[Washington Examiner] Criminal cartels are using groups of migrants as a distraction for their drug smuggling activities on the southern border, according to the commander of U.S. Northern Command.
The military has noticed a "relationship" exists between migrants and drug flows, Gen. Terrence O'Shaughnessy said during a talk the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Monday. His command is trying to help the Department of Homeland Security counter the problem.
"The same cartels that are working the drug smuggling are working the migrants and where the migrants are going," O'Shaughnessy said. "We also see them using the migrants as a distraction. And so as they push a group of migrants over here, the drug smuggling goes over there. And we see that coordinated behavior, which we are trying to help plug some of those gaps."
O'Shaughnessy said he was surprised to learn the severity of the narcotics problem when he took over as the head of NORTHCOM in May 2018. As the military command principally responsible for the defense of the U.S. homeland, NORTHCOM plays a supporting role in counternarcotics initiatives, specifically with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
"And why? It's because this is a national crisis. 70,000 Americans killed [by] overdose," O'Shaughnessy said. "How can the Department of Defense not be part of that solution set?"

In Operation order Ranger I and II in 89 & 90 our OP and surveillance personnel noted this as common practice. The Border Patrol agents called it flooding the zone even then. When we built the first wall along the 14 miles in San Diego, they shifted to Tecate and the Pinto Wash. 30 ytlatsr, same sh*t, different day.

[ToloNews] Local officials said telecom companies’ offices were closed for 24 hours for shutting down their services at nights.
Telecom services are shutting down their services in the last two nights in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif apparently due to "security threats", residents and local officials said.
The telecom companies have not commented on this decision but sources said that the telecom companies shut down their activities due to security threats.
Balkh Police Chief Gen. Munir Ahmad Fayiz said the offices of the four major telecom companies ‐ Afghan Wireless, Roshan, Etisalat, and MTN ‐ were closed for 24 hours for disconnecting their services in the last two nights.
He said telecom companies have not shared the problem with the police.
"There is no major security threat to them [telecom companies in Mazar]," the Police chief said. "We have not been informed about any threats to them. We sealed their offices according to the warning we had given to them."
The shutdown in services has increased the price of the SIM card of government-owned Salaam Company to Afs1,200, almost $15 ‐ in the black market.
"We will introduce them to judicial institutions if they sold the SIM cards more than its normal price," said Mohammad Taqi Poya, the head of Directorate of Telecommunication and Information Technology in Balkh.
Balkh residents said the issue is concerning and it must be solved.
"SIM cards are not available; they are found in the black market," said Khwaja Sharif, a Balkh resident.
"People are facing problems and all communications were disconnected," said Qadir, a Balkh resident.
Head of Balkh Provincial Council, Afzal Hadid, said efforts are underway to solve the problem.
"What is the solution? Those who want to create a problem for our people must be stopped. We are trying to find alternatives and I am sure that this problem will be solved in the near future," he said.
[KhaamaPress] The U.S. President Donald Trump ...His ancestors didn't own any slaves... has claimed that he could win the war in Afghanistan in a week and could wipe the country ’off the face of the earth’ in ten days.
However, you can observe a lot just by watching... he said he did not want to kill ten million people, suggesting that pakistan could play a vital role to ’help the U.S. out.’
He made the remarks during a presser with the visiting Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan ... aka The Great Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems... at the White House.
Calling the war ’ridiculous’, Trump went on to claim that the fight against Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... has made the US the world’s ’coppers.’
He Said "I have plans on Afghanistan that if I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the earth, would be gone, it would be over. Literally in ten days."
Meanwhile, ...back at the secret hideout, Scarface Al sneeringly put his proposition to little Nell... the Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan said "And there is no military solution in Afghanistan, there is no military solution because as Mr. President says if you go out all military there will be millions and millions of people who would die."
He also expressed hopes that they would be able to ask the Taliban in coming days to negotiate with the Afghan government and come to a settlement and political solution.

