[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] ISIS’ West Africa affiliate grabbed credit on Sunday for an ambush last week that killed 33 Malian soldiers in the country’s volatile north, according to a statement published by the SITE Intelligence Group.
Fourteen soldiers were also injured in Tuesday's attack near the northern town of Tessit, located about 60 kilometers southeast of Ansongo in the Gao region, near the border with Niger, according to Mali's army.
The military earlier said that the UN peacekeeping mission known as MINUSMA helped evacuate the maimed soldiers. Helicopters from the French mission in Mali known as Operation Barkhane also helped the Malian military secure the area in the aftermath, a statement said.
ISIS said in a statement on Sunday that its fighters captured three vehicles as well as weapons and ammunition, according to SITE.
The group has grabbed credit for previous attacks on either side of the border that have killed dozens of Malian and Nigerien soldiers. It also carried out the 2017 ambush in the Nigerien village of Tongo Tongo that killed four American special forces troops and five Nigerien soldiers.

#UPDATE: Large explosions reported by locals in the Yemeni capital Sana’a due to Saudi airstrikes on Iranian-backed Houthi forces targets pic.twitter.com/QiJqotJQC5
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Battles in the Marib province, east of the Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of... i capital Sanaa, are continuing to exhaust the Iran-backed Iran's Houthi sock puppets ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him... militias.
Fierce fighting continued on Saturday, especially in western and northwestern parts of the province. The national army, meanwhile, continues to make advances in the southwestern Taiz province.
The Houthis persist on ignoring international and United Nations ...where theory meets practice and practice loses... calls for calm in Marib and demands for a ceasefire that would pave the way for peace talks.
The legitimate government has cast doubt on the sincerity of these calls after the militias escalated their attacks and the international community’s failure to take any action to deter them.
Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani said: "The Houthi escalation demonstrates that its decision to go to war does not lie in its hands and that it is simply a proxy to carry out Iran’s expansionist agenda."
He added that the Houthis are just an armed proxy of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and that they are being managed by Tehran’s so-called envoy in Sanaa. He accused the militias of harming Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... and threatening international marine navigation.
Moreover, he noted that the Houthis escalated their attacks after the US administration of Joe The Big Guy Biden ...46th president of the U.S. Sleazy Dem mschine politician, paterfamilias of the Biden Crime Family... decided to revoke the militias’ terrorist designation.
This demonstrates that the militias do not believe in peace and their ideology is based on killing, making them unqualified to play a constructive role in peace, remarked Eryani.
The escalation demands that the international community blacklist the Houthis and provide serious support for the government in its efforts to end their coup and reclaim the Yemeni state, he urged.
As the minister voiced his plea, the Houthis severed communication lines connecting Sanaa, which is under their control, with government-held regions, including Marib.
Observers interpreted the move as retaliation to the militias’ losses on the ground and failure to advance in oil- and gas-rich Marib.
Local field sources told Asharq al-Awsat that the Yemeni military, with air cover from the Saudi-led Arab coalition, repelled on Saturday new Houthi offensives in western and northwester Marib.
Military media reported that more than 83 gunnies were killed in the battles that lasted more than 35 hours.
A military front man said that the army’s strategy has succeeded in depleting Houthi forces.
In Taiz, the army liberated several hills in the southeastern front as the militias retreated from the area. The military has launched operations in Taiz, which has been besieged by the Houthis for years.

