[CNBC, via I Hate The Media] - WASHINGTON — The Steamship Authority of Massachusetts ferry service fell victim to a ransomware attack Wednesday, the latest cyber assault affecting logistics and services in the United States.
The Steamship Authority is the largest ferry service offering daily fares from Cape Cod to neighboring islands Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts, according to the company’s website.
"The Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority has been the target of a ransomware attack that is affecting operations as of Wednesday morning," the company wrote in a statement, adding that customers may experience delays.
A "team of IT professionals" is investigating the impact of the cyberattack, according to the company. I'm mirroring my own drive once a week now.

"He's got Norton!"
That makes one of us - about ten years ago I installed Norton, only to have it trash my boot sector. Twice. During tax season. Like Bill Gates, Peter Norton's a geek I used to look up to.

The only time I took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard, I was just joy-riding on a fine autumn afternoon. No fare was collecting at Wood's Hole. On the way across I learned the fare was only collected on the dock at Martha's Vineyard. So I didn't get off there. Had a very pleasant ocean voyage, with my only expenses being parking at Woods Hole, some beer and a bowl of hot chili. Highly recommended !

Could the hackers be charged 100x's with False imprisonment or Kidnapping?
No. They can't be charged with anything. They are in places like Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. Those who don't actually work for the government are at least protected by them. We're going to need to harden our defenses. No other option.
[FoxNews] A Florida sheriff ripped the state’s juvenile justice system Tuesday night as a 14-year-old girl was "fighting for her life" after she and a 12-year-old boy got into a shootout with Volusia County deputies.
The youths had fled a county juvenile facility then broke into an empty home in Osteen, Volusia County, where they found three firearms and 200 rounds of ammunition, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told reporters.
The youths then allegedly fired upon deputies multiple times before the 14-year-old, armed with a shotgun, was ultimately shot and wounded, the sheriff said. Soon afterward, the 12-year-old dropped an AK-47 rifle he was holding and surrendered.
The girl was "fighting for her life" in a hospital, Samantha Sosa of FOX 35 in Orlando wrote on Twitter.
At a news conference, Chitwood claimed the state’s juvenile justice system had failed to effectively manage the youths.
He said the 12-year-old was an insulin-dependent diabetic who around 5 p.m. had run away from a detention facility with the 14-year-old, who had been detained since being accused of stealing some puppies and then allegedly setting fire to a detention facility in another county before being transferred to Volusia County.

[NYPOST] A racing car enthusiast and social media influencer led police on a chase in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, after his naked girlfriend reported that he attacked her with an ax — then livestreamed his final moments, saying he loved his son before killing himself, according to reports. The 25-year-old woman flagged down San Diego cops last week after her boyfriend, Angel Hernandez Grado, 28, tied her up, sexually assaulted her, strangled her and hit her in the head with an ax, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.
She said Grado — known as S2K Wya online — told her he was going to buy a gun and would kill her if she called police, according to the news outlet.
The woman, who escaped when Grado left the apartment, suffered two broken ribs, swelling to her face and bruises all over her body.
Police were given a description of the suspect and his white BMW X5, which they spotted about 1:30 a.m. on Interstate 15. When they tried to stop the SUV, the driver repeatedly stopped and started driving again, police Lt. Carmelin Rivera told the Union Tribune.

Did it take that long to fix the 'thrill up his leg'?
[Newsbusters / Curtis Houck] - After almost a year and a half away from television, former longtime-MSNBC host Chris Matthews made his return to his old network and time slot on Tuesday’s ReidOut to promote his new book, and sound off on everything from the 2020 election to January 6 to his departure from MSNBC to infrastructure to the Peace Corps to even South African politics.
For much of the nearly 14-minute segment, Matthews seemed to have such a laundry list of things to opine on since he lost his show (over inappropriate comments to women) that it felt like he had retaken command, as if he were the host of Hardball and Joy Reid was a guest.
But for all of Matthews’s creepy, cringeworthy, far-left, and insane takes, the appearance served as a reminder of one undeniable fact about the contrast between Matthews and the hateful and more vengeful Reid: Not only did he deeply care about and love America, but he possessed a respect for the Founders. Compared to a flat-out racist lunatic like Joy Reid, you could make Charles Manson look like Ernie Fucking Pyle.
[NYPOST] Male teachers and students in Spain have been coming to class in skirts in solidarity with a boy who was expelled for wearing one last November. Isn't it grand that this is the most important problem facing Spain!
The instructors’ hope their protest alongside the disciplined student, dubbed #ClothesHaveNoGender (#LaRopaNoTieneGenero), goes to challenge gender stereotypes.
The movement began when math teacher Jose Piñas donned a skirt for his class after student Mikel Gómez, 15, was kicked out of school and forced to see a psychologist after he chose to don a skirt to promote gender nonconformity. A video by Gómez describing the incident was watched by more than 2 million on TikTok.
Piñas, too, had a message for followers on social media following his students’ controversy. "20 years ago I suffered persecution and insults for my sexual orientation in the institute where I am now a teacher," wrote Piñas on social media.

