[Guns America Digest] Depending upon your political leanings, Ernesto "Che" Guevara was a hero, saint, murderer, or monster. Guevara was one of the most polarizing people in all of human history. His life, death, and legacy still spark controversy more than half a century after his execution.
The eldest of five children, Guevara was born in Rosario, Argentina, in 1928. As a child, Guevara suffered from crippling asthma yet still managed to excel as an athlete. He competed in rugby, golf, shooting, and cycling and was an accomplished chess player.
His childhood home contained more than 3,000 books and Guevara read widely. He was known to quote both Kipling and Jose Hernandez extensively. Eclectic authors such as Aristotle, Freud, Faulkner, Bertrand Russell, Sartre, Verne, Kafka, Camus, and Jack London occupied his mind during his formative years.

But most people probably recognize him for the distinctive black-and-gold Pharaoh headdress he often wears around town to express his passion for ancient Egypt.
In other words, he’s been wearing it long before a 23andMe letter arrived in January analyzing his DNA ‐ a letter that would move him to tears and confirm his many years of work.
"You share an ancient paternal lineage with Pharaoh Ramesses III," it read. "You and Ramesses III share an ancient paternal-line ancestor who probably lived in north Africa or western Asia."
Ross was ecstatic.
"When I first read it, I was so happy, and I was just so glad," he said. "Then I thought, ’No wonder I’m re-enacting and doing certain things that’s sort of unexplainable. It’s all part of the gene!’"

this is about as weak as the Elizabeth Warren linkage to some south American who lived in the 1600s
almost everyone who reads Rantburg has some ancestor who lived in north Africa or western Asia and whose descendants include both Ramses III and millions of his servants, slaves and functionaries

Ramesses III probably fathered a whole lot of children, doesn't mean that Mr. Ross has any claim on Egypt's throne.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of North Maluku province in eastern Indonesia Sunday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake was 150 kilometers (92 miles) northwest of the coastal town of Ternate at a depth of 37 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
The quake was felt in Ternate but residents were unconcerned, a local said.
"I was watching TV when the earthquake suddenly happened, the jolt was quite strong but thankfully it was quick so there was no panic," Ternate resident Budi Nurgianto told AFP.
Officials are still assessing the quake’s impact but there were no immediate reports of casualties.
"We are still checking to see if there’s any damage," said Rahmat Triyono, head of Indonesian weather agency BKMG's earthquake and tsunami division.
Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.

[IMAGES.DAWN] Barbra Streisand apologised Saturday for her remarks about Michael Jackson and two men who have accused him of sexual abuse, saying that she should have chosen her words more carefully and that she admires the accusers for "speaking their truth." "Slap me again, please!"
Streisand had received bitter criticism online after she was quoted in The Times of London as saying that Jackson’s accusers were "thrilled to be there" during the alleged abuse, which "didn’t kill them." Rape, even statutory we are assured, is the single absolute worst thing that can happen to a woman. It's just a part of growing up for eleven year old boys.
After an initial statement Saturday to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named in which she sought to clarify her remarks, the superstar of song, stage and screen posted an apology online that went further. They were thrilled to be there, it didn't kill them. How much clearer can you get?
"I am profoundly sorry for any pain or misunderstanding I caused by not choosing my words more carefully about Michael Jackson and his victims," she wrote. "Papa, can you hear me?" Trying walking back: “His sexual needs were his sexual needs, coming from whatever childhood he has or whatever DNA he has. You can say ‘molested,’ but those children, as you heard say, they were thrilled to be there. They both married and they both have children, so it didn’t kill them.” Fail