Hey Herb read history? Anyone f*** with the Mongols? Sherman said it correctly - war is hell. We just don't practice war anymore. Probably why we don't see any 'win' anymore just endless police actions around the world.
Don't do war. It's nasty, destructive, and exhausting. However, as Trotsky said - you may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you. If you are going to do it, don't hold back. Don't let anyone tell you how to fight a war without explaining what 'winning' means. Winning isn't about making friends or making people feel virtuous about themselves. Winning means they leave you alone and don't disturb you.

Putting on my contrarian hat let me (partially) agree with HMcC. It is crappy that I have reached the point that genocide is not a horrific idea. On the other hand, I put the blame where it belongs - on a 8th century mindset that not just accepts genocide but makes a religious duty, along with slavery and subjugation of everyone other than their own particular cult/sect.
[KhaamaPress] The Chief of Army Staff of Pakistain Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and the U.S. officials will hold talks on Afghanistan in Washington.
Pakistain’s Dawn News reported that Gen Bajwa is expected to meet US defence secretary, the current and the newly nominated chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior military officials during his visit to the Pentagon
Meanwhile, ...back at the saw mill, Scarface Al had tied Little Nell to the log and was about to turn on the buzz saw... officials in the United States have said the meetings will focus on Pakistain’s support for the Afghan grinding of the peace processor and the security situations in Afghanistan and Pakistain.
Furthermore, a senior U.S. official has told VOA that President Donald Trump ...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US... will press Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan ... aka The Great Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five... for assistance in advancing the grinding of the peace processor in Afghanistan when the two leaders meet at the White House on Monday.
The official further added that "The purpose of the visit is to press for concrete cooperation from Pakistain to advance the Afghanistan grinding of the peace processor and to encourage Pakistain to deepen and sustain its recent effort to crackdown on faceless myrmidons and gunnies within its territory."

The Giza criminal court says the defendants all traveled abroad to fight for IS and receive military training.

The verdicts can be appealed, and the court has dropped the charges against another defendant.

It is NOT an act of piracy. It was an act of war. There are differences. The people doing it should be treated like POWs if captured, for instance (they are actually wearing a uniform and making no bones about what they are up to). Pirates you can just shoot and dump overboard, should you feel like it. Also, it means that you should use your military to attack their nation and do things like seize their interests in your home territories rather just step up patrols of waters where pirates (non-state actors) are operating.

[Ynet] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund... 's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday that if a planned safe zone in northern Syria is not established, and if threats continue against Turkey, Ankara will launch a military operation east of the Euphrates river.
Turkey has been in talks with the United States over the establishment of a safe zone across its border in northeast Syria, where the United States supports the Kurdish YPG militia. Ankara sees the YPG as a terrorist organization.
In an interview with broadcaster TGRT Haber, Cavusoglu also said he hopes an agreement will be reached after talks on Monday with U.S. special envoy for Syria James Jeffrey, who is visiting Turkey.

[AlAhram] Syrians living illegally in Istanbul have until August 20 to leave the city or face expulsion, authorities warned Monday, as hostility mounts towards the millions of refugees in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... Turkey has 3.5 million Syrian refugees -- more than any other country -- but they are only under "temporary protection" because the government does not offer them formal refugee status.
Under the system, they must stay in the province to which they are assigned, and can only visit other cities with short-term passes.
In a statement published in Ottoman Turkish and Arabic, the Istanbul governor's office said it would no longer tolerate Syrians who are assigned to other provinces.
"Foreigners of Syrian nationality who are not registered under the system of temporary protection or who do not have a residency permit will be expelled to their designated provinces by the Ministry of the Interior," it said.
Those without any registration papers at all would be sent back to Syria, it added.
But Mahdi Daoud, who heads a coalition of Syrian NGOs in Istanbul, said more than 600 people were already sent back to Syria last week -- even though most had protection cards issued for other Ottoman Turkish provinces.
"They were forced to sign documents saying they returned voluntarily to Syria," he told AFP.
He said his coalition, the Forum for Syrian Associations, had complained to the Ottoman Turkish authorities and there had not been any new cases since Saturday.
Security forces have stepped up identity checks in recent days in Istanbul -- at metro and railway stations and in areas with large numbers of Syrians.
There are currently 547,000 Syrians living in the city, according to the governor's office, which said no new registrations were being accepted for refugees.
Daoud said nearly 26,000 Syrians live in Istanbul without a protection card. He was not sure how many had cards from other provinces.
A survey published this month by Kadir Has University in Istanbul showed growing hostility towards Syrian refugees in the city, rising from 54.5 percent of respondents in 2017 to 67.7 percent in 2019.
#SyriansOut became part of the discourse during municipal elections this year -- with many complaining about the number of Arabic signs appearing on shops in Istanbul and elsewhere.