"Natural causes" [NY Post] A former lieutenant in a powerful Mexican drug cartel who broke away from the gang has turned up — wrapped in plastic on a park bench.
Mexican authorities said they believe the tightly wrapped corpse found in a Jalisco park last week is that of Carlos "El Cholo" Enrique Sanchez, an ex-member of the Jalisco New General Cartel before splitting off to form his own gang in 2017, Mexico News Daily said.
Police said the body was found Thursday in Jardin Hidalgo with two signs pinned to his body with knives, including one which read in Spanish, "the traitor El Cholo," the paper said.
The corpse has not been officially identified but comes after a video posted online showed the handcuffed narco being held in front of armed members of the Jalisco cartel — claiming he cooperated with police.
"This material confirms the existence of an orchestrated strategy to destabilize the state by an organized crime group," Jalisco Attorney General Gerardo Octavio Solis Gomez said. "Everything indicates that it’s... Carlos Sanchez Martinez, nicknamed ’El Cholo.'"
According to Mexican News Daily, Sanchez broke off from the Jalisco cartel and formed his own drug gang, the Nuevo Plaza Cartel.
The two gangs have since been at war over control of methamphetamine trafficking in Guadalajara and elsewhere in Central Mexico.

[DW] The coasties was alerted that several boats were in trouble as they attempted to cross the English Channel to Britannia.
French maritime authorities rescued 72 people who were trying to cross the English Channel, officials said on Sunday. There were 11 children in the group.
The migrants colonists had planned to navigate to the UK, but their vessels got into difficulties just off the coast from the French port city of Calais.
One boat was picked up by a French patrol vessel and the 38 people on board taken to Calais.
Some 34 others were rescued by a tugboat operated by the French navy and taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer, also on La Belle France's northern coast.
No injuries were reported and the migrants colonists were handed over to the border police.
KEY MIGRANT ROUTE
A growing number of migrants colonists are using small boats to make the 34 kilometer (21 mile) sea journey to try to reach Britannia, despite the huge dangers. This is partly due to tougher border checks on trucks and trains.
The Channel is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes with strong currents and low water temperatures.
In 2020 alone, there were some 9,500 crossings or attempted crossings, according to the French coastguard, which is more than four times than in the year before.
There have been at least 10 deaths reported over the past two years, prompting both the UK and La Belle France to boost coastal security patrols.

[BenarNews] Philippine troops rescued a 15-year-old kidnapping victim on Sunday in the far south of the country, the last of a group of five Indonesians held by Abu Sayyaf ...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder... since January 2020, authorities said.
Troops secured the teenager, identified as Khairuldin bin Yai Kil, after an encounter in which a suspected kidnap gang leader was captured in Tawi-Tawi, an island province in the far southern Philippines.
"I am happy to report that the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi under Brig. Gen. Arturo Rojas successfully rescued the remaining one Indonesian kidnap victim," said Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, commander of Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom).
Authorities had earlier identified the still-missing member of the group as Mohammad Khairul, age 12. He was one of five Indonesians seized on January 16, 2020 in waters off Lahad Datu, in the Malaysian Borneo state of Sabah, where they were working for a Malaysian fishing firm.
Soldiers rescued three other members of the group in Tawi-Tawi late Thursday. The fifth, identified as La Baa, was said to have been killed by his captors during an encounter with government troops in September 2020 in the jungles of Patikul, in Sulu province.
Khairuldin was recovered in a town called Languyan early on Sunday morning, Vinluan said.
It was not immediately clear if the teenager was abandoned by his captors as they scrambled to flee following a clash with the military on Saturday. That clash left their leader, known as Majan Sahijuan, maimed, and he was subsequently captured by the military.
Sahijuan is listed by authorities in Sabah as an Abu Sayyaf member responsible for a spate of cross-border abductions and a notorious kidnap-gang leader. Little else is known about him.
Members of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 6 tracked down Sahijuan’s group after receiving reports from local people about armed civilians in the area, Vinluan said
The Abu Sayyaf members were believed to have made it to shore after their speed boat capsized on Thursday. Three Indonesian hostages were rescued and an alleged Abu Sayyaf bully boy was captured at the time.
Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Cirilito Sobejana himself flew to Tawi-Tawi to fetch the remaining hostage in order to reunite him with the others, authorities said.
[IsraelTimes] A kaboom Sunday killed one person and maimed three in southeastern Iran, a state news agency reported, blaming a "terrorist group" linked to Tehran’s enemies.

Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol... for the United States and its allies, had carried out "the earth-shattering kaboom at one of Saravan’s squares, leading to one being killed and the injury of three citizens crossing the street," IRNA said.
Sistan-Balochistan straddles the border with Pakistain and has a large, mainly Sunni ethnic Baluch population.
The province has long been a flashpoint for cross-border attacks by separatists and Sunni bully boys. A Sunni separatist group affiliated with al-Qaeda and known as Jeish al-Adl, or Army of Justice, operates in the area.
The area is one of the least developed and poorest parts of Iran.
Sistan and Balochistan province is a well-worn trafficking route for drugs and petrol and has been the scene of occasional festivities between Iranian government forces and various turban groups.
The Sunday attack came almost a month after deadly festivities with fuel smugglers in Sistan-Balochistan left two people dead, including a policeman in Saravan, according to Iranian authorities.
The UN Human Rights Office said at least 12 people were reportedly killed, two of them minors, and accused Iranian security forces of using excessive force.
But little information filtered out due to a near-total shutdown of the internet with activists saying the government uses the tactic repeatedly when protests erupt.
The internet shutdown was a "measure authorities appear to be using as a tool to conceal gross human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... violations and possible international crimes such as extrajudicial killings," freedom of expression groups Access Now, Article 19 and Miaan Group said in a joint statement with Amnesia Amnesty International earlier this month.
[IsraelTimes] Amnesia Amnesty International calls for immediate release of labor activist Mehran Raoof, who was reportedly arrested while helping to translate English-language news articles into Persian.
Rights groups Amnesia Amnesty International has called for the unconditional release of a British-Iranian man who they said was being held in solitary confinement in Iran, as new details emerged about his case.
The London-based NGO said labor rights activist Mehran Raoof was being "arbitrarily detained" in Tehran’s Evin prison, where fellow dual national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was held for several years.
"He is being held in prolonged solitary confinement, in violation of the absolute prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment," it said, noting that agents from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had arrested him in October, 2020.
"He is a prisoner of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released."
The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported this weekend that Raoof, a former teacher from north London, was helping to translate English-language news articles into Persian around the time of his arrest. Satar Rahmani, a London-based colleague, told the paper he was detained along with 15 other workers, noting that trade unions are banned in Iran.
"They were using a coffee shop as a place to talk about workers’ rights," the Telegraph quoted Rahmani as saying.
The stupidity of some people is appalling.
"But without their knowing, there was a spy, a maiden of tender years, in the coffee shop who secretly recorded their discussions, and that led to the arrests."
I am shocked. Shocked!
The paper said Raoof was only known to have made contact with the outside world once since then, in a phone call with a distant relative in Iran, three months ago.
DIPLOMATIC TENSIONS
There are at least four UK-Iranian dual nationals currently being detained or facing charges in Iran.
The UK government has spent several years trying to secure the release of Zaghari-Ratcliffe, in a case that has sharpened diplomatic tensions between the Islamic Theocratic Republic and Britannia.
She was detained while on holiday in 2016 and convicted of plotting to overthrow the regime in Tehran — accusations she strenuously denied.
The 42-year-old was working at the time as a project manager for the Thomson Rooters Foundation, the media organization’s philanthropic wing.
She has been under house arrest in recent months and had her ankle tag removed, giving her more freedom of movement and allowing her to visit relatives in Tehran.
Tehran earlier this month called on Britannia to "avoid politicizing" her case, after London said her latest appearance in court on new charges was "unacceptable" and "arbitrary."
The hearing last Sunday, in which the mother-of-one reportedly on Sunday denied all charges, dashed hopes of family and supporters for her prompt return home.
Her husband, Richard Ratcliffe has told AFP in London that Nazanin was being used as a "political bargaining chip." He was referring to a dispute between Tehran and London concerning a British debt dating back more than 40 years for military tanks paid for by the deposed shah.
When the shah was ousted in 1979, Britannia refused to deliver the tanks to Iran, and London has admitted it owed the Islamic Theocratic Republic several hundred million pounds.

