[AnNahar] German and Turkish police on Wednesday announced major coordinated raids against a criminal trafficking network that used unseaworthy ships to send more than 1,700 refugees to Europe.
Out of 1.1 million known to have arrived in Germany, and however many wended their way to the rest of Europe. Golly.
The joint operation was a major strike against international organized crime fueling the record migrant wave to Europe, police chiefs from both countries told a presser at Potsdam outside Berlin.
Nearly 500 German coppers and commandos incarcerated Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try! five suspects in 17 pre-dawn raids across six German states, said federal police chief Dieter Romann.
Any chance they'll use similar numbers to evict those whose asylem applications were rejected without following up to ensure they actually left?
Similar raids took place in Turkish cities including Istanbul, Ankara and Mersin, where 30 arrests were made, Turkish national police chief Mehmet Lekesiz told the joint presser.
He added that Turkish police had also "rescued hundreds of innocent Syrian people fleeing civil war from the exploitation of a cruel gang".
The human traffickers allegedly bought three old and decrepit cargo ships in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... , loaded each with hundreds of paying migrants and sent the vessels on autopilot toward the Italian coast.
Police labeled the vessels "ghosts ships" as they crossed the sea without captains steering them.
Taking up to $6,000 (5,500 euros) from each of the more than 1,700 people, the traffickers acted "not out of an altruistic desire to aid escapes but simply to make money," said Romann.
Would it have been better had they done the exact same thing out of the goodness of their hearts?
"Anyone who crams over 1,700 people into the hulls of decrepit and dilapidated cargo ships, then sets the autopilot for the Italian coast, is consigning human beings to their fate and tacitly accepting their deaths in case (the boat) capsizes," he said.
The three dangerous voyages across the Mediterranean allegedly netted the traffickers an estimated $9.5 million, the police chiefs said.
For Germany, struggling with a record influx of 1.1 million asylum seekers last year, battling human traffickers is a key priority, along with securing the EU's external borders and ensuring a fairer distribution of refugees throughout the bloc.
Berlin has also suggested the EU do more to help Turkey accommodate millions of Syrian refugees in return for cooperation from Ankara to secure its land and sea borders with the 28-member bloc.

[AnNahar] A German court on Wednesday began the trial of an Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... "storm trooper" who allegedly helped track down deserters for the jihadist group in Syria.
Nils D., a 25-year-old German national, had traveled to Syria in October 2013, where he "took on several tasks within the Islamic State organization," prosecutor Carola Bitter said.
They include assisting in interrogations, prison guard duty, as well as participation in the jihadist group's "storm troops," a special assault team.
As a member of this unit, D. allegedly took part in between 10 and 15 missions, in which, masked and armed with a Kalashnikov, he helped to track down IS deserters -- fully knowing that those caught could be tortured to death, Bitter told the court.
Although he did not fight on the front lines, he looked on as executions were carried out by the IS group, and was trained to handle weapons and make explosives, she added.
The accused has been in police custody since his arrest upon his return to Germany in January 2015.
According to a Spiegel Online report, he left Syria after changing his mind about the IS, and managed to escape after telling the jihadists that he was heading back to Germany to bring his daughter to Syria.
Taking the stand at a court in Duesseldorf, western Germany, D. recounted his troubled teenage days, when he admitted he was a "pothead" before converting to Islam in August 2011.
"I practically slipped directly into radicalism," he said, adding that he subsequently joined a local jihadist group called "Lohberger Brigade" and traveled with it to Syria.
D. risks a 10-year sentence, but his willingness to provide details of the IS organization to Sherlocks may be a mitigating factor.
Thousands of Europeans have traveled to Syria to fight for the IS group, and concern is growing about the threat that these returning jihadists pose on their home soil.

Fifty have been killed in fighting while around 120 have returned to Kosovo.
Some 90 people have been arrested in Kosovo since September 2014 on charges including fighting in Syria and Iraq on the side of terrorist groups.
Confronting the threat posed by radical islamists returning from Syria and Iraq, Kosovo adopted a law in 2015 allowing prison sentences to be imposed for fighting abroad.

A court in Istanbul placed the suspects -- who were detained in southeastern city of Sanliurfa on Saturday -- under arrest on charges of "premeditated murder and membership in a terror group", the Anatolia news agency reported.
The arrest of the pair, whose nationalities were not disclosed, raised the number of suspects held in jug over the January 12 bombing to 12, after ten others were charged on Sunday.
Meanwhile counter-terrorism police on Wednesday detained another suspect in a raid on an address in Ankara, news agency Dogan said.
Ten German tourists were killed and another 17 people maimed in the bombing in the historic center of Istanbul near the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, the towering former Byzantine church that is now a museum.
Turkish authorities have identified the bomber as a 28-year-old Syrian who entered The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... on January 5 posing as a refugee, with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu saying the man was a member of IS.
Ankara has often been criticized by its Western allies for not doing enough to combat IS jihadists who have seized swathes of territory in neighboring Syria as well as Iraq.
But Turkey has in recent months stepped up the fight against IS after several deadly attacks blamed on the group, including a double suicide kaboom in October in Ankara that killed 103 people.

