[DAWN] The brother of a top Australian cricketer was charged by police Tuesday for framing a love rival as the author of a hit list that sparked a major counterterrorism investigation.
Arsalan Khawaja, 39 ‐ brother of leading test batsman Usman ‐ is due to appear in court on charges of forgery and attempting to pervert justice.
For months he appears to have convinced Australian police that his 26-year-old university colleague Mohammed Kamer Nizamdeen was embroiled in a plot to kill then prime minister Malcom Turnbull.
The Sri Lankan-born PhD student spent a month in solitary confinement at a remote super-secure prison, where he was questioned about targets, not just including Australia's then leader, but reportedly the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city's iconic Opera House.
Nizamdeen was eventually released in September, when police figured out the script did not match his handwriting. The charges were later dropped.
"What we will be alleging is that he (Nizamdeen) was set up in a planned and calculated manner. Motivated, in part, by a personal grievance," New South Wales assistant commissioner Mick Willing told news hounds.
Willing added that police believe Khawaja orchestrated the set up and may have been motivated by a dispute over a woman.
"We will allege that that is part of the process. But as you can appreciate, the matter is before the court, so we can't go into much detail," said Willing.
Australian police now say they "regret" arresting Nizamdeen.
"In relation to the charging and the subsequent dropping of the charge against the Sri Lankan citizen, we have offered, and have paid his court costs," Willing said.

[DAWN] Ottoman Turkish police on Tuesday detained nearly 140 people in nationwide raids over alleged links to the group blamed for the 2016 failed coup, state media reported.
Prosecutors across the country, including in Istanbul and Ankara, issued 267 arrest warrants, according to state news agency Anadolu, as part of different investigations into followers of US-based Moslem preacher Fethullah Gülen ... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world... Police launched operations in 24 provinces including Izmir and Mugla on the Aegean coast and Ordu and Zonguldak on the Black Sea.
By late Tuesday morning, 137 suspects were tossed into the calaboose including 55 in Istanbul as raids continued to capture others, Anadolu reported.
Ankara accuses Gulen of ordering the attempted overthrow of President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First ... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey... on July 15, 2016, but he strongly denies the claims.
The probes include one led by the Istanbul public prosecutor into the movement ‐ referred to as the "Fethullah Terrorist Organisation" (FETO) ‐ and businesses linked to Gulen. The prosecutor issued 96 detention warrants, Anadolu said.
Meanwhile, ...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake... prosecutors in the Ottoman Turkish capital sought the arrest of 48 individuals over their alleged use of an encrypted messaging application called ByLock, which Ottoman Turkish officials claim was especially created for Gulen supporters.
So far, 35 people including engineers, civil servants and individuals working in the private education sector have been detained in Ankara, the agency reported.
The investigations that led to Tuesday's raids also focused on Gulen followers' presence and actions inside the military.
Some of the suspects wanted were soldiers on active duty or sacked military personnel.
Another 16 suspects were charged by an Istanbul court of "being a member of an armed terrorist organization", Anadolu reported on Tuesday.
Tens of thousands of people have been jugged Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw! over suspected Gulen links since 2016.
Despite criticism from activists and Ankara's Western allies expressing concern over the scale of the crackdown, the raids show no sign of slowing down.
Ottoman Turkish officials insist that the operations are necessary to remove the "virus" that is the Gulen movement's infiltration of key Ottoman Turkish institutions.

[Ynet] A 22-year-old Paleostinian was killed Tuesday during festivities with the IDF in Tulkarm, which erupted following arrests the army carried out there.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) launched a counter-offensive this evening in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor after losing a significant amount of territory in the northern part of Hajin.
According to reports from the Deir Ezzor front, ISIS managed to retake several points inside of Hajin that they lost to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) over the last 24 hours.
However, you can observe a lot just by watching... the extent of their advance is still unknown at this time due to the heavy bombardment of Hajin by the U.S.-led Coalition.
The town of Hajin is believed to be ISIS’s de-facto capital in Syria and Iraq after they lost the cities of Raqqa, djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... (northwest Iraq), Albukamal, and Mayadeen.
For ISIS, conceding Hajin to the Syrian Democratic Forces would be a devastating blow to their self-proclaimed ’caliphate’, as its the largest town under their control in the Middle East.

[ALMASDARNEWS] Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) continued their advance inside the Idlib deescalation zone, today, after launching several attacks against the Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels.
According to opposition activists via social media, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham seized another town from the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front (NLF) after overrunning their positions in northwestern Hama.
The opposition activists claimed that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham captured the small town of Qastoun, following the the withdrawal of the National Liberation Front forces from the area.
As a result of this advance, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham has now captured three towns from the National Liberation Front.
Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham was able to make this advance in the Idlib deescalation zone as the Ottoman Turkish Army watched from their observation post.
The Ottoman Turkish Army has yet to get involved in this rebel infighting; however, there is a good chance that they will be pressured by their Russian partners to intervene and halt the jihadist advance.
