[ABC] PORTLAND, Ore. A 51-year-old charged with animal abuse and sexually assaulting an animal has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, three years probation on each charge and may not possess a dog for 15 years.
The Oregonian reported that Fidel Lopez got the maximum penalty after he pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated animal abuse and sexual assault of an animal on his Lhasa Apso mix, Estrella.
He was released the same day after getting credit for time served.
"If it could have been more, I would have gladly given you more," the judge said in court.
In court Monday, prosecutors said his fiance found their dog bleeding, whining, and hiding under a couch in November. The dog was taken to the vet, where Estrella had to be euthanized due to the injuries.
Prosecutors said veterinarians performed an animal sexual assault forensic evaluation, which confirmed Estrella had been sexually assaulted.
A DNA test proved that Lopez was involved in the sexual assault.
[NYP] "Empire" star Jussie Smollett ‐ who had 16 felony disorderly conduct charges against him in Chicago in February that were then dropped last month ‐ has been spotted vacationing in Hawaii.
The alleged hate-crime hoaxer ‐ who could still face a lawsuit from the city of Chicago to recover the more than $130,000 cost of investigating his case ‐ was photographed laughing and looking carefree at the Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park in Kailua-Kona.
Smollett’s hanging out with his family and was also seen carrying a boogie board.

"Mrs. Smollett, Detective Friday, Chicago Police Department. I'm sorry to interrupt your vacation, but we responded to a report of a burglary at your address. Unfortunately, we were too late arriving and all of your items were stolen. Not a thing left. The best lead we have is two guys in MAGA hats using a moving van, but we can't seem to find any video. Again, sorry, and try to enjoy the rest of your vacation."
[Guardian] A suspect has been arrested after three churches with majority African American congregations in central Louisiana were destroyed by fire in little more than a week.
At a Thursday news conference, the suspect was identified as Holden Matthews, a 21-year-old white man, and the son of a sheriff’s deputy in the parish. He faces three counts of simple arson of a religious building.
"This community is safe again," said the Louisiana fire marshal, H "Butch" Browning. "We are extremely, unequivocally confident that we have the person who is responsible for these tragic crimes."
Authorities said they had not yet made a determination as to whether the fires were inspired by racial bias or hate, and that any application of hate crime statutes would be left to FBI and other federal officials.
"Right now we are just making sure we gather all the facts," said the FBI special agent in charge, Eric Rommal.

[PAGESIX] Nipsey Hussle’s funeral procession was marred by more "senseless violence" on Thursday night ‐ with one person being shot to death and three others maimed, according to cops.
"We must stop this," tweeted Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore, who reported the drive-by shooting on Twitter.
"Victims are 3 Male Blacks and 1 Female Black ‐ ages from 30-50 years old," Moore said. "Tragically one is deceased."
Hussle’s funeral procession had started earlier in the day and was in the area of 103rd and Main streets when the shooting happened "in the midst" of it, Moore said.
"Suspects in gray Hyundai fired on the victims," he tweeted.
Hussle, an admitted gang member-turned-activist who tried to use his fame to help better the LA community, was honored during a memorial service at the Staples Center before his procession ‐ in which 21,000 people showed up.

We drove 200 miles and missed Wheel of Fortune for THIS ?
[LA Times] In a sweeping expansion of the criminal charges against Michael Avenatti, a federal grand jury has indicted the Los Angeles lawyer on 36 counts of fraud, perjury, failure to pay taxes, embezzlement and other financial crimes.
Avenatti stole millions of dollars from five clients and used a tangled web of shell companies and bank accounts to cover up the theft, the Santa Ana grand jury alleged in an indictment that prosecutors made public Thursday.
One of the clients, Geoffrey Ernest Johnson, was a mentally ill paraplegic on disability who won a $4-million settlement of a suit against Los Angeles County. The money was wired to Avenatti in January 2015, but he hid it from Johnson for years, according to the indictment. "Yer honor, he wouldn't sign for it. I'm innocent!"
In 2017, Avenatti received $2.75 million in proceeds from another client’s legal settlement, but concealed that too, the indictment says. The next day, he put $2.5 million of that money into the purchase of a private jet for Passport 420, LLC, a company he effectively owned, according to prosecutors.
At the time, Avenatti and his businesses owed millions of dollars in back taxes, the government claimed, and his Newport Beach law firm, Eagan Avenatti, was weeks from bankruptcy.
Federal agents seized the Honda HA-420 jet at Santa Barbara Airport on Wednesday under a court-approved warrant that remains under seal, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles.

With credentials like that, he'd be the perfect Dem presidential candidate.