[IsraelTimes] Son of Lebanese terror group chief Nasrallah allegedly recruited five men tossed in the calaboose Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! for planning shooting and suicide kabooms
A terror cell based in Tulkarem in the West Bank and recruited and funded by Leb-based Hezbollah planned to carry out a shooting attack and suicide kabooms against Israelis, but was stopped by a joint operation of the Shin Bet security service and the army, officials announced on Wednesday.
Jawad Nasrallah, son of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, recruited the cell via social media, the Shin Bet said.
Hezbollah is considered Israel's most menacing threat, according to IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, though in recent years the majority of its efforts have come from Israel's northern borders with Leb and Syria. The cell thwarted in Tulkarem was "very irregular," the Shin Bet said in a statement.
To assist the cell, Hezbollah gave it $5,000 so it could acquire weaponry and equipment for an attack. Two members of the cell acquired guns and were preparing to shoot IDF troops in the area, but were captured before the attack could be carried out.
In addition to the planned shooting attack, the terror cell also received orders about carrying out suicide kabooms and collecting intelligence on IDF activities and positions.
The five-man cell was led by Mahmoud Zaghloul, 32, from Zita outside of Tulkarem, who was recruited directly by Jawad Nasrallah. It was an initiative of Hezbollah's Unit 133, which is charged with setting up terror cells in Israel.
The unit's actions have by and large "been unsuccessful," the Shin Ben said in a statement.
"The Hezbollah organization is trying to enlist and activate terror cells from afar secretly through the Internet," the statement said.
A Hezbollah operative named Fadi told Zaghloul to set up an email address through which he would "receive orders to recruit additional members for the cell and collect preliminary intelligence for carrying out terror attacks," the Shin Bet said.
"The Hezbollah organization is trying to ride the terror wave that has taken over Israel in recent months and is acting feverishly to inflame passions on the ground," it said.
The cell was an attempt to incite the population and "seduce the youth into carrying out attacks as orders and with monetary funding," the security service said.
In addition to Zaghloul, the four other members of the cell were also arrested by the IDF and Shin Bet.
Zita resident Rabah Labadi, 28, who had been imprisoned in an Israeli jail in 2002-2007 and 2008-2011, was also arrested.
The Shin Bet and IDF also arrested Muhammad Zaghloul, presumably Mahmoud Zaghloul's relative; Muhammad Matzarwa and Ahmed Abu el-Az, all 19 years old and from the Tulkarem area.
They were charged in a military court in the West Bank with belonging to an illegal organization, contact with an enemy, bringing in funds from an enemy, conspiracy to commit a lethal crime, sale of war materials, conspiracy to commit a shooting and interfering with legal proceedings.

Those released included women, children under 14 years old, and the elderly, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
He said they had been freed after undergoing questioning by IS jihadists to determine whether they had ties to Syria's regime.
"They will not go back into Deir Ezzor city, but will be spread out among local tribes in the province," Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse.
IS still holds 130 civilians, mostly teenage and adult men, whom Abdel Rahman said were being questioned.
"If IS sees that they have no ties to the Syrian government, they will take a religious course and will be released," he said.
IS launched a multi-pronged assault on Deir Ezzor city on Saturday, with dozens of its fighters carrying out suicide kabooms as they stormed government positions.
The group is now in control of 60 percent of the city and has tightened its siege around it by capturing surrounding towns.
As IS overran Al-Baghaliyeh, an agricultural area northwest of the city, it kidnapped another 50 people, mostly men, Abdel Rahman said, but it was not immediately clear whether they were civilians or pro-regime fighters.

[Iran Press TV] The Syrian Air Force has destroyed at least 1,662 Takfiri ...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed... targets, including terrorist headquarters and munitions factories, since late December.
The raids were carried out "in the areas of Damascus, Homs, Hama, Idlib, Aleppo, and Dayr al-Zawr," read a statement released by the Syrian army on Wednesday.
"From the 27th of the previous month to the present day, 481 sorties have been carried out," it said, adding that four terrorist command centers and an underground ammunition factory were among the targets destroyed in the western Idlib province.
Three storage facilities, a command center, and a score of armed vehicles were also destroyed in the northwestern province of Aleppo, it noted.
Families return to Damascus area
Meanwhile, ...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results... hundreds of families displaced by fighting in the Qadam neighborhood, a suburb of the Syrian capital, are returning following the implementation of an August 2014 ceasefire between government forces and snuffies that granted the holy warriors free passage from the town.
The Syrian official news agency, SANA, reported that 25 buses were used to return the families to their homes.
Syrian troops have recently been making back-to-back advances with the support of fighters from the Leb resistance movement Hezbollah and Russian Arclight airstrikes.
Earlier, Syrian army troops retook a series of strategic hills and heights in the central province of Homs and destroyed a number of terrorist gathering centers and weapons in Aleppo.
The Syrian forces have been fighting to recapture areas under the control of foreign-backed turban groups, which have been wreaking havoc in the country since 2011. The war in Syria has so far claimed the lives of over 260,000 people and displaced nearly half of the country's population within or beyond its borders.
