brother is an armed member under the Daulah Islamiyah group, and per intel reports, she is being groomed as a jacket wallah. There is a risk here," Gonzales said.
"We sincerely hope that she could be de-radicalized and have another chance at a decent life. Involving children in this kind of terroristic act is outright shameful and a clear violation of our existing laws," he said.
The Indonesian Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to BenarNews requests for comment.
The military in Sulu has said two suspects remain of the seven known foreign holy warriors that had been operating in the island province, Gonzales said. They were identified as the girl’s brother, Ahmad Ibrahim Rullie, and an Egyptian known only as Abdurahman. Both apparently are minors.