One of the talking heads on TV this a.m. said that Assange had published the names and addresses of ICE agents. I don't know whether that's true or not but it is noted that Assange's name did not appear on ICE's most wanted list.

Great for batch cocktails or a summer sip, the margarita is versatile, delicious, and multi-seasonal. The history of the margarita is an ambiguous one, with origin stories based in old Hollywood favorites like Rita Hayworth (whose real name was Margarita Cansino) and Peggy Lee. Another folktale imagines Texas socialite Margaret Sames (hence "margarita") stirring up the beverage for friends in 1940's Acapulco. Whatever the legend, the margarita has been embossed in the cocktail hall of fame since, and has been the choice drink of such celebs as Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel, and Beatnik Jack Kerouac.

Nobody uses Cointreau, it's too expensive. Triple sec. I tried this kind of receipe and my family coughed and said it was way too strong. It's mostly alcohol.

My wife uses Cointreau. AND Grand Marnier. And a medium grade tequila. The hardest part is the mixer (splat is right - the recipe is too strong) - had a good one but it got discontinued. Tried several without success. Jose Cuervo mixer is ok, though not great. Crushed ice. Salted rim optional.

I use Cointreau. But, if you really want expensive, try Del Maguey's Chichicapa meszal, if you can even find it. Can't be beat. Another neat trick is to substitute Tanqueray for Mexican agave products.

In ascending order of sweetness: triple sec, Curaçao, Cointreau, Grand Marnier. I prefer to keep the sweetness down. Also, no reposado or anejo. I like the rawer flavor of blanco. The lime juice and ice dilute the alcohol.
[BREITBART] Parenting magazine Baby & Family has told readers to beware of families who are "inconspicuous" and "cheerful", as these warning signs indicate they are right wing and thus "dangerous".
Depicted with illustrations featuring solely blonde women and kiddies, the report says ordinary parents must take action against right-wing families and make clear that their ideology has no place in the world.
Asserting that the term "right wing" "stirs up anxiety" and brings to mind "burning refugee homes", skinheads, and the National Socialist Underground (NSU) group who carried out a string of violent attacks on foreign people, Baby & Family notes that people "rarely connect it with women, family and children".
This, the high-circulation German magazine declares, "is precisely the great risk" as such people are just as dangerous if not more so as gangs of Nazi skinheads. The identifying features of right-wing families, it contends, are that they are "inconspicuous, blond, cute and engaged".
"First of all, [right-wing families] are nice and dedicated" Michaela Köttig, sociologist and researcher of right-wing extremism at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, alleges.
Researcher of right-wing politics, Eva Prausner, says a huge danger of right-wing families is that they seem normal.
Because of this, she says many parents will already have established good relations with them to the point that they "are no longer marginalised and at worst, get support".
While there are different types of right-wing families, Baby & Family asserts that daycare centres should always seek help when dealing with them.
"The right has many forms. The definition of what is extreme and what is not is difficult", it says, but asserts that all manifestations must be dealt with because right wingers could spread their views when meeting with other parents in the playground.
Heike Radvan of the controversial Amadeu Antonio Foundation warns that "children of right-wing parents are not necessarily different from other children", but says they are often "very obedient" and might not talk much.
Despite asserting that such children are not outspoken, the "experts" wheeled out by the magazine warn that a sinister aspect of right-wing parenting is that they instil self-confidence in their progeny.
They do this, Prausner posits, in hope that "their offspring will later confidently carry their ideology into the world".

[SFChronicle] For one week, high-capacity ammunition magazines were legal in California. Hundreds of thousands may have been sold.
A ban on the sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds has been a linchpin of California’s efforts to prevent mass shootings for nearly two decades.
But in the span of a single week after a federal judge temporarily set aside the prohibition, hundreds of thousands of the devices, if not millions, made their way into the hands of state residents, industry leaders say.
The run on high-capacity magazines from March 29 to April 5 — so fervid that online traffic from gun enthusiasts around the state crashed at least one retail website — was hailed as “Freedom Week” by the California Rifle and Pistol Association and criticized as an alarming safety breach by gun-control advocates.
The ruling in San Diego by Judge Roger Benitez, who said the sales ban on the magazines violated the Second Amendment, was stayed last week pending a challenge to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. But not before it triggered a celebratory frenzy as dealers courted customers in California, many offering discounts amid a mass shift of inventory to the Golden State.
California’s ban took effect in 2000, making it illegal to buy or sell magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds. Another law, Proposition 63 — sponsored by then-Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and approved by the voters in 2016 — would require anyone who owns the magazines to get rid of them.
But the NRA has tied up the measure in court, winning another favorable ruling from Judge Benitez. That means that if someone purchased a high-capacity magazine during the recent brief window, they not only can keep it but use it at a California gun range.
State residents have in the past two decades found other ways to get ahold of the magazines. According to police, California residents have been known to purchase the devices in Nevada and drive them back over the border. Magazines don’t carry serial numbers, so tracking them is nearly impossible.