[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Regime artillery fire killed five civilians including a child when it hit a hospital entrance in Syria's last major opposition bastion of Idlib on Sunday, a war monitor said.
The attack on the northwestern town of Atareb came despite a Russian-Ottoman Turkish ceasefire since March 2020 supposed to protect the wider krazed killer-held stronghold.
It "hit the courtyard and main entrance of the hospital inside a cave, killing five civilians including a child and a hospital employee," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Eleven others were maimed including healthcare staff, said the Britannia-based monitoring group's head Rami Abdel Rahman.
The Idlib region is home to 2.9 million people, of whom two thirds have been displaced from their homes by conflict, the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... says.
The region on the border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... is controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State... , which is led by members of Syria's former al-Qaeda affiliate, but several opposition groups are also present.
The ceasefire brokered by opposition-backer Turkey and regime ally Russia last March stemmed a months-long regime military offensive on the bastion that killed hundreds of civilians and displaced more than a million people from their homes.
It has since largely held despite repeated violations including Russian air strikes on the region, according to the Observatory.
Medical facilities have been hit multiple times in the Idlib region during the war.
Between 2016 and 2019, the World Health Organization documented up to 337 attacks on healthcare sites in Syria's northwest.
The war has killed more than 388,000 people and displaced millions at home and abroad since starting in 2011 with the brutal repression of peaceful anti-government protests.
Seventy percent of healthcare workers have fled Syria since the start of the conflict, while after years of bombardment only 58 percent of hospitals remain fully functional, the UN says.

[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] An explosion killed one person and injured three others on Sunday in a southeastern Iranian town that was the center of bloody unrest last month, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported.

Earlier this month a UN human rights One man's rights are another man's existential threat. front man said at least a dozen people and possibly up to 23 had been killed in Saravan and other parts of Sistan-Baluchestan province where Revolutionary Guards and security forces used lethal force against fuel couriers from ethnic minorities, and protesters.
The shooting of people carrying fuel across the border led to protests that spread from Saravan to other areas of Sistan-Baluchestan, including the capital, Zahedan.

[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] The Ottoman Turkish air force conducted its first strikes in 17 months against a zone in north Syria held by Kurdish fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces on Saturday night, a monitor said.
"A Ottoman Turkish fighter jet has struck military positions of SDF in Saida village in Ain Issa countryside... which caused loud explosions," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.
This was the first aerial raid since "Operation Peace Spring", it added -- an October 2019 military campaign launched by Ankara and its Syrian allies against the SDF in northern Syria.
That operation, interrupted after two accords negotiated by Ankara with first Washington, and then Moscow, allowed The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund... to seize control of a "safe zone" inside Syria around 120 kilometers long and 32 kilometers deep.
The village of Ain Issa, however, remained in the hands of Kurdish forces.
The Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s come the same day of "violent mostly peacefulfestivities" and "intensive rocket fire" on the frontlines of Ain Issa district between SDF forces and Ottoman Turkish-backed factions, the SOHR said, adding there had been confirmed casualties.
"Clashes between the two sides have been going on for the last 24 hours... Ottoman Turkish forces have had difficulty advancing since the SDF destroyed a Ottoman Turkish tank," the director of the SOHR, Rami Abdul Rahman, told AFP.
The Syrian Kurdish-led People's Protection Units, which form a vital component of the SDF, are considered by Turkey to be a "terrorist offshoot" of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party.
But they have also been a key ally to the United States and others in the battle against ISIS in Syria.

The base, one of the oldest in the country, is Martin’s official residence.
The threats are one reason the Army has been pushing for more security around Fort McNair, which sits alongside Washington’s bustling newly developed Waterfront District.
City leaders have been fighting the Army’s plan to add a buffer zone of about 250 feet to 500 feet (75 meters to 150 meters) from the shore of the Washington Channel, which would limit access to as much as half the width of the busy waterway running parallel to the Potomac River.
The Pentagon, National Security Council and NSA either did not reply or declined to comment when contacted by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.