[NYPOST] Perhaps he wants a relationship that won’t "blow up" in his face.
A Kazakhstani bodybuilder who wed his sex doll after a whirlwind romance is open to dating a human on one condition: They like his silicone soulmates as well. He dropped the bombshell on the UK-based "The Dating Show" on FUBAR Radio Friday, the Daily Star reported.
"I was in a real relationship in the past, about seven years," said Yuri Tolochko, who infamously married his sex doll Margo in November after dating her for eight months. A self-professed "pansexual," Tolochko can reportedly love anything from an "image" to a "soul."
Nonetheless, "it’s interesting and important for me, and in the future maybe I will have a real person, but it’s important that she or he likes my dolls too," the muscleman said.
That might be a tall order as the non-synthetic lover would have to live in a veritable dollhouse. The muscleman revealed that he’s divorced Margo so he could take up with two new plastic playmates, Luna and Lola, the Daily Star reported.
Tolochko admitted to cheating on Margo with a "strange object" and a supermarket chicken while she was getting "plastic surgery" over Christmas.

[THEEPOCHTIMES] The tens of thousands of illegal aliens that evade Border Patrol every month—hoping to slip undetected to large cities up north—are now being confronted by sheriffs who are starting to charge them for trespassing, evading arrest on foot, and endangering the life or health of a child.
Seeing no solutions to the border crisis from the federal government, some counties are looking at all possible means to rein in the high-speed vehicle pursuits, trespassing, break-ins, vehicle thefts, and other crimes that are increasing in their communities.
"I’m going to start here, locally. If we catch them, we’re going to start prosecuting these people that are trespassing on y’all’s property," Kinney County Sheriff Brad Coe told an appreciative crowd in Brackettville, Texas, on May 22. "And whatever other legitimate charge we can stack on there to try to deter them from coming to Kinney County. We’re going to try to hold these people accountable."
Neighboring Edwards County is doing the same.
Coe said his county would start charging for trespassing on June 1. He provided ranchers with a form that would authorize the sheriff to file charges on their behalf if someone is caught on their property—saving the rancher from coming into town to press charges every time a trespasser is caught. For many local ranchers, it’s a daily occurrence.
Coe said the sheriff’s office recently filed child endangerment charges against a woman who bailed out of a vehicle that had been pulled over by a deputy. The woman grabbed her 7-year-old child and ran into the scrub without food or water. The deputy caught her and the child and then called the sheriff to ask what she should do with them.
"And I said, ’Now’s the time to start,'" Coe told The Epoch Times. "Let’s file charges against her for child endangerment based on the fact that she ran out of the car, she had no bags, no nothing with her, no food, no water for that kid, 7 years old. You’ve seen the weather down here, some days it’s 90 degrees, 110 degrees. What was she planning on doing with that child in the brush with no food and no water?"
The woman and child were turned over to Border Patrol, while the sheriff’s office will present the child endangerment case to a grand jury to decide if it’s a valid case for prosecution, known as a true bill.
"If they ’true bill’ it, then we’ll put a warrant out for her arrest, and wherever she turns up, we’ll go get her and bring her back," Coe said.
"If we do arrest her, and she gets sentenced to a year or six months, whatever the case may be, if she ever tries to file for some type of assistance here, or become a citizen ... that’d be a check mark against her.
"Some type of consequence has to be there."

Because a week or so ago we were discussing. Why weren't the parents of these illegal foot-hold arriving kids being arrested for Clear Child Endangerment ?

[Rusvesna] President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko invited representatives of the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) law enforcement agencies to Minsk to ask questions of the detained blogger Roman Protasevich.
“If they have any questions, you are welcome to us, ask questions. Because they killed people there, in the Donbass, ”he said during the meeting.
“And he shouted on the plane: 'I face the death penalty.' And our journalists justified that we do not provide for the death penalty under such an article, but for 15 years.
He knew what he was saying, he understood that there, in the south-east of Ukraine, claims could be brought against him, and this is a completely different situation, ”Lukashenko added.
Protasevich is suspected of participating in the activities of an organization that, in accordance with the legislation of the LPR, is recognized as terrorist, the use in an armed conflict of means and methods prohibited by international treaties, weapons of mass destruction prohibited by international treaties, and the commission of genocide, on the basis of crimes under Part 2 of Art. 244, h. 1, 2 of Art. 439, art. 440 of the Criminal Code of the LPR.
Says Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin:
It is worth noting that Belarus does not officially recognize the LPR, and moreover, in Belarus, sentences were passed on citizens who fought on the side of the republics, but in this case, the LPR authorities actually receive an official invitation to conduct investigative actions on the territory of Belarus. At the same time, it is as if implicitly implied that under certain circumstances, after the sentencing, Protasevich may also receive a term in Donbass if Belarus recognizes the jurisdiction of the LPR authorities to prosecute Protasevich for committing war crimes.
On the other hand, it can be a clever move to make Protasevich compliant - you won't cooperate with the investigation, here people from the LPR are waiting for you. They have even more interesting questions for you. Other Russian language reports say Protasevich is cooperating.

