[OpsLens] I worry about writing on topics that are too stupid for words. I’m afraid the ink from my pen or characters from my keyboard will refuse to flow onto the paper or screen, and I won’t be able to communicate to you just how dumb some of this nonsense is for cops these days. Here’s what I mean.
I recently wrote about a police officer who may receive civilian review recommended discipline from his police chief after he tackled an ax-wielding suspect, bringing the incident to a safe conclusion with no one injured‐not even the suspect. His police union named him Officer of the Month for his actions. Whether the chief imposes the recommended discipline isn’t even the point any longer. Now, the point is that discipline against a heroic officer was recommended at all.
I remember reading about a woman who raised stupid to a whole new level when she criticized a police shooting of an armed suspect. She said the police shouldn’t have shot the man because‐get ready...The suspect hadn’t actually pointed the gun at the officer‐yet. Does she know how quickly a person can bring a firearm up and on target? Just point and shoot? No, I’m sure she doesn’t. And, it’s getting even worse for officers.
Now, cops face a new low in civilian investigation standards. Even when a suspect is actively shooting at officers, apparently, they risk discipline if they shoot back.

It would serve them right if every police officer resigned in protest. Let the civilian board go out and face what cops face every day.

[PRESSTV] Fighting between rival tribes that has rocked a southern Libya town for weeks has killed more than 31 people since the beginning of May, a medical source said on Sunday.
Eight of them were killed on the weekend when the violence flared in Sebha, some 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... , the source said, adding that 18 others were maimed in the festivities.
Sebha, where tribal rivalries have frequently spilt over into bloodshed, has been rocked by violence since February.
On Saturday, the rival tribes fought for the control of an ancient hilltop citadel that overlooks Sebha, a region known for its smuggling routes.
The fighting is pitting the Arab Alwad Suleiman tribe against the Tubus, who are repeatedly accused by their detractors of including imported muscle, namely from Chad, in their ranks.
Since the beginning of May more than 31 people have been killed and 121 maimed in the tribal festivities, the medical source said speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... .
The UN mission in Libya UNSMIL has repeatedly expressed concern for the escalation in fighting.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Three Islamic State members have been arrested in Mosul, according to the Iraqi’s military.
A statement by the Security Media Center said on Sunday that Nineveh police troops, in collaboration with civilians, manage to arrest three Islamic State members.
Last week, the Interior Ministry announced arresting ten Islamic State dangerous members who were wanted for judiciary in the eastern and western sides of Mosul. Moreover, Iraqi security forces arrested, earlier in the week, the so-called Islamic State (IS) jailer in Sumer district in Mosul’s eastern side.
The militants were arrested as they should stand trials. They used to work in Islamic State’s so-called vigilantism and security departments, the center added. “The arrests took place in western Mosul.”
Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Two people were killed and injured as an explosive, from the remnants of war against Islamic State, went off, west of Mosul, a security source was quoted saying on Sunday.
Speaking to Alghad Press, the source said, “a bomb, from the remnants of Islamic State war, exploded while an ambulance was passing in Badush, west of Mosul.”
“A medic was killed, while the ambulance driver was seriously wounded,” the source said, adding that “lots of explosives were still there in the region.”

Diyala (Iraqinews.com) ‐ An Iraqi border guard was killed Sunday in a kaboom in Diyala, the latest in a series of terrorist attacks that target Iraqi security forces and citizens on almost a daily basis, a local source was quoted as saying.
"An explosive charge went off early Sunday on the outskirts of Khanaqin city, 100 km northeast of Baqubah, leaving an Iraqi border guard dead," the source told SNG agency.
"Security bodies opened a probe into the incident," according to the source, who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity.
Khanaqin, some 400 km southeast of Erbil, was previously part of Kirkuk province, but it was annexed to Diyala province after the Arabization process launched by late president Saddam Hussein.
It was the only place that recovered quickly from this process after Saddam’s fall in 2003. The city is still part of the disputed areas claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad.

Kirkuk (Iraqinews.com) – Iraqi paramilitary troops killed on Saturday night three Islamic State (IS) militants in an ambush in the oil-rich province of Kirkuk, Baghdad Today news website reported Sunday.
“Troops of the 27th brigade of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) acted on precise intelligence data as they managed to kill three members of the terrorist Islamic State group in an ambush at al-Rashad district in Hawija, west of Kirkuk,” the media service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi said in a statement.
The statement accused the militants of “planning to carry out terrorist attacks against security headquarters in Kirkuk.”
Kirkuk Governor Rakan al-Jubouri announced on Saturday a curfew from midnight until 6 a.m. (0300 GMT) to prevent any ethnic or sectarian tension between its Kurdish, Arab and ethnic Turkmen communities over the parliamentary elections.
He also ordered a manual recount of votes, saying an electronic counting system had produced an “illogical” result.
Kirkuk (Iraqinews.com) – An Iraqi chieftain and one of his sons were killed in a dual bomb attack in Kirkuk governorate, a security source was quoted as saying.
Speaking to Shafaq News, the source said, “Two explosive charges placed on the side of a road in al-Maslakha village, south of Hawija, went off, leaving a chieftain and his son killed and three others injured.”
“Ambulances carried the bodies to the forensic medicine department, while the injured were moved to a nearby hospital for treatment,” according to the source.

[Reuters] GAZA BORDER - Israeli forces killed at least 28 Palestinians along the Gaza border on Monday, health officials said, as demonstrators streamed to the frontier on the day the United States prepared to open its embassy in Jerusalem.
It was the highest Palestinian single-day death toll since a series of protests dubbed the "Great March of Return" began at the border with Israel on March 30 and since a 2014 Gaza war.
The health officials said 900 Palestinians were wounded, about 450 of them by live bullets.
Tens of thousands gathered at the frontier on Monday, some of them approaching Israel’s border fence - a line Israeli leaders vowed Palestinians would not be allowed to breach. Black smoke from tyres set alight by demonstrators rose in the air.

