[AnNahar] Egyptian troops have demolished more than 12,300 buildings in the Sinai Peninsula since 2013 in a campaign of forced evictions that likely amount to "war crimes", Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.
A decade-old jihadist insurgency in North Sinai province escalated in 2013 when the army overthrew Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.
"Between late 2013 and July 2020, the army destroyed at least 12,350 buildings, mostly homes, most recently in the El Arish area," HRW said.
"The army has also razed, ruined and closed off approximately 6,000 hectares (nearly 15,000 acres) of farmland, mostly since mid-2016," it added.
HRW said the demolitions and forced evictions "are violations of international humanitarian law, or the laws of war, and likely amount to war crimes".
Yeah, yeah. So’s terrorism.
The Lions of Islam profess loyalty to the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... group, the jihadist organization which proclaimed a "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq in 2014 before succumbing to multiple offensives.
That’ll be Ansar Bayt al Maqdis/ISIS in the Sinai Province.
Most of their attacks have been in the Sinai Peninsula but they have also used the territory as a launchpad for attacks elsewhere in Egypt.
In February 2018, the government launched a nationwide operation against bully boys, focused on North Sinai.
"The demolitions and evictions reflect an abusive official mentality that dismisses the well-being of Sinai residents, which is key to the region's security and stability," HRW's deputy Middle East and North Africa director Joe Stork said.
HRW said analysis of satellite imagery collected between December 2017 and July 2020 showed the army had been clearing a buffer zone around the airport in the North Sinai quiet provincial capital El Arish.
In addition to the 2 kilometer wide strip from the Gaza border where they’ve been digging up Hamas tunnels that ended in local houses, businesses, and warehouses? Okay, then.
It said compensation payments for evicted residents had been slow and opaque with "thousands never listed".
There was no immediate response to the allegations from the Egyptian authorities.
A previous report published by HRW in 2019 detailing "serious abuses" by the army against civilians in North Sinai drew angry denials from Cairo.
Dozens of security personnel have been killed in North Sinai since February 2018, according to official figures.
The army says some 970 suspected Lions of Islam have also been killed.
But the province has remained largely closed to journalists, making the compilation of independent casualty figures almost impossible.
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] The Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of... i army continued to make advances in the battlefronts in the Marib, Taiz and Hajjah provinces dealing the Iran-backed Iran's Houthi sock puppets ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him... militias heavy losses.
Military media said at least 250 Houthis were killed in the fiercest battles yet to take place in the three provinces.
Defense Minister Mohammed al-Maqdashi stressed on Tuesday that the legitimate authorities were determined to restore the state’s authority and end the Houthi coup.
The people, armed forces and legitimate leadership are determined to defeat the militias and liberate the Yemenis from the crimes, violations and suffering imposed by the terrorist Houthis, he added as he toured the al-Kasara frontlines west of Marib.
He said that the Houthis had amassed all of their forces, tanks and weapons, some of which they had seized and others which were provided by Tehran, towards their final stand on the border between Marib and al-Jawf.
Their forces, however, have fallen before the perseverance of the army, he declared.
On the ground, the military managed to turn around Houthis lines in al-Kasara and cut their supply routes amid heavy fighting and coalition air strikes that destroyed the militias’ reinforcements.
A field source said at least 80 Houthis were killed and dozens maimed in the fighting. The coalition destroyed six Houthi vehicles that were bringing in reinforcements, killing everyone on board.
In Hajjah, military media said 28 holy warriors were killed during battles with the army on the Abs district front. Field sources estimated that some 100 Houthis have been killed in two days of fighting there.
Meanwhile, ...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake... military sources said the army has made significant advances on the Jabal al-Habshi front west of Taiz amid a complete collapse in Houthi ranks. The forces launched a widescale attack on the al-Ainain front, liberating several areas.
Dozens of Houthis were killed and injured in the fighting.
The army underlined the importance of regions that were liberated north of Jabal al-Habshi, saying that they overlook the main route (Hajda-al-Ramada) that connects Taiz city to the Hodeidah province.
Government forces in Taiz are seeking to capture the strategic town of al-Burj and complete the liberation of northwestern regions in the province.
In retaliation to their losses on various fronts, the Houthis fired a ballistic missile at residential neighborhoods in northwestern parts of Marib city.
Medical sources in Taiz said that Houthi shelling on villages in Maqbana left a child dead and another maimed.
Yemeni rights groups have said that Houthi ballistic missiles and armed drone attacks on residential and civilian areas in Marib have killed 918 civilians, including women and kiddies.
According to local reports from the Taiz Governorate, the Yemeni government forces captured the village of Al-Ahtoub and nearby Sarihim Mountain after launching a swift counter-offensive against the forces of the Ansarallah Movement.
Furthermore, at the Maqbanah District of the Taiz Governorate, heavy clashes between the two opposing parties continued, with neither side managing to gain the upper hand in the battle.

While it reduces other more costly City budget items like POLICE. Thus allowing "privileged" areas better protection, that otherwise would have been used in the "Zones". ☺
I do have to ask why the cities continue to supply City services like water/sewer, Health Clinics and etc...once these autonomous zone declare themselves?

/\ The services will obviously continue. Look no further than de facto 'Autonomous Zones' of 'Waconda on the Chattahoochee' Georgia counties of Fulton, Dekalb, Clayton, and Douglas.

In the post-war South, abuse by the carpetbagging officials sent by the occupying Union forces spurred the rise of counter-revolutionary forces like the KGC. The Marxist Bidet Administration and Progressive Pelosi have created an insurrection strawman that unwittingly is being spawned by all they are doing. Sadly, the endless turmoil will herald the tragedy of the dawning Chinese World Order and future globalists will long for the Golden Era their ilk are ending.
American Exceptionalism was a real moment in human political history, and it was doomed by the largesse it created and the arrogance of being tolerant beyond reason and because we didn’t treasure its fundamentals enough to protect them zealously. I truly wish i am wrong but .... For the gloom in your morning coffee I offer my sincere apologies.
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] A top Ottoman Turkish prosecutor filed a case with the constitutional court on Wednesday demanding the closure of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) party, in the culmination of a years-long clampdown on parliament’s third largest party.
The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... has a long history of shutting down political parties which it regards as a threat and has in the past banned a series of other pro-Kurdish parties.
The HDP had recently come under intensified pressure, with nationalist allies of President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First ...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important... ’s AK Party (AKP) calling for it to be banned over alleged ties to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) krazed killer group.
That has coincided with falling poll support for the AKP and its nationalist allies as Erdogan’s government battles the economic fallout of the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... pandemic.
The embattled lira extended losses on concerns about the political impact of the move, weakening 2% to 7.64 against the dollar.
"(The HDP) move together with the PKK terrorist group and other linked organizations, they act as a branch of the organization with the aim of breaking the unity of the state," appeals court chief prosecutor Bekir Sahin said in a statement.
The HDP, which has 55 seats in the 600-member parliament, denies any links to the krazed killers.
The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... . It has fought an insurgency against the state in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