[Telegraph] A Yorkshire pub rumoured to have hosted Oliver Cromwell's soldiers the night before a famous 17th-century battle is at the centre of a new fight over plans to turn it into a "trendy wine bar".
Conservationists claim plans for a major refurbishment of the 600-year-old Black Bull in the West Yorkshire market town of Otley are "corporate vandalism" and will destroy its historic character.
The Grade II-listed watering hole, with its low oak beams, flagstone floor and log fire, is one of the oldest in the country and featured in the Hairy Bikers' Pubs that Built Britain series. The Kay Mellor TV drama The Chase was filmed there in 2006.
It is also close to the site of the Battle of Marston Moor where, during the English Civil War in 1644, the Royalist army of Charles I was effectively destroyed as a fighting force by the Parliamentarians' New Model Army.
The evening battle only lasted around two hours but in that short time around 4,000 men were killed and 1,500 taken prisoner. The victory boosted the reputation of Cromwell, who commanded the cavalry under Sir Thomas Fairfax.
[AlAhram] A cargo plane bearing the Russian flag was spotted by AFP at the main airport in Venezuela Sunday amid reports that Moscow has dispatched troops and a senior military official to the country.
The aircraft was seen at Maiquetia airport outside Caracas guarded by a contingent of Venezuelan National Guardsmen.
Javier Mayorca, an independent journalist, reported on his twitter account the arrival of two Russian panes -- an Antonov-124 cargo plane and a smaller jet -- late Saturday at the airport.
He said around 100 Russian soldiers led by General Vasily Tonkoshkurov, head of the Mobilization Directorate of Russia's armed forces, disembarked along with about 35 tons of equipment.
A picture of a Russian flagged aircraft posted on social media showed men in uniform clustered around it on the tarmac.
There was no confirmation from Venezuelan authorities, and the Russian embassy in Caracas declined to comment to AFP on the report, which was widely carried by Venezuelan media.
Russia and China are the main allies of Venezuela. Both have lent billions of dollars to the oil-rich South American country, propping up the anti-US government of President Nicolas Maduro Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy... Russia has also vocally opposed US moves to sanction Maduro and his government, and to recognize opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.
US moves against Caracas have ratcheted up in recent weeks, with President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... warning "all options" -- implicitly including US military intervention -- were being considered.
On April 28, US sanctions are to jump up a level with a ban on crude imports from Venezuela. America is historically Venezuela's biggest oil buyer, and that step is expected to severely crimp the Maduro government's already diminished finances.
Russia has previously signalled its support for Maduro by sending two TU-160 bombers to Venezuela last December to take part in a military exercise.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances... has a record of ordering his military -- or paramilitary -- forces into several theaters to challenge US strategies, notably in Syria and Ukraine.
However, by candlelight every wench is handsome... any Russian foothold in Latin America, especially Venezuela, would alarm the US military. It would also be a political test for Trump, who has routinely avoided criticizing Putin.
[ELUNIVERSAL] In response to this request, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, expressed his repudiation and urged the international community to take "more forceful" actions in this regard.

[Bloomberg] China protested the latest transit through the Taiwan Strait by American warships, warning the U.S. not to undermine relations between the two countries.
"China has been closely monitoring from start to end the passage by the U.S. warships through the Taiwan Strait," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a regular news briefing in Beijing on Monday. "China has lodged stern representations with the U.S."
Two U.S. vessels entered Taiwanese waters off the island’s southwest coast heading north on Sunday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said in a statement Monday. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the patrol, identified the vessels as the Navy destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur and the Coast Guard cutter Bertholf.
The patrol comes days before a scheduled visit to Beijing by U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, as talks on a trade agreement continue between the world’s two largest economies. Chinese Vice Premier Liu He is set to lead a delegation to Washington starting on April 3.

The U.S. has over the past year increased its naval transits through the 180-kilometer (110 mile) wide strait that separates Taiwan from the Chinese mainland. Sail-bys in January and February also drew protests from China, which considers the island a province.
On Monday, China urged the U.S. to avoid undermining ties between the world’s two biggest economies and support peace and stability in the strait, Geng said.

[DW] A report found that the Reimann family, owners of Krispy Kreme and Dr. Pepper, were avowed Nazis and used forced laborers in their factories during World War II. "These crimes are disgusting," a family spokesman said.
One of Germany's richest families has said they will donate $11 million (€11.3 million) to charity after learning the extent of their family's ties to the Nazi regime, according to a report by the mass-circulation Bild am Sonntag newspaper.
The Reimann family's JAB Holding Company owns a controlling interest in several major brands, including Panera Bread and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts among others.

Not sure about Krispy Kreme, but Dr. Pepper originated before the Nazis (from Wikipedia)-
was created in the 1880s by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas and first served around 1885. Dr Pepper was first nationally marketed in the United States in 1904, and is now also sold in Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Australia, as well as New Zealand and South Africa.

[Radio Free Europe] NATO has confirmed that it plans to establish a storage facility in Poland for U.S. military equipment, including armored vehicles, ammunition, and weapons to arm a full brigade.
A NATO official on March 23 told AFP that a report earlier by The Wall Street Journal that said the $260 million facility would be located in Powidz, some 200 kilometers west of Warsaw, was accurate.
The WSJ quoted NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg as saying work on the site will begin this summer and take two years to complete.
Since Russia’s annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014, Poland, the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia as well as other Eastern European states have expressed concerns about their security.
The United States has deployed and rotated troops in the region since the Ukraine crisis began in an effort to deter Russia. NATO has also increased its presence near Russia’s borders.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A flash mob gathering in central Frankfurt descended into chaos with teenagers hurling stones at coppers, German authorities said Sunday.
A group of 600 youths had gathered on Saturday evening at the popular shopping street Zeil which they began running through "without any consideration for pedestrians," police said in a statement.
Police then issued the flash mob organizer with a dispersal notice, but an officer was then suddenly punched in the face by a 17-year-old youth.
As officers detained the teen, some among the crowd began throwing stones at police.
Three officers were hit, with one suffering light injuries. The other two were unscathed.
The gathering was finally cleared two hours after it began.
Investigations were now ongoing on the background of the flash mob, police said.
Authorities were also examining if organizers could be liable to take on the costs of the ensuing police operation.
The flash mob chaos in Frankfurt came just days after a mass brawl in central Berlin between followers of two social media stars.
Nine arrests were made as a fight broke out on the Alexanderplatz late Thursday among 400 backers of two rival YouTubers.
Police said it took around 100 officers, two of whom were maimed, to break up the fight.

