[US.CNN] The terrorist behind the 2000 attack on the USS Cole is believed to have been killed in a US Arclight airstrike in Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic... on Tuesday, according to a US administration official.
was an al Qaeda operative who the US believes helped orchestrate the October 12, 2000, attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors.
The official said all intelligence indicators show al-Badawi was killed in a strike in Yemen as a result of a joint US military and intelligence operation.
US officials told CNN that the strike took place in Yemen's Ma'rib Governorate.
While US Central Command, which oversees military operations in the region, later confirmed that al-Badawi was targeted in a strike, a front man said the US was still assessing the results.
"US forces conducted a precision strike Jan. 1st in the Marib governate ...the site of what is believed to be the biblical kingdom of Sheba... , Yemen, targeting Jamal al-Badawi, a legacy al Qaeda operative in Yemen involved in the USS Cole bombing," US Navy Capt. Bill Urban, a front man for Central Command, told CNN in a statement.
"US forces are still assessing the results of the strike following a deliberate process to confirm his death," he added.
The administration official said that al-Badawi was struck while driving alone in a vehicle and that the US assessed there was not any collateral damage.

The firefighters locked themselves in the vehicle and called the police who arrived armed with submachine guns along with an ambulance that took the stabbing victim to a nearby hospital.

[AlAhram] Ottoman Turkish police on Friday launched nationwide raids to detain nearly 150 people, including military personnel, suspected of ties to the group blamed for the 2016 attempted coup, local media reported.
Prosecutors in Istanbul, Konya and Ankara issued arrest warrants for 137 people as part of different investigations into followers of US-based Moslem preacher Fethullah Gülen ... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world... , state news agency Anadolu and NTV broadcaster reported.

It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey... on July 15, 2016 -- a charge he vehemently denies.
The raids were spread across more than 30 provinces including Ankara where the public prosecutor issued detention warrants for 35 non-commissioned officers in the navy including 10 still in active duty.
Tens of thousands of people have been locked away ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... over alleged links to Gulen since 2016 while over 100,000 have been sacked or suspended from the public sector.

Ottoman Turkish officials stress that the operations are necessary to remove the "virus" caused by the Gulen movement's infiltration of key Ottoman Turkish institutions.

[PRESSTV] Authorities in Iraq say at least six people have bit the dust when a massive fire swept through a recovery center for women and kiddies in the capital Baghdad.
A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... , told Iraq’s Arabic-language al-Sumaria television network that the fire broke out after a riot started at the center in Baghdad’s northwestern neighborhood of al-Adhamiyah on Friday morning.
The source added that the recovery center was run under the aegis of the Iraqi Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. It housed children on the first floor and women on the second.
On May 26, 2018, officials in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region said seven inmates had died of asphyxia in a fire started as part of a prison riot.
They said in a statement that another 12 inmates were being treated for smoke inhalation.
The riot began when a convict sentenced to death on terrorism-related charges assaulted one of the prison guards.
He and other inmates then tried to control the facility, but were unsuccessful.

[IsraelTimes] PA official and staffers at Paleostinian Broadcasting Corporation point finger at Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, over Friday break-in, during which several workers were also assaulted.
[IsraelTimes] Some 10,000 join weekly demonstration, burning tires and hurling rocks and bombs at IDF soldiers
Some 10,000 Paleostinians took part in violent protests along the Gazoo border on Friday, burning tires and hurling rocks and bombs at IDF soldiers.
The army said it foiled two attempts to breach the border fence and was responding to the demonstrators with tear gas and live fire in accordance with rules of engagement.
Photos showed several youths trying to climb over the fence.
The Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,-run health ministry in Gazoo said 15 protesters were maimed by live fire in festivities with Israeli security forces along the border. It also said five medics were hurt, all hit by gas canisters.
The ministry "condemns the Israeli occupation forces’ violations against medical personnel," it said in a statement that cam days after a New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize... report into the killing of a female Paleostinian medic in June.
The report found that IDF troops likely fired into a group of protesters and medical personnel who posed no threat to them.
The IDF said the army’s internal investigations body was "probing to clarify the reasons behind the death of Razan al-Najjar. The results of the investigation will be sent to the military advocate general upon their completion."
Friday’s protests were held at various locations along the border under the banner of Hamas’s ongoing "March of Return" demonstrations.
[Dhaka Tribune] Buddhist Rakhine fighters killed seven Myanmar security forces in attacks on four police posts in Myanmar's troubled Rakhine state on Friday as the country marked Independence Day, spokesmen for the military and the gang said.
The western state has been torn by violence once again since early December, when fighting intensified between government forces and the Arakan Army, which wants more autonomy for the Buddhist Rakhine ethnic minority.
Rakhine was where a brutal military-led crackdown in 2017 drove hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Moslems into bordering Bangladesh.
The recent fighting with the Arakan Army had forced 2,500 civilians to flee their homes by the end of last year, according to the United Nations ...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense... Arakan Army front man Khine Thu Kha told Rooters the group attacked four police posts and later retrieved the corpses of seven "enemies."
The group also detained 12 Myanmar security force members, he said. "We will process them according to international law. We will not harm them," he said.
The attacks were a response to a Myanmar military offensive against the Arakan Army in recent weeks that had also targeted civilians, he said.
The Myanmar military last month announced a four-month halt in fighting in the north and northeast of the country to kick-start peace talks with multiple gangs fighting for ethnic autonomy, but that announcement excluded Rakhine.
Myanmar state media earlier reported an attack by the same group on Tuesday that seriously injured one coppers.