[Korrespondent] A new branch of the armed forces will be created in Ukraine - cyber troops. Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, said this on Tuesday, June 1, during a working visit to the Republic of Lithuania, according to the NSDC's Facebook page.
Danilov noted that the challenges and threats in cyberspace today are much more dangerous than nuclear weapons, and the exchange of experience on this issue is extremely important. According to him, activation of cooperation in the framework of the cyber center in Kaunas is relevant in this direction.
The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine stressed the importance of strengthening practical cooperation in the field of cybersecurity. He noted that Ukraine will "maximally support the idea of creating a cyber-NATO, which can become one of the most powerful alliances, given the level of penetration of information technologies into all spheres of the state's life and the shift of confrontation from the conventional to the cybernetic field."
For his part, Kuleshus supported Danilov's proposal to strengthen cooperation in the field of cybersecurity between the two countries and assured that Lithuania supports Ukraine on the way to integration into NATO and the EU.
We will remind that earlier hackers posted a fake order on the websites of the authorities of the Kiev region. Cybercriminals published an order of the alleged head of the Regional State Administration, in which they demanded to provide lists of young men 15 years old and older.
The SBU also announced that it had prevented a hacker attack on the state bodies of Ukraine . A hacker from Zaporozhye received an offer of confidential cooperation from a Russian citizen. He agreed to conduct subversive activities against Ukraine for money.
[NYPOST] A man in China has been infected with the world’s first human case of the H10N3 strain of bird flu — but the risk of community transmission is low, health officials said Tuesday. The 41-year-old man, a resident of the eastern city of Zhenjiang, was hospitalized April 28 after developing a fever and other symptoms, the National Health Commission said.
He was diagnosed with the H10N3 strain of bird flu on May 28, but now is in stable, pH balanced condition and preparing to be discharged from the hospital.
It’s unclear how exactly he became infected with H10N3, but health officials said it was a case of "accidental cross-species transmission."
None of his close contacts have contracted the disease, the commission said, adding that it is a low pathogenic virus.
"The risk of large-scale transmission is low," the commission said.

All of JBS's U.S. Beef Plants Were Forced Shut by Cyberattack
[BLOOMBERG] A cyberattack on JBS SA, the largest meat producer globally, forced the shutdown of all its U.S. beef plants, wiping out output from facilities that supply almost a quarter of American supplies.
All of the company’s fed-beef and regional beef plants were forced to shutter, and all other JBS meatpacking facilities in the country experienced some level of disruption to operations, according to an official with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.
JBS didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The union represents workers at the company’s plants in the U.S.
Slaughter operations across Australia were also down, according to a trade group, and one of Canada’s largest beef plants was idled. That comes after a weekend attack on the Brazilian company’s computer networks, according to JBS posts on Facebook, labor unions and employees.
It’s unclear exactly how many plants globally have been affected by the ransomware attack as Sao Paulo-based JBS has yet to release those details. The prospect of more extensive shutdowns worldwide is already upending agricultural markets and raising concerns about food security as hackers increasingly target critical infrastructure. Livestock futures slumped, while pork prices rose.
Hackers now have the commodities industry in their crosshairs with the JBS attack coming just three weeks after Colonial Pipeline Co., operator of the biggest U.S. gasoline pipeline, was targeted in a ransomware attack. It also happened as the global meat industry battles lingering Covid-19 absenteeism after recovering from outbreaks last year that saw plants shut and supplies disrupted.

[NYPOST] Israeli scientists have found a way to increase the life expectancy of mice by 23 percent, in groundbreaking research that they hope to replicate in humans — who could then reach an average age of 120 years old.
The researchers boosted the life expectancy of 250 rodents by increasing the supply of SIRT6, a protein that normally wanes in the aging process, the Times of Israel reported.
In the peer-reviewed research published in the journal Nature Communications, the scientists also said the protein-enriched animals were less prone to cancer.
"The change in life expectancy is significant when you consider that an equivalent jump in human life expectancy would have us living on average until almost 120," Prof. Haim Cohen of Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan told the news outlet.
Israeli scientists extend mice’s lives by 23 percent, humans could be next
"The changes we saw in mice may be translatable to humans, and if so that would be exciting," added Cohen, whose lab is working on identifying drugs that may allow the SIRT6 to safely be spiked in people.