[DAWN] Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry and India's Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj exchanged words on Twitter on Sunday after the latter shared that she had asked the Indian high commissioner in Pakistain to give her a report on the alleged abduction and forced conversion of two teenage sisters from Ghotki.
Chaudhry, responding to Swaraj, said that this was Pakistain's internal matter and he hoped the Indian government would "act with same diligence when it comes to rights of Indian minorities".
"It is Pakistain's internal issue and rest assure[d], it's not Modi’s India where minorities are subjugated," he added. [DAWN] A woman who had been tied with chains for several weeks and allegedly tortured by her husband was rescued by police in Sahiwal on Sunday.
According to initial reports by police, the man had chained his wife up "on the pretext of her being possessed by demons" and would regularly beat her up brutally.
Police said the suspect had allegedly kept his wife locked up at their residence in the Sheeran Wali Gali neighbourhood for at least 20 days. Police were alerted by neighbourhood residents and a team from Ghalla Mandi cop shoppe was dispatched to recover the woman.
TV footage showed the woman sitting on the floor of a room handcuffed and with her shackled feet connected to a wall with a chain.
"My husband and in-laws used to tie me up and beat me," the woman told police after her rescue. Very Islamic™
Police tossed in the slammer Please don't kill me! the suspect and started the paperwork but haven't done much else against him under Section 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the Pakistain Penal Code in the evening.
According to initial reports by police, the man had chained his wife up "on the pretext of her being possessed by demons" and would regularly beat her up brutally. He had also taken their two children away from her, including a breastfed baby.
Police initially suggested that the woman was of an unsound mind and had previously attempted suicide, however, the woman refuted this impression in her statement.
The rescued woman is currently in police custody.
Investigation officer Afzal Gill told DawnNewsTV that the woman will be presented in the court of a magistrate tomorrow who will determine whether she requires mental healthcare.
Her children presently live with her husband's family. Police have also arrested the suspect's brother.

[DARPA] DARPA is seeking information on state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies for advanced mapping and surveying in support of the agency’s Subterranean (SubT) Challenge. Georeferenced data ‐ geographic coordinates tied to a map or image ‐ could significantly improve the speed and accuracy of warfighters in time-sensitive active combat operations and disaster-related missions in the subterranean domain. Today, the majority of the underground environments are uncharted or inadequately mapped, including human-made tunnels, underground infrastructure, and natural cave networks.
Through the Request for Information, DARPA is looking for innovative technologies to collect highly accurate and reproducible ground-truth data for subterranean environments, which would potentially disrupt and positively leverage the subterranean domain without prohibitive cost and with less risk to human lives. These innovative technologies will allow for exploring and exploiting these dark and dirty environments that are too dangerous to deploy humans.
"What makes subterranean areas challenging for precision mapping and surveying ‐ such as lack of GPS, constrained passages, dark or dust-filled air ‐ is similar to what inhibits safe and speedy underground operations for our warfighters," said Timothy Chung, program manager in DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office (TTO). "Building an accurate three-dimensional picture is a key enabler to rapidly and remotely exploring and searching subterranean spaces."
DARPA is looking for commercial products, software, and services available to enable high-fidelity, 3D mapping and surveying of underground environments. Of interest are available technologies that offer high accuracy and high resolution, with the ability to provide precise and reproducible survey points without reliance on substantial infrastructure (e.g., access to global fixes underground). Additionally, relevant software should also allow for generated data products to be easily manipulated, annotated, and rendered into 3D mesh objects for importing into simulation and game engine environments.
DARPA may select proposers to demonstrate their technologies or methods to determine feasibility of capabilities for potential use in the SubT Challenge in generating and sharing 3D datasets of underground environments.
Such accurately georeferenced data may aid in scoring the SubT competitors’ performance in identifying and reporting the location of artifacts placed within the course. In addition, renderings from these data may provide DARPA with additional visualization assets to showcase competition activities in real-time and/or post-production.