It's too bad the IDF doesn't use flamethrowers. They really are the best weapon for these sorts of things. I bet the protests would be over in less than a day.

How much money does each of the 28 families receive for their son's martyrdom?
More important, where does the money come from? I've said for a long time, track the money to its source and make examples of them. Dry up the money, and this will stop.
As of 13:38 Israel Time:

IDF says they struck 5 Hamas targets near Jabaliya (followed by massive explosion) after Gazans shot at troops from there, 40,000 protestors at 12 or 13 locations along the border, more of them female than previously.
Embassy ceremony completed without incident. Presumably the party has commenced.

[DW] Just one day after suicide bombers hit three churches in the city of Surabaya, a police station has been bombed. Police have said they are still identifying victims.
A motorcycle bomb detonated at a police headquarters in the Indonesian city of Surabaya on Monday. The attack appears to have been a suicide bombing, authorities said.
Only yesterday, Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, was rocked by suicide bomb attacks at three churches, killing 13 people and injuring dozens.
What we know so far:
At 8.50 a.m. a motorcycle bomb exploded at a security checkpoint outside the headquarters, police said.
Two individuals, a man and a woman, were riding the motorcycle at the time of the attack.
"We can confirm there are casualties among our members," a spokesman said.
"So far, we have accounted for seven victims. We are still collecting data,” a separate police spokesman told The Jakarta Post.
Several hours earlier, police killed a suspected Islamist militant in his apartment south of Surabaya, after an explosion there.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more details are available.
[Al Jazeera] At least 13 people were killed and more than 40 maimed in separate suicide kabooms by one family on three churches in Indonesia's second-largest city.
Police said the bombings were carried out by six family members, including two young children, on Sunday in Surabaya, about 800km west of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta. The blasts occurred minutes apart as worshippers headed into the churches for services.
"The father and one of the sons did the attack on the first church, the mother with two young children under the age of 10 committed the second attack. Two younger boys around the age of 16 committed the third attack," Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen, reporting from Surabaya, cited the city's police chief as saying.
"Several more bombs were found in two different churches that didn't explode."
At least seven people plus the six bombers died in the attacks in Surabaya, according to police.
The bombings were the worst to target churches in Indonesia since a series of attacks on Christmas Eve in 2000 killed 15 people and maimed nearly 100.
"This act is barbaric and beyond the limits of humanity, causing victims among members of society, the police and even innocent children," President Joko Widodo said during a visit to the scene.
A spokesperson for the country's intelligence agency said Sunday's bombings were suspected to have been carried out by an ISIS-inspired group, Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).
Abu Bakar Bashir ... Leader of the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council and proprietor of the al-Mukmin madrassah in Ngruki. The spriritual head of Jemaah Islamiya, which he denies exists. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in 2014.
The group has committed smaller attacks over the last few years, but Sunday's was the largest and most coordinated in Indonesia in the last decade.
National police chief Tito Karnavian said the father detonated a boom-mobile, two sons aged 18 and 16 used a cycle of violence for their attack, and the mother and her two daughters wore explosives. He said the family had returned to Indonesia from Syria, where until recently ISIS controlled significant territory.
The wife of one of the victims said the attack took place shortly before the Sunday service was about to start.
"They were about to celebrate mass. My husband was opening doors and welcoming people," she said.
No church services will be allowed because the authorities suspect more attacks could happen.
The bombings come days after prisoners linked to ISIS killed five members of an elite counter-terrorism force during a 36-hour standoff at a high security jail on the outskirts of the capital.

"Three martyrdom attacks killed 11 and maimed at least 41 among church guards and Christians," it says via the Telegram messaging app.
The jihadist group’s toll tallied with that of police following the seemingly coordinated attacks against three churches in the city of Surabaya at around 7:30 a.m. local time.
IS has grabbed credit for several recent attacks in Indonesia, most of them carried out by its affiliate Jamaah Ansharut Daulah.

[Bangkok Post] A leader of Muslim insurgents has surrendered to the Thai military under a government program to bring rebels disillusioned with the separatist movement back into the fold.
Military spokesman Pornchai Buason on Sunday identified the defector as Abdulropha Solae. He said that Mr Abdulropha voluntarily surrendered on Saturday. A number of warrants had been issued for the arrest of Mr Abdulropha under the Criminal Procedures Act.
Mr Pornchai said Mr Abdulropha had been a core leader of an insurgent operations unit, and had acted as a trainer for new recruits. Under stringent enforcement of the law, he continued, Mr Abdulropha had been unable to lead a normal life with his family during the past eight years. He had been on the run, hiding from the authorities and unable to be there for his family.
Mr Pornchai said that confident in the government's program to welcome home people disillusioned with the insurgency movement, the insurgent decided to surrender and return to a peaceful life in accordance with the law.

The attacks -- the first on Iranian soil to be claimed by IS -- targeted parliament and the shrine of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, killing 17 people and injuring dozens.
"The eight defendants have been found guilty of rebellion," the president of the court said, quoted by Mizan Online.
The trial began on April 28 and those convicted can appeal against the verdict.
Five perpetrators died during the attacks on June 7 last year.
Some of those convicted were found guilty of helping the attackers.
The judiciary's press agency reported after an initial hearing in late April that 26 people were on trial following arrests after the attacks.
Some of the accused had joined IS abroad before coming back to Iran to carry out the attacks, Mizan Online said.
Iran has provided military support to the Syrian and Iraqi governments in the fight against IS, sending military advisers and Iranian and Afghan "volunteers" to the two countries.