I'm glad the Chinese have finally gotten around to hurting the things valued by the ecowarriors who made them lords of all creation and manufacturing.
[France24] The Central African Republic's ministry of mines and geology suspended four Chinese mining companies operating in Bozoum on March 25 for failing to protect the environment. Our Observer, Father Aurelio Gazzera, a missionary in Bozoum, says the affected areas include sections of the Ouham River. Gazzera sent The Observers photos of the river's deteriorating condition, which he says is the result of one company's hunt for gold.

I have little doubt that the Chinese are capable of ignoring all environmental issues and strip mining whatever concessions they paid for. At the same time, it's also the case that Third World countries in general, and African countries specifically, are known for temporarily loosening their byzantine regulations (tailor-made to creat opportunities for graft) to entice foreign investment and then tightening up those regulations once the investment has been made. That's why they're such basket cases. No one trusts them to abide by written agreements, meaning foreign investors are as scarce as hen's teeth.
[DEFENCE-BLOG] Russian officials publicly threaten Ukraine with "military conflict", according to TASS.
Russia’s Federation Council on Wednesday approved a statement saying that violations of the rules of navigation by Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait are fraught with a military conflict with Russia in which NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all.... may be involved.
The Federation Council’s statement about NATO’s destructive policies being implemented since the alliance’s creation in 1949 was timed for the organization’s 70th anniversary.
"The passing of Ukrainian ships through the Kerch Strait is not a question of the balance of force or of NATO’s presence in the Black Sea region. It is exclusively a problem of Ukraine’s compliance with the established procedures that are well-known to it and had been successfully used by it up to November 2018. Ukraine’s attempts to bypass these procedures are fraught with the risk of a military conflict between Ukraine and Russia in which NATO may be involved," the Federation Council said.
The senators pointed out that after stepping up activity in the previously calm Baltic Region NATO was now building up military presence in the Black Sea region. "NATO’s support for Georgia during the tragic events in August 2008 and now for Ukraine, in particular, on November 25, 2018 when Ukrainian naval ships illegally crossed the state border of Russia in the Kerch Strait area incites the leaders of these two countries, certain about their impunity, to carry out more adventures," the statement runs.

[ASIA.NIKKEI] North Korea likely received far more petroleum in 2018 than allowed under United Nations ...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships... sanctions, with Russia and China appearing to look the other way on illicit transfers of oil at sea.
Pyongyang was permitted to import 500,000 barrels of oil, but apparently exceeded that amount through smuggling alone, Nikkei has learned, based on a recent internal report by an expert panel under the U.N. Security Council's North Korea sanctions committee. The report adds to a series of documents noting such activities.
The U.N. report cited 148 instances of ship-to-ship oil transfers involving North Korea from January to August. Even if the ships carried just one-third of their capacity, the report said, Pyongyang would have obtained the equivalent of 830,000 barrels of oil from those activities alone. The import cap was imposed in December 2017 in response to the North's testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Moscow and Beijing have made no secret of their wish for an easing of sanctions on Pyongyang. With the second summit between U.S. President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... and North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un ...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished... set to begin Wednesday, fears are building that warmer ties between the two nations could accelerate the quiet breaking of sanctions.

[DAILYNK] Three Ministry of State Security (MSS) agents defected from North Korea while in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, following the breakdown in negotiations between the US and North Korea in Hanoi. North Korean authorities are harshly reasserting control over North Korean officials and business people in China in response.
"There are a lot more North Koreans in China defecting than usual," said a source close to North Korean affairs located in China. "The authorities are responding by heightening their monitoring of North Koreans in China."
The source also added that North Korean authorities are conducting harsh levels of control over North Korean officials working in China’s major cities like Shenyang ‐ where the recent defection incident took place ‐ Beijing, Yanji, and Dandong.
"High-level officials that manage North Korean officials in China are receiving reports about where their underlings are and who they are meeting," said the source. "Officials in China are required to call their managers at specific times and confirm that they are working where they should be."
The source also reported that some managers are requiring not only that officials report their whereabouts. They also conduct "two-step" verification of their whereabouts by calling their underlings’ families. Managers are conducting harsh levels of monitoring of their employees because they know that the responsibility for any defection that occurs within their ranks will come back to them.