[IsraelTimes] Mohammed Saud, a Netanyahu fan touring the country at the Foreign Ministry’s invitation, is heckled, spat on and has chairs hurled at him.
A Saudi blogger who is in Israel at the invitation of the Foreign Ministry was attacked and cursed at Monday, during a visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Video of the incident shows a child spitting on Mohammed Saud as he visited the holy site, while others yell at him to leave.
In another clip, chairs and other objects are thrown at Saud as he walks through one of the Old City’s alleys.
One man is heard shouting at Saud, "Go to a synagogue." Others are heard calling him an "animal" and "Zionist trash."
A Foreign Ministry front man condemned Saud’s harassment.
"We strongly condemn the cruel and immoral behavior of some Paleostinians near the al-Aqsa Mosque toward a Saudi media personality who came to Jerusalem to be a bridge to peace and understanding between peoples," Nizar Amer wrote on Twitter.
Saud is one of six Arab journalists and bloggers, including representatives from Jordan and Iraq, brought to Israel by Israel’s Foreign Ministry, which has sought to highlight growing ties between Israel and the Arab world.
The blogger, who speaks Hebrew, is an unabashed partisan of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; his Twitter feed is loaded with messages of support for Israel, Netanyahu and the Likud party. His username on the micro-blogging platform is written in Hebrew as well as in Arabic, and his description includes an Israeli flag emoji and the words "Only Bibi!" using Netanyahu’s nickname.
The group of journalists and bloggers were slated to visit Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, the Knesset, holy sites, and to meet with members of Israeli academia during the trip.
Saud is also reportedly expected to meet Netanyahu on Tuesday.
The ministry has said the visit has "the aim of exposing the journalists ‐- some of whom come from countries that do not have diplomatic relations with Israel -‐ to Israeli positions on diplomatic and geopolitical issues."
Both the Foreign Ministry of Iraq and members of parliament’s foreign affairs committee were not able to comment on the issue to Rudaw English on Monday.
Earlier this month, Iraq’s Ambassador to United States Fareed Yasseen seemed to argue that Baghdad should have some kind of relations with Israel, noting the Iraqi diaspora there.
Some in the Iraqi government attacked the diplomat and called for his resignation. However, alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk... the Iraqi foreign ministry defended their diplomat and accused some media of twisting his message.
Upon receiving news of the Iraqi journalist's visit to Israel from some local media agencies, the Iraqi Syndicate of Journalists strongly condemned the visit.
"We strongly condemn any Iraqi journalist who visits Israel, due to political reasons, the hatred Israel has toward Arab states in the Middle East, and all the killings and massacres Israel is committing against the people of Paleostine," it responded.
"The syndicate will take legal action against any Iraqi journalist who would visit Israel now or in the future."
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] An Israeli minister boasted Sunday that his country was the only one that 'has been killing Iranians', after tensions between Britain and Iran rose in the Gulf.
Regional Cooperation Minister Tzachi Hanegbi's comments to public radio were a reference to Israeli strikes in neighbouring Syria against Iranian and Hezbollah military targets.
But they came after Iran seized a British-flagged tanker on Friday, adding to tensions between Washington and Tehran linked to a 2015 nuclear deal.
That's what happens when you take out unused hardware and try to dust it off, I guess.
According to Scramble Facebook News Magazine, it is now (still unconfirmed) reported that the aircraft involved is F-14A 3-6003. According to the picture of the fatal Tomcat, the airframe is completely destroyed.
As we have reported yesterday, one of the few remaining IRIAF F-14A Tomcat fighter jets was involved in a crash at home base Esfahãn-Shahid Beheshti International Airport (Iran).
The IRIAF F-14A from the 8th Tactical Air Base crashed while it was landing. The aircraft reported an emergency to air traffic control during its training flight, subsequently the fighter was approved to make a quick landing at Esfahãn, but the aircraft was not able to hold position and skidded off the runway. Both pilot and Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) were forced to eject. They parachuted safely to mother earth. I guess they weren't aware that an F-35 can do that.
It is said that the IRIAF only have some twelve to fourteen operational F-14A and F-14AMs left. The IRIAF faces large problems to keep their Tomcats in the air (the AM version is locally modified and equipped with new avionics and multi-function displays in the cockpit, counter measure systems, radar warning receivers and an inertial navigation system).
The U.S. Navy retired the iconic Tomcat on Sep. 22, 2006 and today the F-14 remains in service with IRIAF.
In January 2007, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced that sales of spare F-14 parts would be suspended over concerns of the parts ending up in Iran and in Jul. 2007 the remaining U.S. F-14s were shredded to ensure that any parts could not be acquired.
However in Oct. 2010 IRIAF commander stated that his country was overhauling its F-14s and mentioned that Iran-made radar system had been installed on the fighter.
Moreover in the summer of 2010, Iran requested that the U.S. deliver the 80th F-14 it had purchased in 1974, but delivery was denied after the Islamic Revolution.