[PRESSTV] Nearly a dozen civilians, mostly women and kiddies, have been killed after the US-led coalition purportedly fighting the ISISTakfiri ...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed... terrorist group carried out a series of aerial assaults in Syria’s troubled eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr.
Syria’s state-run television network reported that 10 people were killed on Friday afternoon when US-led warplanes bombarded residential buildings in al-Kishkiyah town of the province’s Abu Kamal district.
The report added that the victims were all members of the same family.
The development came only a few hours after eleven people bit the dust in similar Arclight airstrikes against al-Shaafah town.
The air raids severely damaged private property in the targeted area as well.

[PRESSTV] More than 500 Death Eaters have been killed, many of them summarily executed, after an infighting spread among the ranks of holy warrior groups in Syria's Idlib province, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reports.
The infighting broke out on Tuesday after al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) occupied vast territories held by Ottoman Turkish-backed NFL snuffies in the Aleppo province.
The HTS reportedly initiated the fighting after NFL-affiliated Nour al-Din al-Zenki snuffies killed five of members of the Takfiri ...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed... group.
Clashes have now spread to Idlib and Hama provinces amid reports that other rival holy warrior factions, including the so-called Free Syrian Army ... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund... which is backed by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire.... , are joining the fighting.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), known to be sympathetic to holy warrior groups in Syria, confirmed the report but put the corpse count at around 100.
Al-Mayadeen attributed the high corpse count to ambushes and prisoner executions by the warring sides. It said nearly 20 civilians, including three children, have also been killed in the skirmishes.
Videos have emerged showing some of the rival terrorist groups' casualties and captives.

[IsraelTimes] Islamic republic seeking to counter presence of US aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf by sailing fleet near American waters.
Iran is set to deploy a fleet of warships to the western Atlantic Ocean in the coming months, a naval commander said Friday, in an apparent bid to counter the presence of a US aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf.
Golly. One is reminded of Chinese admiral Zheng He, who was similarly sent sailing abroad with a grand fleet...
Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani told the state-run IRNA news site the flotilla of warships would depart for the Atlantic in March, and the mission would take several months.
"The Atlantic Ocean is a long route, and it is likely that this Iranian mission would take five months to complete," he said.
One does hope, for the sake of their amour propre, that there will be no need to rescue them along the way, given that they are not accustomed to making trans-oceanic voyages.
Hassani said Iran’s newly launched destroyer, the Sahand, will be part of the fleet.
Inshallah.
According to reports in Iranian media, the domestically made vessel is equipped with a helicopter landing pad, surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft batteries and sophisticated radar and radar-evading capabilities.
The 13,000-ton vessel named after a mountain in northern Iran, joined the Islamic republic’s naval fleet in December.
Iran, which has been developing its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and fighter planes as a part of an arms development program initiative since 1992, often boasts of new achievements or acquisitions that cannot be independently verified.
The flotilla announcement is likely intended to boost Iran’s military image amid rising tensions with the United States, which in November re-imposed all sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.
In December, the US deployed an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf, the first since America’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and breaking the longest carrier absence in the volatile region since at least the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
A day after the arrival of the USS John C. Stennis, Iran launched a military drill in the waterway’s strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for nearly a third of all oil traded by sea.
The strait at its narrowest point is 33 kilometers (21 miles) wide, in the waters between Iran and Oman.
Despite being so narrow and within the territorial waters of those two nations, the strait is viewed as an international transit route. American forces routinely travel through the area, despite sometimes tense encounters with the Revolutionary Guard, a paramilitary force answerable only to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate within the country’s Shiite theocracy whose major achievement was the nuclear deal, has repeatedly warned any attempt to stop Iran’s export of crude oil could see it close off the strait.

...Amazing how they keep coming up with this idea every year or two, apparently assuming that we've forgotten the miserable failure of the previous Atlantic mission to work.