[Jpost] A Washington state man was charged with two felonies for posting plans on Facebook to commit a mass shooting against Jewish targets and selfies of Nazi salutes.
Dakota Reed, 20, was jugged Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un! in December, weeks after the Anti-Defamation League tipped off the FBI about social media posts threatening to kill Jews praying in a synagogue or kids in school, the Washington-based Herald.net reported. He was not charged with a hate crime.
Reed appears to have kept up seven separate Facebook accounts under variations of the same name for his hateful messages.
"I’m shooting for 30 Jews," read a post from Nov. 11. "No pun needed. Long ways away anyways. See you Goys."
More than a week later he posted to the same account: "We can’t vote away what our fathers tried to, we must spill blood."
Reed also claimed to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan and said he wanted to emulate Dylan Roof, the white supremacist who killed nine worshippers in a South Carolina church in 2015.
Using a cartoon, he illustrated in another post that he needed guns to kill (((rats))). The echo symbol is a reference to Jews.
Reed has been out of jail on $50,000 bond since December.
Snohomish County prosecutors charged him last week with two counts of threats to bomb or injure property. A hate crime charge can be added.

Quoting locals, the official said, the suspect, Ghulam Murtaza, holding a knife in one hand proposed to her again, saying that she must fulfil her promise she made to him.
As she told him about her parents’ wish to marry her off to another man, the suspect attacked and injured her seriously. Locals immediately overpowered the suspect and handed him over to police after giving him a thrashing.

[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday declared that the two sisters from Ghotki were not forcibly converted from Hinduism to Islam, and permitted them to live with their spouses.
The sisters and their spouses had petitioned the IHC on March 25 against alleged harassment by police days after their father and brother, in videos circulating on social media last month, alleged that the two sisters were underage, had been kidnapped, forced into changing their religion, and then married off to Moslem men.
However, corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds... a separate video of the 'minor' girls had also made the rounds in which they said that they accepted Islam of their own free will.
IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah had constituted a five-member commission to probe whether the conversion of the Hindu sisters to Islam was forced or otherwise. During an earlier hearing, the court had also ordered that the two be shifted to a shelter home in Islamabad.
The commission comprising Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari, prominent Moslem scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani, Human Rights Commission of Pakistain Chairperson Dr Mehdi Hasan, National Commission on the Status of Women Chairperson Khawar Mumtaz and veteran journalist and human rights ...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty... activist I.A. Rehman had probed the matter and concluded that it was not a forced conversion.
I.A. Rehman pointed out in court that "there is no law in Pakistain against forced conversions" and sought a court decree in this regard.
The secretary interior, Azam SLearned Elders of Islamn, apprised the IHC about the findings of the commission, and told the court that as per the commission's opinion, it was a facilitated conversion.
I.A. Rehman pointed out in court that "there is no law in Pakistain against forced conversions" and sought a court decree in this regard.
Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... politician Ramesh Kumar, when invited to the rostrum, wanted the IHC to issue directives to the government for the amendment of laws related to the protection of minorities.
Justice Minallah expressed displeasure, saying that he feels embarrassed when parliamentarians express helplessness to legislate. He remarked that the case of the Ghotki sisters was a simple one and would have been decided in a day or so, but a commission comprising eminent professionals and scholars had been constituted keeping in view the sensitivity of the case since "the court wanted to ensure this was not a forced conversion".
Interior secretary SLearned Elders of Islamn also told the court that a medical board constituted to ascertain the age of the sister had concluded that they are adults aged 18 and 19 years.
Earlier, a medical report prepared by the Pakistain Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) had also stated that Asia (formerly Raveena) is 19-years-old and Nadia (formerly Reena) is 18-years-old.
The commission in its report pointed out that there is an unregulated facilitation centre for religious conversions and recommended that it be regulated.
Justice Minallah observed that the court's ruling today would not affect any proceeding litigation pending against the spouses of the sisters in any other court.
Regarding the issue of forced conversions, the court sought the commission's recommendations within four weeks and adjourned the case until May 14.

[NASA] NASA has selected SpaceX in Hawthorne, California, to provide launch services for the agency’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, the first-ever mission to demonstrate the capability to deflect an asteroid by colliding a spacecraft with it at high speed – a technique known as a kinetic impactor.
The total cost for NASA to launch DART is approximately $69 million, which includes the launch service and other mission related costs.
This sounds a lot like the Billion $++ mission SLS was supposed to do at one time.... ah... I guess being ready on time and a $69 million cost cuts some reluctance ..
The DART mission currently is targeted to launch in June 2021 on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. By using solar electric propulsion, DART will intercept the asteroid Didymos’ small moon in October 2022, when the asteroid will be within 11 million kilometers of Earth.
NASA’s Launch Services Program at Kennedy Space Center in Florida will manage the SpaceX launch service. The DART Project office is located at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, and is managed by the Planetary Missions Program Office at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office in Washington.