Classy move, Russia. I don't know what effect you think it will have such as preventing war or the effective use of military force, but it shows your intentions.
The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations and Israeli Airports Authority in late June 2019 announced that many flights lost the GPS satellite signal while flying into or out of Ben Gurion International in Israel, Breaking Defense reported. There has been no risk to passengers, according to the IAA. The affected aircraft simply switched to backup systems.
Russian forces have been jamming GPS systems in the Middle East. The electronic-warfare campaign could affect U.S. forces gathering in the region in advance of potential strikes on Iran.

According to Wikipedia Russia has 24 operational Glonass Satellites.
A single Starship mission (when operational sometime next year) should be able to open it's maw and capture all 24, bring them back to the Earth and turn them over to the NRO for modification and reorbit...
It would be turnabout fair play! List of functional Glonass Sats

The Russians are jamming from Latakia where they have Hmeimen air base. The jihadis have been sending suicide drones to Hmeimen. Nothing about supporting Iran or messing with US aircraft.

"ground-based GPS systems are unaffected"
The ground based receivers are below the radio horizon and aren't 'hearing' the jamming. The ones in the air are getting blotted out by the louder signal.

Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. May is chairing a meeting of Britannia’s COBR emergency response committee and foreign minister Jeremy Hunt is expected to make a statement to parliament later on Monday to face criticism that Britannia should have escorted the ship.
"The ship was seized under false and illegal pretenses and the Iranians should release it and its crew immediately," the front man told news hounds.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Russia’s Ministry of Defense denied on Monday its planes carried out Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s on the rebel-held Syrian city of Maarat al-Numan that hit a popular market and residential neighborhoods.
The raids killed at least 20 people in the densely-populated city in the south of Idlib province earlier on Monday and were believed to have been carried out by either Syrian or Russian jets, rescuers and residents said.
"Russia’s Air Force did not carry out any missions in the given region of the Syrian Arab Republic," the ministry said in a statement.
